Marcus Rashford hands Manchester United a boost as he targets return to contact training this week after delaying shoulder surgery to play at Euro 2020

* Marcus Rashford had surgery on a long-standing shoulder issue back in August
* The Man United player had delayed the operation until after the Euro 2020 final
* He has since been spotted at Carrington, taking part in regular rehab sessions
* Rashford has now told fans he could return to contact by the end of the week
* He has a consultation on Friday and will be given the green light if all goes well

Marcus is hoping to make a return to Manchester United's first team squad for the Premier League fixture at Leicester City on October 16.

The England striker confirmed on Monday that he will see a consultant at the end of this week and hopes to be given the green light to return to contact training following shoulder surgery on August 6.

If all goes to plan, United intend to give Rashford a run-out in a behind closed doors friendly during the international break.

The 23-year-old revealed on Twitter: 'I see the doctor on Friday for a consultation. All being well, I will get the green (light) to join in with contact training again.'

Rashford, who has missed eight matches in all competitions so far this term for United, had also been managing an ankle ligament tear which he sustained in March but his spell on the sidelines has allowed that to heal.

Manchester United confirmed that Rashford would be going under the knife following a short holiday and rest away from football in July.

They explained how both the club and player felt it was the right time to address the ongoing issue with his shoulder.

They also outlined how Rashford had been struggling with the problem ever since he tore the muscle in November.

He could now return to light-contact training by the end of the week if given the all-clear. Rashford had been struggling with an issue after sustaining a muscle tear back in November. However, he made the decision to delay the operation until after the Euro 2020 final

However, Rashford previously stated the the surgery went well and that he was happy with his decision.

He posted a photo of himself looking healthy at home after the operation with the accompanying caption: 'Thank you for all the well wishes. I had my surgery on Friday morning and everything went very well.

'A little sore but other than that I’m feeling good. Hope you’re all having a great day!'

Rashford (right) was then spotted at Manchester United's training ground with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (left) as he continued to take positive steps forward in his recovery. The 23-year-old is also yet to play alongside Cristiano Ronaldo after he returned to United

Rashford was then spotted at Manchester United's training ground as he continued to take positive steps forward in his recovery.

Nevertheless, Rashford will be itching to get back to light-contract training as he looks to fight for a place in the United team.

The 23-year-old is also yet to play alongside Cristiano Ronaldo after he returned to Old Trafford this summer.

Rashford was one of the first players to share his delight at CR7's return to United.

He tweeted saying: 'Wow wow wow, he's home'.

Nevertheless, it will be a while until Rashford lines up alongside his new United team-mate.

In the meantime, he will support the Red Devils in their upcoming Champions League fixture against Villarreal on Wednesday and their Premier League fixture against Everton on Saturday.

Harry Maguire to face 'a few weeks' on the sidelines with injury, confirms Ole Gunnar Solskjaer but Luke Shaw has outside chance of making Champions League clash against Villarreal despite missing training on Tuesday morning

* Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire both limped out of Man United's loss to Aston Villa
* Maguire will face a few weeks out on the sidelines but Shaw could play this week
* The Red Devils take on Villarreal in the Champions League on Wednesday night
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side already have Aaron Wan-Bissaka suspended
* Marcus Rashford took part in light training ahead of his return to contact action

Harry Maguire will be out for 'a few weeks', says Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, though Luke Shaw could be fit enough to take on Villarreal on Wednesday.

Both players limped out of United's 1-0 defeat at home to Aston Villa on Saturday lunchtime and United captain Maguire is now set for a period on the treatment table that will also rule him out of England's October international games.

Shaw has not returned to training yet but Solskjaer is hopeful that the left-back can make it in time of the visit of Unai Emery's men at Old Trafford, with United already missing right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka due to suspension.

Harry Maguire will face a few weeks out injured, says Man United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Maguire limped out of United's 1-0 Premier League loss to Aston Villa on Saturday afternoon

'Luke has been in today, so I'll give him a chance to be involved tomorrow,' Solskjaer said in a press conference ahead of their Champions League tie with Villarreal. 'He didn't train with the team. Harry is more or less definitely out, it doesn't look good. So apart from that, from the bruised pride from the result, we should be ready to go.

United lost their first Champions League match to Young Boys earlier this month and will be aiming for their first points of the season against a Villarreal side who beat them on penalties in last May's Europa League final.

Left-back Shaw came off during the first-half of United's defeat to Aston Villa and was replaced by Diogo Dalot, who is expected to replace Wan-Bissaka in the right-back role on Wednesday night.

United captain Maguire, meanwhile, picked up his injury in the second-half while challenging Danny Ings in the penalty and tried to carry on after picking up the knock, but was eventually substituted for Victor Lindelof.

Luke Shaw (right) also limped out of the game but could still face Villarreal on Wednesday

Lindelof is now the favourite to replace him at centre-back but Eric Bailly is another option. Phil Jones is unavailable as he was not named in United's 25-man squad for the coming season.

United were handed a boost this week after Marcus Rashford confirmed he is hoping to receive the green light to start contact training after his shoulder operation.

It was decided after England's Euro 2020 campaign that the 23-year-old would undergo an operation on his shoulder to fix a long-standing problem, with Rashford playing the second-half of last season with the help of injections to help the pain.

Rashford revealed on Twitter on Monday : 'I see the doctor on Friday for a consultation. All being well, I will get the green (light) to join in with contact training again.'

The United and England star, who took part in light training on Tuesday away from the first-team squad preparing for the Villarreal game, could be in line for his club's first game after the October international break at Leicester City on October 16.

Amad Diallo was another United player who took part in light training alongside Rashford, with the young forward yet to play this season due to a thigh problem.

Marcus Rashford marks return from injury by scoring twice in behind-closed-doors friendly against Blackburn Rovers in his first appearance for Man United since disappointing Europa League final

* Man United faced Blackburn Rovers in a friendly during the international break
* Marcus Rashford underwent surgery for a shoulder injury after Euro 2020
* The 23-year-old has not featured for the Red Devils since Europa League defeat
* The England international returned to full training at Carrington last week

Marcus Rashford remains on course for a return to Manchester United first team action after scoring in a behind closed doors friendly against Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday.

The England international has targeted United's clash against Leicester City on October 16 for his comeback following shoulder surgery and was pleased to come through Wednesday's 3-0 friendly win unscathed.

'So good to get some minutes under my belt today,' the 23-year-old tweeted after scoring twice.

Rashford returned to full contact training last Friday after being cleared by the club doctor and has been working hard to prove he is strong enough to figure against Leicester City.

Rashford hasn't featured for the Red Devils since his disappointing display in the Europa League final defeat to Villarreal in May.

But the 23-year-old revealed on Twitter last week that he would return to training after being given the green light.

'I see the doctor on Friday for a consultation. All being well, I will get the green (light) to join in with contact training again,' he posted.

Rashford, who has missed 10 matches in all competitions so far this term for United, had also been managing an ankle ligament tear which he sustained in March but his spell on the sidelines has allowed that to heal.

Marcus Rashford marked his return from injury with two goals in Man United's friendly. Rashford had been struggling with shoulder and ankles issues throughout last season. The 23-year-old underwent surgery in July and revealed that the surgery was successful. The forward delayed the surgery until after international duty with the Three Lions at the Euros. Rashford returned to training at Carrington last week before starting against Blackburn

United confirmed in summer that Rashford would be going under the knife following a short holiday and rest away from football in July.

They explained how both the club and player felt it was the right time to address the ongoing issue with his shoulder.

They also outlined how Rashford had been struggling with the problem ever since he tore the muscle in November but he had continued to play through the pain barrier for United and then England during Euro 2020.

But he still managed to score 21 goals and register 13 assists in 46 appearances last term, which left many pondering what numbers he could produce once fully fit.

He didn't feature as much as he would have liked for Gareth Southgate's Three Lions in their rampant Euros run and sadly his campaign ended on a sour note when he missed a spot-kick in England's final penalty shootout against champions Italy.

The England international's return to action and the fact he started the friendly on Wednesday could indicate that he is in contention to face Leicester once the Premier League returns after the international break.

Rashford took to Twitter after the match on Wednesday to say: 'So good to get some minutes under my belt today.'

Speaking last week, Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said he hoped Rashford could be available after the break.

'Marcus is fit, he's worked really hard, but he's not had any contact [until now]. If his shoulder can take the contact now, he should be ready after the internationals,' he said, via the Manchester Evening News.

United are using the international breaks to strengthen squad sharpness and the Red Devils' other players who haven't gone on international duty were also expected to feature against Blackburn.

In the September international break, United welcomed Stoke City to Old Trafford as a second-string side lost 4-3.

His presence could prove timely with United likely to be without Edinson Cavani and Fred who have been called up by Uruguay and Brazil respectively and are due to face each other at 1.30am UK time on Friday October 15.

United kick-off against Leicester at 3pm on Saturday.

Manchester United suffer potentially HUGE injury blow as centre-back Raphael Varane is forced off in Nations League final before half-time

Manchester United will be left sweating over the fitness of Raphael Varane after he limped off injured against Spain on Sunday night.

Varane winced as he lengthened his stride and cut out a low cross from Gavi at the expense of a corner five minutes before the interval.

It seemed innocuous but the United centre-half signalled towards the bench immediately and, although he tried to continue was soon on the floor asking for treatment.

As a result, Deschamps summoned Dayot Upamecano to replace him. It was a reminder, if needed, of the depth of quality at his disposal.

United will be concerned over the extent of Varane's injury, given he was seen sitting on the bench with ice strapped to his right quad.

Should he be ruled out of action for the time being, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be forced to face Leicester without both Varane and Harry Maguire.

The injury will come as a blow to the club - considering they paid £40million to attain his services from Real Madrid over summer.

As it stands, the World Cup winner has only made seven appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils.

Injury nightmare for Man United as Raphael Varane is ruled out for a 'few weeks' with his groin problem... ahead of key games against Leicester, Liverpool, Spurs and City - and with Harry Maguire already out

* Raphael Varane had scans after limping out of France's victory over Spain
* Manchester United have now ruled the French defender out for a 'few weeks'
* Varane could now miss a nightmare run of fixtures over the next three weeks
* Central defensive partner Harry Maguire is still recovering from an ankle injury

Raphael Varane will miss a crucial run of fixtures for Manchester United after the club confirmed he will be out of action for 'a few weeks' with a groin muscle injury.

Varane had scans on Tuesday after limping out of France's victory over Spain in the Nations League final at the weekend.

United released a statement saying: 'Raphael Varane sustained a groin muscle injury in the UEFA Nations League final and has commenced rehabilitation at the club. He will be out for a few weeks.'

Raphael Varane will be out of action 'for a few weeks', Manchester United have confirmed. The 28-year-old suffered a groin injury in France's Nations League final win on Sunday

It means that United's new £43million signing could miss a series of fixtures in the space of three weeks that includes Premier League games against Leicester, Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester City, as well as a Champions League double header with Atalanta.

Varane spent the second half of France's match sat on the bench with an ice pack strapped to his right thigh, and flew back from Milan after the game on a private jet with his United team-mate Paul Pogba.

The Frenchman's injury lay-off could not have come at a worse time for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with Varane's central defensive partner Harry Maguire still recovering from an ankle injury that has kept him out of the last two games and England's World Cup qualifiers.

If Maguire fails to recover in time for Saturday's trip to Leicester, Solskjaer is likely to play Eric Bailly alongside Victor Lindelof.

Fit-again Phil Jones is another option but he has not started a league game for 22 months.

It's understood that Maguire did some light training at Carrington on Monday after missing the last two games, but did not take part in the main session.

Marcus Rashford is also set to be available for the first time this season after declaring that he has recovered from the shoulder injury that required surgery in August.

Rashford, who had an operation to repair a muscle tear in his left shoulder that had been troubling him for almost a year, scored twice on his comeback in a behind-closed-doors game against Blackburn last week.

Harry Maguire admits he has still not returned to training with Manchester United as defender continues recovery from a calf injury suffered against Aston Villa last month... but declares he will be 'back on the pitch soon'

* Harry Maguire has missed Manchester United's last two games in all comps
* But despite resuming light training he is still not back with team-mates
* News means United will highly likely be without either first choice defenders
* Raphael Varane is also out ahead of clash against Leicester City on Saturday

Manchester United's defensive crisis shows little sign of easing after captain Harry Maguire admitted he has still not returned to training following a calf injury.

The centre-back picked up the problem in the 1-0 defeat by Aston Villa last month, leading to him not being selected in the England squad having also been forced to miss United's games against Everton and Villarreal in the Premier League and Champions League respectively.

Since then the 28-year-old has been under rehabilitation at United's training ground in Carrington.

It's understood that Maguire did some light training at Carrington on Monday after missing the last two games, but did not take part in the main session.

Reflecting on his injury, Maguire revealed that while he was in the recovery phase, he was still not back training with team-mates.

'Yeah it's getting there,' Maguire told Manchester United's website.

'I still haven't trained yet with the squad, but I am getting better, I am progressing as I should be. It is obviously a frustrating injury for me to get, but I am progressing and I will be back on the pitch soon.'

Maguire's absence has been a big miss for United, with the defender having played a full 90 minutes in the first five games of the Premier League season which saw the Red Devils win four of them.

Centre-back partner Raphael Varane suffered a groin injury in France's Nations League final win on Sunday against Spain

But the timing of the injury is a significant blow for manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who is also without his other first choice centre-back Raphael Varane.

Manchester United tell fit-again Marcus Rashford to BULK up to limit his chance of further injury down the line ahead of his return against Leicester on Saturday

* Marcus Rashford will be available for the first time this season against Leicester
* The England forward underwent shoulder surgery following the summer's Euros
* Due to limited mobility in his left shoulder, he has lost upper body muscle mass
* Rashford had previously been hindered by a double back fracture last year

Manchester United want Marcus Rashford to put on muscle to limit the chance of further injury now the forward is ready to return.

Rashford will be available for the first time this season against Leicester City on Saturday, following shoulder surgery in August.

The 23-year-old added 4kg of muscle to his lower body as he worked his way back to full fitness. But due to limited mobility in his left shoulder, Rashford has lost muscle mass in his upper body.

United believe that if he bulks up, he will have a better chance of dealing with the physical demands of the Premier League and staying injury-free in the future.

Marcus Rashford is optimistic of being fit for Manchester United's crunch clash against Liverpool on Sunday following treatment on dead leg sustained in their comeback win over Atalanta

* The England striker, 23, had treatment at Carrington on Thursday morning
* He is optimistic of being cleared to face Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool side on Sunday

Marcus Rashford is hopeful of being fit to play for Manchester United in Sunday's clash with arch rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford.

Rashford went off during United's win over Atalanta in the Champions League on Wednesday night with what manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer described as a dead leg.

The England striker had treatment at Carrington on Thursday morning and it's understood he is optimistic of being cleared to face Jurgen Klopp's side.

Rashford has only just returned following shoulder surgery in the summer and scored on both appearances so far in last weekend's defeat at Leicester and against Atalanta as he began United's dramatic comeback in a 3-2 win over the Italians.

Marcus Rashford is hopeful of being fit to play for Manchester United against Liverpool. The England striker, 23, had treatment after going off during United's win over Atalanta. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be anxious to have him available given his record against the Reds

Solskjaer will be even more anxious to have Rashford available for Sunday considering the player's impressive record of five goals in his last eight games against Liverpool.

Speaking about the injury on Wednesday night, the United boss said: 'It's a dead leg. I hope he'll be okay for Sunday. I hope so and I think so. It can take longer than you want, but if we treat him well he should be okay.'

Rashford added 4kg of muscle on the lower half of his body during his rehabilitation, but was limited in the work he could do on the upper half because of the operation on his left shoulder.

United want him to bulk up to balance that out and also to protect his body against further injury in future.

Solskjaer added: 'He has worked really hard. His injury, or the surgery, meant he couldn't train with contact but he has been training physically and now he is physically very robust. Now it's about getting football form back, and it's coming.

'Marcus is a natural talent but he also wants to work on his game and he has already worked a lot individually without contact allowed. It showed (against Atalanta) because he was really composed and took his goal really well.'

OLE GIVES UPDATE ON VARANE RECOVERY

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says Raphael Varane is “working hard” to recover from a groin muscle injury sustained on international duty earlier this month.

The Frenchman played twice for his country at the start of October, helping them to win the UEFA Nations League, the 19th major title of his distinguished career.

Varane joined United from Real Madrid in the summer and had already made an impression in his seven appearances for the club.

The boss revealed to club media that Varane is back on grass and progressing well in his rehabilitation.

“He’s working hard,” Ole explained to MUTV’s Stewart Gardner.

“As I said, it’s hard to put a time limit on players that you don’t really know, but he’s been on the grass and who knows?”

It’s a positive update on our no. 19, who is a key member of the squad. Any prolonged absence would be a great shame, but it seems as if Varane is progressing well in his recovery.

With Liverpool coming up this weekend, United then face Tottenham Hotspur, Atalanta and Manchester City before the November international break.

Supporters will hope the defender could be back in action before club football pauses again.

Raphael Varane is back in training in a welcome boost to Manchester United ahead of must-win Spurs clash - as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is seen for the first time since Liverpool humiliation

* Raphael Varane returned to full Manchester United training on Wednesday
* His return comes just before United face Tottenham on Saturday afternoon
* He has been out of action after picking up an injury while away with France
* Varane was forced off the pitch after injuring his right quad against Spain
* The defender was photographed alongside Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at training

Raphael Varane returned to full training on Wednesday morning to give Manchester United a welcome boost ahead of Saturday's fixture with Tottenham.

The Red Devils will head into their Premier League encounter with Spurs looking to prove themselves after suffering a humiliating 5-0 defeat to Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday.

Varane was sidelined for United's game against Liverpool after he sustained a quad injury while away on international duty with France earlier this month.

Varane's injury took place in the first half of France's game with Spain earlier this month. The Manchester United defender winced as he lengthened his stride and cut out a low cross from Gavi five minutes before the interval.

It seemed innocuous but the United centre-half signalled towards the bench immediately as he sat on the floor asking for treatment.

The injury came as a substantial blow for Manchester United - considering they paid £40million to attain his services from Real Madrid over summer.

However, the Red Devils have been handed a timely boost ahead of their clash with Tottenham this weekend as Varane returned to full training.

The Frenchman was seen linking up with under-fire boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer with at the club's training ground.

Varane was also seen taking part in several drills. However, it has not yet been determined whether Varane will be fit enough to face Tottenham on Saturday - having missed United's two previous games against Liverpool and Leicester.

Marcus Rashford, Bruno Fernandes and Harry Maguire were also among those picture taking part in the session on Wednesday morning.

Meanwhile, Solskjaer - who was seen for the first time since the Liverpool humiliation - led the session.

The United manager was seen spurting instructions to help the Red Devils rediscover their best form before their showdown with Nuno Espirito Santo's men.

Solskjaer will be hopeful his wisdom rubbed off on the players as many believe Saturday's fixture at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium will the deciding factor as to whether he stays at the club.
