WOMEN'S PLAYER OF THE YEAR: THE NOMINEES

After a record-breaking campaign for Manchester United Women as a team, it's time to pick an individual for the Player of the Year award.

The first part of the difficult process - deciding a shortlist of three names - has been done already, by the women's squad themselves.

Casey Stoney's players have put forward the following trio for you, the fans, to choose from by voting in the official app:

- Leah Galton

- Millie Turner

- Katie Zelem

Voting will close at 23:59 BST on Wednesday 8 May and the winner will be announced at Thursday's awards ceremony, which will be shown live in the official app.

Two days later, the Reds will play Lewes Women at Leigh Sports Village, to wrap up a record-breaking campaign. Stoney's side have, of course, stormed to the FA Women's Championship title this term after winning all but two of the league fixtures so far.

The title winners also enjoyed runs to the semi-finals and quarter-finals of the Continental Tyres Cup and Women's FA Cup respectively and are looking forward to facing the likes of Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea after securing promotion to the Women's Super League for next season.

LEAH GALTON - 20 APPEARANCES, 3 GOALS

An ever-present threat down the wing this season, Leah Galton arrived in Manchester with a wealth of experience from playing in the USA and Germany.

Her first strike came in our Continental Tyres Cup tie against Everton when her looping header from a Lauren James delivery fell gracefully into the net.

However, it was towards the end of the campaign when Leah hit a purple patch of form, scoring a header in a 5-1 win over fellow promotion chasers Tottenham Hotspur and providing a Goal of the Month contender when she turned Crystal Palace's defence inside out before netting from an almost impossible angle.

MILLIE TURNER - 28 APPEARANCES, 2 GOALS

A rock in United's defence, Millie Turner has appeared for the Reds in every single game this season. In her 28 appearances, the 22-year-old centre-back helped Casey Stoney's side keep 20 clean sheets en route to the Women's Championship.

Turner, who arrived in the summer from Women's Super League outfit Bristol City, also chipped in with two goals during the campaign and scored her first for the club in our 5-0 away win at London Bees in mid-September, after staying up from a corner and heading in from Katie Zelem's floated cross.

Millie would have to wait seven months for her next goal, which also came in a thumping 5-0 win; the defender rose to head home Alex Greenwood's corner from the left, in our promotion-clinching game against Aston Villa at Leigh Sports Village.

KATIE ZELEM - 25 APPEARANCES, 11 GOALS

A former Juventus midfielder, Katie Zelem has been a goal and assist machine throughout United Women's promotion campaign.

The 23-year-old from Oldham scored in our emphatic 12-0 victory over Aston Villa and went on to bag a further 10 goals. And if Katie wasn't scoring herself, the midfielder was often creating chances for her grateful team-mates.

Throughout the season, Zelem has been a set-piece specialist with her corners and free kicks more often than not leading to goals. A standout goal from Katie would be her stunning free kick against Everton in the Continental Tyres Cup which arrowed into the top corner to give the Reds a 3-0 lead against the Toffees. This strike was nominated for United's Goal of the Month for December.

Her performances on the field in the latter part of the season were recognised nationally when Katie won the FA Women's Championship Player of the Month award for April.

WHO DO YOU THINK SHOULD WIN?

While the players have picked their three nominees for the award, it's up to you to have the final say.

Vote for the Women's Player of the Year now in our official app and look out for the result in our live awards coverage on Thursday night.

GREENWOOD'S GOING TO THE WORLD CUP

Manchester United Women captain Alex Greenwood has been named in England’s squad for this summer’s Women’s World Cup.

The 25-year-old’s inclusion in former Reds defender Phil Neville’s pool of 23 players for the tournament is a reward for her outstanding debut season with United Women.

With one game to go, Greenwood has scored five goals so far and has impressed in both defence and midfield, helping Casey Stoney’s side to win the FA Women’s Championship and gain promotion to the Women's Super League.

The England squad was revealed on Wednesday morning in a unique fashion, with a group of 23 celebrity football fans helping to reveal each member one-by-one via their own social media channels.

ALEX’S INTERNATIONAL CAREER SO FAR

Greenwood was named the FA Women’s Young Player of the Year in 2012, in the same year she played at the 2012 UEFA Women’s Under-19 Championship.

Alex, who began her club career with Everton, captained England at youth level and has been part of the senior set-up since 2014, making her debut in a 2-0 victory over Italy in the Cyprus Cup in March 2014.

Greenwood scored her first goal six months later in a 10-0 win over Montenegro. Her only other goal for her country was the opener in a 7-0 victory over Serbia in June 2016 during the Euro 2017 qualification campaign; she was playing her club football for Liverpool at the time.

Alex was the youngest member of the England squad at the 2015 Women’s World Cup in Canada, where she won a bronze medal as the Lionesses beat Germany in the third place play-off.

Greenwood also helped Neville’s side go all the way in the SheBelieves Cup in the United States earlier this year.

The tournament in France begins on 7 June, with the Lionesses joined by Argentina, Japan and Scotland in Group D.

FULL LIONESSES SQUAD

Carly Telford (Chelsea Ladies), Karen Bardsley (Manchester City Women), Mary Earps (Wolfsburg); Steph Houghton (Manchester City Women), Lucy Bronze (Olympique Lyonnais), Demi Stokes (Manchester City Women), Rachel Daly (Houston Dash), Alex Greenwood (Manchester United Women), Millie Bright (Chelsea Ladies), Abbie McManus (Manchester City Women), Leah Williamson (Arsenal Ladies); Jade Moore (Reading Women), Keira Walsh (Manchester City Women), Jill Scott (Manchester City Women), Karen Carney (Chelsea Ladies), Lucy Staniforth (Birmingham City), Georgia Stanway (Manchester City Women); Toni Duggan (Barcelona), Ellen White (Birmingham City), Fran Kirby (Chelsea), Nikita Parris (Manchester City Women), Beth Mead (Arsenal Ladies), Jodie Taylor (Seattle Reign).

UNITED WOMEN SET FOR SILVERWARE MATCH

Manchester United Women will host Lewes Women in our final FA Women's Championship fixture of the season on Saturday evening (kick-off 17:30 BST).

Casey Stoney's side have enjoyed a phenomenal campaign and after wrapping up promotion to the Women's Super League and then the title in April, the Reds will finally get to raise the Championship trophy after full-time at Leigh Sports Village.

United Women go into the final-day fixture having won the last nine league games and will be aiming to sign off for the summer with a perfect 10 in a row by defeating the Rooks.

“SIGSWORTH'S GONNA SCORE”

Jess Sigsworth is United's top scorer going into the final weekend of the campaign.

The 24-year-old from Doncaster has scored five goals in her last five games to increase her tally for the season to 17. Jess hit the ground running in a red shirt, scoring five against Aston Villa, before a run of four goals in three games during October and November.

Through the winter months, our no.9 racked up one goal in 11 matches, but soon rediscovered her magic touch with a brace against Leicester City and the goals have flowed since then. With Mollie Green and Lauren James hot on her heels with 16 goals apiece, while Ella Toone sits on 15, it will be interesting to see who will ultimately be crowned United's top scorer at full-time on Saturday.

WHAT HAPPENED LAST TIME?

The Reds made light work of Lewes after travelling 260 miles to East Sussex in early December.

In a first half which saw wave after wave of pressure from the Reds, Stoney's side eventually broke the deadlock six minutes into the second half through a well-worked goal by Green.

United skipper Alex Greenwood threaded a pass down the left to Sigsworth, who then cut inside before squaring the ball to our no.8 in the area for an emphatic first-time finish.

We made sure that the points were safe when Charlie Devlin won a penalty with 10 minutes to play. Greenwood's effort from the spot was saved, but Toone was there to follow in the rebound and extinguish any hopes of a comeback from the hosts.

HOW ARE LEWES GETTING ON?

Founded in 2002, Lewes Women have risen through the levels and competed in the Women's Premier League South, now known as Women's National League South, last season. Since 2017, the Rooks have been the only club in world football to have equal playing budgets for their men's and women's teams.

After a solid fifth-placed finish in the previous campaign, Lewes gained admission into the FA Women's Championship and currently lie in ninth place going into the final round of fixtures with five wins to their name over the season.

Back-to-back victories over Crystal Palace and Millwall Lionesses has been swiftly followed by a three-game winless streak and while one last triumph on Saturday cannot improve their league position, Lewes will be eager to end their first campaign in the second tier on a high note.

JOIN THE CELEBRATIONS AT LEIGH

United Women will lift the FA Women's Championship trophy at the end of Saturday evening's match. Don't miss out on this historic moment - tickets are available now at www.manutd.com/womenstickets or by phone on 0161 868 8000 and they will also be available to purchase on the day at Leigh Sports Village. Tickets are priced at £5 for adults and £2.50 for Under-16s and Over-65s.
