Manchester United defender Jonny Evans has been named in the Northern Ireland squad to face Israel in a friendly next week.

The Newtownabbey man has won 17 caps for his country scoring one goal.

Nigel Worthington has come to Manchester United's rescue by agreeing to let Jonny Evans return to Old Trafford for treatment, rather than risk aggravating a slight ankle injury against Israel at Windsor Park tonight.

With Nemanja Vidic already ruled out of Sunday's opening Barclays Premier League game with Birmingham, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was eager to safeguard Evans' fitness and ensure he was able to continue alongside Rio Ferdinand at the heart of the champions' defence.

Evans has trained with the rest of the Northern Ireland squad ahead of their World Cup warm-up game, but Worthington went along with a request from United and allowed the Belfast youngster to fly back to Manchester this morning.

Stephen Craigan will partner Aaron Hughes in the middle of defence, with Chris Baird and George McCartney filling the full-back roles.

Rangers midfielder Steve Davis is a surprise absentee from the starting line-up, but record goalscorer David Healy will win his 75th cap, despite suggestions he may be rested after failing to hit the target in Northern Ireland's last five games.

SEOUL: Park Chu-young came off the bench to score a late goal yesterday to give South Korea a 1-0 win over Paraguay in a friendly. The Monaco winger collected the rebound after goalkeeper Justo Villar had deflected a close-range shot and fired the ball into the top corner in the 83rd minute. Paraguay was missing star striker Roque Santa Cruz, who was recovering from knee surgery. South Korea coach Huh Jung-moo didn't select several key players, including Manchester United's Park Ji-sung and recent Bolton

The South Koreans, which have already qualified for next year's World Cup with an unbeaten record, have usually struggled against South American teams. Paraguay has now lost four straight matches and is yet to qualify for the tournament in South Africa. South Korea finished top of its qualifying group with 16 points, four ahead of North Korea, which also advanced. It was the first time North Korea had reached a World Cup since 1966, and it will be the first time the two Koreas play in the same World Cup.

Paraguay is third in its qualifying group with 24 points, two points clear of Argentina and four ahead of Ecuador. The top four teams qualify automatically. The hosts' best attempt in the first half was Yeom Ki-hun's 38th-minute free kick that was stopped in a diving save by Villar. Lee Dong-gook, playing his first international for South Korea since the 2007 Asian Cup, had earlier had a header from a free kick stopped by the goalkeeper.

Paraguay improved in the second half but still rarely threatened - Salvador Cabanas failed to properly connect with a cross in the 55th and Oscar Cardozo sent his shot wide in the 75th. South Korea will play Australia and Senegal in upcoming friendlies, so Huh can likely expose his team to different playing styles. Paraguay next faces Bolivia and Argentina in qualifiers. - AP

Tosic double downs South Africa

Manchester United reserve Zoran Tosic scored twice for Serbia as hosts South Africa continued their countdown to the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa™ with a 3-1 friendly loss.

Most of the drama came in the second half at Super Stadium outside Pretoria with Danko Lazovic claiming the other Serbian goal, while Katlego Mphela reduced the deficit deep in stoppage time. The result served as a reality check for a South African team widely praised by the public and media after finishing fourth in the FIFA Confederations Cup.

Serbia, lacking injured star defender Nemanja Vidic and midfielder general and captain Dejan Stankovic, comfortably soaked up first-half South African pressure before taking control after half-time and building a three-goal lead. "We have a key World Cup qualifier against France next month and this result was very important because it will give us a lot of confidence," said half-time substitute Tosic.

Coach Radomir Antic said: "This was a good warm-up for France. South Africa were very skilful in the first half while Serbia dominated the second and I'm confident that we are building a really solid team."

South Africa coach Joel Santana, who arrived in the country just 24 hours before the match after taking ill in his native Brazil, hailed Serbia as a country destined to reach the 2010 FIFA World Cup. "Serbia are a very good team, but we made it easier for them by conceding too much space in midfield after half-time. I was very impressed with my team in the first half when the marking and positional play was excellent."

Bafana Bafana came close to scoring after two minutes when a Mphela free kick was parried by goalkeeper Vladimir Stojkovic on to the crossbar. The vistors almost broke the deadlock twice late in the opening half only to be foiled by a brave block from goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune and a timely tackle from midfielder Macbeth Sibaya.

Tosic had a penalty appeal rejected before holding off Matthew Booth to stab the ball across substitute goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez into the far corner on 56 minutes. Lazovic half volleyed an Ivan Obradovic cross wide of Fernandez after 67 minutes and Tosic turned Lucas Thwala twice inside the penalty area before firing home the third goal 10 minutes later.

South Africa were facing a record home defeat until Mphela salvaged a little pride three mintues into stoppage time, bursting through the middle and lifting the ball over Stojkovic.

Maksudnya Manchester United reserve Zoran Tosic tuh apa ya? apa pemaen cadangan atau tim reserve? masak Zoran Tosic dibilang pemaen reserve-nya MU. bukannya Tosic pemaen utama?

Tapi ya bagus lah... 2 gol disaat tepat (Nani cedera) jadi punya kesempatan nempati wing kiri MU besok akhir pekan.
