ANTHONY MARTIAL IS MAY'S PLAYER OF THE MONTH

Anthony Martial has been named Manchester United’s Player of the Month for May after a strong end to his wonderful maiden season with the club.

The forward, who last won the award in December, claimed 49 per cent of the votes on ManUtd.com and Twitter, to finish ahead of his fellow nominees Wayne Rooney (36 per cent) and Antonio Valencia (15 per cent). More than 100,000 fans took part in the poll.

Martial scored three goals during the month, finishing coolly against champions-elect Leicester City and firing a clinical double at West Ham United, to take his overall tally for the campaign to 17.

The 20-year-old was also a key figure in the Reds’ FA Cup final triumph over Crystal Palace and was unfortunate not to score, hitting the post with a header and having a goalbound effort blocked.

JESSE LINGARD WINS GOAL OF THE MONTH AWARD



Jesse Lingard’s stunning winner in Manchester United’s FA Cup final triumph over Crystal Palace was the fans’ unsurprising choice as the club’s Goal of the Month for May.

In the second half of extra time, Antonio Valencia’s drilled cross was stabbed clear as far as Lingard, who rifled a first-time volley from just inside the box into the top corner to spark joyous scenes at Wembley.

The strike was a landslide victor in ManUtd.com’s poll, picking up 76 per cent of the votes. Anthony Martial v West Ham United (8 per cent) and Wayne Rooney v Bournemouth (6 per cent) completed the top three.

"It fell nicely for me to hit; I knew I had to catch it right and luckily I did," said a jubilant Lingard after the victory, which clinched United’s record-equalling 12th success in the famous old competition. "As a substitute you’ve always got to be ready and thankfully I was."
