United favourites on Sahara trek

AUGUST 17, 2009

Dan Robinson, Tom Bloxham from Urban Splash and Nazir Meah who are all off to the Sahara Desert

TWO Manchester United favourites, a property tycoon and hordes of Reds fans are getting ready to swap Old Trafford for the Sahara desert.

Denis Irwin and Andy Ritchie are part of the group bidding to trek 100 kilometres in November.

They will be joined by Urban Splash chairman Tom Bloxham and 25 adventurous Reds fans during their gruelling week-long expedition.

The celebrity trio hope to raise thousands for the Manchester United Foundation - which aims to provide opportunities for disadvantaged youngsters in the region.

Volunteer Dan Robinson, who works for the foundation's social inclusion project Kickz in Trafford, jumped at the chance to take part in the `once-in-a-lifetime' opportunity.

The 22-year-old United fan said: "I never expected to be going to the Sahara desert with two legends so it's a dream come true."

Dan and colleague Nazir Meah, 21, hope to raise £7,000 and their efforts were kick-started by a £3,200 donation from trustee Mr Bloxham.

Lain Ronaldinho lain pula bek Manchester United Rio Ferdinand.

Reds trio front AIDS fight

Ryan Giggs, Rio Ferdinand and Patrice Evra
have joined forces with UNICEF to front a new AIDS awareness advertising campaign in Sierra Leone.

From early in 2008, the TV, radio and billboard campaign will promote HIV and AIDS prevention in Sierra Leone's 13 districts. It will be aimed at those at greatest risk - over three million young people - by tapping into United's huge popularity in the country.

Each player will deliver one of these HIV and AIDS prevention messages:

1. Stigma: “AIDS destroys your health and kills, but so can the stigma of HIV. Stop blaming others! Stigma on HIV spreads the disease.”

2. Encouraging safe sexual practice: “Keeping my body fit and healthy is vital for my game. AIDS destroys a healthy body. Keep yourself healthy and protect your loved ones. Use a condom. Only you can stop AIDS.”

3. Getting tested: “AIDS destroys your health and kills. Knowing your HIV status will help you protect your health and that of your loved ones. Get tested for HIV - Now! Know your HIV status and live a healthy life.”

Although the number of people living with HIV in Sierra Leone stands at 1.5%, the country has seen a 75% increase in all new HIV infections since 2002. With low awareness of the dangers, and infection rates rapidly rising, the need to reach young people and encourage them to change their sexual behaviour is vital.

Dream day for supporters

The United players took time out from training recently to meet supporters with life-limiting illnesses.

The fans had made a wish to meet their idols and it was granted by charities Dream Come True and Rays of Sunshine in association with the Manchester United Foundation.

The sun kept shining while guests watched a first team training session. Afterwards they enjoyed a meet and greet with Sir Alex Ferguson and the players. Later, some fans took the opportunity to go to the museum and take a tour of Old Trafford.

Some of the fans travelled with their relatives or carers from as far away as Devon and Cornwall. All enjoyed the day, from the youngest aged 10 to the eldest at 26.

Corey, 10, who has Spinal Muscular Actophy Type II, said, "It’s been brilliant, just brilliant." His dad Matthew said, "Corey’s in awe, I’ve never seen him so quiet. He’s loved it."

Sarah, 25, who has Dentator Urbal-Pallidluysian Atrophy, loved showing off her signed United shirt. Her carer Nickie Allen added, "It’s been fab. The lads were really nice."

Natalie, 20, from Cheshire was ecstatic at meeting Danny Simpson and Cristiano Ronaldo in particular. "Absolutely amazing, fantastic, top notch!" she said, summing up her experience.

Since 2000, Manchester United has been proud to host more than 20 such events, known as Dream Days. All have been a great success, bringing a lot of joy to all concerned.

Sir Alex and Sam tee-off
MEN, Deborah Haile - 12/ 4/2008

UNITED manager Sir Alex Ferguson and former Bolton boss Sam Allardyce pitted their skills on the golf course to raise funds for a hospital and one of the region's football minnows.

The pair were among the region's soccer big guns who supported the Bernard Manning Charity Golf Classic at Mere Golf Club near Knutsford.

Some 32 teams raised funds for Radcliffe Borough FC and the North Manchester General Hospital diabetes centre.

This was the first of the golf classics to be held since Manchester comic Manning's death last June.

Radcliffe Borough director David Murgatroyd said that without the funds raised by the event the club would struggle.

Reds pledge cash for goals

Manchester United Chief Executive David Gill has pledged to match Vodacom’s contribution of R50,000 (approximately £3300) for every goal scored in this year’s pre-season tournament in South Africa.

All money raised in the Vodacom Challenge Goals For Miracles campaign will help fund cataract operations performed through the South African National Council for the Blind (SANCB), the Pretoria Eye Institute’s Sight 4 U Cataract Project, and the Netcare Vodacom Sight For Life Programme.

Speaking at a gala dinner held in Johannesburg on Wednesday evening, Mr Gill praised the initiative and said United would be honoured to match the tournament sponsors’ generosity.

He said he also hoped it would inspire Sir Alex’s side to find the net in their third and final match, to be played in Pretoria on Saturday 26 July.

The tournament total currently stands at R150,000 after the Reds drew 1-1 with Kaizer Chiefs and defeated Orland Pirates 1-0. The two South African clubs meet on Wednesday 24 July, with the winner earning a spot in the final alongside Manchester United.

Duo visit UNICEF project

UNICEF UK Ambassador Ryan Giggs and Chris Eagles took time out from the Reds' pre-season tour of South Africa to learn about the impact of HIV/AIDS and violence on the country's children and young people.

HIV/AIDS are having a devastating effect on children in South Africa and continue to be among the biggest challenges facing the country today. Approximately 5.4 million South Africans are living with HIV (14% of the world’s total AIDS population). Over 250,000 of those are young people under the age of 15, with a further 1.5 million children orphaned as a result of AIDS.

The visit enabled Ryan and Chris to see for themselves the kind of work that has been funded by the ‘United for UNICEF’ partnership, which has raised over £2million to date and helped 1.5 million children worldwide.

The players visited the UNICEF-backed Sonke Gender Justice project in the Township of Gugulethu in Cape Town. They spent the afternoon with a group of young people and took part in a lively classroom workshop aimed at tackling the attitudes and behaviours that can lead to HIV infection.

Violence and abuse towards young women and children plays a key role in perpetuating the spread of HIV, with those most vulnerable often children who themselves have lost one or both parents as a result of AIDS related illnesses. The UNICEF backed Sonke Gender Justice programme aims to tackle this issue head on through education. By challenging traditional behaviours, encouraging greater respect for women and educating young people on safe sexual practice, UNICEF is working to give young people the knowledge they need to stem the spread of the virus and prevent new HIV infection.
