Ronald Koeman is FINALLY sacked by Barcelona as Catalans put Dutch boss out of his misery after dismal defeat by Rayo Vallecano left crisis club down in ninth place in LaLiga amid financial turmoil

* Barcelona have sacked Ronald Koeman following a dismal run of performances
* The Catalan giants have won three of their last 10 matches under the Dutchman
* Wednesday's defeat by Rayo Vallecano was the final straw for Barca's chiefs
* The LaLiga club announced Koeman's dismissal shortly after their latest defeat

Ronald Koeman has been sacked by Barcelona after overseeing their worst start to a season since the 1987-88 campaign.

They finished sixth that year – a similar season would leave them outside the Champions League and have catastrophic consequences for the club’s already fragile finances.

They are currently floundering in ninth almost closer to the relegation zone than to the top of the table.

Koeman was fired on the flight back from a 1-0 defeat to Rayo Vallecano.

Ronald Koeman has been sacked by Barcelona after their defeat by Rayo Vallecano in LaLiga. The under-fire boss was relieved of his duties following Barcelona's defeat by Rayo Vallecano

Barcelona had not lost against the small Madrid-based club for 19 years when Louis van Gaal was in charge.

The 1-0 defeat could have ended very differently had Memphis Depay not missed a penalty and Sergino Dest not blazed over from five yards out.

But that has been the story of Barcelona’s season. They have scored just one goal away from home and are yet to win on the road.

Things have been no better in Europe where Barcelona lost their first two group games for the first time in Champions League history.

Barcelona have won just three of their last 10 games in all competitions under the Dutchman. Barcelona president Joan Laporta relieved Koeman of his duties on Wednesday evening. The LaLiga giants are enduring their worst start to a campaign since the 1987-88 season

They won last week against Dynamo Kiev but the unconvincing 1-0 victory still leaves their qualification hanging by a thread.

Koeman's sacking has been months in the making. The club’s president Joan Laporta openly admitted in the summer that the 58-year-old was remaining in charge because no acceptable alternative could be found.

Koeman looked to have taken charge of his last game before the international break when the team was beaten by Benfica.

Club directors debated his future until 4am after returning from Lisbon with financial concerns preventing them from making the change.

Wednesday night’s loss to Rayo saw them slip towards mid-table obscurity and the board decided not to prolong the agony any longer regardless of the difficulties of spending another €12million (£10.1m) on paying him off.

Having fired one club legend the club could now turn to another. Laporta has indicated in the past that he feels Xavi Hernandez is still not ready for the big job.

The former captain has also expressed reservations but both parties now believe the time could be right to save the season and build around the young players that have emerged in the last 12 months.

Club legend Xavi has been strongly linked with taking over the crisis-hit club this season

Koeman won the Copa del Rey last season and was given some credit for guiding the team through a difficult campaign having sold Luis Suarez to Atletico Madrid, who promptly won the league with the Uruguayan scoring 21 goals.

This summer Lionel Messi left the club and Antoine Griezmann also moved out as Laporta took desperate measures to trim a wage bill that had been at 95 per cent of the club’s revenue even without Messi.

Free transfers came in – some such as Memphis Depay were seen as Koeman recruits – but they failed to make an impact.

It was Memphis who missed the spot kick on Wednesday night that confirmed a third loss of the season and the end of Koeman’s time in charge.

Nuno Espirito Santo went from manager of the month to being sacked in just 52 DAYS at Spurs... his perfect start papered over the cracks - tactics were poor, Harry Kane was disinterested and the fans turned

* Nuno Espirito Santo was sacked as manager of Tottenham on Monday morning
* It comes after Spurs were beaten by a struggling Man United side on Saturday
* It all started so well for Nuno at Spurs, winning his first three league games 1-0
* Nuno was then named as Premier League's Manager of the Month for August
* However, the start only papered over the cracks which Saturday's defeat proved
* Here Sportsmail looks closer at what and how it all went wrong for Nuno at Spurs

According to the laws of motion, what goes up must come down – and for Nuno Espirito Santo, his crash back to reality proved to be fatal.

On Monday morning, Spurs announced they had sacked the Portuguese boss after just four months into the job, with his dismissal coming 48 hours after their dismal defeat by a Manchester United side on the ropes.

Venomous jeers and boos rang out around Spurs' £1billion stadium when Nuno subbed off Lucas Moura for Steven Bergwijn, which lead to chants of 'you don't know what you're doing' while chairman Daniel Levy sat from up high and listened to what the fans thought.

And with a swing of the axe, the 47-year-old and his coaching staff were relieved of their duties.

Nuno Espirito Santo was sacked by Tottenham on Monday after just four months in charge

'The Club can today announce that Nuno Espirito Santo and his coaching staff Ian Cathro, Rui Barbosa and Antonio Dias have been relieved of their duties,' a club statement read on Monday.

'Fabio Paratici, Managing Director, Football, said: 'I know how much Nuno and his coaching staff wanted to succeed and I regret that we have had to take this decision. Nuno is a true gentleman and will always be welcome here. We should like to thank him and his coaching staff and wish them well for the future'.'

Spurs went on to announce that a 'further coaching update will follow in due course'.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy had seen enough after just 10 Premier League games under Nuno

It is quite the downfall after what was the perfect start to life in north London.

After handling Harry Kane's very difficult transfer saga with sincerity, humility and grace, there were high hopes that this well-mannered and quiet coach could be exactly what Spurs needed after a tumultuous two years under Jose Mourinho.

And for the briefest of moments, it appeared to be that way. Tottenham were matched with reigning champions Manchester City for their opening game of the season, and with Kane not in the squad, Nuno was presented with his first challenge.

He passed it with flying colours, as Son Heung-min and Co ran City ragged to put in what would be their best performance under their new manager.

A week later, Spurs recorded another 1-0 win over Wolves – Nuno's former club – where the first problematic signs started to rear their ugly head.

Spurs were penned into their own half and were unable to put any meaningful attack together before being able to just see out victory at Molineux.

Kane had made his return to the fold and received a warm welcome back from the away support, although he struggled to find the back of the net.

But this was Nuno's second game – time was needed and he had just arrived. It was foolish to really read into any of these issues and make a concrete conclusion about what was to come.

With Spurs flying, it was a return back to north London the following weekend, where Nuno's men would entertain newly-promoted Watford at the Lane.

It was more of the same from Spurs – penned back in their own half and no real identity going forward, despite both Son and Kane leading the line.

It would be Son to break the deadlock and seal all three points against the Hornets, although the South Korean would do so after his delivery from a free-kick into the box managed to evade everyone and luckily nestle into the net.

Again, questions were asked whether this luck could continue but with Spurs sitting pretty at the top of the table with three clean sheets and nine points, who cared?

The perfect start for Nuno was recognised by the Premier League, who named him as Manager of the Month for August. It was well deserved and with arch rivals Arsenal sitting rock bottom of the Premier League, all was well in the white side of north London.

But just like that, everything can change in football with the snap of the fingers.

Following the season's first international break, Spurs returned to play in their first London derby of the campaign – their first of four across September and October – where they faced Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

After winning his first three games, Nuno was named as the Manager of the Month for August

The Eagles were also finding their feet under new boss Patrick Vieira and unlike Nuno, the former Arsenal man had a plan.

Palace tore apart Spurs in south London, beating Nuno's 10-men 3-0 in what would be the beginning of the end.

Such an emphatic defeat to a London rival was painful but again, it was early days for Nuno. A strong performance against bitter enemies Chelsea back at home the following week would be the perfect antidote after being hurt by the Eagles.

It wasn't to be. A second successive 3-0 defeat against the Blues saw Nuno's stock fall with the Spurs faithful, with fans getting restless despite just being five games into their new manager's reign.

Nuno could be forgiven given how he was facing the reigning European champions in Thomas Tuchel's side and they showed signs of fight in the first half. But next up was the Gunners – and this was must-win.

Arsenal had enjoyed a little resurgence under Mikel Arteta and were no longer bottom of the table, but they were still there for the taking. Nuno deployed a 4-3-3 for the game at the Emirates but just minutes into the contest, it almost looked as if Spurs were playing a 4-0-3.

There was no midfield. Spurs were being ruthlessly opened up at ease by the arch-nemesis and were unbelievably 3-0 down by the half-hour mark.

Spurs were stunned and at the point it was a matter of how many goals they were going to lose by. Fortunately, Spurs maintained their composure, got a goal back, but it wasn't enough and it was another three goals conceded to a London rival.

They would regain some form, winning games against fellow strugglers Aston Villa and Newcastle but a 1-0 defeat to West Ham – another fierce rival from the capital – and ultimately, a 3-0 drubbing against United on Saturday proved to be the final nail in Nuno's coffin.

Throughout each of Nuno's five defeats in charge, there seemed to be no sign of progression.

While Mauricio Pochettino struggled in his first few months in charge, there was always an identity, a plan, and style of play that Spurs had even if the results weren't going their way.

For Nuno, the same couldn't be said. His perfect start to the campaign papered over the cracks of what was really going on on the pitch. His players had no idea how to break teams down, how to score and defensively were poor.

Kane looked disinterested and out of sorts – only scoring one Premier League goal during Nuno's short reign. Even Spurs' greatest goalscorer in the modern era couldn't find the back of the net under the former Wolves boss.

The numbers tell a tale. He had one shot, late in the game against Manchester United at the weekend, which struck Harry Maguire and had just four touches in United's area.

For such a prolific scorer he has had a single shot, or none, in every league game he has played this season, bar the 2-1 win over Aston Villa on October 3.

Last season, his average of four shots per game was the Premier League's highest. On Saturday night, there were 32 players ahead of him, almost enough for two at every club. The easy answer is disillusionment after the collapse of the City move, yet plainly Nuno's gameplan did not suit him.

But while it wasn't great for Kane, it was Saturday's game overall that saw Levy reach the boiling point.

Throughout a woeful month of September, Nuno began to question his own players and their commitment to the cause, leaving many to wonder if the Portuguese boss had already lost the dressing room.

Quote:
NUNO'S RECORD AS TOTTENHAM BOSS

Games: 17

Wins: 8

Draws: 2

Losses: 7

Goals scored: 21

Goals conceded: 23
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and his United team arrived at White Hart Lane reeling from their abysmal 5-0 thrashing at the hands of Liverpool, with the supporters of the Manchester club questioning their own manager's future in the days prior.

With Spurs down 1-0 following a superb first-half volley from Cristiano Ronaldo, Nuno brought off Lucas for Bergwijn which prompted an exhasperated crowd to let their feelings known.

The toxicity had spilled onto the pitch and it was curtains for Nuno. There was no gameplan, no spirit and no fight from Tottenham and it was there for all to see.

Since winning the Manager of the Month award, it took just 52 days until he would be relieved from his duties.

Some may argue that his sacking was extremely premature and he wasn't given anywhere near enough time to implement his ideas.

The team have looked flat under his leadership, failing to create chances and test opposition. It spelled disaster for Nuno, who was sacked 52 days after winning the Manager of the Month

Others will point to the manner of the five defeats during his 10 games in charge and his last season at Wolves as evidence that it was never going to improve.

For Levy, it was the latter and now the new search for a manager begins.

Nuno will surely feel hard done by given how he's become the fastest Spurs manager to lose his job in the Premier League era, but may not be surprised when he looks back at the club's recent history with hiring and firing coaches.

What is for certain is that there is about to be another twist or turn in Spurs' rollercoaster of a season and whether Nuno's successor can stop this current crop of players in freefall.

Tottenham confirm Antonio Conte as their new manager on £13m, 18-month deal - with the option of another year - after ruthlessly sacking Nuno Espirito Santo following dismal defeat by Man United

* Tottenham have confirmed Antonio Conte's appointment as their new boss
* The Italian has signed a deal until 2023 with an option to extend his contract
* Conte had been linked with the Manchester United job in recent weeks with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer under pressure
* The 52-year-old has also explained why he snubbed Tottenham in the summer

Antonio Conte has been confirmed as the new Tottenham manager.

As MailOnline exclusively revealed yesterday morning, Nuno Espirito Santo was axed as Spurs head coach, the club confirming the Portuguese's departure just before 10am.

And Tottenham's increasingly influential director of football Fabio Paratici moved quickly to identify Nuno's replacement, with Conte signing a deal until 2023 with an option to extend. He has already met the players as attention swiftly turns to Thursday's Europa Conference League clash with Vitesse.

Conte said: 'I am extremely happy to return to coaching, and to do so at a Premier League club that has the ambition to be a protagonist again.

'Tottenham Hotspur has state-of-the-art facilities and one of the best stadiums in the world. I can't wait to start working to convey to the team and the fans the passion, mentality and determination that have always distinguished me, as a player and as a coach.

'Last summer our union did not happen because the end of my relationship with Inter was still too recent and emotionally too involved with the end of the season, so I felt that it wasn’t yet the right time to return to coaching.

'But the contagious enthusiasm and determination of Daniel Levy in wanting to entrust me with this task had already hit the mark. Now that the opportunity has returned, I have chosen to take it with great conviction.'

Antonio Conte has been confirmed as Tottenham's new manager on a deal until 2023. He said he was excited to return to the Premier League and help Spurs become 'protagonists'. The Italian arrives at the club barely 24 hours after the sacking of Nuno Espirito Santo. Conte made a U-turn on his decision to snub Spurs and said he was convinced by Daniel Levy

It is understood Conte, who has a long-term relationship with Paratici, has agreed a contract with a pro-rata salary of around £13million.

But Tottenham inadvertently announced Conte's arrival early, with a post going up saying 'Welcome to Tottenham Hotspur, Antonio Conte' on Twitter's advertising platforms. It showed Conte posing with the club's home shirt.

The post was hastily deleted before Spurs then officially confirmed their new manager around midday.

There was growing optimism at Tottenham on Monday afternoon that Conte would be their next manager, with one well-placed source insisting the deal was as good as done.

Indeed, players were told to expect the new manager to be in situ to take this morning's training session at the club's Enfield HQ.

And his arrival was rubber-stamped late on Monday night.

Conte came close to joining Spurs in the summer but eventually decided against taking the role amid concerns over the club's ambition.

Conte's appointment will be viewed as a major victory for the club given his standing as one of the planet's leading coaches.

He has been heavily linked with replacing under-fire Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Manchester United.

And the 52-year-old's track record of proven success will come as a reason for huge optimism for supporters, who have grown fed-up at the direction the club is headed.

Sportsmail reported on Sunday how Nuno was on the brink of the sack following the disastrous defeat and performance during the 3-0 loss to United on Saturday, the game that sealed his fate.

Sportsmail understands Nuno arrived at the club's Enfield training ground yesterday morning as normal only to be informed of the club's decision to remove him.

Nuno is understood to have earned in the region of £3million a year at Spurs and is now due compensation, but he is expected to be placed on gardening leave until he finds a new job.

Paratici said: 'I know how much Nuno and his coaching staff wanted to succeed and I regret that we have had to take this decision.

'Nuno is a true gentleman and will always be welcome here.

'We would like to thank him and his coaching staff and wish them well for the future.'

But now, attention turns to a fascinating new era at Spurs. After Thursday's Europa Conference League encounter, Tottenham travel to Merseyside on Sunday to take on Rafa Benitez's Everton at Goodison Park.

Norwich SACK manager Daniel Farke just hours after he guided them to their first league win of the season at Brentford... and lifted them off the bottom of the Premier League!

* Norwich City sacked Daniel Farke after he guided them to their first league win
* Farke's dismissal came after Norwich beat Brentford 2-1 on Saturday afternoon
* The 45-year-old received his marching orders after he finished his media duties
* Norwich sit 19th in the table after claiming just five points from their 11 games

Norwich City have officially sacked Daniel Farke and confirmed that the 45-year-old will leave the club with immediate effect.

Farke's dismissal came after Norwich beat Brentford 2-1 on Saturday afternoon to claim their first Premier League victory of the 2021-2022 season.

According to The Athletic, Farke received his marching orders after he had completed his media duties at the Brentford Community Stadium.

Norwich have also dismissed their assistant head coach Edmund Riemer, first team coach Christopher John and head of performance Chris Domogalla.

Norwich City have officially sacked Daniel Farke (above) and confirmed that the 45-year-old will leave the club with immediate effect. Farke reportedly received his marching orders after he had completed his media duties at the Brentford Community Stadium

Norwich released a statement saying: 'Norwich City can confirm that head coach Daniel Farke has left the club with immediate effect.

'Daniel departs Carrow Road having overseen 208 competitive games at the helm across a four-and-a-half-year spell.

'Backroom staff members Eddie Riemer, Chris Domogalla and Christopher John have all also left the club.

'The club will issue a further update on its first team staff in due course.'

While their Sporting director Stuart Webber added: 'In continuing to demand the very best for our football club, this decision was not an easy one.

'I know how determined Daniel and his staff were to succeed at this level, but we feel that now is the right time for a change to give ourselves the best opportunity of retaining our Premier League status.

'All at Norwich City should be forever grateful to Daniel and his staff for the significant role they have played in our journey.

'They helped deliver two Championship titles, many memorable moments and they all fully bought into our philosophy and what it means to be part of this football club.

'Daniel and his staff will always be welcome back here. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank them all for their hard work and wish them well for the future.

The club's Sporting director Stuart Webber thanked Farke and said he would always be welcome back at the club. As it stands, Norwich sit 19th in the Premier League table after securing just five points from their opening 11 games of the Premier League season

'It's important that we now look forward. We have 27 league games remaining and a long way to go in the current season.

'We know we have the ability within our playing squad and staff to start picking up points and climbing the league table.'

As it stands, Norwich sit 19th in the Premier League table after securing just five points from their opening 11 games of the Premier League season.

Nevertheless, the club's Sporting director, has said that Farke would always be welcome back to the club and thanked him for the work he had done.

Farke joined Norwich in April 2017 when he arrived from Borussia Dortmund to replace Alex Neil.

Norwich finished 14th in the Championship during his first year at the club. However, the following year, they were promoted to the Premier League.

The Canaries were immediately relegated back to the Championship but Farke retained his position as the manager and guided back up to the top-flight the following year.

However, it seems likely that Norwich will suffer another relegation - as they have scored less and conceded more goals than any other team in the league.

Aston Villa SACK manager Dean Smith after miserable run of five straight defeats... but Jack Grealish hails his former boss - a boyhood Villa fan - as 'the real GOAT'

* Aston Villa are on the hunt for a new manager after sacking Dean Smith
* Villa have lost their last five matches in a row - including Southampton on Friday
* Smith took over as Villa boss in 2018 with the club in the Championship

Aston Villa have sacked manager Dean Smith after their defeat by Southampton on Friday, which leaves them 15th in the Premier League table.

Smith took over as Villa manager in 2018 and led the club out of the Championship and into the Premier League. They finished 11th last season but have endured a slide in the current campaign - the defeat at St Mary's was their fifth straight loss and their 18th Premier League loss in the calendar year.

Villa lost key man Jack Grealish to Manchester City in the summer and an array of new signings are still continuing to adapt to life at Villa Park.

Aston Villa have sacked manager Dean Smith after Friday's defeat against Southampton. Villa's defeat at St Mary's has proven to be the final straw for Smith at the club

Sportsmail understands Rangers boss Steven Gerrard is high on Aston Villa’s list of possible targets.

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl is another who has admirers at Villa Park while sporting director Johan Lange has a long association with both Brentford boss Thomas Frank and Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand.

Remarkably, Smith is the fifth Premier League manager to be sacked so far this season - more than the four who lost their jobs across the entirety of last season.

Villa CEO Christian Purslow said in a statement on Sunday: 'When Dean joined us in October 2018 our team was really struggling in The Championship.

'He immediately transformed the atmosphere and performances and achieved the ultimate success of leading Villa back to the Premier League within the same season - a rare feat.

'He then secured our place in the Premier League after a tough campaign and took us to a Cup Final at Wembley.

'However, after a good start to last season, this year we have not seen the continuous improvement in results, performances and league position which we have all been looking for.

'For this reason we have decided to make a change now to allow time for a new head coach to make an impact.

'The board would like to sincerely thank Dean for his many excellent achievements, on and off the pitch, during this time. Everyone knows how much Aston Villa means to Dean and his family.

'He has represented the club with distinction and dignity - universally liked and respected by everybody associated with Aston Villa – our staff, players and supporters alike. We wish him the very best.'

Grealish also paid tribute to Smith, saying: 'No1 will ever compare - the real goat'.

Villa CEO Christian Purslow (right) paid tribute to Smith as his departure was announced. In his three years at Villa, Smith led the club from the Championship to the Premier League

Villa will now search for Smith's replacement over the international break.

Reacting to the news on Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher said: 'We all felt it going into the Friday night game.

'It's interesting with managers. If a manager feels his goalkeeper or striker's not good enough, he'll change them. Now clubs look at managers like that.

'In the past it had to be really bad to sack the manager. That's what it feels like with Manchester United, they're waiting for it to get that bad.

'Villa obviously feel they can get someone better than Dean Smith - he did really well last season! In the past you'd get a run of 10 bad games. The international break is an absolute killer for managers.'

Newcastle finally confirm Eddie Howe as their new boss on a contract until 2024, with Saudi owners moving on after Unai Emery turned them down - and with cash to spend in January

* Eddie Howe has been appointed as Steve Bruce's successor at Newcastle United
* The former Bournemouth boss watched at Brighton with the new ownership
* He looked to have missed out on the role when Unai Emery was targeted
* But Emery performed a late U-turn on Tuesday afternoon to stay at Villarreal
* Howe, 43, has been out of work since leaving Bournemouth back in 2020

Newcastle's new Saudi-led regime have finally appointed their first manager, with Eddie Howe having signed a two-and-a-half-year deal to take over at St James' Park.

The 43-year-old had been out of a job since leaving Bournemouth following their relegation from the Premier League two seasons ago, but after talks progressed last week and he watched their draw at Brighton from the stands, Howe was officially confirmed in the post on Monday.

'It is a great honour to become head coach of a club with the stature and history of Newcastle United. It is a very proud day for me and my family,' Howe said.

'This is a wonderful opportunity, but there is also a lot of work ahead of us and I am eager to get onto the training ground to start working with the players.

'I would like to thank the club's owners for this opportunity and thank the club's supporters for the incredible welcome they have already given me. I am very excited to begin our journey together.'

Howe will be taking charge of the club with the world's richest owners, Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund thought to be worth more than £700billion. First, though, he faces a battle against relegation and there are still nine games to play before he will be able to strengthen his squad in the January transfer window.

His name did not have the backing of all members close to the new consortium when first floated four weeks ago, with Unai Emery becoming the clearly favoured candidate - but the Spaniard rejected an approach and has stayed on at Villarreal.

Amanda Staveley, however, was always keen to speak with Howe and he was interviewed two weeks ago. Some of his former Bournemouth players in the Newcastle dressing-room - which include Callum Wilson, Ryan Fraser and Matt Ritchie - had already communicated their support for their old boss to Staveley.

Eddie Howe has landed the role of leading Newcastle, the world's richest football club. Newcastle's new Saudi owners, fronted by Amanda Staveley with her husband Mehrdad Ghodoussi, have made their first managerial appointment since sealing a £305m takeover. The club now enjoys the incredible wealth of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, which is worth over £300billion

Staveley said: 'We have been incredibly impressed by Eddie through what has been a rigorous recruitment process.

'As well as his obvious achievements with AFC Bournemouth, where he had a transformational impact, he is a passionate and dynamic coach who has clear ideas about taking this team and club forward.

'He is a great fit for what we are trying to build here. We are delighted to welcome Eddie and his staff to St. James' Park and very much look forward to working together towards our collective ambitions.'

Sportsmail understands Howe would also have been the man the previous ownership turned to had Steve Bruce been sacked on their watch. Lee Charnley - the managing director who remains at the club - is thought to have supported Howe's cause in light of the takeover.

After watching on at Brighton's Amex Stadium on Saturday, Howe will now work towards his first game in charge, a home game against Brentford on November 20 following the international break.

Interim boss Graeme Jones believes that while Howe is inheriting a side winless in the league and sat 19th, five points from safety, there is a togetherness that he can build on.

'I think he's seen a togetherness, I think he's seen a team that added a bit more possession, bit more control, especially second half on the ball,' Jones said.

'I think he'll inherit a team that off the ball was prepared and capable of going and pressing a brilliant Brighton team with pressing football and keeping high up the pitch.

'So I think he'll have seen that it's improved from Crystal Palace.'

Howe spent 11 years with Bournemouth across two separate spells, the second one lasting eight seasons, and pulled off a huge achievement to take them from League One through to the Premier League with limited resources.

He began his first spell with the club at the foot of League 2 and fought off a points deduction to maintain their Football League status back in 2009.

New Newcastle manager Howe (second from right, bottom row) was pictured in the crowd at the club's away match against Brighton at the Amex Stadium on Saturday night. He sat next to Staveley, whose consortium bought out Mike Ashley in October

Howe had looked set for a return to management with Celtic earlier this year before the Scottish side appointed Ange Postecoglou after negotiations broke down.

Howe thought he had missed out on the role when Emery emerged as the preferred candidate last weekend.

The Spaniard's advisers - including his brother, Igor - were in the UK last week in anticipation of his unveiling ahead of Newcastle's trip to Brighton.

But when Emery performed a U-turn late last Tuesday night, attention returned to Howe.

Howe also impressed during his interview by outlining his vision for immediate improvement, with Newcastle winless in the Premier League.

It is thought he shared the view of the hierarchy that fitness levels and organisation could be better, and that the current squad is performing way below its capabilities after a 11-match winless start.

Howe is happy to work alongside current interim boss Jones and is expected to add coaches Stephen Perches, Jason Tindall and Simon Weatherstone to his backroom staff at St James'.

Newcastle face a defining run in their season with Brentford, Norwich and Burnley all in the next four.

Steven Gerrard is BACK in the Premier League as Aston Villa confirm Liverpool legend as their new boss after paying Rangers £2.5m - and now his Anfield return is just a month away!

* Aston Villa have appointed Steven Gerrard as their new manager at Villa Park
* The Villans have been on the hunt for a new boss after sacking Dean Smith
* Gerrard, 41, has impressed during a hugely successful stint as Rangers boss
* The Liverpool legend arrives with the club hovering above the relegation places
* Gerrard will make his Anfield return on December 11 when Liverpool host Villa

Aston Villa have announced the appointment of Steven Gerrard as their new manager, with the Liverpool legend set for a return to Anfield next month.

The Villans parted ways with Dean Smith earlier this month after he oversaw a run of five league defeats on the bounce to leave the West Midlands club hovering above the relegation zone in 16th position.

Gerrard was Villa's No 1 target to fill the vacancy, with the club's owners Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens, as well chief executive Christian Purslow impressed by the job Gerrard, 41, has done at Ibrox, his first in management.

'Aston Villa is a club with a rich history and tradition in English football and I am immensely proud to become its new Head Coach,' Gerrard told the club's official website.

'In my conversations with Nassef, Wes and the rest of the Board, it was apparent how ambitious their plans are for the club and I am looking forward to helping them achieve their aims.

'I would like to express my sincere gratitude to everybody associated with Glasgow Rangers for giving me the opportunity to manage such an iconic football club. Helping them secure a record-breaking 55th league title will always hold a special place in my heart. I would like to wish the players, staff and supporters the very best for the future.'

Gerrard took to Instagram to explain his decision to leave Ibrox, with Gers fans disappointed that he has left the Scottish club after three years in Glasgow.

'I want to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone associated with Glasgow Rangers, especially the fans, for the love and support you've all shown me during my time in Scotland,' he posted.

Winning "55" will always hold a special place in my heart - each and every one of you played a part in that and, believe me, there will be many more to come.

'I hope in time you can understand and accept my decision to move on but I honestly fell in love with the club and will always follow the team. Once a Ranger, always a Ranger #55 '.

It is no secret that Gerrard's ultimate goal is to manage Liverpool, the club with which he is synonymous after a glittering playing career at Anfield. Bringing success to Villa could be his final stepping stone to his dream job, once Jurgen Klopp eventually departs.

His Villa side take on Liverpool at Anfield on December 11, which will be Gerrard's first return to Merseyside since leaving the club in 2015.

His Villa side take on Liverpool at Anfield on December 11, which will be Gerrard's first return to Merseyside since leaving the club in 2015.

Gerrard sent a message to Rangers fans saying he hopes they understand his decision to leave. The Liverpool legend arrives with Villa languishing above the drop zone following five defeats. Dean Smith, a boyhood Villa fan, was sacked by the club after a run of five straight defeats. Gerrard is tasked with staving off the threat of relegation with Villa hovering in 16th place. Gerrard will return to Anfield for the first time on December 11 when Villa travel to Liverpool

Gerrard won the Scottish Premiership title last term, breaking Celtic's sequence of nine in a row and going the entire league season unbeaten, and although he has shown fierce loyalty to the club, he has decided to embrace the challenge on offer at Villa Park. Rangers have been paid £2.5million in compensation.

Gerrard was the leading name on Villa's managerial shortlist that contained Brentford boss Thomas Frank and Denmark coach Kasper Hjulmand - although the latter insisted he had no interest in taking the job. Belgium boss Roberto Martinez was also a candidate, although he had reservations about the job.

Former Chelsea boss Frank Lampard and Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl were also considered by Villa chiefs for the post, but Purslow had a connection with Gerrard from his previous role in the Liverpool boardroom.

'The Board of Aston Villa are delighted to appoint Steven as our new Head Coach,' Purslow said.

'Since moving into coaching after his illustrious playing career, Steven began by managing and developing top young players in the Liverpool FC Academy which is experience we value highly at Aston Villa.

'He then took the brave decision to test himself in the intense and high pressured environment of the Scottish Old Firm. His subsequent achievement in winning the Premiership title with Glasgow Rangers really caught our eye as did his experience in Europe.

'It has been very clear in our discussions with him that Steven's coaching ambitions, philosophy and values entirely match those of Aston Villa.

'We are excited he has agreed to lead us in the next phase of our ambitious plans as we look to build on the progress made since Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens took over the club in 2018.'

Gerrard joined Rangers in May 2018 and always said he is happy with the Gers, but a move south allows the former England captain to spend more time with his family, who still live in the Liverpool area.

His assistants Tommy Culshaw, Gary McAllister, first-team coach Michael Beale and head of performance Jordan Milsom are likely to follow him to Villa.

It is unclear where that would leave existing Villa coaches Aaron Danks and Austin MacPhee, who were hired under Smith earlier this year, while goalkeeping coach Neil Cutler also remains from the Smith era. Smith's assistant Craig Shakespeare left the club with him.

Gerrard has the remainder of the international break to assess his new squad before the Villans entertain Brighton at Villa Park on November 20.

Though the majority of Villa's players were sad to see Smith, a boyhood Villa fan, depart after five successive defeats, Sportsmail understands Gerrard arriving has been greeted with widespread excitement in the dressing room, with senior figures already aware of the need to make an immediate impression.

Gerrard leaves Rangers top of the Scottish Premiership table, leading Celtic by four points, with the only blot on his copybook a Champions League qualifying defeat by Malmo which saw them drop into the Europa League this season.

As a player, Gerrard scored more goals against Villa - 13 in 27 games across all competitions - than any other side he faced in his career.

baru 8 hari sejak dipecat Villa, eh langsung melatih Norwich. tapi kayaknya Norwich akan sulit bertahan, feeling sih bakal jadi salah 1 tim yg akan degradasi

Giovanni van Bronckhorst has be confirmed as the new manager of Scottish giants Rangers. Van Bronckhorst returns to Ibrox after a 20-year spell away from the club in his playing days

The Dutchman will be Steven Gerrard's Ibrox replacement after his exit to Aston Villa. Van Bronckhorst is waiting for his Rangers work permit so may not take charge this weekend

Rafa Benitez's Everton misery is over as he is SACKED with brutal 40-word statement in the wake of dismal defeat at Norwich... and at just 200 days, he's the second shortest-serving Toffees boss EVER

* Everton have sacked boss Rafa Benitez amid their dismal run of performances
* The former Liverpool manager has been a controversial figure in the dugout
* He has overseen a terrible run of results, losing nine of their last 13 games
* Everton's 2-1 defeat at Norwich City proved the final nail in Benitez's coffin
* Wayne Rooney is leading the odds to takeover at Goodison Park this season

Everton have sacked Rafa Benitez after the Toffees' embarrassing 2-1 defeat at Norwich City proved the final nail in the coffin for the Liverpool legend.

In an ice-cold 40-word statement, Everton confirmed the news on Sunday afternoon.

'Everton Football Club can confirm the departure of Rafael Benitez as First Team manager,' a statement read.

'Benitez, who joined Everton in June 2021, has left the Club with immediate effect.

'An update on a permanent replacement will be made in due course.'

Norwich - who had previously failed to score in six league matches - consigned Benitez's side to a ninth defeat in 13 matches on Saturday, leading to a furious reaction from the travelling masses.

One fan invaded the pitch in a failed attempt to get to the Spaniard, while two banners were unfurled in the away end. One read: 'Get out of our club', while the other said: 'Sack the board'.

Under-fire Rafa Benitez has been sacked after Everton called an emergency board meeting. The Toffees were consigned to their ninth defeat in 13 league games at Norwich on Saturday

Everton's hierarchy held an emergency meeting following their dismal display at Carrow Road, and on Sunday morning, the Merseyside outfit confirmed that they have parted ways with the 61-year-old.

In a statement on his personal website, Benitez said: 'We knew it wouldn't be easy, and that it was a big challenge, both emotionally and in terms of sport.

My love for this city, for Merseyside and its people, made me accept this challenge, but it is only when you are inside that you realise the magnitude of the task.

'From the very first day, my staff and myself worked as we always do, with commitment and full dedication, we didn't only have to get results, but we also had to win over people's hearts.

Supporters hold up a 'Benitez - Get out of our club' banner during their 2-1 loss at Norwich

'However, the financial situation and then the injuries that followed made things even harder. I am convinced that we would have been better once the injured players were back and with the arrival of the new signings.

'The road to success isn't easy and sadly, nowadays in football there is a search for immediate results and there is always less and less patience; unfortunately circumstances have determined the results and it won't be possible to continue this project.

'In any case, thank you to the board, to the staff, to the players, and to those fans who have supported us during this time.'

Benitez was appointed last summer as the club's replacement for Carlo Ancelotti, who left the Toffees for a return to Real Madrid. The Spaniard's appointment was divisive from the outset, given his history with arch-rivals Liverpool - where he won the Champions League in 2005.

In 2007, Benitez labelled Everton a 'small club' following a Merseyside Derby and local police investigated a threatening banner which read: 'We know where you live, don't sign' before his appointment last summer.

Last month, Benitez insisted that he needed more time to turn the tide at Goodison Park, and pointed to 'years of frustration; before his arrival in a bid to get supporters on side.

After yesterday's defeat, Benitez said: 'I am a professional and I have enough experience.'

'I came here to fix issues that were coming from the last five years. What I have to do now is analyse the mistakes we are making and make sure we avoid that for the future. The rest is not in my hands. I just try to do my job.'

On the supporter who charged towards him, Benitez said: 'I didn't see the fan. I was concentrating on the game. After I saw someone was in the middle of the pitch but that's it.

Everton chief Farhad Moshiri has appointed big-name managers but may go in a new direction. Former Toffees star Wayne Rooney is the bookmakers' favourite to take the post at Everton

'We are really disappointed because we lost. We are disappointed because the fans have been travelling to support the team and it's not the ideal situation.

'But we cannot change this situation now. We have to learn because we cannot make these mistakes in the future.'

Benitez's 200 days in charge at Everton makes him the club's second shortest-serving manager after Sam Allardyce, who lasted just 167 days in the hotseat.

Having tried, and failed, with big-name managers such as Benitez, Ancelotti and Ronald Koeman, it remains to be seen which direction the Everton hierarchy go next.

Quote:
NEXT MANAGER ODDS

Wayne Rooney 2/1

Roberto Martinez 11/4

Duncan Ferguson 3/1

Frank Lampard 15/2

Graham Potter 15/2

Paulo Fonseca 14/1
Former England captain and former Everton star Wayne Rooney is currently the bookmakers' favourite to takeover, having worked wonders at Derby County, while Benitez's assistant Duncan Ferguson is also among the leading contenders.

Rooney guided the Rams to safety on the final day in his first season in charge and they are currently just eight points from safety despite administration, a transfer embargo and a 21 point deduction.

Sky Sports have claimed that Rooney remains settled at Derby despite their financial issues, but would find it difficult to turn down the chance to manage his boyhood club.

Ferguson enjoyed a brief but successful spell as caretaker boss at Everton in 2019 before the appointment of Ancelotti and is keen to take the job on permanently.

Meanwhile, Belgium boss Roberto Martinez is the second favourite at 11/4 to return for a second stint at Goodison Park with bookmaker Betfair.
