Hull City 0-1 Manchester United: The three best and worst performers
Jordan Street - August 28, 2016

Hull City and Manchester United went to battle in horrific torrential conditions this evening, with Jose Mourinho’s men eventually forcing the ball into the back of the net, deep into injury time. The game as a whole was a real thrilling spectacle despite the net bustling just the once, and it certainly was interesting to watch just how diligently Hull City defended for Mike Phelan.

Mourinho’s United were comfortable in possession and had large chunks of the ball throughout which was exactly what was expected. For the majority of the game, they struggled to do anything menacing with it, but that all changed in the second half when changes were made.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Marcus Rashford were both introduced, and they brought a real injection of pace to the table, as well as a willingness to run in beyond Zlatan Ibrahimovic. That’s when you began to feel like a goal was coming, and credit to the duo for patiently waiting for their chance and grasping it with both hands.

Mike Phelan will have to be supremely happy with the display from his lads as well. They defended as a unit from one to eleven, and as the game progressed, they were not afraid to try and make a break on the counter attack.

We’ve been tasked with the tricky job of picking out the three best and worst performers from that game, and a lot of faces certainly proved their worth over the ninety minutes.

Manchester United will walk away with the points, but you simply have to admire that defensive masterclass from Curtis Davies . The Englishman threw his body in front of absolutely everything, won plenty of aerial duels with Zlatan Ibrahimovic and was a real leader back there. Sadly, he finished up on the losing side.

The man that made the real difference came from off of the bench, and he simply has to be included. Marcus Rashford was nothing short of sensational. The 18-year-old Mancunian was at the heart of everything good for the away side, he beat his man more often than not, and scored the all-important winner as the game drew to a close.

With one last place up for grabs, it was tricky to choose from. Honourable mentions go to Eldin Jakupovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, but I’ve had to go for Eric Bailly . The Ivorian was a defensive powerhouse throughout, and I literally lost count of how many times he won the ball on the halfway line and got United moving forward again. This lad has immense talent, and a huge future in the Premier League if he continues to grow.

Onto the worst performers, and this trio proved slightly easier to select. First up is none other than Wayne Rooney . Although he played a huge part in the eventual winning goal, his performance as a whole was atrocious. He gave the ball away more often than not, and he stopped so many Manchester United counter attacks due to any real lack of awareness and pace.

Anthony Martial is also another huge concern for Manchester United. He was arguably the Red Devils’ top performer in an attacking sense last season, but this term has been a different story and he looks completely bereft of confidence. He struggled to use his explosiveness for the duration, and was rightly hooked as the game wore on.

Finally, Marouane Fellaini takes the last spot in the list of three worst performers. The big Belgian has been influential in the first few games for United, but struggled in the slippy conditions this evening. The 28-year-old picked up an early booking after a couple of needless tackles, and when United were pressing on, he lacked that penetrative pass that could’ve made the result far more comfortable.

Aku setuju dengan Davies, Rashford, Bailly, Rooney dan Martial. Tapi aku nggak setuju klo Fellaini masuk 3 besar terburuk malam kemarin. Memang sih 2 pelanggaran dalam 20 menit awal pertandingan dimana yg kedua mendapat KK bener2 nggak perlu tapi dia bisa bangkit menjaga permainannya jadi bersih. Biasanya klo dia dah kena KK tinggal tunggu waktu diganti mengingat gaya mainnya yg rawan pelanggaran.

playmaker tinggal berkreasi..
