LOCAL MP IMPRESSED BY OLD TRAFFORD FACILITIES

Local politician Kate Green, MP for Stretford and Urmston, joined the Manchester United Disabled Supporters’ Association (MUDSA) and United staff at Old Trafford in viewing the new accessibility facilities at Old Trafford
.

Hosted by MUDSA, the celebratory event was held last week in the new purpose-built platform at the back of the Stretford End.

Speaking to MUTV, Kate Green hailed the new development and praised MUDSA’s efforts and the club’s investment, saying: “It is a fantastic facility and I'm really excited to be here and to see what's been created here because I know it's been a long-standing dream for the club and especially for the disabled supporters’ association.

"I'm just blown away by it, it's so spacious," she continued.

"It's so elegant and stylish. It has got an amazing view of the ground. It's just stunning to look out there and you can see the whole pitch really clearly in front of you, and it's got a really warm welcoming vibe as well.

"As soon as I came in, I thought, ‘This is great, this is a really nice place for people to come’.

"It is really inclusive and it's great that disabled fans can sit anywhere in the stadium. If they want to come here, it's great here in the Stretford End - they're really welcoming - but other parts of the stadium are welcoming to disabled supporters too."

Green summed up her feelings of pride in MUDSA, who played an integral role in the redesign and construction of the new accessibility facilities by offering advice and guidance throughout the project.

"I'm always really proud to be the MP for Manchester United but I've got to say today I'm especially proud to be the MP for MUDSA, the disabled supporters’ association," she said.

Fans who wish to access the new facilities should become an official member and get in touch with the Ticket Office by emailing accessibility@manutd.co.uk. They will register you and guide you through the ticket application process. More information can also be found at www.manutd.com/accessibility.

OLD TRAFFORD HEALTHY EATING LESSONS FOR KIDS

Manchester United Foundation invited a group of excited schoolchildren to Old Trafford to experience a healthy eating session like no other.

The class of Year 6 children from St Philip’s CE Primary School, Hulme, took part in an interactive healthy eating workshop with the club’s award-winning Chef Tagg and his team.
Chef Tagg, executive head chef at Manchester United, began the session engaging the children about the club’s catering team, matchday operations and the dietary requirements of first team and women’s team players.

The students were then tasked with making their own healthy wraps for lunch, with nutritious, alternative ingredients; many of which were completely new to them.

Head Chef Darren Hamilton led the activity and enjoyed giving an insight into the club’s catering team: “The event has gone really well; all the kids have been involved and tried things they haven’t tried before. The children were really inquisitive and keen to learn about what the likes of Marcus Rashford and Cristiano Ronaldo eat before games.
“For example, they were keen to learn about the set menus that we offer to each team put together by the chefs and nutritionists.

“At the training ground, we use a buffet-style service, so the player has a choice and we often make special requests for players, too. For our new signings, we will learn about their preferred food choices from their native country and often adapt our menus to their specific diets.

“For away days, we tend to make things like a chicken salad to boost carb intake. Ronaldo tends to lean towards a chicken salad.”

One of the students said: "It's really interesting to learn that before games the players eat really healthy, but, afterwards, they need more carbohydrates to help them recover."

Darren concluded: “It’s so important that we teach children at a young age about healthy eating as these skills will take them right through to adulthood. It’s really important for us to be helping with this.”

St Philip’s CE Primary School is partnered with Manchester United Foundation through its Primary Reds programme. Dedicated coaches deliver healthy eating and physical literacy courses in association with the national Premier League Primary Stars initiative.

Manchester United's options to revamp Old Trafford include the dramatic step of DEMOLISHING their famous but faded 112-year-old stadium and playing elsewhere while they build a new, world-class arena on the same site

* Manchester United could choose to knock Old Trafford down as they work out how to revamp their stadium
* There are three options being considered by the club, with demolishing it being the most controversial
* In recent years, United have seen other clubs overtake them in terms of how modern the facilities are

A plan to knock down Old Trafford and rebuild it from scratch is one drastic option on the table as Manchester United consider how best to make their iconic but faded stadium fit for modern purpose.

Completely reconstructing English football's most famous club stadium – the home of the Busby Babes and Sir Alex Ferguson's 1999 treble winners – from the ground up would be an extraordinary and controversial way to solve the range of problems currently afflicting United.

But Sportsmail understands that the proposal is one of three currently being considered by the club.

United are blessed with acres of land on their current site in Stretford on which to construct a stadium to rival any in the world of sport if they chose to do so.

Manchester United could decide to knock Old Trafford down and rebuild the stadium as they consider options to modernise. The club's South Stand, which backs onto a railway line, could be knocked down and revamped as part of another option

One of two other two ideas being considered is to rebuild and extend Old Trafford's ageing and problematic South Stand up and over the railway line that runs behind it.

The second is to leave the stadium structurally intact but conduct a comprehensive revamp of spectator and corporate areas on all four sides.

Currently, it is thought that the South Stand revamp appeals most to the club's owners the Glazer family and as such it is the more likely option. It would also be the most acceptable to fans.

Current building technology would enable the railway line to be navigated, an issue that was considered prohibitive for many years, on the way to increasing capacity from the stadium's current 74,000 to beyond 80,000.

United have said they would prefer a phased rebuild of Old Trafford and they would in all likelihood be able to carry out this work without impacting capacity while doing so.

However the option to demolish the 112-year stadium is understood to be real and is part of the proposals that competing architects and engineers have been examining as they bid for the contract to carry out the work.

Completely reconstructing English football's most famous club stadium would be an extraordinary move by United. Old Trafford is 112 years old and one of football's most recognisable stadiums

Perhaps the biggest obstacle to United eventually playing in a totally brand new stadium is that the team would have to find somewhere else to play for two years while it was built. When Arsenal and Tottenham awaited work on their new stadia to be completed, they played home games at Wembley.

This would not be an option for United and there is no club outside the Premier League in the north-west that has a big enough stadium to offer a ground share. Sharing with neighbours Manchester City, meanwhile, would never happen.

Old Trafford remains one of the most famous stadium in world sport and has played host to World Cup and European Championship games as well as a Champions League final. But despite several attempts at modernisation over the years, it now falls some way below standards required by a top English club.

Facilities at places like Tottenham and Arsenal are currently far superior.

In recent years, other stadiums in England have overtaken United's - much to the dismay of the club's avid fanbase. One issue for United if they were to knock Old Trafford down would be that they would have to find somewhere else to play

United have promised to consult supporters throughout the process and chief operating officer Collette Roche told a fans' forum in December that several options were being considered.

Roche said: 'These meetings have produced exciting potential ideas, although it's important to note that we're still at an early stage and it's premature to talk about timetables'.

An announcement about the appointment of an architect is expected soon with news of confirmed plans to follow later.

How much!? Man United are warned that plans to demolish and rebuild Old Trafford could cost up to £1.5BILLION, which would see it leapfrog Tottenham's to make it the most expensive stadium in the country

* Manchester United's plans to rebuild Old Trafford could cost up to £1.5billion
* Drastic plans to build new stadium would make it most expensive in England
* A complete rebuild is one of three options under consideration by United
* Alternatively, there could be a major revamp of the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand
* Final option is to improve the spectator and corporate areas of the ground

Manchester United have been warned a plan to demolish and rebuild Old Trafford will cost up to £1.5billion.

United officials have been advised that drastic plans to build a state-of-the-art stadium on land adjacent to Old Trafford would make it the most expensive ever built in the country.

The cost of a new 80,000-capacity stadium is expected to exceed Tottenham's £1.1billion state-of-the-art home, according to external consultants.

Manchester United have been told that rebuilding Old Trafford could end up costing £1.5billion. An alternative option for United is a £400m revamp of the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand. Gary Neville believes that the club should build a brand new state of the art stadium

Prices of steel and essential materials have increased sharply since Tottenham completed their ground, while the conflict in the Ukraine is creating uncertainties and price hikes for major construction projects.

It is understood United may cover building costs through loans and the issue of bonds.

A complete rebuild is one of three options on the table for United, as officials consider how best to make their iconic but faded stadium fit for modern purpose.

The second option is a £400million expansion of the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand up and over the railway line that runs behind it, an option that would take the capacity of the historic stadium beyond 80,000.

The final option is to leave the stadium structurally intact but conduct a comprehensive revamp of spectator and corporate areas on all four sides of the ground.

Club officials have been presented costings for the projects, but have yet to sign off on a proposal.

The club is locked in talks with several planners bidding to oversee the work and are keeping their options open.

It is thought that the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand revamp currently appeals most to the club's owners the Glazer family and as such it is the more likely option. It would also be the most acceptable to fans.

It is understood that fans will be consulted before any plans are signed off.

Despite several attempts at modernisation over the years, club officials accept Old Trafford in its current form falls some way below standards required by a top English club. Facilities at places like Liverpool, Manchester City, Tottenham and Arsenal are currently far superior.

Former Manchester United right-back Gary Neville believes the club would be better building a brand new state of the art stadium opposed to undertaking work on Old Trafford.

Speaking on his Instagram page this week, Neville said: 'I think by the time that they have spent money on Old Trafford, the existing one, then I think you would be better off building a brand new, better, super stadium.

'I do think that Manchester United should always be at the forefront of stadiums, have the best facilities and they have fallen behind.'

Manchester United's plans to revamp Old Trafford are likely to focus on extending the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand by an extra 15,000 seats to take capacity up to 88,000 - with proposed building costs set to exceed £200MILLION

* Man United using master planners who designed Tottenham Hotspur Stadium
* Extension of Sir Bobby Charlton Stand would take capacity to around 88,000

Manchester United announced last week that they would be using the same master planners who designed the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to oversee the Old Trafford revamp.

Early indications are that about 15,000 more seats — along with a long overdue upgrade of the club’s corporate facilities — are the most likely outcomes.

An extension of the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand is on the cards, which would take capacity to around 88,000. That would leave Old Trafford’s capacity as second only to Wembley among UK stadiums.

Extension of Sir Bobby Charlton Stand would take capacity to around 88,000 at Old Trafford. The club's debt which was £495m will not prevent them from borrowing more money

United have around 100,000 supporters on the waiting list for season tickets and want to ensure that there is enough demand for the expanded stadium to be full on a regular basis.

The work is likely to cost more than £200million. It is understood that the club’s existing debt, which was £495m at the end of 2021, will not prevent them from borrowing more money.

That figure remains on the books following the Glazer family’s leveraged takeover in 2005.

OLD TRAFFORD HOSTS FUNDRAISING SLEEPOUT

Manchester United has tonight hosted the very first stadium sleepout in the iconic Munich Tunnel at Old Trafford in support of those facing hardship this winter.

Sixty supporters swapped their beds for a sleeping bag, uniting to raise vital funds and awareness for young people experiencing poverty and difficulty during the winter months.

Funds raised from the event will be split between Manchester United Foundation and Centrepoint, a charity that supports homeless young people, as both organisations look to help those who are living in crisis.

Fans braved the freezing December temperatures to gain an insight into the issues surrounding homelessness, and the challenges facing young people in poverty.

On behalf of the beneficiaries, John Shiels MBE, chief executive officer of Manchester United Foundation, and Julie Milnes, director of fundraising at Centrepoint, addressed supporters about current societal issues and the collaborative work being done by both organisations to improve the circumstances of young people.

“This club was built on the success of youth, and whether that's on or off the pitch, there's no better way to honour that legacy than here, sleeping out in the iconic Munich Tunnel. This winter will be incredibly difficult for many young people across the UK, and I am truly grateful to everyone that is here with us tonight braving the freezing temperatures. Their dedication means we can continue our work in supporting the most vulnerable in society and helping them to make positive choices in their lives.”

Julie reiterated John’s sentiment adding: “We are incredibly grateful to the Foundation for choosing to support Centrepoint at today’s sleepout, and for everyone who has swapped their beds for sleeping bags on this very cold evening so that fewer young people have to.

“These challenging and uncertain economic times are pushing many people to breaking point – especially vulnerable young people who continue to be dealt a bad hand. Money raised from today’s sleepout will go a long way towards helping them turn their lives around, and in supporting our wider mission of ending homelessness for good.”

Coronation Street actor and supporter of the Foundation, Antony Cotton is also swapping his bed for the night. "I’m thrilled that Centrepoint have linked up with the Foundation with the idea of ending youth homelessness because they’re two groups of people that I love and respect. It’s a really nice partnership and people will get to find out more about both organisations.”

During the evening, participants were given the opportunity to listen to real-life calls made to Centrepoint’s Helpline, as well as writing a message to a young person experiencing homelessness.

United fan Liv said: "Having the chance to experience and see what homeless people, and particularly young people, have to go through every night - not just one night - I figured that one night would be worth a go.

"People couldn’t believe I was doing it on my own, but bar the coldness, that’s something else that those young people have to go through – you don’t know who it is that you’re going to be sleeping next to in the evening, which was a big thing for me as well."

Fellow Reds supporter Gavin said: "I’m a massive Manchester United fan. It’s about awareness, breaking stigmas – particularly with homelessness – and at this time of year at Christmas and in the cold weather. Until you’ve experienced it [sleeping rough], I don’t think you’ll ever know how it feels.

"It’s that education element where you have to walk in the shoes of a homeless person to realise it, and if you do that, you will gain a better understanding and perceptions will change."

Alongside fans, Manchester United executives and staff members also bedded down in the Munich Tunnel to help raise awareness of youth poverty and homelessness, while supporting the two charities. Moreover, club partners also kindly donated both time and items to the event.

Contributing partners include:
  • DXC Technology - Presenting Partner of Manchester United Foundation - brought 16 of their staff members to the event to help raise awareness.
  • Chivas – Official Spirits Partner of Manchester United – will provide a well-deserved breakfast for participants the following morning.
  • Sportsbreaks.com – Official Supporter Travel Supplier of Manchester United – had five staff members attend and provided all supporters with a thermal mug and hat to keep them warm throughout the night.

Man United to REMOVE 850 £3,000-per-season executive seats from the Stretford End - and replace them with general admission tickets following long campaign from fans

* United fan groups worked with the club to resolve the longstanding issue
* The change is set to come into effect from the start of the 2024-2025 season
* The International Suite has been part of the Stretford End for more than 20 years

Manchester United are set to remove around 850 executive seats from the heart of the Stretford End as part of an ongoing bid to improve the atmosphere at Old Trafford.

United fans had criticised the club for installing hospitality tickets in what is supposed to be the most vocal part of the stadium and campaigned for them to be moved elsewhere for 25 years.

The club have confirmed the padded seats in the affected block, which cost around £3,000 a season, will revert to general admission tickets from the 2024-2025 campaign following discussions with supporters and its Fan Advisory Board.

The International Suite - which does not include complimentary matchday wining and dining - had been placed in the first tier of the Stretford End back in the early 1990s.

The Stretford End is the most famous area at Old Trafford and houses some of the club's most vocal supporters. The affected block (circled) will be reverted to general admission from the 2024-25 season

Supporters had long called for the seats to go back to general admission and the topic was a key part of an open letter the Manchester United Supporters' Trust wrote to the club back in 2018.

Fans had decried how United were one of the only clubs to install executive seats in the loudest area of their stadium.

The seats, which cost around £3,000 a year, allow access to the International Suite at Old Trafford

The decision to remove the executive seats comes amid a concerted effort from the club to give fans a greater say in decision-making on issues relating to match-going supporters.

United recently polled season ticket holders on how returned tickets for away matches should be distributed and also introduced a 'singing section' in the Stretford End, organised and run by a group called The Red Army (TRA), to improve the atmosphere at Old Trafford.

'Fans and fan groups including MUST and TRA have long campaigned for us to remove the executive seats from the heart of the Stretford End and to make them standard tickets and therefore more accessible to all fans,' said United's head of fan engagement Rick McGagh.

'We have listened and agree that as many fans as possible should have the chance to be a 'Stretford Ender'. We have worked with our Fans' Advisory Board in recent months to make this happen and we are all looking forward to an even louder Stretford End from August 2024.'
