Manchester United club badge adds £50 to cost of 'official outdoor apparel' jacket in proof of their commercial power

* Manchester United negotiated a new £750m deal with adidas in 2014
* The deal allowed United to reclaim a host of commercial rights
* Since then United have agreed a range of commercial deals worldwide
* Columbia Sportswear are United's ‘Official Outdoor Apparel Partner’
* Their deal allows them to use the United badge on their products

If you wondered why dozens of companies are paying Manchester United to become official partners here could be your answer.

In January, Columbia Sportswear became the club’s first ‘Official Outdoor Apparel Partner’ following the likes of Abengoa (Official Sustainable Technology Partner), Nissin (Official Global Noodle Partner) and HCL (Official Digital Transformation Partner).

The deal, which was signed for an undisclosed fee, allows the American manufacturer to plant the United badge on their products.

Columbia's HeatZone 1000 TurboDown jacket costs £50 more with the United badge added

The Men’s Heatzone 1000 TurboDown jacket, without the United badge, retails on the Columbia website for £350.

But the same jacket, with the addition of the famous crest, retails on the same website for £400.

Following the expiration of their kit deal with previous sponsors Nike, United negotiated a world record £750m deal with adidas and took back a host of rights for the club, which allowed such a deal with the likes of Columbia to take place.

The agreement, which saw control of the Old Trafford Megastore return to United, was seen as something of a coup for the club.

It has allowed Jose Mourinho’s United, who face Pep Guardiola’s derby rivals City on Saturday, to also sign deals with Heroes (Official Formal Footwear Partner) and New Era (Official Leisure Headwear Partner) while the club have also released a range of ‘lifestyle shoes’ featuring the famous crest.

When asked for an explanation, the American company said that the United badge added value to the product.

A spokesman explained: ‘In determining prices for any licensed product collection, Columbia takes several factors into account including additional costs for club royalty, embellishment, and colour customisation.

'Columbia believes the association with Manchester United adds value to the product and we’re confident all fans will be pleased with the performance and innovation of the Manchester United range.’

Apollo Tyres 'goes the distance' with United

  • Regional agreement now expanded to global partnership

Manchester United's partnership with Apollo Tyres, which has gradually increased its territorial rights, is now to be a global agreement.

The partnership is entering a second three-year term and this time Apollo Tyres will be the Official Tyre Partner of Manchester United worldwide.

The Club initially confirmed Apollo Tyres in August 2013 as a partner in the UK and India. Since then the partnership has been extended to more than 100 countries across Asia, the Middle East and Africa.

A highlight of the partnership so far has been the ‘Go the Distance’ Scholarship Programme, which included a football camp in India supported by Manchester United Soccer Schools.

Recognising however the importance of a physical legacy, Apollo Tyres has also developed two ‘Go the Distance’ football pitches; the first outside Old Trafford, under the watchful eye of Sir Alex Ferguson’s statue, and the second in Powai, Mumbai. Each pitch is made of recycled tyre rubber and provides a sustainable contribution to the local community, bringing football to children.

Another achievement has been the special-edition dual-branded tyre in India, the Middle East, South East Asia and the United Kingdom. Loyalty schemes built around the partnership have also helped Apollo’s expansion.

The partnership has contributed to Apollo campaigns such as ‘Apollo Challenges’ and ‘No Shortcuts’, which was complemented by a multi-channel advertising campaign as well as digital engagement with consumers.

Manchester United’s Group Managing Director, Richard Arnold, comments:

“Over the past three years, we’ve been impressed with how Apollo has taken opportunities after partnering with us. The company has supported our international events, especially in India. It has helped empower communities during its growth, and has been able to see first-hand what can be achieved when working with us. That has included greater exposure of Apollo’s brand.

“Taking this partnership to more countries has enabled Apollo to broaden its range of consumers, and it has worked hard to engage compellingly with these new audiences. I’m delighted to say that today this journey has reached its natural conclusion with Apollo joining our family of global partners.”

Marco Paracciani, Chief Marketing Officer of Apollo Tyres Ltd, said:

“The three-year association with Manchester United has supported our business expansion plans especially in India, Middle East, South East Asia and Africa. Our various campaigns have helped us connect with young people, increasing awareness of brand Apollo and customer acquisitions in these regions.

“We believe that the global partnership will further help us position our brand and the products in the minds of consumers across geographies, in addition to being visible to the 659 million fans of the club.”

British side to record revenue of more than £500m in a single year as owners pocket £15m

* Manchester United also managed a record profit of £68.9million
* Commercial revenue rose by £71.4m to £268.3m for the year
* Operating expenses climbed to £436m, a jump of £49.4m (12.8 per cent)
* Net debt at the Old Trafford club increased by £5.7m to £260.9m
* Premier League rights rise will help commercial revenue in future
* The sacking of Louis van Gaal and his coaching staff cost United £8.4m

Manchester United have become the first British football club to rake in £500million in a year — while their owners pocketed £15m.

Figures released on Monday show the Old Trafford outfit generated a staggering income of £515.3m for the year ending June 30.

In world football, the vast amount is second only to Barcelona, who announced revenues of £570m in July.

Manchester United became the first British side to record revenues of half-a-billion in a year

Sacking of Louis van Gaal and staff cost United £8.4m - less than Roberto Martinez at Everton

The figures also revealed that, for the first time under a controversial dividend scheme, £20m was paid out to shareholders.

That means the six members of the Glazer family, who own 80 per cent of shares, have received their first annual windfalls of around £2.5m and have effectively emptied £15m from United's bank account. The vast revenue at Old Trafford is thanks largely to United's world-record £750m kit deal with adidas and a relentless commercial drive which has seen them sign 14 lucrative deals with new sponsors.

The US-based Glazer family took control of United in 2005 with a leveraged buyout, which saw them borrow £525m and transfer the debt to the club.
Last year it emerged that they were planning to pay $0.045 per share to shareholders in a move that many saw as a shameless lining of their own pockets.

United remain in debt to the tune of £260.9m, a rise of £5.7m on the previous year. Much of the debt relates historically to the takeover and while their commercial activity alone is enough to pay off that figure, it is thought that the club retain the debt for tax purposes.

The spreadsheet also revealed the cost of the departure of Louis van Gaal and his staff. Former manager Van Gaal was sacked in May, following the FA Cup final victory and a disappointing fifth-place Premier League finish, and replaced by Jose Mourinho.

The Dutchman and his backroom team were given £8.4m, which is less than the £10m-plus Sportsmail last week revealed Everton paid the sacked Roberto Martinez.

Bastian Schweinsteiger has also literally been written off, having been deemed surplus to requirements by Mourinho. The German World Cup winner's fall in status means he can no longer be included as one of United's assets, leading the club to write off a sum £6.7m.

Quote:
MAN UNITED - KEY FIGURES

- United posted a record total revenue of £515.3million, becoming the first British club to earn more than half a billion pounds in a single year.
- The club's total revenue is predicted to rise to between £530m and £540m next year, despite missing out on Champions League qualification.
- Operating profit for 2015-16 was £68.6m, compared to £31.6m the previous year.
- United's commercial revenue rose 36.3 per cent to £268.3m in a year that the agreement with Adidas came into play, helping retail revenues rise 207.9 per cent.
- Broadcasting revenue for the year increased by 30.4 per cent to £140.4m, primarily due to their participation in UEFA competitions.
- United's net debt increased 2.2 per cent to £260.9m, with that £5.7m change pinned on the impact of exchange rate movements on their United States dollar denominated debt.
- Total operating expenses increased by 12.8 per cent to £436.6m and employee benefit expenses were £232.2m, an increase of 14.6 per cent primarily thanks to contract extensions and a rise in salaries due to Champions League participation.
- The exit of manager Louis van Gaal and his coaching staff cost the club £8.4m in compensation.
- United wrote off £6.7m as midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger is 'no longer considered to be a member of the first team playing squad'.

Missing out on the Champions League again would damage United's deal with Adidas

Despite no Champions League football this season, United forecast that revenue will be between £530m and £540m in 2017 with money from the Premier League's new broadcast deal set to land.

United made an operating profit of £68.6m, compared with £31.6m the previous year. However, the highlight of the figures from a business sense, is the staggering rise in retail and commercial revenues.

As revealed by Sportsmail when the club signed their record deal with adidas, United took back a number of rights held by previous kit-maker Nike. Those included the return of the Megastore and allowed them to sign lucrative new deals with external retail companies, including Columbia and New Era.

Commercial revenue rocketed from £196.9m to £268.3m while retail went up 207.9 per cent to £65.7m.

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward said: 'Our (results) reflect the continued underlying strength of the business and the club is on target to achieve record revenues in 2017, even without the Champions League. This strong financial performance has enabled us to invest in our squad, team management and facilities to position us to challenge for, and win, trophies in the coming years.'

United spent around £150m on new players after the arrival of Mourinho, including a world-record £89m fee on Juventus midfielder Paul Pogba.
And Woodward added: 'We're writing the next chapter in our history. We believe this investment should translate into further growth of the club financially.'

Revenues for 2017 - minus Champions League football - are expected to hit £540m

CONCHA Y TORO EXTEND DEAL WITH UNITED

Manchester United and Concha y Toro renew global partnership

• One of the club’s longest-standing partners
• First-ever wine deal in English football
• Partnership built around iconic Casillero del Diablo brand

Manchester United’s long-standing Official Wine Partner, Concha y Toro, is renewing its global agreement with the club.

The new three-year term secures Chile’s leading wine producer as holding one of the longest-standing partnerships currently held with United, dating back to 2010 and now renewed until 2019.

Concha y Toro has built the partnership, the first global agreement between a wine brand and an English club, around its iconic Casillero del Diablo brand, with the flagship wine available across Old Trafford’s hospitality suites. Over this six-year period, the exposure and popularity of the brand has gone from strength to strength.

The legend of Casillero del Diablo began more than 100 years ago, when Don Melchor de Concha y Toro, founder of the winery, reserved an exclusive batch of the best wines for himself. To keep strangers away from this special private reserve, he spread the rumour that the Devil lived in his cellar, giving birth to the Casillero del Diablo tag.

The club’s first-ever wine partner has worked hard to engage with Manchester United fans and Casillero del Diablo consumers throughout this period. It has organised events such as three ‘Devil’s matches’, bringing Manchester United Soccer Schools to the USA and Chile and hosting United legends including Sir Bobby Charlton and Bryan Robson on wine-tasting tours of Chile, important events for the trade.

The launch of the limited-edition Manchester United Legendary Wine Collection has also enjoyed great success since its launch in 2014, selling around 300,000 bottles.

As a global partner, Concha y Toro has also been highly active in working with Manchester United internationally, partnering with the club on its previous four summer tours in Asia and the USA and organising activities with fans in around 40 countries. Greater exposure as a result of the partnership, including visibility on digital perimeter boards at Old Trafford and TV adverts, has helped Concha y Toro develop its offering to cater for new markets around the world.

As part of the renewed agreement, the partnership aims to boost further growth and success, following the development of new objectives and new ideas.

Manchester United Group Managing Director Richard Arnold comments: "Long-standing relationships are very important to us and Casillero del Diablo is at the heart of our family of global partners, and a natural part of our fabric too. As it has become a familiar part of the Old Trafford and Manchester United experience; its success and growth has helped people around the world see its true quality and helped put Chilean wine on the map.

"With a rich heritage, a clear identity, popularity around the world and a commitment to quality, we have shared a lot of common ground and this will be the bedrock of our success moving forward."

Concha y Toro’s Corporate Marketing Director Global Brands Cristobal Goycoolea comments: "Casillero del Diablo and Manchester United share the pillars of history, tradition and values, and these three characteristics have made this alliance a true global success. We are very proud to renew our contract, and it motivates us to continue working the way we always have."
