Default Re: Manchester United's Class of 2012-13 vs. Class of 1998-99

6 Things It Will Take for United to Win the Treble Again

Whisper it, but Manchester United have as good a shot as they've had in a heck of a long time to replicate their famous treble win in the 1998/99 season.

A few weeks ago, I have to admit I wasn't feeling as confident:

Quote:
We haven't even made it through one round of the FA Cup yet and there's already talk of a treble?? #ManUtd

— Max Towle (@MaxBentleyTowle) January 16, 2013
But with qualification to the fifth round of the FA Cup secure and a date with an increasingly fragile Real Madrid looming in the Champions League, I, like many fans of the Red Devils, am cautiously optimistic that it could happen this year.

Naturally, multiple things would have to happen for Sir Alex's side to win it all again, six of which are listed here.

Just don't go shouting about it from the rooftops...yet.

No Injuries

An obvious one to kick us off, but a requisite necessary for Manchester United to triumph on all fronts come "squeeky bum time."

During the first half of the current season, injuries robbed Sir Alex Ferguson of several of his key players for extended periods of time.

Wayne Rooney, Nemanja Vidic, Anderson, Shinji Kagawa and Antonio Valencia have all spent time on the sidelines, with the latter yet to regain his best form as a result.

If Rooney or Vidic, or even Robin van Persie or Michael Carrick were to go down hurt between now and May, I would seriously fear for the Red Devils' chances across the board.

Let's hope the worst is behind us.

Efficient Width

As previously mentioned, Ecuadorian winger Antonio Valencia has had a patchy season to date to say the least.

But fellow wide men Ashley Young and Nani have hardly been models of consistency either.

With the clinical finisher Robin van Persie to aim at, one would hope that a few more accurate crosses could make it into the penalty area.

Full-backs Patrice Evra and Rafael have stepped up in improving their attacking influence, but the onus must fall on those ahead of them.

On the flipside of the coin, Evra and Rafael must both improve their defensive awareness—the Red Devils have long looked like a side afraid of a decent crossing team.

Figure out How to Beat the Best

Manchester United haven't made a significant statement against one of the continent's top clubs for quite a few years now.

Spanish side Barcelona instantly come to mind in this respect, and their dominant victories over the Red Devils in both the 2009 and 2011 final.

Some said Sir Alex was tactically outmatched by Pep Guardiola on both occasions, others that his side were simply outplayed by a better team. I would argue that both statements hold an element of truth.

With the Blaugrana currently firing on all cylinders, if United are to triumph in Europe's elite competition, a clash between the two seems inevitable in the later rounds.

There is also the potential challenge of the Bundesliga's best—Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich—not to mention the impending showdown with Real Madrid.

Better Concentration

An alarming trend that started last season has carried into this term, threatening to derail the Red Devils on numerous occasions.

United seem to struggle to play quality football for the full 90 minutes of games, often getting overrun by sides they really shouldn't have problems against.

Reading have scored three against them, as have Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United at Old Trafford.

The team has conceded far too many goals in the first 10 minutes of games, while the side has often allowed their opponents back into the game when in a winning position.

This seems a rather petty complaint considering the club's current league position, but it is an unsustainable trait that needs to be resolved as soon as possible.

Clutch

Late-game heroics have defined the recent history of Manchester United Football Club.

The Red Devils are a team that never knows when it's beat—a team that doesn't stop playing until the final whistle is blown.

There will be moments of adversity for Sir Alex's side in the months to come, it's about what they do in those moments that will make all the difference when all is said and done.

The club has the quality to pull through—renowned clutch players such as Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez can be relied upon to come up big in the waning moments of games.

We fans would love it if United did things the easy way, but we know that will never be the case.

Moments of Magic

OK, so this one doesn't really need to happen, but if Manchester United are to win it all this season, several moments of magic are surely destined to happen.

1998/99 was one of the most highlight reel-worthy seasons for any club in the history of the game.

There was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's late winner against Liverpool in the FA Cup, Ryan Giggs' transcendent goal against Arsenal in the same competition and the Roy Keane-inspired comeback over Juventus in the Champions League.

Not to mention Teddy Sheringham and Solskjaer trumping Bayern Munich at the death of the UCL final in the most memorable three minutes ever played.

If the Red Devils are going to do it again in 2013, brace yourself for a wild ride.

Back in August, Sir Alex Ferguson compared Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney, Danny Welbeck and Javier Hernandez to the iconic strike quartet that led United to their famous treble in 1998-99. Ferguson told reporters:

Five months on, United's goals tally would suggest Ferguson's foursome are realising his vision. United have scored 79 goals in 34 games, and are on course to beat their haul of 128 in the 1998-99 campaign.

Rooney, playing deeper, has been involved in 22 of United's goals this season, while Hernandez has latched upon his occasional chances like the ravenous Little Pea we came to know in his first season. Van Persie's contribution has been nothing short of astounding—the Dutchman having scored 22 goals in all competitions for United since joining from Arsenal in the summer.

With three parts of four in place, Welbeck's argument has yet to get above a whisper. The 23-year-old has scored just once in 14 starts for United this season. His frequent deployment in midfield, or as a wide man in a three behind the main striker, dilutes some of his goal threat, but Welbeck's four assists also reads as a disappointing number.

In a straight comparison with the 1999 vintage, Van Persie is probably closest to Sheringham. There's no call for blistering pace when you can read the same as intuitively as these two, and Van Persie—like Sheringham did in his heyday—operates with an economy of movement that lulls defences into a false sense of security.

The difference, of course, is that Van Persie is United's main weapon this season. Sheringham was a largely a peripheral figure in the 1998-99 season, making just 11 starts, until he demonstrated his knack for timing with successive goals in the FA Cup final and Champions League final.

Cole and Hernandez are also an obvious match. Two instinctive finishers with pace and intelligent movement, their best work is done on the shoulder of the last defender. These are snipers who wait in the wings and make a living inside in the six-yard box.

Rooney, in his all-round play, penchant for the spectacular and ability to adapt to different positions, is most like Yorke. The Englishman is a more intense character, which works both for and against him at times, but there's no doubting the two players share a mutual vision for a pass and a finish. Yorke top-scored for United in 1998-99.

That brings us to Solsjkaer and Welbeck. The former made 17 starts and 20 substitute appearances in the 1998-99 season, but still managed a return of 18 goals—the most famous his winner in the Champions League final against Bayern Munich.

Solsjkaer was technically more sound than Welbeck and a far better finisher, but he lacked Welbeck's searing pace. Moreover, he was a developed player by then, while Welbeck is still very much learning his craft under Ferguson at Old Trafford.

Welbeck's potential is obvious, but we find him this season some way behind where the baby-faced assassin was on his way to achieving immortality with an outstretched leg in Camp Nou.

That said, in his current form you'd swap Van Persie for any for any of the four who came together in 1999. If you had to pick the strongest foursome from the eight names mentioned, I'd go for Van Persie, Rooney, Yorke and Cole. The difficulty would be asking two of those to sit out every game.

In terms of the battle between the foursomes of 2012-13 and 1998-99, we should reserve judgement until United get to work against quality Champions League opposition. Yorke and Cole terrorised Barcelona, Inter Milan and Juventus on their way to the title. Van Persie and Rooney have two legs against Real Madrid to stake their claim.

The 1998-99 quartet are still some way ahead right now, but if United's 2012-13 take on the fantastic four start dining out at Europe's top table, Welbeck finds some form and United come upon a little luck along the way, we may very well be back here in May making a very serious comparison.

The fact we're even having the conversation suggests Ferguson is onto something. Whether it's something special, remains to be seen.

Tergantung tolak ukurnya sih..

We'll see....

Sir Alex: Squad stronger than '99
Report by Nick Coppack

Squad rotation will come into full effect over the next month, as Manchester United continue to challenge for trophies on three fronts.

Twelve points clear at the top of the Barclays Premier League, in a position of advantage at the halfway point of an absorbing Champions League tie with Real Madrid and still in the FA Cup, the Reds’ season is progressing exactly how manager Sir Alex Ferguson would have liked.

But with United about to embark on a run of five fixtures in 20 days, beginning with Reading’s visit to Old Trafford in the FA Cup fifth round on Monday night, Sir Alex knows he’ll need to call on all his first-team players to ensure the squad remains fit and fresh.

“I’ll make some changes on Monday,” he said. “It will be a different team. And it will be a different team again against QPR, a different team at Norwich, a different team against Madrid.”

Sir Alex has, of course, won all three major trophies once before, in 1999. And although the manager insists he’s not thinking about a potential repeat of the Treble – “at this moment in time I am just looking at winning our next match,” he insisted on Friday – he admits the Reds are better equipped to win multiple trophies now than in 1999.

“The squad I had then is not nearly as strong as the squad I have got today. But the reality is that we should not get carried away," he said.

“When we went to the Champions League final in 1999, Roy Keane and Paul Scholes were suspended, but Henning Berg was the only injury.

“I had to pull in a player, Jonathan Greening, who had only played once or twice in the first team. He got a medal for being on the bench. That gives you an idea of the strength of the squad.

“Now I could change a whole team. We have a whole group of internationals who weren't involved on Wednesday.”

Although Sir Alex will make a number of changes for the Reading tie, he insists United won’t take anything for granted against a Royals side that has lost just once in the last seven games.

He added: “In the FA Cup, anything can happen. You don't want to be a shock. Monday, in many people's eyes would be, 'Yes, it's Reading, we have just beaten Madrid... Monday will take care of itself'.

“Monday can't take care of itself. We have to take care of that. We must get a performance off the players that respects our opponents and also the fact the FA Cup can produce shocks. We have had them ourselves. We don't want one on Monday night.”

Lah, siapa yg blg gw gak setuju :p

Kalau soal trophy itu memang tolak ukur paling utama, masih ada sisa 3 bulan kedepan, just wait and see.
