Manchester United have moved a step closer to signing Sporting's Bruno Fernandes. Sporting captain Fernandes scored 32 goals and added 18 assists in all competitions last term

Fernandes has four years left on his current deal with the Portuguese side.

Manchester United handed boost in pursuit of £70m Bruno Fernandes as Sporting Lisbon 'close in on deal for midfielder's replacement'

* Manchester United have been handed a boost in their chase of Bruno Fernandes
* The Portugal international is valued at £70m by his club Sporting Lisbon
* Old Trafford chiefs are already reportedly in talks with Sporting over the move
* And Sporting are closing in on signing a replacement, Aleksandar Trajkovski

Manchester United have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Bruno Fernandes after Sporting Lisbon closed in on his replacement.

The Portugal international playmaker, 24, is a summer transfer target for both clubs as they look to strengthen in that area of the field.

Fernandes, who is valued at £70million, scored 32 goals and added 18 assists in all competitions last season and helped his country win the UEFA Nations League.

Manchester United have been handed a boost in their pursuit of Bruno Fernandes. The Old Trafford club have reportedly entered talks with the Sporting Lisbon and Portugal star

United reportedly met officials from Sporting to make progress on the deal this week and now reports by Italian website Alfredo Pedulla say the Portuguese club have found his replacement.

Manchester City have also been linked with Fernandes this summer.

Sporting are closing in on a deal for Palermo's Aleksandar Trajkovski, 26, who is poised to sign a four-year contract.

Trajkovski, an international player for North Macedonia, is versatile enough to play the playmaker role, as well as on the wing and up front.

United will certainly need to fill a hole in midfield if Paul Pogba gets his wish and completes a £150m move to Real Madrid or Juventus this summer.

Newcastle United's Sean Longstaff is another possibility but Old Trafford chiefs have reportedly been left stunned by his £50m price tag.

Manchester United 'to make offer for Bruno Fernandes THIS WEEK' after sealing deal for Harry Maguire… with Sporting Lisbon star a top target even if Paul Pogba stays this summer

* Manchester United have been heavily linked with a move for Bruno Fernandes
* Portuguese reports say United will enter negotiations this week for midfielder
* Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted that United's spending is not finished

Manchester United will begin negotiations this week to bring Bruno Fernandes to Old Trafford.

According to A Bola, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is ready to move on to his next target this transfer window and an approach will be made to Sporting Lisbon in the coming days.

Fernandes, who lifted the Nations League trophy with Portugal last month, has a £90million release clause in his contract with the Portuguese side.

Bruno Ferandes is now a top target for Manchester United, according to reports in Portugal. The Sporting midfielder has a release clause of £90million and United will open talks this week. Fernandes will not be a replacement for Paul Pogba, according to the report in Portugal
It is thought United will submit an opening offer around the £50m mark for the midfielder.

The report goes on to explain that Fernandes has been made a top target and his signature isn't dependent on the future of Paul Pogba.

The France midfielder has flirted with a move away from Old Trafford this summer, with both Juventus and Real Madrid keen to bring in the World Cup winner.

The Portuguese paper insists that United's interest has increased due to the fact that their bid to land Harry Maguire from Leicester has been successful.

The 26-year-old has confirmed his desire to leave the King Power Stadium, however Manchester City are also interested in the England international and United do not yet have a deal.

It is understood Leicester will hold out for a fee of at least £85m - a world record for a defender.

Default Re: Bruno Fernandes

He cut his teeth in Serie A before breakout season with staggering 32 goals for Sporting Lisbon - All you need to know about Manchester United's £70m target Bruno Fernandes

* Bruno Fernandes has been on the radar of top clubs after last season's exploits
* Portuguese scored a remarkable 32 goals for Sporting Lisbon from midfield
* He is accomplished with both feet and a dream for attacking team-mates
* Here, Sportsmail takes a closer inspection of the 24-year-old rising star

Bruno Fernandes has become one of Europe's most sought-after midfielders after his incredible season for Sporting Lisbon.

The Portugal star even surprised Jose Mourinho with his meteoric rise to the top, so it is well worth a closer inspection of the 24-year-old.

Here, Sportsmail dives deeper on Fernandes' style of play, why he could be invaluable to Manchester United and how he is such a goal threat.

How did Fernandes forge his way to the top?

Last season was Fernandes' breakout campaign with a record 32 goals from midfield.

But before then, few will have known much about the man from Maia in northern Portugal. He spent his formative years with Boa Vista before signing for Novara in 2012.

And he would go on to hone his craft in Serie A with Udinese, where he played 86 matches before joining Sampdoria for a year in 2016. The surprising thing is, he was never more than an occasional goalscorer, more of a neat and tidy player controlling midfield.

So really, out of nowhere, Fernandes has shot to prominence and is now valued at around £70m.

Fernandes broke through at Udinese and gained plenty of experience in Serie A

He capped off last season winning the UEFA Nations League with Portugal and even compatriot Jose Mourinho was staggered by Fernandes' emergence.

'I was surprised by the season of Bruno,' he told Eleven Sports. 'It was easy to predict quality, he is a very good player, but scored a very high number of goals for a midfield player.

'It shows that you need to have instinct and qualities to score and he has it all.

'He strikes the ball well, heads well, cool when he is one-on-one with the goalkeeper. He finds space in the penalty area. It’s all there.'

After gleaning plenty of experience at a high level from a young age, it seemed something just clicked for Fernandes.

The Sporting Lisbon midfielder caused havoc among opposition defences last year

What's his style of play?

The 24-year-old isn't a bruiser at 5ft 10in but has the frame to retain possession in the final third and this affords him all the time he needs to play a killer pass or pick the right option.

He is someone opposition defenders have to constantly monitor as a duel threat, both creatively and as a predator around goal too.

With an average of 3.1 key passes and 3.5 shots per game last season, he was the most consistent weapon in Sporting's team and is always on the lookout for a game-changing intervention, rather than picking a simple pass to move play along.

He has a languid running style, isn't afraid to try a flick or a nutmeg and will hardly ever pass up an opportunity to put his laces through it and test the goalkeeper.

Sporting offered him relative freedom and he'd often pick the ball up from deep to launch attacks as well as linking close to Bas Dost up front.

The 24-year-old can strike the ball with power off both feet and is a huge goal-scoring threat. The Portuguese midfielder has become one of the most impressive talents in Europe

How is his attacking output so high?

Fernandes has a wand of a right foot and slightly favours that side but also scored a bucketload of goals with his left last season.

Defenders really have to pick their poison in showing him on to either side because he can hurt a team from anywhere and also delivered 13 assists to team-mates last season.

His Frank Lampard-esque ability to time runs into the box gives midfielders tracking back an absolute nightmare and his numbers were also boosted by the fact that he took penalties, free-kicks and corners.

As a spectator, when you track Fernandes in a game for a while you can see him drift into dangerous areas with a kind of nonchalance that makes it seem like there isn't any immediate danger, but when he receives the ball he's already plotted the next move and that quick thinking also accounts for such incredible attacking numbers.

What could he offer United?

Paul Pogba was the main goal-scoring threat from midfield last season at Old Trafford but no player scored more than one goal from outside the box.

The threat posed by Fernandes from range could remedy that and free-up more space for other team-mates in and around the area.

Marcus Rashford in particular would relish linking up with the Portuguese as neat one-twos are very much part of his repertoire.

Fernandes has the sort of guile in midfield that United have been lacking and at times last season they looked bereft of ideas when confronted with a team sitting deep against them. His addition would certainly help pick a few stubborn locks.

Are there any weaknesses?

Like a boxer trying to land that one concussive blow, Fernandes is always looking for the killer play.

This can lead to him biting off a bit more than he can chew at times or taking too many risks.

The rewards were worth it at Sporting but with a higher calibre of opposition in the Premier League, he might not be afforded such tolerance if he is wasteful.

'For that he doesn't leave, for sure:' Sporting Lisbon president insists Manchester United will have to bid OVER £56million to have any chance of landing top target Bruno Fernandes

* Manchester United will have to pay more than £56million for Bruno Fernandes
* Sporting Lisbon president Frederico Varandas won't consider a lower fee
* United are eager to bring in the Portugal international to bolster their resources

Sporting Lisbon president Frederico Varandas has insisted that Manchester United will have to bid more than £56million if they are to have any chance of signing Bruno Fernandes this summer.

United have identified Fernandes as one of their key targets in the closing stages of the transfer window, with reports indicating that the Premier League side are preparing a bid of £50million for the Portugal international.

However, it appears that United will have to make a more substantial offer if a deal is to come to fruition.

Varandas told RTP: 'I don't know if there are many or if there are few [interested clubs].

'What I know, a lot has been spoken of values, coming to the press, €55m, €62m… for that he doesn't leave, for sure.

'If Bruno Fernandes leaves, players with quality will come. But if Bruno leaves.'

Man United will have to bid over £56mfor Bruno Fernandes, says Sporting Lisbon's president. United are eager to secure a deal for Fernandes, who scored 32 goals last campaign

Fernandes enjoyed a fine 2018-19 campaign for Sporting, with the midfielder scoring 32 goals across all competitions.

The arrival of the 24-year-old would help add some dynamism to the United midfield, but Sporting are eager to get as much money as possible for him.

Paris Saint-Germain have also been linked with Fernandes, who was part of the Portugal squad that won the Nations League this summer.

United have made two signings so far in this transfer window, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Daniel James joining from Crystal Palace and Swansea respectively.

The club are eager to improve after a bitterly disappointing conclusion to the 2018-19 campaign that saw them finish in sixth place in the Premier League.

Fernandes impressed for Sporting Lisbon in their 2-2 draw with Liverpool, scoring the first from range before setting up the second.

He came to attention after a stunning season in Portugal, hitting 32 goals and registering 18 assists for his club and playing for his country in the Nations League.

Leicester defender Harry Maguire, however, reportedly remains the club's main target, although Manchester United have yet to meet the Foxes' £80m valuation.

Chief executive Ed Woodward did not join his club's pre-season tour in order to continue working on transfers.

Bruno's final goodbye: Manchester United target Fernandes set to captain Sporting Lisbon against rivals Benfica in Portuguese Super Cup on Sunday before sealing £56m Old Trafford deal

* Bruno Fernandes is closing in on a £56million move to Manchester United
* The midfielder will reportedly captain Sporting Lisbon in his final appearance
* Sporting play Benfica in the Portuguese Super Cup at Estadio Algarve on Sunday
* The club's coach is said to be determined to play his star man one last time

Bruno Fernandes is set to captain Sporting Lisbon in the Portuguese Super Cup on Sunday before he seals a highly-anticipated £56million move to Manchester United.

According to reports in A Bola and Record in Portugal, the 24-year-old will play one final time for the club, against their rivals Benfica at the Estadio Algarve.

It is claimed that Sporting coach Marcel Keizer is determined to get his star man out one more time, believing it unprofessional to change any of his plans this close to the derby.

The squad also believe the midfielder will play for the team one last time, despite his tears and apparent goodbye during a friendly against Valencia at the weekend.

The star midfielder broke down in tears after coming off the pitch at full-time. Standing in the middle of the pitch surrounded by a handful of his team-mates, he could not hide his emotions from those watching on.

There could yet be more emotion this weekend if Fernandes does indeed wear the captain's armband on his final run-out for the Portuguese giants.

Bruno Fernandes looks set to captain Sporting Lisbon in his final match for the club this week

The talented midfielder graced the cover of both Record and A Bola in Portugal on Tuesday. Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants to bolster his midfield options this month. Fernandes is close to sealing a £56million move from Portugal to Manchester United

After the Valencia game, Sporting boss Keizer accepted that he is not sure what the future holds: 'We'll see if we can keep our players and then we'll see what we do. I hope he [Fernandes] stays, of course, like everyone else at Sporting, but we don't know.'

The midfielder scored 32 goals and set up a further 18 last season to draw the attention of the Old Trafford side.

Fernandes has continued to turn out for Sporting Lisbon throughout pre-season with plenty of talk over where he will play next season.

He had previously starred in his side's 2-2 friendly draw with Liverpool, scoring and assisting in an impressive display.

Speaking before the visit of Valencia, Fernandes remained coy when quizzed on a switch to England.

'Will this be the last match for Sporting? I don't know, it's the coach who decides,' the midfielder told A BOLA.

'I told I'd like to play in England, but I don't care about it right now.

'If it could be this season? It could be when the club decides, I'm not in charge.'

Now Spurs want Bruno Fernandes! Club chiefs negotiate swoop for £56m Sporting Lisbon star in Portugal after Manchester United backed off

* Tottenham have someone in Portugal as they aim to sign Bruno Fernandes
* The Portugal midfielder was the subject of interest from Manchester United
* But Spurs are now most advanced in the race to land the Sporting Lisbon star

Tottenham were on Thursday night attempting to seal a £56million swoop for Sporting Lisbon star Bruno Fernandes.

Spurs have a firm interest in the 24-year-old midfielder and club officials were understood to be in Portugal on Thursday to negotiate a swoop.

The Portugal international has attracted interest from Manchester United - but Tottenham are now most advanced in the race to land Fernandes.

The move should help appease manager Mauricio Pochettino, who has grown frustrated at the lack of transfer activity during the current window.

So far Tottenham have made two major signings this summer, with Tanguy Ndombele and Jack Clarke joining the club, the latter having immediately returned to Leeds on loan.

United were in hot pursuit of the 24-year-old this summer, but the Red Devils have now distanced themselves from speculation regarding a deal.

However, Tottenham are now looking to sign the player, who helped Portugal to win the Nations League this summer.

Fernandes produced some outstanding performances for Sporting last season, as demonstrated by the fact that he scored 32 goals and provided 18 assists in 53 appearances across all competitions.

Tottenham were in Portugal on Thursday to negotiate a £56million swoop for Bruno Fernandes

Speaking this week Tottenham boss Pochettino claimed he was not in charge of transfers at the club.

He said: ‘I am not in charge. I know nothing about the situation of my players. I am only coaching them, trying to get the best from them.

‘This type of thing, sell or buy players, extend contract or not extend contract: it’s not in my hands, it’s in the club’s hands and in Daniel Levy’s hands.

‘I am managing the team in the best way possible.’

Bruno Fernandes has agreed personal terms with Tottenham despite latest bid of £56m being rejected… and Sporting Lisbon won't accept a penny less than £64.5m

* Sporting Lisbon star Bruno Fernandes has agreed personal terms with Spurs
* However, Spurs and Sporting are still far apart in their valuation of Fernandes
* The Portuguese side have already rejected two offers from Tottenham
* Sporting's president said he would not accept anything less than £64.5m
* Spurs are still £10m short of Sporting's valuation of the prolific playmaker

Bruno Fernandes has told Sporting Lisbon that he wants to leave the club and has already agreed personal terms with Tottenham.

However, the north London side and Sporting are still far apart in their valuation of the player.

Spurs have already made two offers for the playmaker and have traveled to Lisbon to negotiate a deal for the 24-year-old.

Before the trip, Spurs made an offer of £41million via email, which was declined.

In Lisbon, Tottenham's chief scout Steve Hitchen made a new offer of £46m and £10m more in bonuses, if the Portuguese international met certain targets.

The proposal was again rejected by Sporting, who informed Tottenham and Fernandes – who was considered the best player in the Primeira Liga last season, that they wouldn't let him go for less than £64.5m.

Sporting Lisbon star Bruno Fernandes has agreed personal terms with Tottenham. Fernandes was one of the standout players in Portugal last season as he scored 29 goals. Reports suggest that agent Jorge Mendes is recommending a move to Man United

Sporting president Frederico Varandas recently said in an interview that he would not accept an offer lower than £64.5m for the player following his superb performances for club and country last season. However, Tottenham seem unwilling to pay that much for Fernandes, even with possible bonuses.

Varandas would be willing to accept an offer of £55m and a further £15m in bonuses to stop a fan revolt considering Fernandes is arguably the best player in the league.

Sporting also believe their best chance of winning silverware is with Fernandes in their offensive ranks. Also, Joao Felix's staggering £114m move to Atletico from Benfica won't have helped Tottenham's cause.

For now, however, the main club interested in signing Fernandes is Tottenham. At the moment his agent is only negotiating with the London club, but he also knows that other agents are trying to negotiate a deal for the player with clubs such as Manchester United, AC Milan and Atletico Madrid.

Fernandes and his agent have not yet received any official proposals other than the offer from Tottenham. Between Spurs, the midfielder and his manager, on the contrary, everything is agreed but still without any signed commitment.

This does not mean that Fernandes has closed the door to other clubs. It just means that Fernandes likes the Tottenham project, the only club that truly presented him with a project.

There were official inquiries from other clubs, notably Marseille and others from Italy, but Spurs are the only side to have pursued Fernandes fully.

The former Sampdoria man has already informed Sporting that he would like to leave, preferably to England, which is why other agents have mooted solutions for his future.

he midfielder would not say no to other agent's offers, but they will also have to be accepted by his current representative, who is also his brother-in-law.

There are reports about Jorge Mendes' intervention in the deal, specifically to try and take him to United, but the truth is that so far the main portuguese agent and one of the most influential in the world has not yet made any offer to the player, his agent and still Sporting.

If United's supposed offer of £64.5m isn't true, Fernandes will try to convince Tottenham to match that offer, something that seems difficult, despite Spurs maintaining contact with his manager and Sporting on a daily basis.
