Manchester United to install new floodlights at Old Trafford and Carrington as Glazers commit to £11M summer schedule of works... while Graeme Souness upsets his neighbour AGAIN over development plans in Dorset

* Man United will carry out work on installing new floodlights during the summer
* Old Trafford and Carrington training ground will benefit from investment of £11m

Manchester United are to install new floodlights at both Old Trafford and Carrington as part of an £11million schedule of works this summer.

Club officials will also oversee the arrival of 1,500 barrier seats as United seek to improve the atmosphere with the aid of ‘safe standing’. The home and away dressing-room areas, long since in need of an upgrade, will also be renovated while a new, Covid-secure digital access and ticketing system will be rolled out.

Fresh pitches and facilities for the men and women’s teams at the training ground are also on the list, while new disabled facilities have already been completed.

Manchester United will install new floodlights at Old Trafford and Carrington this summer. The Glazers' previous failure to invest has been the source of discontent among supporters

The moves come at a time when United’s American owners have come under increased fire from fed-up supporters, with lack of investment in the stadium and facilities one of many gripes.

Indeed, a door smashed by protesting supporters, which allowed them to enter Old Trafford and force the postponement of the Liverpool match last month, was left boarded up for weeks. The door has recently been repaired, with United saying it was custom-made and not ‘off-shelf’.

‘We’ve been trying to get the Glazers out for 15 years without success, so it’s no wonder the club have struggled to do the same,’ one fan joked.

Manchester United's big Covid outbreak: Red Devils struck by a number of positive tests with Tuesday's clash against Brentford now in doubt... and is this why Victor Lindelof went off during Norwich win with breathing problems?

* A number of players and staff at Manchester United have returned positive tests
* It means their Premier League clash with Brentford is now at risk of taking place
* The news follows Tottenham's recent postponements due to an outbreak
* Victor Lindelof went off with breathing difficulty during their win over Norwich

Manchester United have reportedly been hit by a Covid outbreak within their squad which has thrown their plans into chaos.

A number of players and members of staff are said to have returned positive lateral flow tests, according to The Sun.

It comes a day after Victor Lindelof went off against Norwich with breathing problems, though there has been no confirmation that this was Covid-related.

The Premier League have been notified by the Red Devils and it could mean their game on Tuesday against Brentford is at threat of being axed.

A Covid outbreak means Manchester United's game with Brentford could be postponed. Ralf Rangnick's side are supposed to play Brentford on Tuesday in a game which could be axed

It is understood the whole group who travelled to Norwich for their 1-0 win on Saturday have tested negative.

A small number of positive lateral flow tests were reported among players and staff, with those individuals sent home before training got underway on Sunday.

Other players trained outdoors with training adjusted to individual and non-contact sessions.

Defender Lindelof came off mid-way into their match with Norwich as he pointed to his chest, complaining that he was struggling to breathe.

Victor Lindelof went off with breathing problems during United's 1-0 win over Norwich. Lindelof wanted to stay on after his breathing difficulty but was substituted

Lindelof looked in discomfort and after a few minutes of treatment was taken to the dressing room, where he underwent tests.

It was a harrowing moment and De Gea still sounded flustered when he spoke to Sky Sports at the end of the game.

‘I don’t know what was going on but it was like he was feeling his breathing,’ said the United keeper.

De Gea said it brought memories of the Euros flooding back when Denmark’s Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest at Euro 2020 on the pitch as Denmark played Finland.

United's Covid outbreak comes after Tottenham recently had to postpone their UEFA Conference League fixture against Rennes last week and their trip to Brighton in the Premier League.

Covid ripped through the Spurs camp after their own 3-0 victory over Norwich.

United's players who travelled to Norwich are believed to have tested negative

That lead Norwich boss Dean Smith fearing there would be cases in his own camp but tests came back negative.

The Red Devils themselves had a number of cases already this season.

Dean Henderson tested positive at the beginning of the campaign and went on to suffer from long Covid.

Jesse Lingard had to isolate during pre-season while Mason Greenwood had to do the same last month.

There are fears the Omicron variant could continue to hit sporting fixtures as cases increase across the country.

The final two months of the 2019-20 season and virtually the whole of last season were played without any fans allowed in stadiums.

The government's new Covid-19 rules will have significant ramifications for football fans up and down the country, with proof of double vaccination or a negative lateral flow test required to attend sporting events with crowds of more than 10,000 people.

Manchester United's clash at Brentford is POSTPONED after Covid outbreak at the Premier League giants - who have shut down first-team operations at their Carrington training ground for 24 hours to deal with it

* Manchester United's Covid outbreak has seen their match at Brentford called off
* United had already decided to shut down first-team operations at Carrington
* Ralf Rangnick's squad had their training session cancelled on Monday as well
* A number of players and members of staff returned positive tests on Sunday
* The Premier League announced their clash vs Brentford was off on Monday night

Manchester United's game at Brentford on Tuesday night has been called off following a Covid outbreak in their squad.

Confirmation of the Premier League Board's decision came just before midnight after United requested a postponement amid concerns over the spread of the Omicron variant.

The club closed down first-team operations at their Carrington headquarters for 24 hours and cancelled training on Monday to try and limit the risk of further infections after a number of players and staff tested positive on Sunday.

United delayed travelling to London and sought clarification from the Premier League if the game was safe to go ahead before a decision was reached late on Monday night.

Man United's Premier League trip to Brentford has been called off due to a Covid outbreak. Victor Lindelof went off against Norwich on Saturday with breathing problems, though there has been no confirmation that this was Covid-related

A Premier League statement read: 'The Premier League Board has decided to postpone Brentford FC's home fixture against Manchester United, due to be played tomorrow.

'The decision was taken following guidance from medical advisers due to the exceptional circumstances of an ongoing Covid-19 outbreak within Manchester United's squad.

'First-team operations at the club's Carrington Training Complex were closed down today to help control the outbreak and minimise risk of further infection among players and staff.

'The League wishes a quick recovery to those players and staff with COVID-19. The postponed fixture will be rearranged in due course.'

United also issued a statement, saying: 'Following PCR confirmation of positive LFT Covid-19 tests among the first team staff and players, the outbreak requires ongoing surveillance.

'Given cancellation of training and disruption to the squad, and with the health of players and staff the priority, the club requested the match to be rearranged. The Premier League Board took the decision to postpone based on guidance from medical advisors.

'Manchester United regrets the inconvenience caused to Brentford FC and to the fans of both clubs by Covid-19.'

The match is the second Premier League fixture to fall victim to the virus in recent days after Tottenham's match at Brighton on Sunday was called off.

The Red Devils had already been forced to shut down first-team operations at Carrington. Ralf Rangnick's squad had their training session cancelled on Monday due to the outbreak

It followed eight Spurs players and five members of staff testing positive, and Brentford boss Thomas Frank called for more clarity over how many Covid cases will cause a match to be postponed.

'It is a very tricky situation and it is very important that the Premier League and all of us follow the normal society rules and restrictions,' Frank said. 'Then if we could make it very clear what the rules are for cancelling a game, that would be good.

'I am little bit in doubt, when is there enough cases for the game to be cancelled. I guess that the Tottenham situation is the precedent we are going by.

'I read that it was eight players and five staff members so 13 people. If that's the situation, that's the marker we need to go for going forward. Less than that, carry on, because otherwise it will be too messy.'

Man United had just SEVEN players available to face Brighton, forcing the Premier League to postpone the game, but bosses say the show MUST go on despite calls to stop the season

* Man United have seen a second Premier League game called off due to Covid-19
* Saturday lunchtime's clash at home to Brighton has now been postponed
* The Red Devils have shut their Carrington training base until Tuesday at least
* The match is the fifth Premier League game to be called off due to Omicron
* The Premier League has ruled out a full suspension despite pressure to stop

Manchester United's next Premier League match with Brighton on Saturday lunchtime has been postponed as the Red Devils continue to struggle with the coronavirus outbreak in their squad.

Ralf Rangnick's side were forced to postpone their last match - a trip to west London side Brentford - on Tuesday night after being forced to close their Carrington training base after last weekend's win over Norwich.

United have since returned more positive coronavirus results and while some players were able to train this week, the club are unable to field a team this weekend with only seven players available for the Brighton match.

Only nine players were available ahead of Tuesday night's match against Brentford, with United boss Rangnick resorting to using youth team players during the training sessions that took place this week.

The Red Devils also announced that their training complex will revert back to being closed until Tuesday at least, in order to reduce the risk of transmission. David de Gea, Marcus Rashford, Fred and Alex Telles were four of the players who trained at Carrington's training base before it closed again.

The match is the fifth Premier League match to be called off due to outbreaks of the Omicron variant that has infected tens of thousands around the UK - but the top flight insist there will not be a league-wide suspension of matches.

Manchester United's Premier League clash with Brighton has been called off due to Covid. United were able to train this week but only seven players were available to play on Saturday

A Premier League statement on Thursday read: 'While recognising a number of clubs are experiencing Covid-19 outbreaks, it is the League’s intention to continue its current fixture schedule where safely possible. The health and wellbeing of all concerned remains our priority.'

Brentford manager Thomas Frank began an appeal to get this weekend's full round of Premier League matches, along with next week's Carabao Cup quarter-final ties, called off so clubs can get their coronavirus cases under control.

English football is preparing for at least a dozen more requests to postpone matches amid the Omicron surge.

Thursday night's top-flight clash between Leicester City and Tottenham has been called off following requests from both camps this week and while Chelsea also reported a small number of cases on Thursday, their match with Everton tonight will still go ahead.

According to ESPN, an increasing number of clubs are said to be keen on the idea of stopping play until January 8 next year - which would rule out four rounds of Premier League fixtures, including this weekend.

As well as United's postponed clash with Brentford on Tuesday, Burnley's match against Watford on Wednesday was called off two hours before kick-off after the Hornets announced an outbreak in their team.

Last weekend's clash between Brighton and Tottenham was called off after Spurs reported that 13 players from Antonio Conte's squad had tested positive for the virus.

In the EFL, as many as seven matches this weekend were called off on Thursday, including Saturday matches between Sheffield Wednesday and Accrington and Crawley’s encounter with Oldham Athletic.

The Premier League is holding daily briefings, while the League Managers’ Association is in regular dialogue with the top flight and EFL as managers seek clarity on a rapidly worsening situation.

United's Carrington training base has closed once again and will remain shut until Tuesday

While the Premier League and EFL wish for the campaign to continue, there is a growing belief among club medics that an enforced break is looking increasingly likely.

The Omicron variant has led to a large increase of cases in the UK, with 78,610 people testing positive on Wednesday - the highest daily number since the pandemic began.

Brentford manager Frank claims the variant is 'running like wildfire' around the world and that shutting down football for at least a week would help clubs get things under control.

The Danish manager told a press conference on Thursday morning: 'It would give everyone a week at least, or four or five days to clean and do everything at the training ground so everything is clean and you break the chain.

'Also in football, you need close contact. Physios need to do their job with players in treatment. We are in dressing room on matchdays, we are travelling by coaches so it's a little bit more difficult to work from home.'

Frank believes a decision to halt this weekend's round of top-flight fixtures could be enough to sure the busy festive programme will be able to go ahead largely as planned.

'We fully respect that we want to play and it is important football keeps going, and this way we can make sure Boxing Day keeps going, I'm 100 per cent sure of that,' added Frank.

'This Omicron variant is running like wildfire around the world and I think we need to do all we can to protect and avoid it. I think we can do a lot by closing down training grounds for three, four or five days, and then we can go again.'

Manchester United donate over FOUR THOUSAND items of unused food - as well as flowers and hospitality gifts - to charity after home Premier League clash against Brighton was postponed

* Manchester United have donated food, flowers and hospitality gifts to charity
* The Reds game against Brighton was postponed due to a Covid-19 outbreak
* United have closed their training base until next week as they tackle the virus

Manchester United have made sure that at least some good has come out of their postponed Premier League game with Brighton at Old Trafford by donating unused food, flowers and hospitality gifts to charity.

The fixture was the second United game to be called off this week following the postponement of Tuesday's trip to Brentford due to a Covid-19 outbreak at the club.

United have also shut down first-team operations at their Carrington training ground until early next week to try and stem the tide of positive results.

Preparations for the Brighton game and a full-house at Old Trafford were well underway when the match was called off on Thursday with United having only seven players available.

Manchester United's game against Brighton was postponed due to a Covid-19 outbreak. The club will close their training ground next week as they aim to stop the spread of the virus

But the club were determined not to let everything go to waste and made use of as much as they could to aid charity in the build-up to Christmas.

More than 4,000 items of food including fresh sandwiches, fruit and vegetables, have been donated to local food banks.

Ralf Rangnick's side have donated sandwiches, fruit and vegetables to local food banks. Food from the Manchester United hospitality suites was donated following the postponement

In addition, flowers and gifts from the hospitality suites at Old Trafford have been given to St Ann's Hospice and local charities respectively.

It follows a joint donation of £100,000 by the club and the Manchester United Foundation to food charity FareShare that was announced earlier this week.

Collette Roche, United's chief operating officer, Manchester United, said at the time: 'We are proud of the work Manchester United Foundation does to support our local community and this has never been more important than it is now with so many households facing a tough winter.

'Manchester United is pleased to be making this joint donation with the Foundation to FareShare Greater Manchester and we invite our fans to unite with us behind this crucial cause.'

Manchester United 'SCRAP tentative plans to move out of their Carrington training ground and build a new £200m base at the Tatton Estate over the staggering cost of relocating' with the Red Devils 'set to revamp their current site instead'

* The club's training base is currently Carrington, seven miles from Old Trafford
* They moved their in 2000 after leaving their iconic Cliff training ground
* United bosses had plans for a £200m building but 'found land too expensive'

Manchester United have reportedly given up on plans to move away from their Carrington training ground after discovering it will cost too much money to relocate.

The Trafford Training Centre, more commonly known as Carrington, has been United's home since 2000 when they moved from their iconic Cliff training ground.

Since moving to the new site seven miles away from Old Trafford and west of Manchester, the building has seen several upgrades including a medical centre and sports science department built in 2013.

Manchester United have scrapped plans to move training base after the fee to do was too high. The club's training base is Carrington which is located seven miles away from Old Trafford

Despite this additions, United were reported to be looking into sites elsewhere as they believed they had outgrown their current site.

The Sun reports United higher ups had touted the Tatton Estate, which is the largest private landowner in East Cheshire, responsible for 5,000 acres, as a potential new base of operations but have performed a U-turn after discovering how much it would cost.

The estimated cost of building a state-of-the-art facility on the estate was reportedly £200million but it was the cost of the land that caused United bosses to change their mind.

They moved there from iconic training ground The Cliff in 2000 and have made additions

Instead, the club will once again aim to redevelop Carrington and have reportedly already appointed Mags Mernagh as programme director for the project.

Mernagh previously worked at Leicester City and was instrumental in delivering their £130m training ground.

It's reported that staff were informed by email last week that she will be 'responsible for delivering the vision and plan for a world-class training ground redevelopment.'

A medical centre was built in 2013 but the club is reported to believe the site is now too small. United are instead likely to focus on buying more land around Carrington as an alternative

A United insider revealed to the Sun: 'The club had looked at moving to Tatton but received word that it would cost tens of millions of pounds before a spade was even in the ground.

'Carrington needs to deliver for the men's, women's and Academy teams at all levels and the bosses know it will take big money to do it right.'

United are likely to focus on buying more land around Carrington as an alternative.

The club have previously struggled to find sponsorship for their Carrington ground after their contract with AON expired at the end of last season. They had raked in £120m across the eight-year deal.

However, they later announced a training kit sponsorship with blockchain platform Tezos in a deal worth £20m per season.

Man United's two top scouts LEAVE as Jim Lawlor and Marcel Bout's 24 years of service are ended to kick-start huge summer overhaul after wasting £1bn for no titles since 2013 - but Gary Neville says it STILL won't spark a 'revolution'

* Manchester United confirm Jim Lawlor and Marcel Bout have left the club
* The scouting duo were two of United's leading scouts in recent years
* Lawlor has been chief scout for 16 years after he was hired back in 2005
* Bout joined United as part of Louis van Gaal's backroom team in 2014

Manchester United will overhaul their scouting network this summer after confirming that Jim Lawlor and Marcel Bout have left the club.

Lawlor has been chief scout for 16 years after he was brought in under Sir Alex Ferguson in 2005.

The 57-year-old Irishman was given a new role six years ago overseeing an expanded network of scouts at United, but the system is expected to change again this summer.

A club statement read: 'Jim Lawlor has decided to step down from his role as chief scout in the summer after 16 years with the club.

'During that time, Jim played a key role in the development of multiple trophy-winning Manchester United teams and was an important source of guidance to Sir Alex Ferguson and each of the managers who have followed him.

'Jim leaves the club with our warmest thanks for his significant contribution and our very best wishes for the future.'

Bout joined United as part of Louis van Gaal's backroom team in 2014 and was appointed United's head of global scouting two years later.

The club statement added: 'Marcel Bout has departed from his role as head of global scouting after eight years with the club.

'A respected figure within and outside of Manchester United, Marcel has played an important part as an assistant coach and in the strengthening of our scouting capabilities in recent years.

'Marcel leaves the club with our warmest thanks for his significant contribution and our very best wishes for the future.'

Following the news of Lawlor and Bout's departure, there were suggestions that it could spark positive changes at the club, given they haven't won a Premier League title since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 while spending £1billion in trying to do so.

United have failed to win a Premier League title since 2013 despite spending £1billion. Gary Neville insists that the overhaul of the scouting department won't spark a 'revolution'

However, United legend Gary Neville insists fans shouldn't expect to see change anytime soon.

Reacting to the news that Lawlor and Bout's departures would spark a 'revolution', Neville tweeted: 'Not quite sure we're going to see a revolution. Jim has been marginalised for years so this won't shift the dial.'

The departures come less than 24 hours after United's heavy 4-0 defeat against Liverpool, which saw Ralf Rangnick claim up to 10 players could be sold in the summer as they look to rebuild both on and off the pitch.

Manchester United 'call off end of season awards' after EMBARASSED players 'request the ceremony be cancelled' following disastrous campaign

* United are guaranteed to finish with their lowest Premier League points tally
* The club could yet face the ignominy of Europa Conference League football
* Reports suggest players did not think it was suitable to hold the glitzy gala
* Bruno Fernandes has won the past two player of the season awards

Manchester United have reportedly cancelled their end of season awards after players requested the ceremony not take place following their dismal campaign.

United are guaranteed to finish on their lowest Premier League points tally, even if they beat Crystal Palace on Sunday, and could end with the ignominy of a place in the Europa Conference League.

Their season reached a nadir in their last outing, when they were humbled 4-0 by Brighton and Hove Albion on May 7.

The club have held the glitzy awards ceremony for more than a decade but The Mirror reports plans for this year's gala dinner, set to be held at Old Trafford, have been scrapped.

United's players are reportedly too embarrassed to have their end of season awards this year. Despite the efforts of Cristiano Ronaldo, United have endured a dismal season on the pitch. United have endured a dismal run of form under interim manager Ralf Rangnick

Players asked club officials for the end-of-season event to be called off amid embarrassment at their disastrous campaign, according to The Mirror.

Bruno Fernandes has won United's player of the year award, named after legendary former manager Sir Matt Busby, for the past two seasons.

United have missed out on qualification for the Champions League and may not even make the Europa League places if they suffer defeat at Selhurst Park.

They also failed to get beyond the last 16 of the Champions League and were knocked out of the FA Cup in the fourth round by Championship side Middlesbrough.

United sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November, in the wake of a 4-1 loss to Watford, and replaced him with interim manager Ralf Rangnick.

The German's spell at Old Trafford has also been poor, leading to growing animosity from fans furious at the club's long decline under the controversial Glazer ownership.

United are set to embark on a new era under incoming boss Erik ten Hag, who is expected to attend the Palace match on Sunday.

Ten Hag has signed a three-year contract to take over from Rangnick, with the option of a fourth.

Tom Keane - BROTHER of Everton defender Michael - is set to join Manchester United to replace transfer chief Matt Judge as the club prepare for a busy summer window

* Tom Keane is poised to join Manchester United as their chief transfer negotiator
* Keane is the brother of Everton defender Michael and Wigan striker Will Keane
* Tom is a solicitor from legal firm Brandsmiths and will begin a consultancy role
* Keane will now play a significant role in negotiating transfers and contracts during what is expected to be a busy window under new manager Erik ten Hag
* He replaces transfer chief Matt Judge, who resigned and is leaving this summer

The brother of Everton defender Michael Keane is set to join Manchester United next month to replace outgoing chief transfer negotiator Matt Judge.

Sportsmail understands solicitor Tom Keane, from legal firm Brandsmiths, is joining the Old Trafford club in a consultancy role from next month.

He is expected to take on some of the responsibilities vacated by Judge, the club's director of transfer negotiations, who is leaving United this summer after handing in his resignation.

Keane will now play a significant role in negotiating transfers and contracts during what is expected to be a busy window for United following the appointment of Erik ten Hag as new head coach; with Frenkie de Jong and Pau Torres among the club's targets.

Brandsmiths website reads: 'In sport, Tom has vast experience in the football industry where he has become a trusted advisor and representative for household name players, managers and pundits.

'His work for these clients includes negotiating high value transfers, contracts and endorsement agreements.'

Brandsmiths have headquarters in London and Manchester.

Keane is also listed on the website of player agency New Era Global Sports as an FA registered intermediary.

The lawyer is also brother of former United striker Will, who now plays for Wigan.

United are in the midst of revamping their transfer structure, part of which has seen Judge tender his resignation.

The Old Trafford reshuffle is being led by football director John Murtough, and Keane's expected arrival is the latest important appointment.

Sportsmail exclusively revealed on Thursday United's interest in departing Liverpool sporting director Michael Edwards, who is also admired by Chelsea.
