Denis Irwin believes his former side will benefit from Louis van Gaal's decision to organise Manchester United's US pre-season tour.

Van Gaal was unable to have a real say on United's hectic tour of America ahead of the 2014-15 campaign due to his commitments with Holland at the World Cup.

However Van Gaal has ensured this summer's tour of North America involves less travelling ahead of the new season and Irwin insists that can only help United's first team stars.

Irwin, speaking to Manchester United's official website, said: 'Last year he came in late because of how well the Dutch team did at the World Cup so it wasn't his tour in terms of preparation.

'This time he's been able to organise it himself, organise the distances we travel, where we stay, where we train and also organise having the matches four days apart.

'His preparation is unique because of the amount of detail there is to it. He'll be looking forward to it and the way the games are with Barcelona and PSG as the final two means it'll get tougher as the tour goes on, but the players' fitness will also improve so the set-up will be exactly how the manager wants it.

'I've been impressed by his organisation and preparation for games throughout his first season. I've been impressed by a lot of things really and we've progressively got better.

Manchester United manager Louis van Gaal wants the club's youth team players to prove they can make the grade by giving them a chance on the pre-season tour to the United States.

While the Dutchman is trying to bring in more signings in addition to that of Memphis Depay, who has joined from PSV Eindhoven, he wants those further down the ranks at Old Trafford to push for contention to join his squad.

'I shall take a lot of youngsters with us to the USA,' said van Gaal, whose team will play four matches against Club America, San Jose Earthquakes, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain in next month's International Champions Cup.

'They have the chance to show themselves and then we shall wait and observe how they can develop.

'You get your chances always, especially in pre-season and, when you grab that chance, you have maybe the possibility to join us next season.'

United's Under-21s won their league last season and while Van Gaal recognised that success he believes a greater achievement will be to have at least one player from the youth ranks regularly make it to first-team level.

'A championship for the second team is fantastic but I think one player every year in the first-team as a line-up player is much more important,' he told manutd.com.

Meanwhile, Andrew Cole wants to see his former club make some more high profile signings in the mould of Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema.

'I like him,' Cole said of Benzema. 'He's a very good player and played at the highest level for years.

'He's done it at international level and (you) look at that and say that could definitely work, him and (Wayne) Rooney.'

Cole, the second-highest goalscorer in Barclays Premier League history, called on Van Gaal, armed with a £150m kitty, to bring the world's elite to Old Trafford this summer.

'That's what the fans want,' he said. 'If Man United have got £100-200m to spend and there's talk of (Gareth) Bale, then that's what the fans want to see, that's the X-Factor, for people to say "wow".

'Man United has always been that kind of club, (you) always want big name players to come here and fans get buoyant about it.'

He has managed Barcelona and Bayern Munich - but Louis van Gaal says he is 'amazed' by how big Manchester United are.

The Dutchman has revealed he has been stunned by the size of the Old Trafford club ahead of their tour of the United States and added that he got a taste of things to come on their trip across the Atlantic last season.

More than 109,000 fans packed Michigan's Big House to see United take on Real Madrid and Van Gaal, who joined the club after leading the Netherlands to third place in the World Cup, admits he was taken aback.

'That was unbelievable,' he said.

'It was the first few days of my managership in Manchester and the way of the enthusiasm of our fans and the amount of numbers was unbelievable.

'We have played four or five games there (in the US) and there were 300,000 fans in two weeks.

'Of course (in Michigan) they were also watching Real Madrid but most of them were in red shirts. It's amazing.'

Van Gaal has witnessed life at the German giants and the La Liga champions but he thinks United is a different proposition - and says he gets a reminder of that on a regular basis.

'When I drive to the Aon training complex I think there are 100 people who want me to sign a shirt or a photograph and most of these are from Asia,' he explained.

'It is unbelievable how popular Manchester United is.'

United will take on Barcelona in the US and Van Gaal is looking forward to a reunion with old friends from the Nou Camp.

'I have to say they play still with players I have coached but that's nice,' he said.

'Also a lot of the staff is remaining there. I think it is nice to see those people again.'

United, who will be based in Seattle and San Francisco, will also play Club America, Paris St Germain and San Jose Earthquakes.

But Van Gaal knows which game is the most important.

'Last year (on tour) we have won very single game,' he said. 'Good results, attractive football, but for me the most important match is the first match of the Premier League.'

Manchester United move pre-season game against San Jose Earthquakes to smaller stadium as Louis van Gaal looks to cut squad travelling time while in the USA

Manchester United have controversially moved one of their pre-season tour venues at the last minute after manager Louis van Gaal made yet another move to cut down on squad travelling time during the club's visit to America next month.

Van Gaal was famously angered last summer when he discovered the pre-season tour schedule signed off by predecessor David Moyes involved thousands of miles of travelling across the US.

This year's tour is much more confined but now United have tweaked it again at Van Gaal's insistence less than two weeks before the squad is due to leave Manchester.

Instead of playing their San Jose Earthquakes game on July 21 at the 63,000-stadium Cal Memorial Stadium in Berkley, California, as was initially planned, United will now turn out at the much more modest 18,000-capacity Avaya Stadium near San Jose.

With United staying in San Jose during this leg of their tour, Van Gaal and United have made the decision to cut down on travelling time to and from the game. The distance between the two venues is approximately 47 miles and it has been decided not to make the round trip.

However, while this may make some logistical sense for Van Gaal and the players he felt were left exhausted by last summer's schedule, it means that tens of thousands of soccer fans in California will now not be able to see United play.

Today tour organisers were promising full refunds and offering those with tickets priority if they wish to buy seats at the new venue. However, the 45,000 difference in capacity will mean that many supporters will inevitably be disappointed.

United are expected to confirm the switch in a statement later today but earlier a news bulleting on the 'Berkleyside' independent news website in California said: 'The July 21 Manchester United vs San Jose Earthquakes game will be played at Avaya Stadium in San Jose rather than Cal Memorial Stadium, according to Wesley Mallette, Associate AD, Strategic Communications for Cal Athletics.

'Mallette confirmed UC Berkeley was informed today about the decision, made by Relevent Sports, organizers of the tournament.

'We were informed that the change in venue was made in order to better meet Manchester United's travel and logistical requirements,' he said in a statement Monday night.

'People who bought tickets to the original game will be issued a full refund and should expect their refund within 5-7 days, Mallette said, adding that specific details about refunds will be issued Tuesday.

'We have also been informed by the promoter that those who purchased tickets for the match in Berkeley will be eligible for a special pre-sale opportunity to purchase seats before they go on sale to the general public.'


Van Gaal was unhappy at the length of the pre-season tour in 2014, which was signed off by David Moyes


Van Gaal had to be persuaded to commit to another USA tour this summer after spending two and half weeks in 2014 shuttling between venues in Los Angeles, Pasadena, Denver, Washington, Detroit and An Harbor.

It is also understood that as well as a reduced schedule this time, United's players will not be asked to commit to as many commercial and sponsorship engagements while on tour. Indeed, many of United's army of commercial staff are not even going on this tour.

One reason is that United have no new kit to promote this time round as their new deal with Adidas does not begin until after this tour is finished.
