19 November 1994 - Tottenham Hotspur 3-4 Aston Villa

Dean Saunders scored a dramatic last-minute winner against Tottenham Hotspur to give Brian Little a 4-3 victory in his first match as Aston Villa manager.

Little had replaced Ron Atkinson, who had parted company with the club after a 4-3 defeat in their previous match at Wimbledon. He witnessed a pulsating encounter in which Villa's early 3-0 lead evaporated but, unlike in the previous match at Selhurst Park, they emerged triumphant thanks to Saunders' late intervention.

Villa did not look a side who had only won two of their first 14 matches as they scored an early flurry of goals. Dalian Atkinson put them ahead in the eighth minute and Graham Fenton stretched their advantage with goals in the 21st and 27th minutes.

Crucially for Spurs, they hit back before the break with Teddy Sheringham netting in the 40th minute. Then Spurs summer signing Jurgen Klinsmann turned the match on its head in the second half.

First the German converted a 53rd-minute penalty and then hit the equaliser in the 74th minute. But Villa refused to lie down and Saunders popped up at the end to win it.

Despite the result, Villa stayed in the four-team relegation zone while Spurs, whose defeat dropped two places to 15th.

The north London club however went on to finish seventh while Villa, runners-up in the inaugural BPL season 18 months earlier, drew with Norwich City on the final day of the season to preserve their top-flight status.

20 November 2010 - Bolton Wanderers 5-1 Newcastle United

Kevin Davies and Johan Elmander each scored twice as Bolton Wanderers ran up their biggest win of the season against Newcastle United to climb into the top four of the Barclays Premier League table.

Davies scored the first and last goals from the penalty spot to take his tally for the season to six while Elmander reached eight for the campaign with his second half brace.

Former Bolton captain Kevin Nolan, playing against his old club for the first time since leaving in January 2009, gave away the opening goal when he handled in the area and Davies converted the spot-kick in the 18th minute.

Chung-Yong Lee doubled Bolton's lead six minutes before half-time when he reacted quickly to score from close range after Matt Taylor's free-kick had hit the bar and then caused confusion in the penalty area.

The match seemed over in the 50th minute when Elmander collected a pass from Davies, rounded goalkeeper Tim Krul and tapped the ball into the net.

But two minutes later Andy Carroll gave Newcastle United hope when he drove the ball in from an acute angle.

Elmander scored again 18 minutes from time when he beat Fabricio Coloccini to the ball and drove past Krul. Coloccini's tough afternoon was complete when he was shown a straight red card for elbowing Elmander.* Then deep into injury-time, Jose Enrique tripped Davies, who got up to stroke home his second penalty of the match.

Bolton's BPL season tailed off after this match as they only won seven of their final 24 fixtures to finish in 14th place. They did, though, have the consolation of reaching the FA Cup semi-finals. Newcastle, in their first season back in the top flight following promotion, finished 12th.

20 November 1971 - A Hat-Trick Of Hat-Tricks

On 20 November 1971, Third Division side Bournemouth thoroughly thrashed the Southern League's Margate by the score of 11-0 in the First Round of the 1971-72 FA Cup. Bournemouth's hero that day was 24-year old Scottish forward Ted "SuperMac" MacDougall, who scored nine of the Cherries' eleven goals.

MacDougall had joined Bournemouth in the summer of 1969 (when the club was still known as "Bournemouth & Boscombe Athletic") after being acquired from York City for £10,000. He scored 21 league goals for the Cherries that season, but they were nonetheless relegated to Division Four. Under new manager John Bond, they were promoted at the first opportunity and were enjoying their return to the Third Division when they met Margate in the FA Cup.

MacDougall scored five goals in the first half, prompting the Margate manager to ask Bond jokingly to substitute the forward in the second half. MacDougall went on to score four more after the break.

The Cherries advanced to the Third Round where they were eliminated 1-0 by Walsall. MacDougall moved to Manchester United in September 1972 for a transfer fee of £200,000, but never settled. He played for a number of other clubs, including a second stint at Bournemouth, before retiring in 1980.

His 9 goals still hold the FA Cup record for the most scored by a player in a single game.

21 November 1998 - Aston Villa 2-4 Liverpool

Robbie Fowler hit a hat-trick against Aston Villa as Liverpool manager Gerard Houllier earned his first victory since taking charge of the team on his own.

Houllier, managing on his own since joint manager Roy Evans left earlier in the month, suffered a 3-1 defeat to Leeds United in his previous fixture but Fowler earned the visitors their first Barclays Premier League win in four matches.

It was a first home defeat of the season for leaders Villa, who had striker Stan Collymore sent off, but they stayed top of the table despite the result.

Paul Ince headed Liverpool into a second minute lead from Patrik Berger's corner for his first league goal of the season.

Villa, who had only conceded four goals in their first six home matches, found themselves 2-0 down in the seventh minute when Fowler headed in Jamie Redknapp's pinpoint centre.

Collymore was then booked for a tackle on Steve Harkness which resulted in the Liverpool defender being stretchered off, before heading wide from a Paul Merson cross. Merson then centred to recent signing Dion Dublin, whose effort hit the post.

Dublin did halve the lead straight after half-time but Fowler restored the visitors' two-goal advantage in the 58th minute.

Villa refused to lie down and Collymore set up Dublin to score his second of the match and seventh for the hosts in four matches since moving from Coventry City.

In the 66th minute Fowler completed his hat-trick and, within two minutes, Villa were reduced to 10 men when Collymore was shown his second yellow card for a push on Michael Owen.

Goalkeeper David James preserved Liverpool's two-goal advantage when he denied Dublin a hat-trick by saving his 76th minute penalty, which he had conceded by bringing down substitute Julian Joachim.

Liverpool went on to finish the season in seventh place, one place below Villa, the first time in five years the Reds had missed out on a place in the top four.

23 November 2013 - Everton 3-3 Liverpool

Daniel Sturridge struck in the 89th minute to earn Liverpool a draw in a thrilling Barclays Premier League Merseyside derby.

The substitute hit his ninth BPL goal of the campaign to clinch the draw after Everton had hit back from 1-0 and 2-1 down to lead 3-2 with less than 10 minutes remaining.

Philippe Coutinho gave Liverpool a fifth minute lead from a Steven Gerrard corner after he was left unmarked at the far post but Kevin Mirallas equalised three minutes later when the visitors failed to deal with a Leighton Baines free-kick.

Luis Suarez restored the Reds' advantage in the 19th minute with a low, curling strike from distance after he had been fouled by Gareth Barry.

Everton substitute Gerard Deulofeu, who replaced the injured Baines just after half-time, had a great chance to level minutes after coming on but the onrushing Simon Mignolet blocked his shot.

At the other end Suarez weaved his way through the home defence and set up Joe Allen eight yards out but he sidefooted the ball wide of the post.

Romelu Lukaku then equalised for the hosts in the 72nd minute as his shot from Mirallas' cross squeezed past Mignolet.

And the Belgium striker, on loan from Chelsea, put Everton ahead for the first time 10 minutes later when he headed in a corner from Mirallas.

Liverpool kept battling, though, and Sturridge headed in a Gerrard free-kick to rescue a point and condemn Everton to a third successive BPL draw.

The result kept Liverpool second in the table and Everton fifth. The Reds finished runners up and narrowly missed out on their first title in 24 years after dropping points against Chelsea and Crystal Palace following a sensational 11-match winning streak.

Everton went on to finish in fifth position and secured a club record BPL haul of 72 points.

24 November 2013 - Manchester City 6-0 Tottenham Hotspur

Manchester City routed Tottenham Hotspur to maintain their 100% home record in the Barclays Premier League and to move six points behind leaders Arsenal.

Jesus Navas scored at the start and end of the match while there were two goals for Sergio Aguero and one for Alvaro Negredo, while Sandro put through his own net.

Spurs had only conceded six goals in their first 11 top flight matches of the season but fell to their biggest defeat since losing 7-1 to Newcastle United in December 1996.

The visitors' resistance lasted for only 14 seconds as a clearance from Hugo Lloris went straight to Aguero. The goalkeeper redeemed himself by saving the Argentinian's shot but Navas expertly arrowed the rebound into the top corner from an acute angle.

Spurs hit back and Erik Lamela's effort was cleared off the line by Martin Demichelis but that was a rare chance for the north Londoners.

It was 2-0 in the 34th minute when Lloris parried another Aguero effort and Negredo's follow-up effort deflected into the net off the unfortunate Sandro.

Aguero got on the scoresheet four minutes before half-time when he finished off Navas' right-wing cross.

Five minutes after the interval Aguero struck again when Negredo played a one-two with Yaya Toure and crossed for the striker to slot home.

Samir Nasri hit the bar before it became 5-0 in the 55th minute when Negredo produced a superb piece of skill to outwit Michael Dawson before scoring with a fierce shot from the edge of the penalty area.

Former Man City striker Emmanuel Adebayor, a half-time substitute, was denied a consolation goal by Costel Pantilimon before Navas ran through to score a last-minute sixth for the hosts.

City went on to win their second BPL title in three seasons while Spurs came sixth - their fifth successive top-six placing.

Thierry Henry's double sealing a late win

25 November 2001 - Arsenal 3-1 Manchester United

Thierry Henry capitalised on two errors from goalkeeper Fabien Barthez to set up a home victory for Arsenal against defending Barclays Premier League champions Manchester United.

United had taken an early lead through Paul Scholes but Freddie Ljungberg equalised before Henry struck twice in the last 10 minutes to move the Gunners up to third in the table.

Barthez had made a good start to the match with saves from two Henry free-kicks before the visitors went ahead in the 14th minute.

Ruud van Nistelrooy released Mikael Silvestre and he beat Lauren before crossing from the left for Scholes to tuck in his first league goal of the season.

Arsenal continued to dominate in driving rain but failed to score in the first half. But they did level three minutes after the break when Ljungberg superbly lifted the ball over Barthez from 25 yards out after being found by Robert Pires.

Henry had another chance to score and Kanu could not make the most of a good opportunity when left unmarked near goal.

Substitute Dennis Bergkamp then set up another chance for Henry, before the France international finally scored in the 80th minute. Barthez cleared the ball straight to the striker, who finished with ease to put Arsenal ahead for the first time.

Five minutes later Barthez fumbled a free-kick and Henry was on hand once again to punish him by making it 3-1.

Henry finished the campaign as the BPL's top scorer with 24 goals as Arsenal were crowned champions for the second time in five seasons.

United finished 10 points behind the Gunners in third place, three points adrift of second-placed Liverpool.

26 November 2000 - Leeds complete record deal for Ferdinand

Leeds United broke the record for a transfer fee between two English clubs when they paid £18m to West Ham United for central defender Rio Ferdinand.

The deal beat the £15m that Newcastle United paid Blackburn Rovers for Alan Shearer in 1996 and made Ferdinand the world's most expensive defender, eclipsing the £10.75m fee that Manchester United paid PSV Eindhoven for Jaap Stam in 1998.

The 22-year-old started his career at the Boleyn Ground and made more than 200 senior appearances for the club.

Ferdinand's last match for West Ham was ironically against Leeds at Elland Road, and the Hammers won 1-0.

"This is a special day for Leeds United and I also think it's a special day for English football," Leeds chairman Peter Risdale said.

Ferdinand added: "As soon as I spoke to the chairman I realised the ambition of the club and that it coincided with my ambition and what I wanted to achieve.
"This is a big step forward for me and hopefully my career can really grow from here.

"It wasn't a big decision in terms of ambition but it was a big wrench to leave my family and West Ham. The club have a big place in my heart and I will always love West Ham."

During his time with Leeds, Ferdinand flourished and became the club's captain. He also played a key role as Leeds reached the UEFA Champions League semi-finals and finished fourth in the BPL during his first season at Elland Road.
Having missed out on a place in the England squad for UEFA Euro 2000, his performances made him an automatic choice for the 2002 FIFA World Cup finals where he played in all of his country's matches - scoring once.

Immediately after the finals, and after making 54 Barclays Premier League appearance for Leeds, he was involved in another record-breaking move - this time for £30m to Manchester United.

Ferdinand won six Barclays Premier League titles in a glorious 12-year career at Old Trafford before leaving in the summer of 2014 for Queens Park Rangers, where he made his 500th BPL appearance.

6 December 2000 - Defender Staunton rejoins Aston Villa

Steve Staunton left Liverpool to rejoin his former club Aston Villa on a free transfer.

The Republic of Ireland international defender's first spell at Villa Park also came after a move from Anfield, having originally made the same journey in 1991.

After playing more than 200 Barclays Premier League matches for Villa and helping them win the League Cup twice, he returned to Liverpool in 1998 but he left for the second time after failing to establish himself in the first team under Gerard Houllier.

"I could not have wished for a bigger club to come after me," said Staunton. "Knowing the area and being at Villa Park for seven good years, I’m pleased to be back."

Villa manager John Gregory said: "Steve has massive experience and can cover a range of positions.

"He has a positive presence in the dressing-room and knows that he will come back with the task of trying to force his way back into a very strong defensive unit. Steve is prepared for that challenge."

Staunton had to wait nearly a month for his second Villa debut, which came in a New Year's Day defeat at Chelsea.

Once in the side he was a regular for the rest of the season and continued to keep his place during the following two campaigns. But at the end of the 2002/03 season he left Villa Park on a free transfer and joined Coventry City, where he spent two years before finishing his career at Walsall.

In the summer of 2002 he captained the Republic of Ireland in the FIFA World Cup finals in Japan and South Korea - passing 100 caps for his country. When the side was knocked out by Spain he announced his international retirement after 102 matches for his country.

15 December 1995 - Bosman Beats The Bossman

On 15 December 1995, the European Court of Justice issued its opinion in a trio of cases involving Belgian midfielder Jean-Marc Bosman (right). The decision rewrote the football rules governing transfers by allowing players out of contract to change clubs without a fee.

Bosman initiated the legal action on 8 August 1990 by filing suit against his then-current club, RC Liège, because the Belgian club refused to allow his transfer to French second-division side US Dunkerque. Although Bosman was out of contract, Liège still owned his playing rights and refused the transfer unless Dunkerque coughed up a transfer fee of 1,200,000 Belgian francs, which the French club declined to do.

The European Court of Justice ruled that Liège's actions constituted an illegal restraint of trade prohibited by Article 39(1) of the EC Treaty. The court held that players out of contract were able to move between clubs without a transfer fee, provided they were moving between clubs in the European Union.

While the landmark decision opened the floodgates for footballer transfers, it came too late for Bosman himself, who, after short spells for lower-division sides in France and Belgium, was out of football by the time the court published its opinion.
