Default Sheffield/Wales Striker to Appeal Rape Conviction

Evans to appeal over rape conviction

Sheffield United and Wales striker Ched Evans is to appeal against his conviction for raping a 19-year-old woman in a hotel room, his lawyers said on Tuesday night.

In a statement posted on the club website, law firm Brabners Chaffe Street said that the 23-year-old striker, jailed for five years for the sex attack, "maintains his innocence'' and would be appealing against the jury's verdict.

"Mr Evans firmly maintains his innocence in this matter and as such, we confirm that Mr Evans will be appealing the decision,'' the firm said in a statement posted on the club's official website.

Evans was jailed at Caernarfon Crown Court last Friday after being found guilty of raping the woman at a hotel in North Wales last May.

He admitted having had sex with her, but the woman told the jury that she had no memory of the incident - and the prosecution argued that she was too drunk to consent to sexual intercourse.

Port Vale defender Clayton McDonald, 23, who also admitted having sex with the victim, was found not guilty of the same charge.

Sheffield United defender Connor Brown has been suspended by the club for comments he made on Twitter following the trial.

The Blades' reserve-team player responded to Evans's five-year prison sentence by tweeting various comments in relation to the case and his support for his team-mate.

Meanwhile, North Wales Police are conducting an investigation after the victim of the rape was named and subjected to abuse on Twitter and other websites.

Nih videonya si pengecut yg sempet ngeramin timeline :p
Saking senengnya sampe masuk lapangan dan pukul si Kirkland, bukan bogem tp keras bgt kyknya..

Dipukul Fans, Kirkland Pikirkan Anak Perempuannya

Rio Ferdinand ‏(@rioferdy5): Wow, watching the Sheff Weds vs Leeds game....that fan is a disgrace. Shocking. Been a good game too.

Gary O'Neil (‏@Gazoneil): Wow what have I just seen on my tv! Absolute disgrace. #leedsfan

Kyle Walker (‏@kyle28walker): The fan could have had anything on him great goal ruined but a silly man. These things should happen anymore

Phil Neville (@fizzer18): Can't believe what I've just seen in the Sheffield wed vs Leeds game!

EPL Promotion Watch: Cardiff, Crystal Palace Drop Points While Boro Wins

It was a wild weekend in the Championship with two of the top six clubs in the table losing, while a third club settled for a draw.

Of the clubs that fell on Saturday were league leaders Cardiff City, who lost at home to last place Peterborough United.

The loss was the first of the season at home by the Bluebirds, who had won their first 10 matches at the Cardiff City Stadium.

Rudy Gestede scored in the 89th minute for Cardiff but they were unable to comeback and keep their unbeaten home record.

Luckily for Cardiff, their main competitors for the top spot in the table, Crystal Palace, could only muster a draw on the road at Birmingham City. Glenn Murray scored his 19th and 20th goals of the season before Birmingham equalized with two second half goals.

The Eagles are now two points behind Cardiff for the league lead, but they are just one point ahead of Middlesbrough.

Middlesbrough scored two goals at the end of the second half to capitalize on the shortcomings of the top two.

Marvin Emnes converted a penalty in the 89th minute before Scott McDonald clinched the victory with a goal in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

Hull City also gained ground in the table by recording their third straight win against Huddersfield Town. The 2-0 home victory was powered by goals from Robert Koren and David Meyler .

The biggest losers on Saturday were Leicester City, who lost to sixth place Millwall, 1-0.

The Foxes were a top candidate for promotion early on in the season but they have only won two of their last five matches.

Millwall solidified their sixth place spot in the table after Chris Taylor scored in the 67th minute to give the Lions a crucial victory.

The Lions are now two points ahead of Watford and three points ahead of Brighton, Derby County and Nottingham Forest for the final spot in the promotion playoffs.

Here is how the Championship table looks after 22 matches.

The top two clubs are automatically promoted to the EPL, while the clubs in places three through six will play a four-club playoff to determine the third club that will play in the top flight next season.

Club Points Goal Differential
Cardiff City 44 15
Crystal Palace 42 15
Middlesbrough 41 10
Hull City 41 7
Leicester City 37 16
Millwall 36 5

Blackburn manager Henning Berg 'storms out' of party over wig prank

Guardian staff
guardian.co.uk

No festive cheer for struggling Blackburn
The Blackburn Rovers manager, Henning Berg, reportedly stormed out of the club's Christmas party after he was made to wear a Michael Jackson wig and dance on stage.

Berg, who has led the club to only one win in his nine games since the club's owners Venky's appointed him to replace Steve Kean, was attending the party on Monday for players and 200 staff at Ewood Park, which it was hoped would lift morale.

The incident reportedly took place when a club executive volunteered Berg to go up on stage with the DJ.

Berg was first encouraged to wear a Christmas stocking and dance in front of the crowd, at which point he is said to have become "visibly angry". When someone then tried to put a Michael Jackson wig on his head, he reportedly ripped the stocking off and left the stage.

The Daily Mail said Berg "made his excuses to guests at his table before making an early exit".

In a statement, Berg said: 'On Monday evening, the club arranged its official Christmas party for all employees and staff. We have many hard-working employees and this was an opportunity for them to relax and enjoy themselves after what has been a difficult year.

"After the dinner I was asked to go to the stage, which I was happy to do, believing I would be asked a few questions or maybe judge a competition.

"Instead I was asked to do things which were not the right things for me to do as the manager, considering our league position and form. I did not want to do it and went back to my table. Later, I left the event at around 9.30pm, as planned, and drove home. The players left straight after dinner and no alcohol was consumed."

With Blackburn 15th in the table, speculation has mounted over the manager's position. However, after their 2-0 defeat away at Blackpool, Berg insisted he was relaxed about his future.

"I don't know how much the players heard of what was being shouted at them by the fans, but I don't think too much about my own position."

Blackburn's Henning Berg refuses to wig out over Christmas party exit

Press Association
guardian.co.uk

Blackburn's manager, Henning Berg, was reluctant to offer further comment on reports that he stormed out of the club's Christmas party on Monday evening.

Reports said Berg made an angry exit from Rovers' annual staff event after being encouraged to wear a Christmas stocking, made to dance and having a Michael Jackson wig placed on his head.

The club sought to clarify the situation on Wednesday morning via a statement on their official website, where Berg explained: "I was asked to do things which were not the right things for me to do as the manager, considering our league position and form."

The statement added he left at 9.30pm as planned.

Speaking in public for the first time since the incident the 43-year-old made it clear he did not wish to discuss the matter further. "You've probably seen the club statement that we sent out and I think that explains how we feel about it – myself and the club," he said.

Asked whether holding a Christmas party was a wise move, considering Blackburn were relegated from the Premier League earlier this year amid a raft of off-field controversies, Berg said: "Like I said, we put a statement out.

"This was an official club Christmas party that the club normally has, it was not a players' do or anything like that. So we made a statement on it and that's it. We're thinking of football. The games are the most important things and that's what our concentration and focus will be on."

He added: "We put out the statement. That is what we will say about what happened. We're looking forward to the game against Brighton and hopefully we'll perform a little better and make a lot better result."

Leeds United confirm Bahrain-based GFH Capital are new club owners

Press Association
guardian.co.uk

Leeds United will confirm that the Bahrain-based equity investment company GFH Capital are their new owners, and will take 100% control of the Championship club. A press conference has been called for Friday morning when details of GFH Capital's takeover, for a sum believed to be £52m, will be spelled out.

A statement on the club's website on Friday confirmed the move, with the GFH deputy chairman, David Haigh – who became a director last month – to be joined on the club's board by his fellow executives Salem Patel and Hisham Alrayes.

"We are delighted, but also honoured and proud to be the new owners of Leeds United football club," said Haigh. "We have had over 4,000 emails of support from fans and we have been overwhelmed by the reaction. Everyone we have spoken to in the city has been fantastic."

GFH, which stands for Gulf Finance House, has been in protracted talks with the Leeds United chairman Ken Bates, who is relinquishing ownership, over a deal that Patel believes can reinvigorate the club.

Leeds have been outside the top flight since 2004 following financial turmoil that, at one point, instigated a fall into the third tier.

GFH has previously stated a desire to take the club back to the top flight and Patel said: "We are looking forward to a bright future. This is a fresh start for the football club and we welcome fans both old and new to Elland Road."

A new club chairman will be appointed by the new owners at the end of the season, when Bates will become club president.

GFH Capital, who first entered into talks with Leeds in May, has already transferred money into the club and is set to make further funds available to the manager Neil Warnock in the January transfer window.

Nottingham Forest owners sack manager Sean O'Driscoll

Press Association
The Guardian

Nottingham Forest have sacked their manager Sean O'Driscoll just hours after a 4-2 home win over Leeds United left them one point adrift of the play-off places. The owners, Fawaz and Abdulaziz al-Hasawi, say they have made the decision because they want a manager with "Premier League experience".

The decision to relieve the 55-year-old of his duties comes only five months after he replaced the sacked Steve Cottrell, who the owners did not want after they completed their buy-out at the end of last season. O'Driscoll, who left Crawley to take over, leaves Forest eighth in the table.

"We cannot speak highly enough of Sean as a man," the chairman, Fawaz al-Hasawi, told the club's website. "He was appointed at an extremely difficult time for the club and can count himself unlucky to have lost his job with the team just one point away from the top six. But we have a responsibility to look to the future for this great club because we have huge ambitions for it. We knew when we bought the club in the summer that it would take time for the players we bought in to settle but that process has taken longer than we anticipated.

"We feel we have developed a really strong squad of players but are still searching for consistency in terms of team performance, underlined by the fact that we have not won more than two games in succession in the Championship this season. And with the January transfer window approaching, we feel it's the right time to make a change. We are looking to bring in an ambitious manager with Premier League experience."

The Forest striker Billy Sharp, who turned the match against Leeds with two goals after they trailed to an early effort from Luciano Becchio, responded to O'Driscoll's shock sacking by tweeting "gutted, that ruins a decent day".
