Default Re: Midfielder - What We need ?

Has Ole got the guts to drop Paul Pogba for good? Solskjaer left out Manchester United's £89m man and saw Bruno Fernandes shine in his preferred position

* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made changes for Manchester Utd's 4-1 win at Newcastle
* Changes included Paul Pogba and Mason Greenwood for Juan Mata and Fred
* The changes paid off as United controlled proceedings during most of the game
* Pogba's exclusion from the off shows Solskjaer's mettle as United manager

It looked like the kind of team selection that gets a manager a response or moves him towards the sack.

On this occasion, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer came out on the right side of it and has now left himself with the biggest question of his time in charge at Manchester United. Is he brave enough to build a team without Paul Pogba in it?

This was a much-improved performance from Solskjaer’s United. Yes, the opposition were meek but still had to be beaten once they had been given a goal start. United did it comfortably and with a little style in the closing moments.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made changes for Manchester United 4-1 win at Newcastle on Saturday. Paul Pogba (above) was one of the five players dropped for the victory at St James' Park

Pogba, though, did not start the game and was not fundamental to any of it, while the bloke playing in his preferred position was front and centre once again.

Put simply, Pogba would like to play where Bruno Fernandes plays. He wants to be the player who links the back to the front, who makes key passes in the final third, who gets ahead of the play to score the occasional goal.

The Frenchman is good at it but his problem is that Fernandes is currently better.

Two into one does not always go, no matter who you are. When United signed Juan Sebastian Veron from Lazio for around £30million two decades ago, the Premier League awaited his impact. He was some player at his prime, the Argentine.

Pogba was a second-half substitute but is stuck in Bruno Fernandes' shadow at Man United

It seemed like the signing of the summer by Sir Alex Ferguson, keen to turn his team’s 1999 Champions League triumph into a period of European dominance.

But Veron flopped at United and it was not because he was a bad player or that he didn’t try enough or care enough. No. He flopped because United already had a player called Roy Keane doing all the things Veron liked to do.

United didn’t need two such players and, faced with the challenge from a newcomer, Keane was never going to lose that battle.

I remember travelling to Switzerland to see Veron play for his country around that time. He was imperious. Every single thing Argentina did went through him.

He must have touched the ball dozens of times. Back at United, he looked lost, a passenger almost. In the end, he was sold.

So back to Pogba. The only way the 27-year-old imposes himself on Solskjaer’s team is by adapting.

He has the intelligence and vision and physical attributes to be a very good holding player and the route to that role is blocked only by Scott McTominay, Fred and Nemanja Matic. Hardly titans of the modern game.

But the word is that Pogba does not want that role. He wants the other one. So we will see what Solskjaer does now.

Certainly, this was a plucky approach from the Norwegian in Newcastle. Clearly still irritated by his team’s 6-1 surrender at home to Tottenham two weeks ago, he made five changes to his team. It looked like a gamble.

Parachuting Fred and McTominay into the line-up looked like a backward step, as did handing a starting shirt to Juan Mata.

Scott McTominay (left) continued his good United form with another good display in midfield

United often look rather pedestrian when that trio play and here they were already hampered by the absence through injury and suspension of the rapid Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial respectively.

United played well, though. They defended stoutly when they had to — Harry Maguire was excellent — and then passed the ball well enough in the final third to open up a Newcastle defence who lacked the courage — or maybe the instruction — to press them.

Marcus Rashford seemed to relish the responsibility that came with the absence of his two attacking partners, while Mata’s use of the ball was exemplary. If the Spaniard, 32, was a yard quicker, what a Premier League player he would have been.

Marcus Rashford (left) and Bruno Fernandes (right) impressed by scoring in the Newcastle win

Fundamental to the night was Fernandes, though. Compelled to deny reports from Portugal last week that he already has doubts about Solskjaer, he played here as though he had a point to prove.

Fernandes brought energetic rhythm to this United performance. He missed a penalty but his persistent quality ensured his team got the win they deserved late in the game.

Pogba was given 20 minutes off the bench as United chased and won the game but it is unlikely he will put up with that for long.

It seems that Solskjaer’s mettle as a coach is about to be properly tested.

lapangan tengah 'lebih hidup' tanpa kehadiran Pogba, Tominay juga lebih padu jika diduetkan dengan Fred ketimbang Matic cmiiw
tapi mungkin Pogba disimpan buat laga UCL vs PSG

Default Re: Midfielder - What We need ?

Jamie Carragher adamant that Manchester United CANNOT function with Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes in the same team: 'It's not a midfield that can play together and NEVER will be'

* Paul Pogba was left on the bench for Manchester United's draw against Chelsea
* Bruno Fernandes started the game in a midfield with Fred and Scott McTominay
* Donny van de Beek was also on the bench and has only played 61 minutes so far
* Jamie Carragher reckons that United can't play Pogba and Fernandes together

Jamie Carragher has strongly insisted that Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes are unable to play in the same team for Manchester United.

The Frenchman was on the bench for United at the weekend, as the Red Devils were held to a goalless draw with a midfield of Fernandes, Fred and Scott McTominay.

With new signing Donny van de Beek on the bench as well as the more defensive Nemanja Matic, it meant United had a £170m worth of midfielders left sat on the bench at Old Trafford.

Paul Pogba (left) was on the bench against Chelsea while Bruno Fernandes (right) started. Jamie Carragher said that he believed Pogba and Fernandes cannot play together for United

Carragher said on Monday Night Football that Pogba and Fernandes can't play together and that he 'doesn't understand' the signing of Donny van de Beek.

He said: 'I actually admire (Ole Gunnar) Solskjaer for putting Pogba on the bench.

'I said a few weeks ago after the Crystal Palace game, Fernandes and Pogba is not a midfield that can play together and never will be.

'Van de Beek, I don’t understand the signing, I really don’t get it, how he was ever going to play or where he's going to fit in.

'As soon as he signed I thought he plays number ten, Fernandes plays there, Pogba can play there.

'It's actually better for the team having Fred and McTominay in there. But having Fred and McTominay is not good enough for Manchester United to win the league either.

'The problem for me is Paul Pogba, I’ve said it for a long time. I’m with Gary (Neville), Fernandes is the man for that number ten position but I don’t know how Ole can not pick a £90m signing in Pogba, it's difficult for a manager, so at some stage he will get back into the team.'

Fred and Scott McTominay were chosen ahead of Pogba and van de Beek for the Chelsea draw

Co-pundit Neville added that Fernandes has not played as well when in a midfield with Pogba or van de Beek.

However, he insisted it was too early to say Fernandes and Pogba can't play in the same team.

'Ole’s had six months to get Pogba and Fernandes together,' the former Manchester United defender said.

'I don’t think they’ve been in the position where they’ve played together that much so we can write it off already. If United’s results don’t improve with them both in the team then fair enough, but it’s too early.

'Bruno, when he’s with Fred and McTominay, when they play together they haven’t lost a game. I think Ole’s looked at it this week and said let’s get back to basics, I know these three can play together.

'We were a mess pre-international break giving up chances left, right and centre. Beaten 6-1 at home by Tottenham, lost to Crystal Palace who looked comfortable, Brighton away we were fortunate. He’s thought we need to get a foundation and he’s done that with those three players in midfield.'

Default Re: Midfielder - What We need ?

Fred was once seen as a £52m flop and Scott McTominay's ability was questioned, but now Manchester United cannot do without either - and that's bad news for Paul Pogba and Donny van de Beek

* Manchester United appear to have finally found some resolve in their midfield
* Fred and Scott McTominay have formed an important partnership at Old Trafford
* The pair have previously had issues at Old Trafford, but have now come good
* World Cup winner Paul Pogba is being kept out, as is new boy Donny van de Beek

As the acclaim poured in once again for Bruno Fernandes following his man-of-the-match display against Everton, there was evidence to suggest that Manchester United's real heroes at Goodison Park were being overlooked.

Yes, there were two goals and an assist for the Portuguese and a return to the kind of attacking display that saw him heralded as a revelation after joining the club in January, but there was another detail, too. One that was not missed by his manager.

That was the performance of the two men behind him, a solid platform that appears to provide United with the base from which to attack the rest of the season, and give Solskjaer the breathing space he needs in a bid to stave off questions over his own future.

Fred (centre) and Scott McTominay (right) have put in strong displays against big opponents. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have finally found a midfield partnership to settle United this season

Fred and Scott McTominay both caught the eye for United in their win on Merseyside, and not for the first time this season.

Their presence in the middle was a world of calm away from the disastrous Wednesday night in Istanbul, where Nemanja Matic and Donny van de Beek had stood in during an embarrassing defeat. And Solskjaer was only too aware of the difference.

'Scott and Fred have done brilliant together,' he told reporters after the 3-1 victory.

'They're a great partnership. Of course, they didn't start during the week. Scott played 45 minutes in Turkey but you can see they have fresh legs.

'With Bruno's goals, Scott and Fred with that energy and in that engine room are always key for us so our creative players can go on, create chances, show their magic.'

That has been one of United's major problems this season, and Ole feels like he's solved it.

With the stars at his disposal you would have hoped the Norwegian would have been able to find a solution sooner or later.

It's just that the identity of his two midfield saviours would not be the ones picked out of a hit parade.

For so long, Fred has appeared an outcast at Old Trafford, the weight of his £52million price tag in signing from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2018 proving too much on occasions.

Fred appears to finally be living up to the £52million price tag that United paid back in 2018

Claims had been made that the transfer only went through because Jose Mourinho feared he would not be afforded the chance to sign any other midfielder, as opposed to the Brazilian arriving on any form of merit.

Only last month, former Premier League striker Troy Deeney detailed the glee with which a Manchester United teamsheet was met should it possess the No 17 on it, such was his propensity to dither on the ball. That no longer appears to be the case.

So, too, has McTominay shed the inconsistency of his earlier years at United. The Scot broke into the first team under Mourinho in 2017, but his early success was tempered by questions over his ability to start for a top club week in, week out.

Now a fully-fledged member of the first team, there is no questioning his quality or work ethic, with the 23-year-old a key member of Steve Clarke's Scotland squad who qualified for Euro 2020 earlier this week.

McTominay has previously had his ability questioned, but is outperforming all in the middle

As well as Saturday, the pair have been at the heart of United's best displays this season since the chastening 6-1 defeat by Tottenham at home.

Paris Saint-Germain were dispatched in the French capital with the duo at the centre of United's midfield, while Fred's performance against RB Leipzig was lauded and McTominay joined the fray with Marcus Rashford to finish the demolition job on the Germans.

The pair also started United's biggest league win of the season so far, when Newcastle were beaten 4-1 at St James' Park.

The poise they bring to the team can be seen in United's equaliser at Goodison. Both McTominay and Fred were involved as the team strung together 20 passes before Fernandes headed home.

It was the second-highest sequence of passes leading to a goal during this Premier League campaign. United also hold the longest sequence, too, with McTominay involved in the 21-pass move that led to Aaron Wan-Bissaka scoring against Newcastle.

The reason behind the pair starting becomes clearer, too, when you delve into the comparisons between United's midfielders.

Comparing Fred and McTominay with Paul Pogba, Matic and Van de Beek, the Brazilian and Scotsman between them lead in near enough every statistical category.

McTominay has created more chances than any of the five, delivering 1.48 per game on average.

The Scot also has more interceptions at 2.21 per game, while Fred has made the most recoveries at an average of 9.45 per game.

Paul Pogba has struggled to find his way into the Manchester United starting line-up of late

Donny van de Beek has yet to fully integrate into the squad since joining from Dutch side Ajax

It is the defensive side of their game that makes them so indispensable, and which gives Pogba and Van de Beek a tough time breaking into the current set-up.

The £89m Frenchman's problems on the field have been well documented, while constant speculation surrounding his future give the impression of a player not long for Old Trafford.

Van de Beek, a major £40m purchase in the summer, has struggled for game time so far, having only played 76 minutes in the Premier League.

Nemanja Matic has been relegated to a bit part with Fred and McTominay starring

As a more attacking threat, a regular position could be hard to come by for Van de Beek while McTominay and Fred provide a defensive platform for Fernandes.

Matic possesses those defensive attributes too, but his game time has been limited this season, with Solskjaer using the Serbian sparingly.

Instead, the Norwegian appears to have found his solution in the middle of the park and a base to drive the team both up the pitch and up the table.

Default Re: Midfielder - What We need ?

Paul Pogba has FINALLY handed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a headache he wants to have after leading Manchester United back to the top of the Premier League... but will the Norwegian opt for solidity rather than flair in midfield for Liverpool showdown?

* Paul Pogba's winner at Burnley took Manchester United to the top of the league
* They now face Liverpool having gone three points clear of their arch rivals
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could revert to a diamond formation in search of solidity
* But it had mixed results in 2020, leaving the Norwegian boss with a conundrum

Probably for the first time this season, Paul Pogba has handed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer a headache he does not mind having to deal with.

The French midfielder capped a fine display against Burnley on Tuesday with a sumptuous winner for Manchester United to take them top of the Premier League for the first time since the 2012-13 season.

It continued what appears to be a remarkable resurgence from the 27-year-old following comments from his agent Mino Raiola that his time at Old Trafford will be over at the end of the season.

Paul Pogba netted the winner for Manchester United at Burnley to take them top of the league. His sweet goal capped another fine display in his return to form under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. His resurgence has come after agent Mino Raiola claimed his time at the club was over

Yet whether or not that assertion still stands, Pogba's main focus will now be the club's biggest game of the season so far, when they take on the team that they have just replaced at the top of the pile in arch rivals Liverpool on Sunday.

But despite his - and the club's for that matter - recent excellent displays, will Solskjaer think twice before opting to change tactics and add solidity rather than flair when facing the attacking menace of the Anfield side?

The team that the Norwegian put out in the 1-0 win at Burnley was designed for a specific purpose, to combat the physical game-plan employed by the hosts. It was a big United team. Eric Bailly was at the back, Pogba and Nemanja Matic occupied the middle, and Edinson Cavani was handed a start up top.

By the same merit, the Norwegian will have to ring further changes to help United counter the pace of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane and the wizardry of Thiago Alcantara in the middle.

But the best manner in which to do that is not so immediately forthcoming.

Solskjaer has played Pogba and Matic together recently but may try to add further solidity

Scott McTominay - full of confidence after captaining and netting in the FA Cup third round win against Watford - and Fred could bring more energy to the midfield, and it is likely to be in addition to, rather than instead of, Pogba.

But that would in all probability lead Solskjaer back to the diamond formation that had mixed success throughout 2020, particularly when the pressure was on the Norwegian boss.

The system worked very well against RB Leipzig in the Champions League with a 5-0 thrashing, with United showing some signs of stability at the back while looking like they could score with most attacks.

But they were insipid and uninspiring a few days later in the home defeat by Arsenal, while a 1-1 draw at Everton last season was also another frustrating display which saw the faithful raise concerns about the diamond formation.

Against the German side, Matic occupied the base of the midfield well, something Fred was unable to do to the same effect against the Gunners having started on the right of the diamond against Julian Nagelsmann's men.

Bruno Fernandes would start as the most advanced midfielder if he reverts to a diamond

Pogba would fit in on the left but, like United, had mixed fortunes when playing there in 2020. He assisted against RB Leipzig but fouled Hector Bellerin in an abject display against Arsenal

Pogba himself was positioned on the left-hand side of the diamond and Bruno Fernandes, as he did against the Gunners, will start as the most advanced midfielder at Anfield after becoming the linchpin in United's turnaround with 15 goals and nine assists already this season.

If Solskjaer reverts to the diamond, Pogba and Fernandes' roles are less likely to alter but it is who accompanies them to the side and behind them which will be of greatest concern given performances using the system in the last calendar year.

McTominay started on the right-hand side of the diamond in both of the Premier League matches but was counterproductive by stifling Aaron Wan-Bissaka's attacking threat which is particularly critical given the lack of a wide right forward in the formation.

Fred has looked slightly more comfortable in that role with Matic at the base, but the Brazilian was perhaps even more convincing as one of two midfielders with the Serbian at Anfield last year.

Fred could add solidity and put in a 'top' performance at Anfield last year, according to his boss

Solskjaer described Fred's performance as 'top' in the 2-0 defeat in January last year after being deployed centrally in a 3-4-1-2 formation.

Moreover, whether the former United striker would really be able to churn the best out of Pogba in a diamond is also questionable and could well halt the momentum he has built up in recent weeks.

He recorded an assist playing on the left of a diamond against Leipzig but was the player to foul Hector Bellerin for Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang's penalty in a more abject display against Arsenal.

There are however signs that Premier League audiences could well see the best version of Pogba for around 18 months in the coming weeks, having figured more recently with two other midfielders, particularly since Raiola's bombshell comments on December 8 last year.

A consistent period of fitness has helped his cause and has seen him complete 90 minutes on five occasions since the comments, and domineering performances like the ones United fans had come to expect following his £89million move from Juventus in 2016 were plain to see against Aston Villa and Burnley.

Scott McTominay (left) has been ineffective on the right and has stifled Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Such dominance from the World Cup winner could see Solskjaer favour attacking flair rather than defensive solidity if he believes the ruthlessness of Pogba and Fernandes will be too much for Liverpool to handle, particularly if Fabinho is forced to drop back into defence once more.

United have failed to win any of their matches against the so-called 'Big Six' this season, and excusing the exceptional circumstances of Anthony Martial's red card against Tottenham, they have lacked drive and energy against the others and failed to score against Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester City.

With arguably the toughest side they will face this season up on Sunday, Solskjaer's options ultimately boil down to whether reverting to the diamond formation will cause significantly more harm to their chances of winning than the 4-3-3 formation that has worked wonders in recent weeks.

But Solskjaer will know the attacking flair of Pogba could dent Liverpool's title ambitions

The safer option to counter Liverpool in the best possible manner would be to position Matic at the base of the diamond, with Fred and Pogba on the left and right and Fernandes operating as the attacking midfielder.

That temptation may be hard to resist given it is United who now have the advantage of being at the top of the table, and a draw would preserve that three-point lead and make a slight dent in Liverpool's aspirations of retaining their crown.

Yet if United's stars are to replicate their ancestors' achievements of famously fulfilling Sir Alex Ferguson's promise to knock Liverpool off their perch this time around, the usual three-midfield option could inflict a defeat that will raise the belief of the United fanbase of a first title since 2013 and a first trophy for four years.

penampilan Pogba dibeberapa pertandingan terakhir sudah membaik, Ole jadi pusing nih menurunkan lini tengah melawan Liverpool akhir pekan nanti. feeling sih yg sudah jadi jaminan Bruno & Pogba, tinggal duetnya saja sama Tominay, Fred atau Matic. tapi kayaknya Pogba-Tominay lebih oke, mereka berdua berpeluang mencetak gol dari second line. jika United juara PL nanti bisa jadi malah Pogba bertahan atau malah beneran pindah karena sudah 'membayar hutangnya' membawa United juara PL

Default Re: Midfielder - What We need ?

Manchester United's central midfield has a miserable lack of creativity, with the likes of Fred and Scott McTominay under fire... but are their top-six rivals suffering from the same problem?

* Manchester United's failure to break down compact teams has been criticised
* Gary Neville claimed only Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba are capable of it
* Fred and Scott McTominay have been savaged for poor attacking contributions
* The likes of Manchester City and Leicester are blessed with creative options
* Here, Sportsmail runs the rule over the current top six and their midfielders

Manchester United have been found guilty far too often this season of struggling to break down compact teams, prompting Gary Neville to insist his former club 'need fantastic players' like leaders City.

The problems stem from the heart of midfield at Old Trafford. It may even stretch all the way back to the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson. The sight of United probing from side to side, with a painful lack of incision, has left some supporters numb.

There was, admittedly, a slight improvement in the tight win over West Ham in their most recent Premier League game. David Moyes, returning to his old stomping ground, set out his team to play with a low block, and United were left to hammer away at the wall.

Scott McTominay was heavily involved in the only goal of the game, having challenged Craig Dawson in the air for his unfortunate error, but failed to inspire alongside usual midfield partner Fred.

Paul Pogba is a notable absentee, however, and Bruno Fernandes has single-handedly changed the direction of the club since his arrival. These are the two names hard to criticise, with United an inferior team without them.

The other players available to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in that area of the field often reek of a lack of creativity, however, and are a stark contrast to their leading men.

Gary Neville has openly questioned the creativity of Manchester United's midfielders, including Scott McTominay (above), amid a dismal lack of creativity, goals and assists

Fred has come under fire for a failure to create, or score, many goals since joining for a big fee. Fred has attempted a total of 78 shots in the Premier League but has scored just one of them

'You know how Man United are, they struggle to break down teams,' Neville said. 'They've got to be better against teams in those deep blocks with 10 men behind the ball. That's where the next stage is.'

There can be no doubting the effort and energy of Fred when United are defending or pressing high, but his inability to hit the target continues to frustrate.

He has mustered 78 Premier League shots in total. How many goals, you ask? Just one.

This season, his 21 attempts have resulted in only five testing the opposition goalkeeper. They often balloon horribly into the stand, and Solskjaer was even seen having a laugh at one particular effort against Chelsea.

As for McTominay, his tally of four goals and one assist this term points towards a player who was a striker in his youth days.

His finishing ability is impressive, but, just like Fred, his failure to unlock defences is laid bare most weeks.

They are reliable performers and the trustiest of servants in the big games - but no more than that.

For a United team often blessed with swagger and direction at its heart, the two are a solid, albeit underwhelming, combination in a sea of top-flight wealth.

The likes of Juan Mata, Nemanja Matic and Donny van de Beek have had to settle for bit-part roles, meanwhile.

This group can boast just three assists between them, and a single goal, this campaign.

Donny van de Beek has endured a frustrating first season at Old Trafford and is now out injured

Neville was correct to glance across to the other half of Manchester when looking at how United can improve.

'Man City have five or six players. If two are injured, someone else can unlock the door,' he told Sky Sports. It's difficult to disagree.

The soon-to-be champions are relentless scorers under Pep Guardiola - and have recovered from their rough patch last year to plunder more than ever.

Kevin De Bruyne has five goals and 11 assists in the top-flight at this point. His tally will only increase as the weeks pass and City's grip tightens on the trophy.

Behind him, in his absence, a host of other City players have stepped up to the plate.

Ilkay Gundogan has surprised many with his exploits, and his 12 goals for the season have seen him become an integral player at the Etihad.

Youngster Phil Foden, lauded by many and held in the highest esteem by his manager, has netted six goals and recorded five assists.

The list goes on. While United depend heavily on the brilliance of Fernandes and (less regularly) Pogba in the middle, City are blessed with an assortment of riches there.

They are all versatile, fluid and look confident when bearing down on the opposition box.

Their march from the doldrums and to the top of the table has made their creative ranks the most feared in the land - although Leicester may hope to run them close.

Brendan Rodgers' high-flyers have scored 53 goals this term and delivered another five-star performance against basement club Sheffield United in their most recent Premier League game.

Jamie Vardy, of course, is the talisman at the centre of all the team's success, but his intelligent sprints in behind still have to be picked out by team-mates.

The likes of Youri Tielemans, Harvey Barnes and James Maddison are all capable of dropping in inch-perfect passes - and chipping in with goals themselves, too.

Belgium international Tielemans has six goals and three assists to his name and it is little surprise that several elite clubs in Europe are reportedly interested in him.

Barnes has netted nine goals and teed up a further four, while Maddison's eight goals and seven assists have been key to Leicester's renewed Champions League push.

Slightly below them, Chelsea sit in fourth spot - and have found goals notably harder to come by since Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard.

Jorginho, N'Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic are consistent performers, but lack the cutting edge and imagination of the finest Premier League midfielders.

They have six goals between them, however, with all coming from penalty-taker Jorginho.

Kai Havertz has found himself pushed forward into a No 9 role in recent weeks, meanwhile, after notably struggling to influence himself in games in a deeper role.

Despite scoring just once in the top-flight, the signs are there that the playmaker will eventually re-find the form that saw Chelsea swoop for him.

Fellow new arrival Hakim Ziyech has also endured a difficult first season in England - leaving the majority of the creative burden in the team on Mason Mount.

Having blossomed under former boss Lampard, the 22-year-old is enjoying a rich vein of form. He has scored five goals and fashioned four others.

West Ham, Tottenham, Liverpool and Everton are on the outskirts of the Champions League places but do remain in contention.

Despite their surprisingly limp display at Old Trafford, the Hammers have caught the eye this campaign - and owe much of their success to a handful of talented midfielders.

Tomas Soucek's formidable aerial ability, and his welcome knack of keeping the ball under pressure, helps the team break from one end of the field to the other.

Pablo Fornals and Manuel Lanzini have also impressed behind the frontman.

It is arguably Jesse Lingard, who arrived on loan in January, that has injected the most impetus into Moyes' ranks, though.

Tottenham and Liverpool's midfields have pretty miserable creative returns in truth, which is perhaps not surprising for teams so reliant on Harry Kane and Son Heung-min in Spurs' case, and the famous front three of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah in Liverpool's.

Sixth-placed Tottenham's most creative midfielder in terms of assists is a defensive midfielder, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who has three - which is perhaps a damning indictment on those playing in front of him. Record signing Tanguy Ndombele has three goals but only one assist.

Fallen champions Liverpool, down in seventh place, have no midfielder with more than one assist. Star summer signing Thiago has neither a goal nor an assist to his name.

Meanwhile Georginio Wijnaldum, who is set to leave for Barcelona this summer, is their top midfield goalscorer with just two.

Though Everton have been plagued by mixed form, the Merseyside outfit have also shown frequent flashes of brilliance.

James Rodriguez, with five goals and four assists to his name, has dazzled after reuniting with Carlo Ancelotti.

But the Colombia international has being playing through pain for 'months', he revealed, and Everton look far more ponderous on the ball without him.

So, how do United compare up against the teams hoping to push them all the way to mid-May?

Pretty well, is the answer. They are blessed with players capable of unlocking the sturdiest of doors in Pogba and Fernandes, and have Mata and Van de Beek as options too.

It may be a lack of imagination, confidence, or even Solskjaer's tactics that are holding Fred and McTominay from contributing more going forward.

There is no doubting that, for United's objectives this season, they have good midfield resources.

The problem lies alongside Solskjaer's evidently lofty ambitions. If they are to challenge for titles and trophies again, they must, as Neville alluded to, buy big.

gak salah gelar PL musim ini jatuh ke tangan City, disaat Aguero cedera, Jesus mandul, masih ada gelandang2 yg mencetak gol & assits menggantikan peran striker. ngeri liat statistik para gelandang City, gelandang United 'cuma' Bruno doank yg oke, sama gelandang Leicester aja kalah subur

Paul Scholes urges Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to DITCH playing two holding midfielders and instead use his 'cleverest' stars Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes together... as United legend claims having a more 'dominant' centre back would help

* Paul Pogba was impressive on the left for Manchester United on Thursday
* He was taken off as a precaution at half-time having earned a yellow card
* Paul Scholes believes he has to play through the middle with Bruno Fernandes
* Man United ease past Granada and into Europa League semi-finals

Paul Scholes believes Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes need to play together in midfield to give Manchester United an extra cutting edge.

Pogba was deployed on the left again for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side in the 2-0 win (4-0 agg) over Granada in the Europa League quarter-finals on Thursday night.

He impressed before being taken off as a precaution at half-time having been booked.

Solskjaer enjoys the solidity of two sitting players in midfield but Scholes thinks Pogba needs to be redeployed in the heart of the team so he can combine with Fernandes.

Bruno Fernandes (left) should play in the middle with Paul Pogba (right), says Paul Scholes. Scholes thinks the creativity both men could bring to the middle would improve United

He told BT Sport: 'Solskjaer likes the two sitting players, I don't think there's a need for both of them, they need to get Pogba in a linking role with Bruno, if they do, it frees up another position for a forward player.

'The awareness and cleverness they both have allows each other to link up. United's two cleverest players are Fernandes and Pogba so if you can get them close together, they'll score a lot and provide goals for others too.

Pogba impressed in the first half but was brought off after he picked up a yellow card

'If they have a more dominant centre back, they could have a more attacking midfield.

'A lot of the time, United that attacking, flowing play, I think Pogba could bring that with Fernandes. If you get him in there, it frees up the left for Rashford, there's no way you'd want to play against that.

'Discipline-wise Pogba isn't always there at times but going forward he brings something different.'

Scott McTominay and Fred offer Solskjaer a safety blanket in front of the defence and Pogba has at times been questioned in his work going back towards his own goal.

The Frenchman's form has been superb of late so it will be intriguing to see how his manager uses him between now and the end of the season.

Saul Niguez is the 'perfect fit' for Manchester United and Declan Rice would be a 'massive addition', says Rio Ferdinand as he urges his old side to sign another midfielder

* Rio Ferdinand believes Manchester United should strengthen their midfield
* United have already signed Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane this summer
* But Ferdinand thinks Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could make another addition
* The former defender said Saul Niguez and Declan Rice would be the 'perfect fit'

Rio Ferdinand has urged Manchester United to sign a midfielder before the end of the trasnfer window and claimed Saul Niguez would be a 'perfect fit' while Declan Rice would be a 'massive addition'.

United have already splashed out £73million on forward Jadon Sancho and £42m on defender Raphael Varane, but Ferdinand thinks Ole Gunnar Solskjaer still needs more depth in his midfield.

Atletico Madrid star Niguez and Hammers' man Rice have both been linked with a move to Old Trafford in the past and Ferdinand insisted both players would strengthen his former side.

Rio Ferdinand has urged Manchester United to strengthen their midfield before the end of the transfer window. Ferdinand believes Atletico Madrid's Saul Niguez (left) and West Ham's Declan Rice (right) would both improve his former team

'I think if the right player becomes available for the right price, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will go and get him,' Ferdinand said on his FIVE Youtube channel.

'The problem is who is out there and who could be a good fit? Saul Niguez would be a perfect fit and he's asking price was £160 million ($221m) a couple of years ago, now it's more like £40-50m ($55-69m).

'In today's game that's a decent price for someone like him who has Champions League experience. I'm a big fan of his. If you can get him in this window, I think you do it.

Speaking on his FIVE YouTube channel that Declan Rice would also be an astute addition

'I think Declan Rice would be a massive addition to this squad. I'm a massive fan of his. I would love to see him keep progressing.

'He was brilliant for England in the summer. I think if West Ham keep him they've done unbelievably well. I think he does well staying at West Ham or if he goes.'

Solskjaer said more signings would be a 'bonus' but didn't rule out the possibility of further business.

‘I think anything from now is a bonus,’ Solskjaer told BT Sport after his side's victory over Leeds on Saturday. ‘I can’t say we’re going to do more.

‘You never know in football, but that would be a bonus.’

Meanwhile, last week Gary Neville said United still need a centre forward and said the club should be going all-out to get Harry Kane.

'I would want to see a centre forward,' Neville said on Sky Bet's The Overlap Live Fan Debate, when questioned about how United can further improve their team.

'Chelsea have gone and bought (Romelu) Lukaku, City are after Kane and got (Jack) Grealish. We got (Jadon) Sancho and (Raphael) Varane and they are good signings but I don't think it's enough.

'For me, I'd be going all-out to get Kane at Old Trafford. All-out. If City are going to buy Kane, why can't we get Kane? We can compete.

'Last year we said we needed a centre forward, a right winger and a centre back. if they got Sancho, Varane and Kane they would have a great chance.'

Default Re: Midfielder - What We need ?

Man United's midfield creativity woes hurt them as they drew at St Mary's - Fred isn't the answer, Van de Beek never plays and Pogba's looked his best on the left... so, how DOES Solskjaer solve it without sacrificing Sancho, Rashford and Co?

* Roy Keane said Man United lacked creativity in midfield against Southampton
* United struggled to carve out clear opportunities as they limped to a 1-1 draw
* Paul Pogba has been playing his best from the left of midfield so far this season
* But Solskjaer faces a selection headache when Sancho and Rashford are both fit
* He needs to solve his creative issues in midfield without losing stability

Picture it: Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is staring attentively trying to figure out who to play in midfield as loads of difficult math equations come in and out of focus around him.

It's easy to imagine that is how Solskjaer spends most of his Saturday mornings, isn't it.

If Sunday's draw at Southampton highlighted anything, it was that Solskjaer still hasn't quite solved his midfield conundrum.

Roy Keane insisted afterwards that Manchester United are lacking 'creativity and quality' in the middle of the park.

Now most things Keane says can be taken with a pinch of salt, and given it didn't exactly hinder United the week before, when they stuck five past Leeds, it's perhaps a little over the top to suggest they haven't got quality players.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer needs to work out who his two best central midfielders are. United were accused of lacking creativity in the middle after being held by Southampton

But Keane's assessment touched upon a key issue that has been bedeviling Solskjaer for some time and that is who to play in the two central midfield areas.

In United's first game it was Scott McTominay and Fred who were given the responsibility. On Sunday against Southampton, it was Fred and Nemanja Matic.

That has allowed Solskjaer to play Paul Pogba on the left and give him attacking freedom in the opening two games this season, but what happens when Marcus Rashford is back from injury and Jadon Sancho is ready to start?

Playing the two defensive-minded midfielders clearly thwarted United against Southampton, despite them still having Bruno Fernandes, Pogba, Mason Greenwood and Anthony Martial to provide that creative spark.

Solskjaer has played Pogba centrally alongside a more pragmatic midfielder in the past, but the Frenchman's never quite looked as impactful and dangerous from that deeper position and has been at his best in the past few weeks.

The United boss isn't overstruck on the idea of playing Pogba centrally either, because he can be a defensive liability at times.

So how does he accommodate Pogba, without sacrificing his best wingers, and address his issues in central midfield all at the same time?

Roy Keane claimed United were short of quality in the middle of the park at St Mary's. Solskjaer played two defensive midfielders, with Fred (above) partnering Nemanja Matic

It's a fine balancing act and far from straightforward, but Solskjaer will need to find a resolution one way or the other. That could mean dipping into the market for a more reliable holding midfielder who could compliment Pogba and give him a license to go forward, or perhaps tweaking United's formation.

United have no serious interest in pursuing a midfielder right now though. Rennes' Eduardo Camavinga is on their radar but is close to joining Paris Saint-Germain.

The general consensus from most United fans is that they can do away with one of the more defensive midfielders when they play teams who are expected to sit back against them, I.e. Southampton.

That could then allow Solskjaer to start Pogba in central midfield and pick someone like Rashford, Sancho or Lingard to operate from the left. Or if he kept Pogba out wide, Donny van de Beek, as disappointing as he has been in his brief Old Trafford career so far, gives him a more exciting option to throw in alongside either Fred or McTominay.

Not that Solskjaer appears to see it that way. Despite a promising pre-season, van de Beek looks like he's in for another year warming the bench.

Paul Pogba looked dangerous again from the left but may have to drop into midfield to help solve United's creative problems. Playing Pogba in central midfield would allow £73m signing Jadon Sancho to start on the wing

Donny van de Beek is an exciting option in midfield but he seems destined to stay on the bench

Although Solskjaer would rather use Pogba in a more attacking area, he is undoubtedly their best playmaker option in midfield and playing him centrally would create space for Sancho or Rashford to start out wide.

That may be United's best way to negotiate the problem, even if it requires Solskjaer to reconsider his view on starting Pogba in central midfield, as it would also enable them to stick with the 4-2-3-1 formation.

However Solskjaer goes about it, sooner or later he'll have to settle on a midfield pair because he's been chopping and changing it ever since he took over three years ago and it can't be productive.

It's no secret that many feel United's weak link is in central midfield. United legend Keane has reiterated on numerous occasions that he feels they cannot win the league with Fred and McTominay as their starting midfielders.

On the weekend, he was critical of Fred's role in Southampton's opening goal after he accused the Brazilian of not committing to a challenge.

'Fred and Maguire have to do more when someone comes into your area,' Keane told Sky Sports.

'Fred, you've got to be ready to nail him and he just dangles a leg. He's unlucky with the deflection but he's got to do more, he's got to do better than that.'

Bare in mind Fred was playing instead of a more creative centre midfielder to provide United's defence protection.

Mason Greenwood did manage to grab a goal back in the second half, but bar a 10-minute spell afterwards, Southampton were relatively comfortable in seeing out the rest of the match to earn a draw.

A few hours after that match at St Mary's, a bit further north United's title rivals Chelsea were putting Arsenal to the sword. Romelu Lukaku was the man-of-the-match as he marked his second debut for the club with a goal.

'Lukaku is that final piece of the jigsaw for Chelsea,' Gary Neville said ahead of that game. He doesn't look wrong.

If United fail to compete for the league again this season, it will be because Solskjaer was still fiddling around with the final few pieces.

'That's exactly where they will fall short': Roy Keane criticises Manchester United's players AGAIN after win at Wolves as club icon questions whether 'hit or miss' midfielders including Fred and Paul Pogba would start for Manchester City, Chelsea or Liverpool

* Roy Keane has reiterated his unimpressed take on Manchester United's midfield
* The club legend hammered Fred for his lack of quality and slammed Paul Pogba
* Scott McTominay, Nemanja Matic and David de Gea also came in for harsh words
* Keane said United have no automatic picks following their narrow win at Wolves

Roy Keane has savaged Manchester United midfielder Fred and raised questions over Paul Pogba as part of his latest unimpressed assessment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's squad.

United legend Keane has warned that boss Solskjaer's best midfield options are 'hit and miss' and suggested that none of the players who featured in the 1-0 win at Wolves in the Premier League on Sunday would start for title contenders Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool.

The unforgiving pundit told Sky Sports: 'If you look at a lot of the top teams, you automatically go with the two or three players they've got, whereas Man United can be hit and miss.

'Pogba going in there today – for all his talent, you've got question marks over him defensively.

'I don't want to mention Fred again because I seem to be on his case all the time. But sometimes, I think if you're going to play in central midfield for a big team and a big club, you have got to hang your hat on someone to say he's brilliant at going forward or he's brilliant defensively or he's got a goal in him, or he's a great athlete. I don't see any of [those qualities] in Fred.'

The seven-time Premier League winner's withering appraisal echoed his remarks after United were held at Southampton a week earlier, when he blamed Fred and defender Harry Maguire after the Brazil international scored an own goal to gift the Saints the lead.

Keane accused United of having 'not enough creativity, not enough quality' – and that proved the case again at Molineux as they needed Mason Greenwood's somewhat fortuitous 80th-minute winner to secure victory.

Manchester United legend Roy Keane has criticised midfielders Fred (L) and Paul Pogba (R). The iconic United midfielder did not mince his words when asked about his current successors. Keane also fears that goalkeeper David de Gea could cost United despite keeping a clean sheet

Discussing the players who could cost United points, the former club captain pinpointed No1 David De Gea and voiced his concerns about two more midfielders in Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic.

Keane said: 'I think McTominay has got a chance of being that player, Matic, you know… would any of these players get in the Man City, Chelsea or Liverpool teams?

'I don't see it so I wouldn't know what their best combination is – so that's a problem.

'I think that's exactly where they will fall short and still I know he's done well today and he's getting a few plaudits… the goalkeeper.'

Has Ole found his midfield fix? Arsene Wenger believes under-fire Solskjaer may have a solution to team's balance issues - and tips Fred, Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes to face Liverpool together

* Manchester United fought back from 2-0 down to win 3-2 against Atalanta
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's United side are enduring a period of inconsistent form
* But Arsene Wenger was impressed with United's midfield in the second half

Arsene Wenger believes Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have stumbled across a solution to his midfield conundrum in the 3-2 comeback win over Atalanta.

Solskjaer started with a midfield base of Scott McTominay and Fred and benched Paul Pogba but United endured a disastrous first half and fell 2-0 down to the Serie A side.

Pogba entered the fray for McTominay in the 66th minute with United trailing 2-1 and Wenger was impressed by what he saw in the midfield trio of Fred, Bruno Fernandes and the France international.

Speaking as a pundit on beIN SPORTS, former Arsenal boss Wenger said: 'Pogba, I thought, did well. Pogba gave them more power out from deep in midfield by creating more dangerous balls.

Arsene Wenger was impressed by Manchester United's second half midfield against Atalanta. Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes helped United fight back to defeat the Italian side 3-2

'And when Pogba came on Fernandes became better. Fernandes had a poor first half, but in the second half he came alive as well.'

And regarding Fred's contribution, Wenger added: 'I would personally highlight the second half for Fred.

'Fred saved a few crosses in the box, defensively outstanding and he worked unbelievably hard in the second half.'

Wenger's comments come as United boss Solskjaer is facing growing scrutiny over his position as manager.

Wednesday's victory was yet another dramatic comeback with Ronaldo getting United out of jail, but Solskjaer's side are winless in three Premier League matches.

Fred also produced an encouraging second half display to help United record a victory

They host second-place Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday, knowing a defeat would leave them seven points behind Jurgen Klopp's side after only nine league games.

But the United boss is in optimistic mood after the Champions League win, saying: 'Tonight was a massive result.

'We got off to a slow start with the Young Boys game and, if we’re being honest, the red card has changed the game so that was disappointing.

'We didn’t play well against Villarreal, but we got the three points and dug in and I think tonight was a special night in terms of the togetherness, the spirit, the fight that we showed in the second half to keep believing and to keep pushing.'

They will take on a Liverpool side spearheaded by Mohamed Salah who is in the form of his life, with some even saying he is currently the best player in the world.

United legend Paul Scholes didn't share Solskjaer's optimism and said he felt fearful of his old club coming up against a better side if they replicate the standard of their first-half display against Atalanta.

And Scholes felt starting with two midfielders was an error on Solskjaer's behalf.

Paul Scholes fears United would get punished against Liverpool - who they face next. Scholes was unimpressed by United's starting midfield two of Scott McTominay (left) and Fred

'You celebrate every win, the first half really worried me, people say I am miserable, but I looked at that game thinking about Liverpool at the weekend and playing Manchester City [on November 6],' Scholes said. 'If you play two central midfielders against them, it'll be three or four-nil and you aren't coming back'

'It was great seeing all the shooting and crosses in second half, but that first half worried me. They showed great spirit but they conceded so many chances, quality players make sure you don't win that game.

'Will they play that well against Liverpool? Imagine Jurgen Klopp at home rubbing his hands together watching that first half.'
