Default Manchester United under Carrick

'That result feels like it's for Ole': Michael Carrick dedicates Manchester United's vital win at Villarreal to sacked Solskjaer... as caretaker boss admits 'it's been an emotional few days'

* Manchester United beat Villarreal to reach the Champions League last-16
* The result meant that Michael Carrick tasted victory in his first game in charge
* Speaking at full-time, Carrick admitted the last few days have been 'emotional'
* He also dedicated the key victory to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer following his sacking

Michael Carrick dedicated victory over Villarreal to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as he guided Manchester United into the knockout stage of the Champions League.

Carrick's first victory as caretaker boss since replacing Solskjaer on Sunday saw him become the first Englishman to win his opening game as United boss for 90 years.

Jadon Sancho also scored for the first time since his £73million move to Old Trafford in the summer to clinch United's first Champions League win away from home in a year.

'It's not been an easy couple of days for everyone at the club,' said Carrick. 'I can enjoy it so much but still, that result feels like it's for Ole, I can't get away from that.

Michael Carrick dedicated Manchester United's win over Villarreal to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Carrick is now United's caretaker boss after Solskjaer was sacked at the weekend. Carrick admitted that the start of his temporary reign at Old Trafford has been 'emotional'

'It's not an important result for me, it's for the club and the players. Tonight isn't about me by any stretch.

'It's been an emotional few days. The first person I spoke to when it all happened and Ed (Woodward) asked me to do the role was Ole to see what he thought about it.

'I have a responsibility to be here and manage the team and I take great pride in that.

'We had a job to do without dwelling on it, things needed to be taken care of, and thankfully it all went to plan in the end.'

Carrick made bold call to drop Bruno Fernandes and Marcus Rashford for Donny van de Beek and Anthony Martial. He reversed the switch in the second half and saw United score twice through Cristiano Ronaldo and Sancho.

The 2-0 win means that United are guaranteed of qualifying from Group F with one game left to play at home to Young Boys.

'I had a feeling it would be a tight game,' added Carrick. 'I said before the game it's important who starts it, but it's just as important how you finish it.

'That was the balancing act going through the minds of me and my staff, and in the end it kind of came through.

'The game panned out as I thought. When you've had the results we've had and gone through what we have, it would be very foolish to think it would be free-flowing and everything would be wonderful.

'We came here to win the game. I believed we would, we were ready for it tonight, and that proved to be the case.

'In some ways it was the best way to win as a team. We had to show some character, dig in and fight.'

On Sancho's first goal for the club, Carrick said: 'It will give Jadon a massive boost. Most pleasing for me was the effort and application he put in off the ball. At times he didn't see a lot of the ball but he was doing a job.'

The United caretaker also paid tribute to Ronaldo after he scored his sixth goal in the Champions League this season.

'There's not much more I can really say about Cristiano,' added Carrick. 'It's what he does in the big games and big moments. When you need something, he's there to deliver.'

Default Re: Manchester United under Carrick

Sulky Fernandes needs some love and gaping holes in defence and midfield leave Man United too reliant on De Gea... Michael Carrick's brief reign started with a win but there's A LOT to fix - and quickly

* Michael Carrick began his time as Man United interim boss with a victory
* They beat Villarreal 2-0 to reach the last-16 of the Champions League
* Jadon Sancho finally scored his first goal for United following his £73m move
* He impressed but Donny van de Beek needs more game time to find his best
* United's midfield and defence remain wide open and slow to react to danger
* But there were still some encouraging signs in the wake of Solskjaer's sacking

Well, it wasn't bad for starters.

Michael Carrick took the reins at Manchester United under pretty awkward circumstances but he successfully steered them into the knockout rounds of the Champions League by winning his first match in charge.

The win over Villarreal on Tuesday night felt like it should be dedicated to sacked boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, having unquestionably guided United forward in the past three years before stumbling badly in recent weeks.

But while there were positives from the 2-0 win in Spain, there were also plenty of glaring weaknesses and problems that Carrick, and whoever comes in next, will need to fix to get United back on track.

United recovered from the shock of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's sacking to claim a crucial win

We take a look at what Carrick would have learned from the game and the issues that remain.

Fernandes still needs some love

It was surprising to see Bruno Fernandes not rush off in pursuit of Jadon Sancho after the winger smashed home his first United goal to set the seal on victory.

The Portuguese, who supplied the lay-off to tee Sancho up, just ambled along in a disinterested manner as Sancho raced off.

In fact at one point, Sancho looked behind to see if any of his team-mates wanted to share in his joy.

It wasn't as though Fernandes, who only came on after 66 minutes, could have been tired and so it suggested his attitude still isn't quite right.

Fernandes (background) set Sancho up for his first United goal but then looked disinterested in celebrating the moment with him. Fernandes played well against Villarreal having come off the bench but needs a breather

It was Fernandes who tried to placate the angry United fans who jeered Solskjaer after Saturday's 4-1 defeat at Watford that proved the final straw for the manager.

The Portuguese probably felt responsible for the situation to some degree after a few weeks of looking off-colour in matches.

His body language has also been poor and there were rumblings of discontent from his camp about Solskjaer's methods long before he was fired.

But Fernandes can hardly be blamed for not scaling the same heights he did last season, when he scored 28 goals and contributed 17 assists in all competitions.

He has played football solidly since arriving at United and it was always going to catch up with him at some point. Between June 2020 and the end of the Euros, he played 87 matches for club and country - more than anyone else in Europe's top five leagues.

This season, he had started every Premier League and Champions League match for United - until last night.

Carrick was sensible to start him on the bench in Spain because Fernandes is in desperate need of a break in some form. When he was introduced, he helped change the game in United's favour.

That may have to be the way things are done for the next few games as well to restore Fernandes' energy levels a little.

In the meantime, Carrick must stress just how important he is to the team and show him a little love to prevent any more sulking.

There's still gaping holes in the side

By rights, United should have been dead and buried long before Cristiano Ronaldo seized on a defensive mistake to lob United into their 78th-minute lead.

David de Gea made a series of crucial saves, including two outstanding ones to deny Manu Trigueros, who was left cursing his luck.

It is too common an occurrence for United this season. The Spanish keeper has kept them in contention in too many matches.

It's a consequence of gaping holes in defence and midfield, allowing opponents to slice through them far too easily.

One first-half save was the result of a simple long kick from the Villarreal keeper, with one player outmuscling Alex Telles, Harry Maguire not really paying attention and Fred failing to track a runner from midfield.

On another occasion, Moi Gomez was allowed to breeze away from Scott McTominay and get a shot away from the edge of the box after Victor Lindelof and Aaron Wan-Bissaka both followed the same runner.

After the ball deflected out to Trigueros, both Maguire and Telles were too slow to react, meaning United were again indebted to De Gea for a one-handed save.

Fred and McTominay have been United's first choice midfield pairing for quite some time now yet still can give the impression they've just met.

United were still reliant on the crucial saves of keeper David de Gea to win in Villarreal. United captain Harry Maguire tries to organise a defence that still look very vulnerable

Villarreal ultimately didn't have the quality to punish United's openness but the likes of Leicester, Liverpool, Man City and even Watford have in recent games. Chelsea certainly will this Sunday given their sparkling form.

Carrick was an excellent midfielder for United and perhaps he could use some of his expertise to help Fred and McTominay get more of a grip in games.

The same applies to Maguire and Lindelof, the first choice central defensive pairing for a long while now, yet still all at sea in almost every match.

Van de Beek's confidence needs to be built up

A few eyebrows were raised when the team sheets were revealed with Carrick opting for Donny van de Beek ahead of Fernandes in the United starting line-up.

Having been introduced at half time in the Watford game and then this start, it appears the Dutchman's time to shine has come at last.

But on the evidence of the Villarreal match, Van de Beek is going to need a bit of time to rebuild his game and his confidence.

He wasn't on the same wavelength as his team-mates for much of the evening which maybe isn't surprising given he has barely played alongside them.

Donny van de Beek was afforded a rare United start but wasn't on the same wavelength. Van de Beek may get more opportunities in the weeks ahead but needs to find some form

As mentioned, Fernandes can't be relied upon in each and every game and with Paul Pogba out injured, Van de Beek should be given more opportunities in the hectic festive schedule.

Carrick should keep him in that No 10 role to unlock his full creative abilities and hopefully with a bit more game time, he will show some of the Ajax form that persuaded United to pay £40million for him in the first place.

As Sportsmail revealed on Wednesday, Van de Beek is among a collection of United players who have put exit plans on hold for this January.

Whoever the new manager is, he should receive a clean slate with 18 months of inactivity and disappointment under Solskjaer put firmly behind him. But it is up to Van de Beek now to seize that chance.

So United can press

Remember that horrific 5-0 defeat to Liverpool last month when United attempted to mimic the pressing game of Jurgen Klopp's side and ended up looking like rank amateurs?

It's clear that United are light years behind Liverpool and Pep Guardiola's Man City when it comes to hustling opponents to win the ball back.

It's something that can be worked upon but is going to take months, if not years, to get down to a fine art.

But Tuesday night was a good starting point, with Fred's anticipation and effective pressing of Etienne Capoue from an ill-advised pass out from his keeper leading to Ronaldo's well-taken opening goal.

Cristiano Ronaldo's deft finish for United's opening goal resulted from some sharp pressing. Ronaldo must realise that plenty of goals will come his way if United can work a proper press

United need to make this a more regular feature of their game. The attacking line must put opponents under pressure more, especially when they try and play out from the back as is the modern fad.

Cristiano Ronaldo surely realises that chances such as the one he gobbled up at Villarreal will come his way if he and his team-mates put in those extra sprints to exert pressure.

United's Portuguese superstar has been much-criticised for his lack of pressing and tracking back since he returned and it is surprising to see someone who takes such pride in his fitness levels not do more of it.

He can't be relying on young tyros Sancho, Marcus Rashford or Mason Greenwood to do all the work but if they all combined, then United could be so much more effective.

Carrick only had 48 hours to prepare the team for this one, and that included travel time, so it's encouraging that better pressing was a feature of their game.

Now to get onto the training ground and make it a hallmark of United's football. They'll need it if they're to hold a candle to City, Liverpool and Chelsea going forward.

Lift off for Sancho

Now that Sancho has his first goal for United - and a superb finish it was too - they will hope his confidence can take off and the England star can show exactly why they paid £73m for him.

There will no doubt be claims that the shackles have been released now Solskjaer has gone but this would be unfair.

Sancho was given plenty of game time in the opening weeks of the season and was only demoted to the bench after failing to deliver a goal or assist in quite a few games.

Jadon Sancho was delighted after finally scoring his first goal for United after his £73m move. Carrick (right) will hope that Sancho can kick on and deliver more goals and assists from here

He has subsequently been involved against Leicester, Man City and Watford, so he's hardly been reduced to a cameo role.

Nonetheless, the first goal represents a major breakthrough for a player perhaps feeling the heavy burden of such a big price tag. That it happened with Carrick in the dug-out is mere coincidence.

The interim manager's job now is to let Sancho enjoy the moment and encourage him to do similar against Chelsea this weekend and in the more winnable games that follow.

Sancho showed more than enough class at Borussia Dortmund to suggest he can be a real asset for United in the long term. This is surely just the start.

Default Re: Manchester United under Carrick

Van de Beek needs an arm around the shoulder, Martial must repay Carrick's show of faith and Bailly has the chance to put pressure on Maguire... the Man United outcasts aiming for a shot at redemption after Solskjaer's exit

* Man United interim boss Michael Carrick has given club outcasts a fresh chance
* The likes of Donny van de Beek and Anthony Martial could get a second wind
* Sportsmail runs the rule over the stars looking to get a second crack of the whip

Michael Carrick hasn't been in charge at Manchester United for long, but he's already made it clear that the slate has been wiped clean for most players at the club.

After less than three days since the new interim coach replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, the club's former midfielder has a big task on his hands to rejuvenate the players following a torrid campaign so far, and his line-up against Villarreal on Tuesday night was a sign that everyone is getting a second chance.

Alex Telles, Donny van de Beek and Anthony Martial were all handed starts against the LaLiga side, and while they didn't all impress, they played their part in United's 2-0 win to secure a place in the Champions League knockouts.

Sancho, also took his chance after starting, scoring in the last minute to cap off an improved display following a difficult season. The former Dortmund star played as though the shackles had finally come off - and now the rest of the so-called 'outcasts' have a chance to shine too under Carrick.

Michael Carrick showed the slate is clean at Manchester United after starting Jadon Sancho (R) and other fringe stars against Villarreal on Tuesday night, including Donny van de Beek (C). Donny van de Beek, Anthony Martial and Alex Telles were all handed starts by their new interim boss

Sportsmail revealed this week that there are a number of players - also including Eric Bailly and Dean Henderson - who have put their plans to leave the club on hold after Solskjaer left.

With that in mind, we assess the Manchester United players with something to prove, why things haven't worked out and what they need to do to turn it around.

Donny van de Beek

Just a third start of the season for the downhearted Dutchman against Villarreal, and while he wasn't able to showcase the best of his ability in Spain, he will be encouraged to see chances are coming his way after scoring in Solskjaer's final game at United.

Van de Beek was subbed on 66 minutes for Bruno Fernandes, and was pretty anonymous during his hour on the pitch - struggling to carve open Villarreal and failing to link up well with his team-mates.

But it will take time for van de Beek to find his confidence again after being swept aside by Solskjaer. There is clearly a talented player in there somewhere, and whether it's Carrick or another manager who takes over for the season, he needs an arm round the shoulder to lift his spirits and allow him to find his best form.

Van de Beek struggled to impress against the LaLiga side but needs man management. He was frozen out by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and could do with an arm round the shoulder

From the offset since his £40m move from Ajax, van de Beek has not had a run of games to show off his talents fully, and it was clear Solskjaer was not a fan of his. A host of European sides were chasing his signature when he burst onto the scene with Ajax in the 2018-19 season, and now he can show United why with the Norwegian no longer keeping him out of the line-up.

Carrick starting him was a positive step to show he can still flourish, but he needs even more game time and better man management to thrive.

Anthony Martial

When the Frenchman joined United in 2015 - for a fee that could rise to £65m - then-boss Louis van Gaal said he had signed him 'for my successor'. Well, Jose Mourinho struggled to get the best out of him and the man after him in Solskjaer didn't have much luck either.

So it falls to the fourth man in line to try and get the forward firing again. We have seen evidence of his quality - just two seasons ago he netted 17 Premier League goals - but hasn't managed to keep up the consistency.

Injuries have troubled Martial too, missing half of last season with ruptured knee ligaments. He has made just two Premier League starts this term, scoring once in one of those opportunities in the 1-1 draw with Everton.

Anthony Martial didn't capitalise on his start against Villarreal and must make more of his opportunities under Carrick

His new boss Carrick played alongside Martial for three seasons and knows what he's capable of - hence why he started him against Villarreal, but also showed him he has to do more when given the chance after hooking him for Marcus Rashford on 66 minutes with the score still level.

Considering regular minutes have been hard to come by for Martial, he cannot afford to waste openings in a similar manner to Tuesday night, when he was largely ineffective and failed to offer any meaningful attacks.

Dean Henderson

There was a point where Dean Henderson was being talked up as a future England No 1 after catching the eye during two successful loan spells at Sheffield United, and United opted to bring him back rather than sell him as they looked for a strong competitor for David de Gea.

While Henderson played 26 games last season, including 13 in the Premier League, he failed to oust De Gea as the club's first choice, and hasn't had much luck this season - despite signs the Spaniard was past his best in recent years.

De Gea hasn't been at his best this season but it will still take a few more high profile errors to get him out of the picture, and showed he still has top drawer quality after some fantastic saves against Villarreal.

As is the case for most goalkeepers - Henderson will have just keep impressing in training and wait for his opportunity if it comes. If he decides against that, there should be more than a few clubs looking for a new keeper in January, including the likes of Newcastle.

Eric Bailly

No one can accuse the Ivorian of not trying after confronting Ole Gunnar Solskjaer over why he had decided to play Harry Maguire over him during the 4-2 loss against Leicester City last month.

Maguire turned out a poor display after being rushed back from injury and Bailly was left questioning why the Norwegian had continued to exile him and instead go for a player who wasn't fit.

Eric Bailly is hungry to play more games this season and will be keen to put pressure on the underperforming Harry Maguire. Bailly was unhappy the unfit centre-back started over him at Leicester and now has a chance to play alongside him, and possibly replace him if he impresses

Solskjaer continued to keep faith in his captain throughout this turbulent season, despite some woeful performances from the England star, but now the pressure is on Maguire to start finding some consistency, with Bailly now having a chance to come in from the cold.

His only Premier League start this campaign came in the 2-0 home defeat to rivals Manchester City, as he scored an own goal and was hooked at half time, which didn't exactly help his cause.

But with Raphael Varane still out injured, there is an opportunity for Bailly to come in and start alongside Maguire, although when the star Frenchman returns it is up to the former Villarreal man to ensure he at the top of his game in training to make a difficult decision for Carrick.

Alex Telles

Brought in for Luke Shaw following the player picking up a knock in the 4-1 loss to Watford, the former Porto star put in an energetic display against Villarreal, but while he was impressive going forward - he left some space in behind and was guilty of a few defensive errors.

Telles might find it tough to dethrone Shaw, whose injury does not appear to be serious after being left at home as a precaution, and may have to make do with starts in cup competitions.

He is yet to start a game in any competition other than the Champions League this season but that could all change under Carrick if he keeps up his enthusiasm and work ethic on the Carrington training pitch.

Alex Telles will have a tough task replacing Luke Shaw at left back but put in an energetic display against Villarreal

Diogo Dalot

The Portuguese defender has been restricted to substitute appearances this term, starting just a handful of cup games, and the former Porto star has been linked with a move to Roma, managed by his former boss Jose Mourinho.

The Italian club appear keen on Dalot with their director Tiago Pinto refusing to rule out a swoop in January, and United have been linked with England right-back Kieran Trippier in recent months.

Recent reports have indicated that Dalot sees his future at Old Trafford and he certainly won't get a better chance of making a fist of it with United after four seasons of anonymity.

Diogo Dalot hasn't played much football this season but reportedly sees his future at United

Paling tidak di masa Carrick yang terbilang singkat ini kita bisa mengetahui bahwa Carrick memiliki potensi karir manajerial yang baik. Siapa tahu 5-10 tahun lagi Carrick bisa menjadi pelatih permanen United
