Erik ten Hag 'plans to fast track the Manchester United career of teenage sensation Alejandro Garnacho' as the Dutch boss goes to work on his Old Trafford revolution

* Alejandro Garnacho impressed for Manchester United's u18s in the Youth Cup
* Fans had been calling consistently for his involvement in the first team last term
* Erik ten Hag is reportedly excited by the player and will look to involve him

Erik ten Hag is reportedly keen to give teenage sensation Alejandro Garnacho a bigger role in the first team next season.

Garnacho, who impressed for Manchester United's u18s in last season's FA Youth Cup triumph, is said to have caught the eye of the new boss and he will be given an opportunity to show his worth to the senior set up.

According to The Mirror, Ten Hag had staff at Manchester United's Carrington training base set him up with an MUTV subscription so he could watch the FA Youth Cup final win over Nottingham Forest.

While Ten Hag was said to be keen to assess all of Manchester United's youth talent, his focus was on Garnacho who he views as having real potential of being able to break into the first team.

Garnacho starred that night as he scored twice in a 3-1 triumph. The night ended with Manchester United fans in the Stretford End serenading him with an iteration of Cristiano Ronaldo's song.

The young forward made his senior debut as a late substitute in 1-1 draw with Chelsea back in April, with the club's fans regularly calling for him to play more later in the season under Ralf Rangnick.

The club are currently said to be prioritising a new deal for the young forward, believed to be a six-year contract.

Arthur Albiston, a Manchester United and Scotland legend, academy analyst for the club's in-house television station MUTV said that the Argentine has impressed him thoroughly and now he has added goals to his game he is attracting plenty of attention.

He told The Mirror: 'I've watched his development and he's now catching the eye without a doubt because he's adding goals to his game.'

'He's a very talented lad and can come off both wings and cut inside because he's got two good feet,' he said.

'That's a problem for defenders because he's capable of going by you on both sides of the pitch. He's got good balance, moves well and clearly has a sound temperament.

'I've seen a lot of kids coming through at United who have ability but playing in front of 75,000 at Old Trafford is another level and not all of them can handle that. Garnacho looks like he can.'

'He stepped up with no problem when United had a penalty in the FA Youth Cup Final against Forest,' he added.

'He won the penalty with some sharp play then tucked it away as cool as you like in front of the Stretford End.'

Garnacho recently impressed while on duty with Argentina's U20s side finishing joint-second leading scorer at the prestigious Maurice Revello tournament in Toulon with four goals in as many games.

Manchester United starlet Zidane Iqbal signs a new long-term deal at Old Trafford until 2025, with the Iraqi international, 19, hoping to impress new boss Erik ten Hag after making his first-team debut in the Champions League

* Manchester United youngster Zidane Iqbal has signed a new long term deal
* The 19-year-old Iraq midfielder has committed his future until 2025
* Iqbal made his professional debut for United in the Champions League last term

Manchester United prospect Zidane Iqbal has penned a new long-term deal that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2025.

The teenage midfielder was introduced to United fans last season when he made his professional debut in the Champions League during a 1-1 draw against Young Boys in December, with the player brought on in the 89th minute alongside fellow academy graduate Charlie Savage.

Iqbal, 19, was born in Manchester and plays international football for Iraq - his mother's birth country. He joined United at the age of nine and has the option to extend his deal for further year.

A club statement read: 'Manchester United is delighted to announce that Zidane Iqbal has signed a new long-term contract with the club.

'Iqbal has agreed a new deal that will keep him at United until at least June 2025, with the option to extend for a further year.

'He will be looking to hone his talents behind the scenes and maintain his development at the club in the coming months and years.'

His new contract comes at a perfect time, with new boss Erik ten Hag this week taking pre-season training for the first time and looking out for fresh talent to bolster his struggling United side.

Iqbal only signed his first professional contract last year and had a solid season for the club's Under-23 side last season - making 16 starts and scoring two goals.

His emergence comes at a time where United's youth talents are highly regarded.

The club won the FA Youth Cup last season, with young Argentine Alejandro Garnacho scoring twice to help see off Nottingham Forest 3-1 at Old Trafford.

Garnacho - who netted seven goals in seven Youth Cup games - is also believed to be in discussions to extend his deal despite having three years left to run on his current United contract.

Manchester United's summer shake-up continues as former Cardiff academy boss David Hughes joins youth set-up to help develop the next Class of 92

* David Hughes was most recently academy boss at Championship club Cardiff
* He also has coaching experience with Watford, Aston Villa and Southampton
* Manchester United want to 'increase coaching flexibility' across their academy
* The Red Devils' under-18s lifted the FA Youth Cup for the 11th time last season

Manchester United have continued the reshuffle of their academy coaching set-up with the appointment of David Hughes.

The 44-year-old was most recently the academy manager at Championship club Cardiff, who announced that he had left earlier this month to pursue an 'exciting new challenge'.

Hughes also has experience coaching in the youth set-ups of Shrewsbury, Watford, Wales, Aston Villa and Southampton.

As originally reported by Training Ground Guru, the Welshman will be named as a Professional Development Phase coach at United - mostly working with the under-21s but also across the whole 17 to 23 age group.

Manchester United have reportedly added David Hughes to their academy coaching set-up. United are aiming to develop another generation of players to match the famous Class of 92. Hughes came through Aston Villa's academy and made seven Premier League appearances

Having won the FA Youth Cup last season, the Red Devils are aiming to develop another generation of players to match the famous Class of 92 - when the likes of Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and David Beckham broke into the first team 30 years ago.

As a player, Hughes came through Aston Villa's academy and made seven Premier League appearances, but was forced to retire at just 26 years old due to injuries. He also had spells at Carlisle, Shrewsbury and Cardiff.

His move from south Wales to Manchester comes as United seek to 'increase the coaching flexibility' across their academy.

Last season's under-23 boss Neil Wood has been appointed as Salford City's first team manager, while his assistant Neil Ryan has taken up a role with the FA.

Former United academy graduate Mark Dempsey has stepped into Wood's role - although the Premier League has changed its youth competition from under-23s to under-21s.

He will be assisted by Paul McShane, who spent last season coaching the under-23 side while being used as an overage player in matches.

Meanwhile, Travis Binnion - who led the under-18s to FA Youth Cup glory in May - has been promoted to head of player development following Justin Cochrane's departure to Brentford.

United took a host of academy players on their pre-season tour of Thailand and Australia, including Alejandro Garnacho, Zidane Iqbal and Charlie Savage.

Tom Huddlestone is appointed Manchester United U21 player-coach - after former Blackburn striker Benni McCarthy joined Erik ten Hag's coaching staff at the weekend

* Tom Huddlestone is joining Manchester United as player-coach for the U21 side
* The 35-year-old midfielder had been playing at Hull before leaving this summer
* United hope to use his vast experience to mentor their promising youngsters

Tom Huddlestone is joining Manchester United as a player-coach for the club's U21s.

The 35-year old midfielder had been playing at Hull City up until the end of last season and will use his vast experience to help mentor United's youngsters as they look to develop into first-team players.

United used a similar initiative last season when they brought in defender Paul McShane, who has since been promoted to full-time player development phase coach.

The proposed involvement of former England international Huddlestone is seen as vital by academy manager Nick Cox, who wants the younger United stars to tap into the midfielder's experience as they take their next steps.

Tom Huddlestone is joining Manchester United as a player-coach for the club's U21s. The former Tottenham and England midfielder left Championship side Hull City this summer

Liverpool have taken similar steps this season by bringing back Jay Spearing to work with their young reserves. McShane knows Huddlestone from their time together at Hull and knew he had a desire to get into coaching.

That has helped pave the way for his move to Carrington with United ready to confirm the appointment this week. United have made a number of changes to their coaching set up this summer.

Former Porto, West Ham and Blackburn striker Benni McCarthy joined first-team manager Erik ten Hag's staff at the weekend.

McShane made only five appearances last season in his mentor role and Huddlestone is unlikely to play more than that barring injuries.

The 6ft 3ins former Spurs star views the opportunity as very much a coaching role where he can use his ability to help drive standards by taking part in training sessions.

Erik ten Hag praises Manchester United wonderkid Alejandro Garnacho's performance against Rayo Vallecano and reveals how 18-year-old has earned his first-team chance after he 'showed himself during pre-season'

* Erik ten Hag praised Alejandro Garnacho after friendly against Rayo Vallecano
* The 18-year-old started and impressed as Manchester United were held to a draw
* Garnacho made his first-team debut for the club against Chelsea last season
* Ten Hag says his team is ready for their Premier League opener against Brighton

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag heaped praise on Alejandro Garnacho following Sunday's game against Rayo Vallecano.

The 18-year-old winger started and played for 70 minutes as the Red Devils were held to a 1-1 draw by the LaLiga side after Alvaro Garcia Rivera cancelled out Amad Diallo's opener.

Ethan Laird, James Garner and Tahith Chong were among the other youngsters who were given a chance and Ten Hag was left impressed, especially with Garnacho.

He told MUTV: 'We want to give the young players who deserve a chance the opportunity to play. He [Garnacho] showed himself during pre-season and that's why he played.

'He played pretty well and his performance was really good.'

Garnacho has been tipped as the next academy graduate to make a name for himself at Old Trafford after impressing for the Under-18s last season.

He scored twice as United lifted the FA Youth Cup following a 3-1 win over Nottingham Forest in May.

Garnacho joined the club from Atletico Madrid in 2020 before signing a professional deal with the club last summer. The Argentinian made his United debut during a 1-1 draw against Chelsea in May.

Meanwhile, Ten Hag has been left satisfied with what he saw from his team during pre-season as he insisted his team is ready for Sunday's Premier League opener against Brighton.

'Overall, definitely [happy with pre-season], I think we make a good pre-season and we make good progress. We are ready for the season, but I know there is still a lot of room for improvement and we have to improve,' Ten Hag said.

'That is also a process that continues in the season, but for next week it's about the result as well. It [team selection] was a mixture of experience and youth, some guys met each other for the first time today, so what can you expect?

'You saw the attitude was great, they fought and worked for each other and it was positive. We created a lot of chances, okay, we also conceded chances, but I think we have to be satisfied with the performance.'

Manchester United starlet Charlie Savage - son of Robbie - is attracting loan interest from Championship and League One sides after impressing during pre-season tour

* Championship and League One sides are interested in United's Charlie Savage
* The 19-year-old, son of pundit and former player Robbie, impressed this summer
* The midfielder excelled on Manchester United's tour of Thailand and Australia
* Second and third-tier sides are monitoring the situation and are ready to swoop

A number of Championship and League One are exploring a move for young Manchester United midfielder Charlie Savage.

The 19-year-old - son of pundit and former player Robbie - impressed manager Erik ten Hag during the club's recent summer tour and a decision over plans for this season is expected over the coming week.

Sportsmail understands that a group of second and third-tier sides are monitoring the situation and are ready to swoop.

They are keen on taking Savage, who made his debut for United in a Champions League clash with Young Boys last term, on a season-long loan and are ready to step in should the youngster and his club decide that a spell away from Old Trafford would aid his development.

Savage, who impressed against Liverpool and Melbourne Victory while United were in Australia, is highly rated at United.

Former players Andy Cole, Bryan Robson and Paul Scholes have all spoken highly of the player who has come through the club's youth set up.

Should Savage remain at Old Trafford he may find opportunities limited.

However, should he have a successful loan spell he would return with a strong argument to force himself into the first-team picture.

If United finally manage to secure the signing of Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona, that may well have an impact on the decision-making of the local youngster, who does have time on his side having just turned 19.

Erik ten Hag insisted on taking control of Man United's RESERVES to ensure young talents have a route to the first team... with the Dutch boss in charge of selection, tactics and game time just like he was at Ajax

* Erik ten Hag has taken charge of Man United's Under 23 side as well as first-team
* Dutch coach insisted on having the final say over team selection and game time
* He wanted to ensure the pathway from youth academy to first-team was open
* Ten Hag successfully worked with a similar set-up when he was Ajax manager
* United's first team moved into the Premier League top four with win at Wolves

Erik ten Hag has taken control of Manchester United's reserve team as he strives to continue the club's proud tradition of developing top class talents.

The Dutch coach insisted on a level of control over the Under 23 side during negotiations that led to him taking charge at Old Trafford - in the same way he helped keep the pathway from academy to first-team open at former club Ajax.

Ten Hag has been working closely with Under 23 manager Mark Dempsey and coach Paul McShane but has the ultimate say on team selection, game time and even player position.

There has been a homegrown player in every United matchday squad since October 1937.

Erik ten Hag has also taken control of Manchester United's reserve team since arriving. Isak Hansen-Aaroen (right) in action for United's Under 23 side during a recent fixture

'For me, co-operation between all the different departments is crucial to get the right culture in a club,' Ten Hag said, as reported by the Daily Mirror.

'Like at Ajax, when I entered Manchester United the reserve team was isolated.

'It was no longer really part of the academy, but it wasn't part of the first-team either. I changed that immediately - just as I did when I entered Amsterdam.

'At Ajax, the reserve team came under the personality of the manager. That was the only way I could have influence on the flow of young, talented players towards the first-team.

'Of course, I still give the coaches freedom to work, but I also give them direction, by saying for example, "I want that player to start making minutes in that position."

Shola Shoretire is one of the current United talents hoping to break into the first-team

'So the final responsibility lies with me about how the second team performs and the flow of players that goes from the reserve team to the first team.'

United fans have enjoyed the performances of Argentine youngster Alejandro Garnacho this season, following the emergence of Anthony Elanga from the youth set-up last year.

However, United's Under 23 side are only 11th in the Premier League 2 table at present, having won just one of their first 12 games this season but drawing seven.

On his insistence on having control of the second string during negotiations last summer, Ten Hag added: 'This is totally new for the people at Manchester United, but I had already discussed it during the introductory talks with the club management.

Alejandro Garnacho is one exciting talent to have emerged from the United academy

'They were immediately open to it. They looked at Ajax with admiration because of how the club always manages to get youth players successfully through the system.

'There is a constant influx of talents at Ajax and I explained that's because the basis of everything at the club is the youth academy.

'When I was going home from my work at Ajax in the evening, I would often see the under-eights or the under-nines training and I would stay to watch.

'In the final phase of a player's academy years and the step up to the first-team, it is all about the structure between the academy director, the reserve team coach and the manager.

'This is what I mean when I talk about co-operation. I talked to [director of football] John Murtough about this at length before I came to Manchester and he set it up in such a way that I can work this way here too.

'In the Netherlands, I had made the step towards taking more of a managerial role at Ajax. If you don't have competent people around you, you can't delegate and you're going to do it all yourself anyway.

'But if you do have competent people, you have to bring them into your vision and then you can delegate tasks. An example is the training process with the senior team. I know this is in good hands with [coach] Mitchell van der Gaag.

'Because he is at the training sessions, I can often take an overview view. Then, as a manager, you see a lot more than if you are working on the training exercises yourself.'

Ten Hag's United first-team return to action at home to Bournemouth on Tuesday. They moved into the Premier League top four with a 1-0 win at Wolves on Saturday.

Erik ten Hag claims Kobbie Mainoo 'deserved to play' after handing the 17-year-old midfielder his first Manchester United start against Charlton in the Carabao Cup

* Kobbie Mainoo was given his first senior start for the Red Devils against Charlton
* Boss Erik ten Hag said Mainoo deserved the chance after impressing in training
* Mainoo played an hour of the Carabao Cup quarter-final tie at Old Trafford
* The teenager was substituted for Brazilian international Casemiro

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag claimed Kobbie Mainoo was deserving of the opportunity after the 17-year-old midfielder was handed his first senior start against Charlton.

Mainoo was one of eight changes made by Ten Hag for the Carabao Cup quarter-final against their League One opponents.

Ten Hag said the teenager had impressed in United's winter training camp during the World Cup break, which led to him being given the opportunity.

'The most important thing is to win this game and get into the next round,' Ten Hag told MUTV.

'We want to get into the semi-finals, so it's a big game.

Kobbie Mainoo was handed his senior Manchester United debut against Charlton. The 17-year-old was handed the start after impressing Erik ten Hag during training

'For him (Mainoo) it's a great opportunity, he did very well during the winter camp in Spain. He also did very well against Everton in a friendly.

'He deserved to play, so I'm happy to give him the opportunity - it's about deserving it.'

The Stockport-born midfielder was withdrawn on the hour mark, with Brazil international Casemiro brought on for the teenager.

Mainoo had scored for the Red Devils during the winter break in a friendly against Spanish side Cadiz.

He had previously been named on the first team bench against Newcastle in the Premier League during October.
