JAMES WILSON'S KNEE INJURY CONFIRMED

Manchester United striker James Wilson is set to undergo an operation after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament knee injury during his loan spell at Derby County.

The 20-year-old has had tests on the problem at the Aon Training Complex after being hurt in a training session with the Championship side on Monday.

Following surgery, the England Under-21 international will begin a rehabilitation programme as he works hard to get back to full fitness.

"It's a great disappointment for him and for the club as well," said United Reserves coach Warren Joyce. "He's got to look to work his socks off and come back in the best shape he's ever been in his life. All you can do when you have setbacks is to try to be positive and look to make sure when you do return, it's in the best shape."

Derby boss Steve McClaren added on the club's official website: "It's incredibly disappointing news that James has suffered an injury like this.

"Only last week, I was saying how much I was looking forward to working with him because he is an exciting young talent. I know that he will bounce back from this disappointment, especially as well as being a very good player, he is also a strong and determined character."

BAILLY SUFFERS KNEE INJURY

Jose Mourinho has admitted he fears Eric Bailly was "badly injured" during Manchester United's 4-0 defeat at Chelsea on Sunday.

The Ivory Coast defender was forced off with a problem on 52 minutes and was replaced by Marcos Rojo.

The Reds boss confirmed afterwards that Bailly has a knee issue which could be serious.

"He is injured and I am afraid he is badly injured," Mourinho told reporters at the post-match press conference. "In his knee, in the ligament area. He feels it is really bad."

Marouane Fellaini also appeared to pick up a knock following a high tackle from David Luiz just before half-time which earned the Chelsea defender a booking. The United midfielder did not return to the fray for the second half, with Juan Mata coming on in his place.

Wayne Rooney was absent from Sunday's match squad due to an injury he suffered in the Reds' last training session. The club captain had felt a problem during the Fenerbahce game but played on in his determination to complete 90 minutes.

Manchester United have been dealt a major blow after it emerged that central defender Eric Bailly will be out for two months after through injury.

Bailly pulled up with a knee problem during the humiliating 4-0 defeat by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Sunday and subsequent medical tests have forecast a two month spell on the sidelines. Sportsmail understands that Bailly has suffered a lateral knee ligament injury.

Bailly, a £30m summer signing from Villarreal, has made an excellent start to life at Old Trafford and this is another significant setback as Jose Mourinho's side struggle for form.

'I hope to be able to play again for United and The Elephants before 2 months, God willing. Thanks for always being there!'

The news was confirmed to Bailly on Tuesday and he could miss as many as 12 upcoming games over the next two months, including key Premier League games against Arsenal, Everton and Tottenham.

It is hoped that Bailly may return a little earlier if his recovery goes fully to plan but the initial prediction by the medical staff is two months, which would see Bailly back in the United team for the hectic Christmas period.

Bailly is also expected to go to the Africa Cup of Nations in January and United therefore face the prospect of being deprived of their best centre-back for much of the winter months.

Manchester United's forgotten man Phil Jones is back in full training after recovering from his latest injury setback.

The 24-year-old has not been fit enough to figure under Jose Mourinho after suffering a knee ligament injury.

Jones has suffered a dreadful couple of seasons and only featured 13 times last season as he battled against a series of problems including a blood clot in his calf.

But now the England international has returned to training at Carrington at just the right time as Mourinho takes stock of defensive issues.

United have lost impressive Ivory Coast centre half Eric Bailly to a knee injury suffered at Chelsea last Sunday and the 22-year-old is not expected to return for two months.

Chris Smalling has also been carrying a foot injury, something that undoubtedly contributed to his poor performance in the 4-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge. He was not available for Wednesday's League Cup win at home to Manchester City.

So the return of Jones is a boost for Mourinho as he tries to bring improved form to United in the Premier League.

Jones was signed by Sir Alex Ferguson from Blackburn Rovers for £16.5m in June 2011 but despite his natural talent and ability to play in a number of positions has made only 92 Premier League starts in five years.
