Irwin hails MLS facilities

United legend Denis Irwin has praised MLS facilities ahead of the Reds' pre-season tour in July.

The former Reds full-back visited Kansas, Philadelphia and Toronto to meet local supporters, check out training facilities and spread the Manchester United gospel.

Sir Alex's men will meet MLS sides Kansas City Wizards and Philadelphia Union as part of United's four-game North American tour, with the Reds playing Celtic in Toronto and an MLS All-Star XI in Houston.

Speaking in Philadelphia, Irwin said: "When United go on pre-season tour, we look for different things. One is the facilities – obviously they're second to none here. The second is the quality of the opposition. The MLS will be halfway through the season so Philadelphia Union will be very fit at the time."

And although the North American tour won't feature World Cup stars like Patrice Evra, Nani or Wayne Rooney, Denis assured local fans that there would still be plenty of talent on show.

"You've got the three wise men – Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes," he said. "Edwin van der Sar as well. Besides that, you’ve got a good mix of youngsters. Antonio Valencia's coming across, Jonny Evans, John O'Shea, Darren Fletcher. Federico Macheda and Danny Welbeck are two young lads, so you have a great mixture."

Fergie reveals names for US trip
-eatsleepsport.com-

Sir Alex Ferguson has confirmed that all his senior stars not at the World Cup will go on the pre-season tour to the USA and Mexico.

The United boss, rumoured to have been providing the USA with information on England players for Saturday's World Cup match, believes the tour will be perfect preparation for the new season as the Reds bid to regain the Premier League trophy.

He said: "We'll be taking all of our tour games very seriously because the stage we'll be at in terms of our pre-season preparation means we need to get our show on the road.

"The tempo and rhythm of our game has got to be established quickly and hopefully the American fans will see us at our best. We'll have some of our top experienced players with us in Scholes, Giggs, Neville and Van der Sar, while the likes of Fletcher and Berbatov will also be coming."

LA Galaxy Head Coach Bruce Arena to Lead MLS All-Stars Against Manchester United in 2010 AT&T MLS Al
June 30, 2010 - Major League Soccer (MLS)

NEW YORK (Wednesday, June 30, 2010) - Major League Soccer today announced that LA Galaxy head coach Bruce Arena will lead the MLS All-Stars against 2009 English Premier League champion Manchester United in the 2010 AT&T MLS All-Star Game due to the Galaxy's exceptional record in the first half of the MLS regular season. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN2 and TeleFutura from Reliant Stadium in Houston, Texas on Wednesday, July 28 at 8:30 p.m. ET.
The honor of coaching the MLS All-Stars goes to the coach whose team has the best points-per-game average in League play through June 27. With a record of 10-1-3, for 33 points (2.36 points-per-game), the LA Galaxy secured the MLS All-Star Coach position for Arena.

Arena is in his third season as head coach of the Galaxy. A two-time MLS Cup winning coach, Arena is one of just four coaches ever to win MLS Cup on more than one occasion. As the all-time leader in wins among coaches in U.S. National Team history, Arena led the U.S. to the FIFA World Cup twice, including a historic quarterfinal berth in 2002 in Japan/Korea.

Because the LA Galaxy are scheduled to host the Puerto Rico Islanders in a 2010-2011 CONCACAF Champions League match on Tuesday, July 27, Arena has asked host city head coach, Dominic Kinnear of the Houston Dynamo, to lead the All-Star training sessions on Monday, July 26 and Tuesday, July 27, as well as serve as his assistant coach on gameday.

Fans and media may continue to vote for the MLS All-Star First XI through July 6. One-fourth of the total vote for the First XI will come from each of the following groups: fans, players, coaches and general managers, and media members. The MLS All-Star First XI will be announced on Tuesday, July 13.

Arena and Kinnear will collaborate to select five additional All-Stars who will join the two Commissioner's selections to complete the 2010 AT&T MLS All-Star Game roster. The entire 18-man roster, including those five coaches' selections and two Commissioner's picks, will be announced on Monday, July 19.

Union team can test United

Ex-Portsmouth and Swindon Town midfielder Stefani Miglioranzi reveals all about two of United’s tour opponents, including his own Philadelphia Union...

Philadelphia Union are a new club. Tell us a bit about them…We were only formed at the start of the year and with any new team there are a lot of adjustments to be made. We had a rough start, mainly because our stadium wasn’t finished and we had to play a lot of games on the road. Out of the first 10 games of the season we played eight away from home, of which we only won one! That run isn’t really indicative of the quality that we have. We have players here that can change a game and the more we get used to each other, the better the results become.

Who should United look out for in the Union team?
We have a very cosmopolitan team consisting of a lot of foreign players who speak Spanish, it’s a lot of fun in our dressing room! Our forwards include Alejandro Moreno, a Venezualan international and a real workhorse, he's always creating havoc. Sebastien Le Toux is a French lad and a fans’ favourite - he's full of energy and he gets among the goals. In midfield with me, we have Fred, my fellow Brazilian who’s very exciting to watch. Then we have Roger Torres, an 18 year-old Colombian who’s tiny but very savvy and makes really difficult passes.

United also face the Kansas City Wizards - what can the Reds expect?
We played them a couple of weeks back [losing 0-2]. They play in a really small stadium in the league and it’s tough to play in, it’s very compact. They’ll play United in the Arrowhead Stadium, which is a lot bigger. They have some talented players, including experienced defender Jimmy Conrad. Their goalkeeper, Jimmy Neilson, is Danish and he made some very important saves against us. Up front they have the very vibrant and energetic Kei Karmara.

The USA team impressed at the World Cup. Is that a sign of the growing quality in Major League Soccer?
The standard of football here is getting better and better and we’re getting more and more big-name players coming this way. When European teams come over to America in pre-season, they’re finding that games here are tough. We don’t just want to play them and lose face, which shows how much better the game is here now. Players are getting savvier. Mistakes and naivety are more infrequent and the game is more professional. Landon [Donovan] definitely carries the flag for all American players. You probably saw last year, while he was at Everton, why he’s considered so highly here. He’s very diligent when it comes to trying to make himself a better player and he has tremendous talent.

Are you looking forward to playing against United on 21 July?
When I played in England I always hoped for a big draw in the FA Cup so that I could get a chance to play against teams like United. It’s funny the opportunity has presented itself after having moved back to the US!

Giggs, Scholes headline Manchester United roster on North American tour
-mlssoccer.com-

Stars van der Sar, Fletcher & Berbatov also in for Allstar Game

NEW YORK – Manchester United confirmed Thursday that superstars Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes and Gary Neville will be among the players included in their final travel roster for this month’s North American tour.

Edwin van der Sar, Darren Fletcher and Dimitar Berbatov were also confirmed through an official announcement Thursday from the Red Devils, who will open their four-date tour on July 16 against Scottish side Celtic FC at the Rogers Centre in Toronto.

“Winning is part of what we have to do here, but the main object is to get everyone game time, come back ready, fit to start the season,” Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson said.

The English Premier League runners-up will take on the Philadelphia Union at Lincoln Financial Field on July 21, followed by a match against the Kansas City Wizards at Arrowhead Stadium on July 25.

The tour wraps up with a marquee matchup against the MLS All-Stars in the 2010 AT&T MLS All-Star game at Reliant Stadium in Houston on July 28.

“American soccer is starting to make an impact and it’s so improved,” Ferguson said. “I made that point about the United States team before the World Cup. I said they were going to play like real athletes – the guys are fit, committed, they believe in themselves. I think American football is that way – they’re all fit, athletic, they’ve got [a good feel for] the pitch. You can see that there’s improvement in MLS. I’ve spoken to many people in the last few months about that and there’s a big upsurge."

United captain Neville, a two-time World Cup veteran for England, said he's looking forward to the competition in all three games on the tour.

“It’s always a tough game between us and Celtic," Neville said. "Then you’ve got the other two games against local teams, [who will] be fighting to play the biggest games in their lives against Man United. They’re all really competitive games for different reasons, which should be good for us to get fit, competitive football before the start of the season.”
