Default Re: Man United U-21 Matches 2016/17

Mulai sekarang ganti ke Premier League 2, menggantikan kompetisi sebelumnya yang dikenal sebagai U-21 Premier League.

Premier League 2 : Competition format explained

Premier League 2 is a new competition that replaces the Under-21 Premier League from 2016/17, with a greater focus on a level of play in terms of technicality, physicality and intensity to bring players as close to first-team experience as possible.

The age limit for players has risen from Under-21 to Under-23.

The league will take on the same format of two tiers, Division 1 and Division 2, with 12 teams in each, and the factor of promotion and relegation.

The 24 clubs who compete each applied for 'Category One' status in the Elite Player Performance Plan (EPPP). There are 15 clubs from the Premier League and nine clubs from the Championship.

All players born after 1 January 1993 for the 2016/17 season are eligible to play, and the format stays as follows:
  • There are 12 teams in Division 1 and 12 in Division 2, with every club playing each other once at home and once away
  • In Division 1, the team who finish first are champions
  • The bottom two teams in Division 1 get relegated to Division 2
  • In Division 2, the league winners get automatic promotion to Division 1
  • Teams ranked second, third, fourth and fifth go into a promotion play-off
  • Second plays fifth place at home and third hosts fourth in the semi-finals, both at the club’s main stadium, while the final takes place at the home ground of the team who finished highest in the league
  • All play-off matches are one-off ties, decided by extra-time and then penalties if the match is level after 120 minutes
  • There is no relegation from Division 2

Other rules include :
  • Each team can field a goalkeeper over the age limit and up to three ‘over-age’ outfield players in every match
  • Each club must host at least three league matches at their main stadium during the course of the season, which helps to enhance the matchday experience for the players and fans.
  • Member clubs' training grounds or Academy venues will be permitted for the staging of up to three home matches over the course of the league season.

Manchester United go into the 2016/17 campaign as champions in three of the U21 Premier League’s four seasons.

Man Utd were crowned champions in the competition's first season, when it replaced the Premier Reserve League in 2012/13, beating Tottenham Hotspur 3-2 in the final at Old Trafford.

Chelsea sealed the 2013/14 title with a 2-1 final victory over Man Utd at the same venue, before the Red Devils reclaimed the crown in 2014/15 and won it again in 2015/16.

SALFORD CITY 1 UNITED RESERVES 5

Pre-season friendly | 26 July 2016 | Moor Lane | Scorers: Allen 21pen | Wilson 3, Harrop 64 77, Kehinde 80, Mitchell 83

Manchester United's Reserves went on a second-half goal spree to claim a comfortable 5-1 victory against Salford City at Moor Lane on Tuesday evening.

There was very little to choose between the teams at the break, with both having found the net once, but it was a completely different story by the time the referee blew the final whistle.

Salford City are the club that gained almost cult status after United’s class of ’92, in the personage of Gary Neville, Paul Scholes, Nicky Butt, Phil Neville and Ryan Giggs caused a stir when they started backing the now Conference North club.

The club’s television coverage in last season’s FA Cup also captured the nation’s imagination on the back of the fascinating documentary that highlighted the involvement and commitment of United’s former stars.

It is more than a year since Warren Joyce last brought his side here and played out a 3-3 draw in front of Moor Lane’s enthusiastic locals. And there was an even better turn-out this time around for the Reds’ visit to the tiny enclosure that is located not far from United’s legendary Cliff training ground on Lower Broughton Road.

Salfordians are fiercely proud of their city, and the Ammies, (Salford City’s nickname), and they leave visitors in no doubt when singing the club’s anthem, ‘Dirty Old Town’, which is a rather less than flattering little ditty about Greater Manchester’s other city.

United made just one change, Matty Willock in for Tosin Kehinde, to the side which started the game at Altrincham four days earlier. It took United 33 minutes to find the net against Altrincham but, in this pre-season friendly, they improved on that with half an hour to spare.

Willock provided the assist and striker James Wilson made no mistake with a confident finish past keeper Jay Lynch. Salford didn’t allow the early goal to unsettle them and, soon after, James Poole went close to finding the leveller.

The same player was brought down by Dean Henderson, in the 21st minute, and Richie Allen stepped forward to place his spot-kick wide of the United keeper.

United upped the pace after the equaliser and were inches from regaining the lead when both Sean Goss and Scott McTominay both struck the frame of Lynch’s goal. McTominay later had his name taken just before the break as punishment for an over-zealous challenge on Craig King.

Wilson appeared to have restored United’s lead with a cracking drive, five minutes after restart, but Lynch did well to push the ball away to safety. Moments later, Henderson was thrust into action to stop Matthew Warburton’s shot from finding the net.

Josh Harrop replaced Willock on the hour and, within four minutes, had lashed home a blistering shot to put United back in front. Five minutes later, United almost stretched their lead when Harrop’s shot thumped against crossbar.

Harrop had certainly caught the eye since taking the field and, in the 77th minute, he grabbed his second goal of the night with an audacious chip over Lynch’s outstretched arms to give United a two-goal advantage.

Kehinde added a fourth goal for United in the 80th minute and Demetri Mitchell, within seconds of taking the field as a substitute, banged home the fifth.

United: Henderson; Riley (Olosunde 82), Love, Poole, Blackett; El Fitouri, Willock (Harrop 60), Weir (Mitchell 82); McTominay (Redmond 46); Wilson (Kehinde 75) Subs not used: O’Hara, Scott, Doughty, Dearnley, Gribbin.

Manchester United have been drawn in Group B of the Premier League International Cup.

Warren Joyce's side will compete against Middlesbrough, Sparta Prague and holders Villarreal with all three games to be played in England. Exact fixture dates and venues are still to be confirmed.

Manchester United Under 23s 1-1 Oldham (3-4 on pens): Red Devils miss out on Lancashire Senior Cup final clash with Everton after shootout

* Manchester United youngsters crashed out to Oldham in Lancashire Senior Cup semi-final
* Matthew Olosunde converted Regan Poole's cross to give United the lead
* Jake Cassidy headed in the equaliser to send the game to penalties
* Scott McTominay and Demi Mitchell missed spot kicks for United

Manchester United youngsters crashed out of the Lancashire Senior Cup semi-finals following a penalty shootout defeat by Oldham at Leigh Sports Village.

Matthew Olosunde opened the scoring for the Premier League club in the first-half before Jake Cassidy equalised after the interval to send the game to penalties.

Scott McTominay and Demi Mitchell missed their spot kicks to send Oldham through to a final showdown with Everton.

The Latics fielded a relatively experienced side and came close to taking the lead through Darius Osei, Carl Winchester and Marc Klok in the first-half.

Winchester was also unfortunate not to earn a penalty on 28minutes after being felled by Sadiq El Fitouri in the area.

United took the lead against the run of play when Olosunde, who usually plays in defence, met Regan Poole's inviting cross to score a close-range volley for his first goal for the club.

The visitors equalised after the interval when Cassidy headed Osei's deep cross into the corner, which eventually forced a penalty shootout after United missed several chances to regain the lead.

MATCH FACTS

Manchester United: Henderson, Riley, Tuanzebe, Poole, El Fitouri, Goss, Olosunde (Mitchell 80), Redmond, McTominay, Willock (Gribbin 85’), Weir (Kehinde 46’).

Subs not used: O’Hara, Warren.

Oldham Athletic: Kettings, Mantack, Brown, Edmundson, Stott (King 75’), Trialist, Woodland, Klok (Trialist 46’), Woodland, Cassidy, Osei (Glackin 66’).

Subs not used: O’Neill, Scullion, Knight.
Oldham keeper Chris Kettings saved McTominay's opening spot-kick only for Cassidy to slip and miss the chance to give his side an early advantage.

However, Mitchell's cheeky attempt backfired after his shot cleared the crossbar - leaving Kallum Mantack to become Oldham's hero by scoring the winning penalty to set up a date with Everton on Wednesday.

15/08/2016 - ManUtd.com, Adam Marshall
PREMIER LEAGUE 2:
UNITED 1 LEICESTER 0

Manchester United's Reserves struck late on to earn three welcome points in the Premier League 2 opener against Leicester City at Leigh Sports Village.

Demi Mitchell, whose penalty miss in the
last outing against Oldham Athletic in the
Lancashire Senior Cup semi-final proved
costly, was the hero as he came off the
bench to race onto Sam Johnstone's long
kick and produce a brilliant lob over Daniel
Iversen in the 87th minute.

The Foxes, fielding an experienced line-up, were the more dangerous side for long
periods and created three good chances
within the first eight minutes. Gokhan Inler
drifted a fierce drive wide, ex-Red Matty
James fired off target and Admiral Muskwe
forced a fine save out of Johnstone, who
turned the ball behind at his near post.

After Elliott Moore headed off target for the
visitors, United's best moment of the
opening 45 minutes came when Tosin
Kehinde knocked the ball back to Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and the fit-again defender unleashed a powerful effort that was well held by Iversen.

Skipper James Weir had the ball in the net
but only after Borthwick-Jackson was
harshly adjudged offside but Leicester
controlled the remainder of the half. Regan Poole blocked shots by Poland
international Bartosz Kapustka and
Muskwe when the Foxes looked to profit
from finding space in the area.

More former Reds came close as Tom
Lawrence wriggled free to bend one wide
and Ritchie De Laet missed a headed
opportunity before lashing a rising drive
over Johnstone's bar.

Warren Joyce's men were brighter after the
interval with Matty Willock's shot fielded
by Iversen following a purposeful run by
Josh Harrop. The immaculate Axel
Tuanzebe had to be alert at the other end
to block a Kaputska attempt when
Johnstone parried Liam Moore's volley
while the Reds keeper did superbly to
ensure Poole did not put through his own
net from a Lawrence centre.

Demi Mitchell came on to add more
attacking verve to United's line-up but
Leicester continued to press with Inler
wildly shooting wide twice and Kairo
Mitchell forcing the pick of Johnstone's
saves with a low drive. Johnstone thwarted Kairo Mitchell again moments later after the forward turned Poole on the edge of the area.

As as is often the case, United dug deep
and, when De Laet shot tamely into
Johnstone's arms, the impressive keeper
launched the ball downfield in Demi
Mitchell's direction. The substitute showed his pace to run through and his finish over the stranded Iversen was right out of the top drawer.

It was enough to take the points for the
Reserves, whose team spirit continues to
deserve the utmost praise. Southampton
are the next opponents, in a week's time,
at St Mary's Stadium.

United: Johnstone; Riley, Poole, Tuanzebe,
Borthwick-Jackson; Redmond, Willock;
Olosunde (Mitchell 69), Harrop, Kehinde;
Weir. Subs not used: Henderson, Scott,
Whelan, Tanner.

22/08/2016 20:45, Adam Marshall
PREMIER LEAGUE 2:
SOUTHAMPTON 2 UNITED 0

Premier League 2 | 22 August 2016 | St
Mary's | Scorers: Sims 56, Stephens 62

Goals within six second-half minutes by
Josh Sims and Jack Stephens earned
Southampton a 2-0 victory over Manchester

United in the Reds' opening away game of
the new Premier League 2 season.
On a sunny evening on the South Coast,
the hosts were quick out of the blocks and
attacked with real intent in the opening
minutes. Danger man Olufela Olomola had
a shot pushed away by Dean Henderson at his near post after Joe Riley's stray pass conceded possession but United
weathered the early storm.

Indeed, with only seven minutes on the
clock, a brilliant move involving a dynamic
run and pass by Scott McTominay was
crying out for a finish from James Weir but
the skipper could only scoop over an
inviting target.

McTominay, playing in midfield rather than the lone striker's role he occupied in the Lancashire Senior Cup tie with Oldham
Athletic, fired a Riley pass off target before
the Saints enjoyed a period of pressure.

Jake Hesketh forced a top-class fingertip
save out of Henderson, in for Sam
Johnstone after the 23-year-old suffered a
knock while earning the Man-of-the-Match award in last week's opening win over Leicester City.

Thomas O'Connor blasted wide before
another glorious chance fell to Weir at the
other end. With two minutes of the half
remaining, Harry Lewis mishandled a Josh
Harrop corner under pressure from
McTominay. There was no whistle and Weir skewed the loose ball the wrong side of the keeper's right-hand post with the goal gaping.

Weir moved wide in the second half with
Harrop deployed down the middle and the
captain teed Matty Willock up for a
wayward shot. Axel Tuanzebe made a
goal-saving block to deny Olomola but the centre-back's header from a Sam McQueen cross soon afterwards only found Sims and his drive deflected off Riley and past Henderson for the opener.

United responded with a Harrop shot from
distance that forced a diving save out of
Lewis, with nobody on hand for a simple
rebound, but a killer second goal for the
home side arrived on 62 minutes. Harrison
Reed's corner allowed Stephens, up from
the back, to head home unchecked.

Olomola was guilty of a bad miss from a
Tyreke Johnson cross and the striker was
thwarted by Henderson when the keeper
gathered at the second attempt following a shot by Sims. A rare sight of goal for the
Reds ended in frustration when Reed
cleared off the line after Devonte Redmond flicked a Harrop corner towards the net.

The Saints saw the remainder of the game
out comfortably, although Willock had a
tame late header, and United need to
bounce back against a strong Chelsea side on Sunday.

United: Henderson; El Fitouri (Mitchell 63),
Tuanzebe, Poole, Riley; McTominay,
Redmond; Kehinde, Willock, Harrop; Weir.
Subs not used: O'Hara, Sang, Scott, Whelan.
