Banned Jose Mourinho stayed out of sight as Manchester United swept into the League Cup semi-finals with a comfortable 4-1 win over West Ham.

Anthony Martial secured victory with two goals early in the second half after former United player Anthony Fletcher had cancelled out Zlatan Ibrahimovic's early opener.

Ibrahimovic added gloss to the scoreline with his second of the night in injury time. Here Sportsmail's Jack Gaughan picks out five key factors from the win at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.


The Armenian provided the pace and incision which has been missing this season

Henrikh Mkhitaryan can’t help himself, can he? Another two assists here - the first was a thing of real beauty, backheeling to Zlatan Ibrahimovic - and Mourinho simply cannot leave him out any longer.

He must start at Everton on Sunday, purely because United find an extra gear with the Armenian around. Barely wastes a pass, takes up space in which he is unmarkable and has incisive vision.

Most of all though, he looks like a United player. Breaking at pace, full of direct running. That has been missing at Old Trafford.

Is it back? Well, not quite, but two goals - his third and fourth of the season - will do Anthony Martial absolutely no harm. Both striker’s goals too - right place, right time coming in from his line.

It will please Jose Mourinho, who had warned the Frenchman that he was running out of chances to impress. Much more purpose about Martial as well, who was willing to drive at his man and also held the ball up well with back to goal.

A certain vigour to his play and reminiscent of the youngster’s form last season rather than this.

Ashley Fletcher left in the summer as he searched for first-team football and the script was written for him to score his first West Ham goal at Old Trafford. No muted celebration in front of the Stretford End either.

The striker left United as circumstances - a loan away and Marcus Rashford’s form - conspired against him. It should not be forgotten that he was ahead of Rashford in the pecking order at the beginning of last season.

And the 21-year-old is showing he could prove an asset to Slaven Bilic in Diafra Sakho and Andy Carroll’s absence. Sakho was earlier ruled out for six weeks with a thigh problem.

Luke Shaw had a difficult 45 minutes before being hauled off at the break. He did not track his man for West Ham’s equaliser and generally looked a touch off the pace.

No great surprise there, given the left back has not enjoyed a run of games. You wonder what Shaw is thinking - providing he did not pick up an injury. The United management will be asked about that post-match.

Ten changes between these two on Wednesday night might suggest neither were taking this overly seriously, but three of those were enforced and the respective XIs very strong.

Bilic will wonder, however, whether again going for five at the back was a mistake given United’s occasional vulnerability at the back.

West Ham were penned in early and might have caved on another night, or against opposition who could consistently pick the correct final ball.
