David de Gea set to edge out Manchester United team-mate Dean Henderson in battle to play in goal for the Europa League final against Villarreal after impressing in semi-final victory over Roma

* David de Gea and Dean Henderson have played four Europa League games
* But De Gea looks to have got the nod for the final in Gdansk on Wednesday
* The Spanish goalkeeper made many crucial stops in semi-final win over Roma
* Henderson though has been criticised for his Premier League form

David de Gea appears to have the backing from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to start in goal for Manchester United in next Wednesday's Europa League final against Villarreal.

De Gea and team-mate Dean Henderson have started four matches each since the Red Devils dropped into the competition from the Champions League group stage.

But the Spanish stopper appears to have won the race to feature in the Gdansk final, according to the MEN, having featured in the quarter-finals against Granada as well as the semi-finals against Roma.

David de Gea has reportedly won the goalkeeping battle to start for Manchester United in next Wednesday's Europa League final against Villarreal. United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may have chosen De Gea over Dean Henderson

Despite United's 3-2 defeat at the Stadio Olimpico that saw them progress 8-5 on aggregate, De Gea made a number of key saves that only strengthened his case to start the Villarreal clash.

It will come as a blow to Henderson who had featured in the earlier rounds against Real Sociedad and AC Milan.

Henderson has since been called into starting XI for Premier League duties, but this appears to have had the negative effect of giving De Gea more opportunities in Europe.

While De Gea has impressed during this time, Henderson has struggled and he was criticised for his poor positioning during a recent 4-2 defeat by Liverpool last week.

De Gea made a number of crucial saves in United's semi-final victory over Roma. Henderson though has been criticised in the Premier League, including in a recent 4-2 defeat by Liverpool at Old Trafford

Solskjaer has been rotating his goalkeepers in the top flight recently, with De Gea in goal for Tuesday night's 1-1 draw with Fulham.

However Henderson is expected to return between the sticks for the final game of the Premier League season at Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday.

Solskjaer faces an uncertain summer regarding his goalkeepers, with Henderson's future having already been unclear.

The England goalkeeper only wants to stay on at Old Trafford if he is made a clear No 1, and his axing for the clash with Fulham at least indicated that was not the case.

Solskjaer has defended his selection of De Gea on Tuesday and insists he will only make his mind up over who will start next Wednesday after the Wolves clash.

Speaking ahead of the Fulham game, Solskjaer said: 'It is David's turn to play now. Of course he has played in Europe, Dean's played most of the league games.

'For me it is about having two keepers ready for the final which is important.'

Asked if he had decided who would start the Europa League final, the Norwegian added: 'It is up for grabs. I will make up my mind after these last two league games.'

Henderson penned a new £120,000 five-year deal at Old Trafford last year but is unhappy with his lack of playing time this term and is eager to seal first-team football elsewhere.

Tottenham, AC Milan and Borussia Dortmund have shown interest, but Spurs could be ruled out by the keeper's desire to play Champions League football.

feeling sih De Gea yg bakal diturunkan di final. terus siapa tau akhirnya Ole membuat keputusan didetik2 terakhir, malah mempertahankan De Gea dan menjual Henderson

Manchester United stars 'to share £4MILLION bonus pot if they beat Villarreal in the Europa League final', with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side set for '£90m windfall from European run' ahead of summer of transfer plans

* Manchester United could bank a big prize should they win the Europa League
* It would be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's first trophy as a Manchester United manager
* Players are set to share a £4m bonus should they lift the trophy in Gdansk
* The club is set for a £90m windfall in a boost to their summer transfer plans

Manchester United stars are set to share a £4m bonus pot should they beat Villarreal in the Europa League final.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could pick up his first trophy as Manchester United manager, should they beat the LaLiga side in Gdansk on Wednesday.

And it has been reported the Red Devils players could bank a big individual prize should they get the job done.

The Sun report that the players will pick up an average of £75,000 as a bonus for winning the trophy, though some of their bigger stars like Paul Pogba will receive closer to a six-figure sum.

Solskjaer's side are also set to receive a £90m windfall from their European run once TV money comes in.

This could provide the Red Devils a huge boost in terms of their summer transfer plans.

United are highly tipped to continue their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund's England star Jadon Sancho.

They are also said to be keen in bringing Harry Kane to Old Trafford, after the striker told Tottenham that he wishes to leave the club this summer.

Manchester United players could receive a big bonus should they win the Europa League. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is looking to clinch his first trophy as a Manchester United coach. A potential £90m windfall could help them sign summer targets such as Harry Kane

United could find themselves in a race for the England striker with rivals Manchester City and Chelsea also interested.

It is also said that the club are keen to reward star midfielder Bruno Fernandes with a new deal this summer.

The Portuguese playmaker would reportedly receive a new contract worth £200,000 per week, and United are keen to finalise the arrangements of this before the European Championships this summer.

Fernandes has four years left on his current deal but the club are keen to reward him for his exceptional form since joining the club for £47m in January 2020.

The Europa League final takes place on WEDNESDAY as Manchester United and Villarreal go head-to-head with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on the hunt for silverware: Everything to know ahead of kick-off

* Manchester United take on Villarreal in the Europa League final on Wednesday
* United made the final with an end-to-end 8-5 aggregate win over AS Roma
* Villarreal booked their spot in the final with a 2-1 aggregate win over Arsenal
* The match is the penultimate club fixture this season before Euro 2020 begins

Manchester United and Villarreal go head-to-head in the Europa League final on Wednesday night in the penultimate club match of the season.

The Red Devils, who won the competition under Jose Mourinho back in 2017, come up against serial winner Unai Emery, who has three Europa League titles to his name.

Unlike the Champions League, the hopes of an all-English final were crushed as Arsenal lost to their former manager Emery, whose Villarreal side progressed with a 2-1 aggregate victory.

But there will still be a representative from the Premier League, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continued his march towards a first trophy as Manchester United manager, as his side defeated Roma in an 8-5 aggregate classic.

With the final now quickly approaching, Sportsmail takes you through the all-important information.

Manchester United and Villarreal go head-to-head for the prestigious Europa League trophy

When is Manchester United vs Villarreal?

The final of the 2020-21 Europa League, contested by United and Villarreal, will be played on Wednesday, May 26.

The match will kick-off at 8pm BST, as was the case with all four semi-finals.

The final will take place just three days before the Champions League clash between Manchester City and Chelsea, who go to battle on Saturday, May 29.

Where is the final being played?

The Europa League final will take place at the Stadion Miejski in Gdansk, Poland.

Also known as the Gdansk Stadium, the 41,000-capacity build was used as one of Poland's Euro 2012 venues, having been constructed the year prior.

It was initially scheduled to host the final last year, before the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic enforced a move to the RheinEnergieStadion - or Stadion Koln - in Germany.

How to watch the Europa League final

As has been the case throughout the tournament in its entirety, the match will be broadcast live on BT Sport.

However, unlike previous matches, BT have confirmed that both the Europa League and Champions League will be available to watch for free.

The finals will be available to watch on their website, and they will also stream the matches for free on their YouTube channel.

Both games will also be available on the BT Sport app for all small screen and large-screen devices, which ranges from smart TVs and games consoles to tablets and mobile phones.

Sportsmail will also be running a live blog, so you can keep up-to-date with us.

Routes to the final

Manchester United

Group finish: 3rd (Champions League)

Last-32: 4-1 agg vs RB Salzburg

Last-16: 4-0 agg vs Dynamo Kyiv

Quarter-finals: 3-1 agg vs Dinamo Zagreb

Semi-finals: 2-1 agg vs Arsenal

United have not had the most straightforward of routes to the final, having dropped down from the Champions League after finishing third in their group.

However, they've taken the Europa League by storm since entering the tournament, seeing off one of the tournament favourites in AC Milan, as well as picking up impressive victories over Real Sociedad and Granada.

And they were involved in undoubtedly the tie of the tournament in their semi-final clash with Roma, which finished 8-5 on aggregate, with Edinson Cavani scoring four goals across the two legs.

As for Villarreal, they've also been impressive en route to the final, particularly as they've struggled domestically.

Having topped their group, they saw off RB Salzburg, Dynamo Kyiv and Dinamo Zagreb, before claiming their most notable victory of the tournament - a 2-1 aggregate win over Arsenal.

Team news

The big question ahead of the final is who Solskjaer will pick in goal, with the Norwegian keeping his cards close to his chest at the moment.

There has been a tussle of late between David de Gea and Dean Henderson, though the former is perhaps the favourite to get the nod.

Solskjaer won't have such luxury in defence, however, with captain Harry Maguire all-but certainly out of the clash, having only recently started walking without crutches following his ankle ligament injury sustained against Aston Villa two weeks ago.

Anthony Martial is also a major doubt having not played in two months, though Solskjaer hopes he may be involved in some form, while Fred is expected to return to the side, having sat out of the Wolves clash with a minor knock.

As for Villarreal, Emery is hopeful both Samuel Chukwueze and Juan Foyth - on loan from Tottenham - will be involved, with neither player featuring since their respective injuries against Arsenal.

However, Etiene Capoue is unavailable due to a suspension, while Vicente Iborra is ruled out.

How many fans will be in attendance?

The Stadion Miejski which be just under a quarter full for the Europa League final, with UEFA making 9,500 tickets available for fans, with each spectator required to show proof of a vaccine or a negative coronavirus result beforehand.

Both sides will have 2,000 traveling fans in attendance, while 2,00 tickets will also go to the general public.

The remaining tickets will be given to the local orgnanising committee, commercial partners, broadcasters and UEFA and national associations.

Manchester United vs Villarreal: The odds

With Manchester Untied finishing the Premier League campaign in style, it comes as no surprise that they are the favourites to win the Europa League.

The Red Devils are favoured at 2/5 to lift the trophy, while Villarreal are the underdogs at 2/1.

Meanwhile, United are at 5/6 to win inside 90 minutes, while Villarreal are at 15/4.

Harry Maguire is named in Manchester United's travelling squad for Europa League final against Villarreal with club captain set for fitness test on injured ankle on Tuesday... but Anthony Martial misses out ahead of Gdansk showpiece

* Man United have revealed their 26-man squad for the Europa League final
* Captain Harry Maguire has been named as he continues to battle an ankle injury
* But forward Anthony Martial has been left out ahead of showpiece v Villarreal

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire has been named in the club's travelling squad for the Europa League final as he battles to be passed fit.

The centre-back was a huge doubt ahead of the showpiece in Gdansk against Unai Emery's Villarreal on Thursday night, but he hopes he will be passed fit in Poland as boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continues to monitor his situation.

However, Anthony Martial - who has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford - has been left out of the 26-man group looking to secure a first trophy since 2017.

Harry Maguire has been named in Manchester United's 26-man Europa League final squad. But French forward Anthony Martial has been left out of the group to face Villarreal in Gdansk

The Frenchman has been linked with a move away from United this summer, with Tottenham being mooted as a possible destination. The club are said to be interested in Harry Kane, and the forward has been suggested as a makeweight in their negotiations.

United, who are heading to Poland on Monday evening, are bidding to win the competition for the second time in the last four years. Nemanja Matic posted a photo alongside team-mate Edinson Cavani on the plane as they gear up for a crucial week.

Maguire missed the final four games of the Premier League season after picking up the niggling ankle problem during the 3-1 win against Aston Villa.

There had been doubts over Maguire's fitness after missing the final four games of the season

Solskjaer has insisted Maguire still faces a race to be fit for the final despite his inclusion, with the Norwegian set to wait until the day of the game before making a decision on whether he is fit enough. He will have another fitness test on Tuesday.

Last week he had poured doubt on Maguire being passed fit, saying he was 'steadily improving' but was still 'a long way' from moving to running in sessions.

‘He's walking but it's a long way from walking to running,’ said the United boss. ‘To be honest I don't think we'll see him in Gdansk, no, but I'm going to give him until Tuesday night and the last training session to be out there. Steadily but surely he's improving – but ligaments take time to heal.’

The defender has returned to training and Solskjaer feels he is a huge presence for the team. The Norwegian is hoping to guide the team to his first ever trophy since taking charge

But Maguire's presence in the dressing room will still be of huge importance to United whether he plays or not, with Solskjaer hailing his leadership skills.

‘He's a very important person in the dressing-room and a leader,' he added.

‘Before fans came back in you heard him from the stands. He wants the team to do well, he's organising from the stands. It's easy because it's been so quiet. He'll make sure everyone's ready for the final.’

'Does losing hurt them enough? It's almost become accepted': Paul Scholes slams Man United's mentality after chastening Europa League final defeat by Villarreal... before claiming Red Devils have become a 'NICE club' under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

* Manchester United were left stunned in Europa League final against Villarreal
* Unai Emery's side ran out winners in a dramatic penalty shootout in Gdansk
* United headed into the final as favourites against seventh-placed LaLiga side
* Following the final whistle, Paul Scholes heavily questioned United's mentality

Paul Scholes tore into Manchester United's mentality following their shock Europa League final defeat against Villarreal, claiming losing has 'almost become an accepted thing' at Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side headed into the final as big favourites coming up against a Villarreal team who finished seventh in LaLiga, but Unai Emery's men stunned their opponents to seal Europa League glory in Gdansk.

Gerard Moreno gave Villarreal the surprise lead in the 29th minute before United rallied back through Edinson Cavani but they failed to grasp the momentum and succumbed to a dramatic 11-10 defeat during the penalty shootout, with David de Gea missing the final spot-kick.

Manchester United were stunned by Villarreal in the Europa League final on Wednesday

United great Scholes was stunned by what he witnessed in Poland, and slammed his former side for becoming too nice a club under Solskjaer.

'It's difficult to come out of that game and give them credit, they weren't good tonight,' Scholes told BT Sport following the final whistle.

'Overall there has been progress. But does losing hurt them enough? It's almost become an accepted thing. From Ole's point of view, where is the demands?

'He has made progress, but this club expects to win trophies. If it gets into the next couple of years and there's still nothing he might have a problem. There aren't the demands there where he has to win.

'A few players, it doesn't hurt them. Bruno Fernandes, Edinson Cavani, they won't like it. They look like they're proper hurt, the others it can look acceptable, even from the manager. They've become a nice club.'

Former United midfielder Paul Scholes slammed the side's mentality after the chastening loss

Scholes' former United team-mate Rio Ferdinand backed up his fellow pundit on Wednesday, claiming the side 'failed' in their 'acid test' of trying to build a winning culture.

Ferdinand said: 'If you look as a whole they've improved on last season, and this was an opportunity to form part of a winning culture.

'It was the acid test tonight and the team failed. Ole tried to a create an environment to make a unit for these situations, they didn't get the job done. To be brutal, it is a failure.'

The former centre back then continued: 'They can't get over the line. Semi-finals last season, now they've got to a final but they can't get over the line to win silverware. You're not afforded time usually. They're in a position now where they need to turn finals into silverware.'

After finishing second in the Premier League, the Red Devils were expected to cap off their season with success in Europe.

But Villarreal boss Emery worked his magic yet again to seal his fourth Europa League triumph in just eight seasons.

David de Gea's missed penalty consigned United to defeat against Emery's Villarreal side

And Solskjaer's wait for his first piece of silverware as United manager goes on, and a long summer is ahead.

Following the final whistle, United forward Marcus Rashford admitted the club had passed up a great opportunity but insisted their failure will make them even hungrier heading into the new season.

'In one word, it's disappointing', Rashford said. 'But there's no chance this team will give up, we'll come back next season with a bigger desire.'

The England international then added: 'People say a lot about us going downhill. For me, the talent, ability, we have everything to compete at the highest level, we just have to show it, why we belong in finals like this, winning finals like this.

'In the league we finished second, but it counts for nothing. Man City win the league, we finish second, it means nothing.

'For us, I don't want to hear "they were so close", it doesn't mean anything. There's one winner, one loser. Next time, we have to make sure we don't lose.

'I'm 100 per cent sure we will [win trophies]. To win trophies you have to show sacrifice. I could walk you into that dressing room and I could show you five, six players who had injuries from September.

'We all work together as a unit and we fight to be successful. This year it didn't happen. We have to go away and clear our heads and start fresh. When Ole came in there was a process. The players still believe in that process and this isn't the end of the process.'

Default Re: [UEL] Final : Villareal vs Manchester United

PLAYER RATINGS: Pau Torres proved why he has suitors with man of the match display... while Marcus Rashford had a frustrating night, making the wrong final decision far too often

* Manchester United failed to end their four year wait for a trophy on Wednesday
* The Red Devils lost their Europa League final clash with Villarreal on penalties
* Emery became first boss to win Europa League or UEFA Cup for the fourth time
* Pau Torres proved why he has several suitors for the summer transfer window
* While Marcus Rashford experienced a frustrating night, making bad decisions

Manchester United failed to end their four year wait for a trophy on Wednesday after losing to Villarreal on penalties.

United struggled to break down Unai Emery's LaLiga opponents in Gdansk and were left feeling heartbroken when David de Gea missed his penalty to see Villarreal claim the trophy in the most dramatic fashion.

The result saw Emery become the first manager to win the Europa League or UEFA Cup for the fourth time and showed the world why Pau Torres has several suitors.

While Lindelof and Marcus Rashford failed to impress for Manchester United - having been responsible for Villarreal's equaliser and failing to score the winner respectively.

Sportsmail's Adrian Kajumba gives his verdict on how each player performed during the Europa League final on Wednesday evening.

MANCHESTER UNITED – 4-2-3-1
Yellow: Bailly Red: N/A

DE GEA 6

Picked ahead of Henderson. Helpless for the goal and was the unfortunate man who missed crucial penalty kick.

WAN-BISSAKA 7

Pushed forward often on his 100th United appearance. Had few issues going the other way.

LINDELOF 6

Won’t want to see opener again. Did not see scorer Moreno until it was too late.

Lindelof was responsible for the first goal as he didn't see Moreno until it was too late

BAILLY 6 BOOKED

Big night against his old club. Did okay bar one heart-in-the-mouth second-half moment.

SHAW 7

Solid defensively and more effective in attack when United stepped things up in second period.

MCTOMINAY 8.5

Plenty to do, starting as main defensive midfielder. Did not stop running, working and probing.

POGBA 7.5

Back in central midfield and started noticeably well, pulling the strings …

GREENWOOD 7.5

Involved in many of United’s best moments with some of his touches and passing.

FERNANDES 6

Frustrated and squeezed out of first half by Villarreal but had more of an influence after break.

RASHFORD 5

Frustrating night. Made the wrong final decision far too often but shot led to equaliser.

It was a frustrating night for Rashford, he made the wrong final decision far too often

CAVANI 8

Worked hard as usual and got his deserved reward when ball broke his way for equaliser.

Substitutes:

Fred (for Greenwood 100)

James (for Pogba 115)

Tuanzebe (for Bailly 116)

Mata (for Wan-Bissaka 120)

Telles (for McTominay 120)

Not used: Henderson, Grant, Maguire, Williams, Amad, Matic, Van de Beek

OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER 6.5

United largely dominated. Solskjaer inspired a much-needed improvement in second half but late changes let Villarreall regain a foothold in the game.

Referee: C Turpin (Fra) 7 - Kept control of the game well with few real flashpoints or controversies to trouble him.

Attendance: 9500
