Red face Re: Fred

Fred has long been seen as a £52m flop and butt of all the jokes about Man United... but Ralf Rangnick will love his limitless energy and his Palace winner could be the start of a redemption in red for the boy from Brazil

* Fred scored Man United's winner as they beat Crystal Palace on Sunday
* The Brazil midfielder was thrilled to settle Ralf Rangnick's first game in charge
* A £52m signing back in 2018, Fred had become a much-ridiculed figure
* The general opinion was that he worked hard but wasn't good enough for United
* Ironically, Fred has become first choice in midfield for Brazil during this time
* But his high-energy, hard pressing style will be appreciated by the new coach

Every dressing room must have one: The figure of fun, the easy target, the butt of all jokes.

For some time at Manchester United, Fred has been the most likely candidate.

In 2019, he was reportedly mocked by his United team-mates after arranging his wedding to coincide with pre-season because he'd assumed Brazil would pick him for the Copa America the previous month.

Fred didn't make the squad because of poor club form and then had to plead with manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to get the time off for his July 14 nuptials. He wasn't allowed to forget about it.

Fred celebrates his winning goal as Manchester United started the Ralf Rangnick era with a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Old Trafford last Sunday. Fred celebrates his winning goal as Manchester United started the Ralf Rangnick era with a 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Old Trafford last Sunday

Then there's social media, where the midfielder has long been one obvious scapegoat as United lurched from one disaster to another.

A few months back, someone started a Twitter thread with the question: 'What's that one thing you bought but have no idea why?' Someone replied 'Fred' and racked up the likes.

And what about the £52million man's shooting ability. A clip of Fred narrowly missing a chance against Chelsea last season went viral because TV cameras instantly cut to Solskjaer's reaction on the touchline.

The Norwegian stood there with a beaming grin on his face, applauding enthusiastically before giving the thumbs up. A smile duly spread across Fred's lips.

Was this what modern Manchester United has become? Expressions of delight at missed shots.

It was more that most of Fred's previous attempts had threatened row Z. This one was actually quite close.

The perception of Fred fluctuated from expensive flop and an unwanted relic of Jose Mourinho's reign to someone w

ho tries hard but ultimately wasn't anywhere close to United standard.

The lingering memories have been of Fred being brushed off the ball too easily, giving it away to opponents, committing needless fouls or generally not quite being good enough.

Fred walks part an unimpressed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after being sent off against PSG last year. Much of Fred's time at United has been a struggle to convince fans of his abilities in midfield

But, finally, things might be changing in Fred's favour. In Ralf Rangnick, United suddenly have a coach who values high work rate and hard pressing above anything else.

Fred - who knows how to be a real nuisance to opponents, buzzing around and not allowing a moment's peace - could well prosper.

His spectacular winner against Crystal Palace on Sunday, which capped a display of endeavour and attacking intent, could be the start of his redemption in a red shirt.

That's not to say that Fred has suddenly become the perfect midfielder overnight but Rangnick's demands of his players could work in his favour.

The Brazilian is one of several United players given greater licence to push forward and exert pressure under the new interim coach.

The average position of United's players against Palace (right) was much higher than the rest of the season (left), as they pressed their opponents aggressively. They were also narrower, creating more central passing options

Every outfield member of the side had an average position higher up the pitch against Palace compared to the previous 14 league games. Fred's was 10 yards inside the Palace half whereas ordinarily it would be in his own half.

On more than one occasion, he ghosted unmarked to the edge of the Palace box, a tactic that paid off handsomely with his well-taken breakthrough goal 13 minutes from time.

Solskjaer was guilty too often of taking a belt and braces approach in midfield, even against opposition United could easily overwhelm, with Fred, Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic kept on the leash.

As we saw from the energy of Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and even Cristiano Ronaldo on Sunday, United will now press from the front.

Fred will be expected to be a big part of that, doubling up on opponents as they try and pass their way out of defence, hustling them into mistakes and taking full advantage.

We saw a good example even before Rangnick started. It was Fred's pressing of Etienne Capoue that led to Ronaldo chipping home the opener against Villarreal last month.

Palace were certainly flustered more than once as United roared out the blocks at Old Trafford on Sunday. As Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool have found out, goals come from forcing mistakes.

Michael Carrick, who took charge of that Villarreal game and has now left the club having started under Mourinho, came to Fred's defence recently.

'It gets overlooked he is first choice in a good Brazil team - that shows how far Fred has come since he came to the club and how much he's improved,' said Carrick.

'I really like him and one of the biggest things that maybe people don't see is the attitude. His desire to be a team player, desperate to put himself out there to play games.

Michael Carrick, who served on the coaching staff under Mourinho and Solskjaer, spoke about Fred's improvement since arriving at United and admitted he was a big fan. The Brazilian will hope his winner on Sunday is the start of a redemption in red under Rangnick

'That mentality is infectious. He's improved an awful lot and brings a great energy to the team.'

You might argue that 137 games into his United career, it would be pretty shocking if there hadn't been any improvement.

But many found it incredibly hard to believe how someone so often ridiculed when playing for United had become first choice for Brazil since that 2019 snub.

Fred started all but one of their games at this year's Copa America, though was taken off at half-time during the final with Argentina having been booked just three minutes in.

He will be at the World Cup in Qatar, playing for one of the most fancied teams to win the whole thing. That can take a bit of getting your head around.

But at least Fred now looks more comfortable when playing for his club. Diogo Dalot described him as 'the underdog' after his winner against Palace.

'Everybody can criticise him but he keeps his head clear and goes on the pitch, every game he gives everything that he has, and that's what this club is about,' he said.

And for all his faults, maybe that is precisely what United need right now as they scramble to salvage their season. The much maligned, much mocked Fred could yet have the last laugh.

Manchester United midfielder Fred insists he has a 'super cool' relationship with all of his team-mates despite an avalanche of reports claiming the dressing room is divided

* Fred has refuted claims that the Manchester United squad is divided
* Reports claimed that Portuguese-speaking players at United had formed a clique
* However, Fred insists the atmosphere in the changing room is as good as ever

Fred has responded to claims that there is a divide in the Manchester United dressing by saying that he has a great relationship with all of his team-mates at Old Trafford.

Reports last week suggested that cliques had been formed behind the scenes at the club, causing friction in the locker room.

The news came during in a rough patch of form for United, who had taken just five points from their three games against Newcastle, Burnley and Wolves, heaping huge amounts of pressure on interim boss Ralf Rangnick.

It also came after Ronaldo's explosive interview where he condemned many of his younger team-mates' mentality and urged them to up their game in order to finish in the top three.

But when asked about the reports of cliques forming behind the scenes, Fred moved quickly to deny the claims by saying he enjoys a good relationship with all of his team-mates.

'The news here, they like fake news. There's too much here. It's a lie,' Fred told ESPN Brasil.

Fred has rubbished claims that the Manchester United dressing room is divided. Reports suggested that there aren't any cliques in the Manchester United dressing room. The report came out during a rough spell for United on the pitch, with problems mounting

'It's obvious that we speak Portuguese, we communicate, we have a nice friendship. I'm a good friend of Alex Telles, both on and off the field. I've known him for a long time. So obviously I'm going to be a little friend of his.

'But that doesn't mean I won't talk to Lingard, Rashford, Greenwood, Maguire, the other English people here. On the contrary. We have a super cool friendship here, a super cool dressing room, they're all team-mates.

'We're always dancing in the locker room, whenever we have the team dinner. Now we're not doing that because of Covid-19.'

While Fred insists there is harmony among the players, Saturday's result against Aston Villa seems to suggest otherwise after they dropped two points against Steven Gerrard's side, throwing away a 2-0 goal lead and seeing them fail to make ground on the top four.

United face Brentford on Wednesday evening, a match that was postponed during the Covid-affected festive period.

They have two games in hand on West Ham who are currently sat in fourth having played just 20 matches, although Tottenham, who are three points above them, have played just 18 times this season.

Default Re: Fred

Fred hits out at 'STRANGE' and 'bad' decision by Manchester United to hire an interim manager, as Brazilian midfielder risks the wrath of Ralf Rangnick by insisting club need a 'long-term plan'

* Manchester United midfielder Fred has hit out at his own club's long-term vision
* Fred claims it is a 'little bit bad' United are not thinking far in the future
* The Brazilian admits it is 'strange' having an interim boss like Ralf Rangnick
* Fred's comments come just before United's European clash with Atletico Madrid

Manchester United's Brazil midfielder Fred admits it's 'strange' having an interim manager in Ralf Rangnick and has criticised the club for not coming up with a long-term plan.

Rangnick leads United into Wednesday's Champions League last 16 tie against Atletico Madrid expecting another hostile atmosphere at the Wanda Metropolitano three days after his players were attacked by Leeds fans at Elland Road.

But Fred has questioned the wisdom of appointing the German coach on a short-term basis until the end of the season, and believes United's lack of planning has left the squad in the dark.

'It's a bit strange,' said Fred when asked about Rangnick's appointment in an interview with TNT Sports Brazil. 'I know in football it's important to get good results as soon as possible, but it's also important to have a long-term plan.

'I think it's a little bit bad for us not to have one. At the moment it's all about the short-term goals. We don't know how it's going to be after the end of this season.'

United haven't lifted a trophy in five years, and come into Wednesday's encounter having won just two of 12 Champions League knockout games since last reaching the final in 2011.

Their away record to Spanish teams in this competition is even worse, showing just three wins from 22 games - not to mention last season's Europa League final defeat to Villarreal in Gdansk.

Manchester United midfielder Fred has hit out at his own club for not having a long-term plan. The Brazilian also admits it is 'strange' having interim coach Ralf Rangnick (left) at the club. Fred has defied the doubters to take up a goalscoring role in at Old Trafford in recent weeks

'Every player that comes to this club wants to win titles,' added Fred. 'It's the same with me, Bruno (Fernandes), Alex (Telles), Cristiano (Ronaldo), (Jadon) Sancho, all of us. We want trophies, but it's been a long drought.

'With all due respect to Villarreal, it was our job to win that Europa League final and we failed. It's about having a better football planning at the club. If you don't want to win titles, you don't deserve to play for Manchester United.'

However, Spanish champions Atletico are having a difficult season, and Diego Simeone's side are currently languishing fifth in LaLiga.

Danger men Antoine Griezmann and Luis Suarez are only expected to be fit for the bench on Wednesday, while Matheus Cunha and Yannick Carrasco have been ruled out due to a knee injury and suspension respectively.

Fred is expecting a battle every bit as ferocious as the 4-2 win at Leeds on Sunday, but believes United shouldn't be written off as Champions League contenders just yet.

'It wouldn't be crazy,' he said. 'It could happen but we have to work our socks off because we're far away from being one of the favourites in this competition.

'I know we're not playing our best football, but we have a lot of quality names in our squad. I see many other teams playing far off from their best as well.

'Even when not playing well, Atletico are a hard team to beat. Their manager is Argentinian, man, so they're warriors. They like a bit of a fight on the pitch.

Fred has compared Diego Simeone's squad to 'warriors' who 'like a bit of a fight'. Fred (second right) accepts he's not the best player at United but claims he tries really hard

'So it really doesn't matter if Atletico are going through a bad moment. It's a match for players that have balls, pardon my French. They're the most South American team in the Champions League.'

Fred has started to win over some of the doubters with his performances recently, and even earned praise from arch-critic Roy Keane at Leeds when he came off the bench to score United's crucial third goal.

'I've had ups and downs since arriving here,' said the Brazilian, a £52million signing from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2013.

'I know I'm not the best player, the most technical, but I give my blood and my life every time I'm on the pitch. As we say in Brazil, I carry the piano for the artists to play. Some fans like me and others don't. But football is like that, you need to learn to deal with criticism.

'I listen to constructive criticism, for sure, but there is a lot of criticism just to humiliate you. It's easy to go on social media and write anything full of hatred.'

Three days after United were pelted with missiles at Leeds, they expect Ronaldo and Raphael Varane to be targeted by Atletico fans because of their links to city rivals Real Madrid.

Ronaldo and Varane both won the Champions League four times with Real - twice beating Atletico in the final - and the 37-year-old Portugal star also became the club's record goal scorer.

Rangnick said on Tuesday: 'Mentally, we need to be prepared for an emotional, hostile atmosphere in the stadium. Some of the players will not be received with the red carpet.

'Diego Simeone is one of the most emotional managers in Europe and the style his teams have reflects those emotions he tries to bring to the team.

'We need to match the emotions and energy in both games - I will try to prepare our team for that challenge.'

Fred should just 'SHUT UP and keep performing on the pitch', slams Gabriel Agbonlahor as ex-striker lays into Manchester United midfielder for calling the club's decision 'strange' and 'bad' to hire an interim manager

* Midfielder Fred has been critical about Manchester United and his critics
* The Brazilian has hit out at their long-term planning with no permanent boss
* Ralf Rangnick is currently the interim manager until the end of the season

Manchester United midfielder Fred has been told in no uncertain times to 'shut up' and concentrate on his own performances by one ex-Premier League striker.

Fred has made several headlines over the past 24 hours following his comments to TNT Sports Brazil.

In an interview with the publication, the 28-year-old spoke at length about the structure of United as well as hitting back at his own critics.

However, Aston Villa legend Gabriel Agbonlahor has blasted Fred about the latter, telling him to concentrate on improving their fortunes on the pitch.

He told : 'Scored a goal have we, Fred?

'I just don't get it. You've had an amazing performance against Leeds, you battered Leeds, Fred scored and you have a big game tonight - stop talking!

'Get your head down, get your recovery done the next day, you're probably flying out to Madrid the day after. Why are these players talking so much? I don't get it.

'Stop talking about things you don't need to. If I'm the manager, I'm fuming.

'I just don't understand. If I'm [Ralf] Rangnick I'm thinking, "oh, here we go, another little player is talking'. Just shut up and keep performing on the pitch".'

Fred insists Manchester United players MUST avoid more dressing-room cliques and divisions between first-team stars if the club is to succeed under new manager Erik ten Hag

* Fred has said Manchester United stars need to drop the dressing-room cliques
* Last season was the club's worst in the Premier League era amid player divisions
* And Brazilian Fred has urged his team-mates to avoid a toxic team atmosphere
* The midfielder is hoping for success under new Red Devils boss Erik ten Hag

Manchester United midfielder Fred says the players need to get rid of any dressing-room cliques if the club is to rise again under Erik ten Hag.

Last season was United's worst in the Premier League era amid rumours of divisions and a toxic atmosphere within the team.

Fred warned that cannot happen again if Ten Hag is to turn United's fortunes around, but believes the Dutchman has already started to tackle the issue with 'new rules'.

Ten Hag is said to have laid down the law to his players, telling them that they have to put the team ahead of themselves.

'We have to be united,' said Fred in Bangkok on the club's pre-season tour to Thailand.

'All aspects of last season were difficult which is hard. This season with a new manager, with new rules already, we'll look to unite and stick together as that's how our team must be.

'We have to be strong, and to be strong we have to be united. We hope we can be focused and strong. Erik can help us to continue being united. For some years now we haven't won any trophies.

'Obviously something has to change to achieve success. If it's not working you have to aim to succeed. I'm certain Ten Hag is aware of this and will do his best to help Manchester United return to the top, from where they should never have left.

'It's really important for us to have a strong coach who has the last word alongside us. It gives us security and helps us a lot.

'He's very detailed in his work, he has his own fine details. All the day-to-day details. It's really good for our daily work. Everyone on the pitch has to give their all to help the team.'

Manchester United's Fred (above) says players need to get rid of any dressing-room cliques. Last season was United's worst in the Premier League era amid reports of divisions and toxicity. The Brazilian midfielder is hoping to enjoy success under new Red Devils manager Erik ten Hag

Fred acknowledged that last season was a tough experience for everyone at the club, but he has already seen enough of Ten Hag to believe he is the man to put things right.

'Last season was difficult, but that's in the past now,' added the Brazilian. 'We know it wasn't good, it wasn't what we wanted. I'm certain that Erik is here to do great things, he's here to win things.

'We really hope he can do a great job here and are fully behind him. We're looking to achieve a lot, great things, and I'm sure we'll achieve this.

'He's a great coach. Training is good, intense. We're aiming to put what he says into our daily training. I hope we can win things in the future. It obviously won't be easy, it won't happen overnight. We'll look to be doing our best as soon as possible.'

United are looking to make new midfield signings this summer to replace Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic, but Fred would welcome the competition as he prepares to start his fifth season at Old Trafford since a £52m move from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2018.

'Pogba was a great player here, unfortunately he moved on,' said Fred. 'We wish him all the best. There will always be competition. We're a big club, one of the biggest in the world.

'Players joining us will be looking to play, and those of us already here want to play, so there will be competition. It's been a great four years for me here. It's been really important for me, a club that has both embraced and helped me a lot.

'I hope to continue giving back in games, I have to do my job on the pitch. It's been an excellent four years for me, I want to continue developing more every day and I still want to win a lot of trophies with United.'

Fred says he's 'very happy' playing next to Casemiro after the duo impress for Manchester United in Tottenham win, as he claims fellow Brazilian makes him a 'better player'... before praising 'very good' big-money winger Antony

* Manchester United's Fred has said he is 'very happy' playing with Casemiro
* The duo put on an impressive showing as United beat Tottenham 2-0 yesterday
* Fred revealed he feels the Brazilian makes him a 'better player' on the pitch
* He also praised Anthony, saying he is a 'very good' player with 'big qualities'

Fred has praised Manchester United team-mate Casemiro after the pair shone in the Red Devils' 2-0 win over Tottenham on Wednesday night.

Fred, who has struggled for form since joining the club in 2018, put in arguably his best display in a United shirt next to Casemiro, who has impressed since his arrival in the summer.

Via Manchester Evening News, the midfielder said playing next to the 30-year-old 'improves' him as a player, before talking up the importance of the former Real Madrid man.

'I'm very happy playing next to Casemiro', he said. He's a big player for the Brazilian team, we've already played a long time together in that team.

Fred has said news Manchester United team-mate Casemiro makes him a 'better player'. The duo put on an impressive showing in United's 2-0 win over Tottenham on Wednesday

'It's very important being side by side with him and playing with him improves my football. A big player like Casemiro can play there and Scott McTominay is also a big player. They are both very important.

'I can't say anything about Casemiro, everybody knows his qualities and how important he is for the team, and Scott is also a great player.

United are beginning to hit form after a slow start to the season under manager Erik Ten Hag. United put in perhaps their best performance under Ten Hag in the win at old Trafford. Fred said new United big-money signing Antony is 'a very good player' with 'big qualities'

'We have big games at this club all of the time; it's a midfield where we have big players. We have to be good to help the team all the time and this is the most important thing.'

Fred also praised summer arrival Antony, who raised eyebrows when he was announced by United in an enormous £82million fee.

He scored three goals in his first three games for the club, and has made the right midfield position his own since his arrival.

'Antony is a very good player, very young', Fred added. 'He arrived and took his place in the team which is difficult.

'He has big qualities. Today he didn't score but soon he will get goals again. He's already shown he can score for this team.'

United are fifth in the Premier League table after a slow start to the season under new manager Erik ten Hag, and face Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

* Man United's Fred was 'surprised' to learn of Cristiano Ronaldo's premature exit
* Fred scored for Red Devils against Spurs, but Ronaldo went down tunnel early
* The Brazilian midfielder sympathised with his colleague due to desire to play
* He was glad the Portuguese star spoke to Erik ten Hag to make everything ok

Manchester United's Fred said he was 'surprised' by Cristiano Ronaldo's early exit from their recent match against Tottenham Hotspur, but added the 'important thing' was that the situation had been diffused.

Ronaldo left early from the Spurs game after a dispute with Erik ten Hag by refusing to come on as a substitute, and the Red Devils boss promptly dropped the Portuguese star.

However, the 37-year-old returned to the Man United side to score against FC Sheriff before getting the assist for the only goal as they beat Real Sociedad 1-0 on Thursday.

Fred, 29, has started just four Man United league games this season, and he said such incidents are part of football when players like Ronaldo and himself are determined to play as often as they can.

The midfielder, who joined United in 2018, told Brazil's TNT Sports that he didn't see Ronaldo walk down the tunnel before full-time in the Spurs match, in which Fred scored one of the goals in Man United's 2-0 win.

He said: 'I was on the pitch there. You end up getting focused, you don’t even see it. Turned out I saw it later on the news. I was even surprised when I saw it, but it happens.'

The Brazilian midfielder continued: 'It’s hard. Everyone deals in some way. It’s obvious that everyone wants to be on the pitch, they want to play to help the team. So when you end up not playing, you get frustrated.

Fred was 'surprised' when he later learned of Cristiano Ronaldo's early exit from Spurs game. Ronaldo got sympathy from his Brazilian colleague as they desire to play as much as possible. Fred said it was important that Ronaldo and Erik ten Hag spoke, and everything is now ok

'This is normal, it has happened to him, it has happened to me, to someone else. I think that’s part of football.'

Fred finished off by noting: 'I think it stayed there, we talked there, they had their conversation, he and Erik ten Hag. The important thing is that everything is ok.

'He scored again too, which is important, I hope he can keep scoring and have a great season at United.'

Manchester United's remaining fixtures before the international break are league and cup matches against Aston Villa, before a visit to Fulham.

FRED RELISHING ‘GREAT’ BARCELONA TEST

Manchester United midfielder Fred says the Reds are eager to play in the magnitude of fixture that facing Barcelona presents.

United will go head to head with the Spanish giants in February’s heavyweight tie, after the two clubs were paired together for the Europa League knockout round play-offs, during Monday’s draw.

It presents a two-legged tie that will be a strong test for Erik ten Hag’s side, but the taxing type of contest which has arguably brought the best out of them already under the Dutchman.

The Reds have overcome the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Tottenham already this season, as well as drawing at Chelsea, and Fred believes that United will be ready for another big match-up.

“We know that Barcelona is a great team,” he told club media following Monday’s draw.

“It won't be an easy game, there are no easy games in the Europa League. We were drawn against Barcelona. It will be a great game, I'm sure we are ready for it.

“We players like playing in great fixtures like these ones, and we are prepared for this game. God willing, we'll qualify for the next round.”

After the first leg at the Camp Nou on Thursday 16 February 2023 (17:45 GMT), the sides will face up against each other once more, during the return leg at Old Trafford, seven days later (20:00 GMT).

With the home fixture to come in the latter half of the tie, the Brazilian thinks that our supporters in M16 will have a big part to play, as they have done already this term.

“Our stadium has always had a great atmosphere with the fans constantly behind us,” he continued, when asked about the second leg in Manchester.

“Obviously, we haven't done as well in the last few seasons, but they have always been together with us, supporting the team.

“This season is no different; every game, the big games, they were here, and we've had some great games and victories.

“I'm sure they'll be here against Barcelona supporting us, they'll give us strength to get the win. That's why it's so important to play in front of our fans and get a result here.”

'When he comes on, he's ready and on the front foot': Man United boss Erik ten Hag hails Fred's attitude off the bench - and says the Brazilian is 'bringing the right quality' to games despite his lack of minutes

* Brazilian star Fred has struggled for minutes at Manchester United this season
* He has regularly been used as a substitute by Erik ten Hag during the campaign
* Ten Hag has praised the midfielder for his attitude off the bench this term
* He believes Fred has consistently brought the 'right quality' as a substitute

Erik ten Hag has praised Fred for his attitude despite the Manchester United midfielder falling down the pecking order at Old Trafford this season.

The Brazilian has been a regular in the first-team since arriving at United from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2018, but he has been limited to just four league starts this term, with Ten Hag preferring a midfield pairing of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen instead.

Fred has still managed to make an impact from the bench, though, scoring his second league goal of the season in United's 3-0 win against Nottingham Forest last week.

Ten Hag has credited the 29-year-old for remaining professional and taking his opportunities when they have been given to him.

'We emphasise a lot of times that we've often had players who score goals when they come on from the bench, like Fred did last week,' Ten Hag told club media.

'Every time when he's coming on, he's ready. He's on the front foot and he brings the right quality to the game.

'That is great to have that as a team and as a manager.'

Erik ten Hag has been impressed with Fred's attitude from the bench this season. Fred has consistently made an impact from the bench, and has two goals to his name this term. Fred has split opinion over the years, but is finally delivering consistently for Man United

Fred has split opinion amongst the United fanbase in recent years, with some particularly critical of his partnership with Scott McTominay in the middle of the park.

He may have finally found his role under Ten Hag, though, with his energy as a substitute proving to be a major asset for the Red Devils as the season has progressed.

Fred could be set for his first start since November when United host Everton in the FA Cup third round on Friday night.

Ten Hag looks set to rotate his squad, with United having a Carabao Cup quarter-final and derby clash with Manchester City on the horizon, and this could mean that Fred comes into the starting line-up to take on the Toffees.

Roy Keane completes U-turn on Fred hailing him for his 'lovely little finish' in Man United's FA Cup win over Reading - after icon had previously blasted the Brazilian's 'footballing intelligence' and claiming he would NEVER be 'good enough' for the club

* Roy Keane praised Fred's performance in Man United's FA Cup win over Reading
* Former United captain added he thinks Fred's best role is coming off the bench
* The Irishman has long been a detractor of the Brazil international at United
* In August he claimed the 29-year-old would never be 'good enough' for the club

Roy Keane appears to have changed his opinion on Manchester United's Brazilian midfielder Fred.

The former United captain has long been one of Fred's most vocal critics, but the 29-year-old's performance in the club's FA Cup win over Reading on Saturday appears to have begun to shift his view.

After replacing the injured Christian Eriksen as a second-half substitute, the Brazil international wasted no time getting on the scoresheet, connecting with a Bruno Fernandes cross with a sublime backheel to increase United's lead.

Speaking following the game, Keane couldn't help but praise Fred for his performance, whilst adding that the role of an impact player off the bench for Erik ten Hag's team seems to be a perfect fit.

'That's probably what I think is his role - coming off the bench, particularly in games like this when the game is done. Reading fall asleep at a corner, United have looked a bit better on set pieces recently.

He just walks in there, he's obviously got a trick, lovely little finish. Poor from Reading, but lovely little finish.'

But Keane hasn't always been so positive in his comments about the former Shakhtar Donetsk star.

After United defeated Tottenham 3-1 in April 2021, Keane offered a scathing criticism of the Brazilian's performance, despite him managing to get on the scoresheet.

Roy Keane heaped praise on Fred for his performance in Manchester United's win over Reading. The Brazil international came off the bench to score United's third goal in the FA Cup fourth-round tie. Keane added that he believes Fred's best role in Erik ten Hag's side is coming off the bench

Then, when United endured a disappointing start to the current campaign with defeat to Brighton in August, Fred, along with midfield partner Scott McTominay, once again found himself the target of the Irishman's ire.

'The [lack of] decision-making and football intelligence from midfield, particularly Fred. I've been going on about it for a long time – Fred and [Scott] McTominay are not good enough.

'They won't get Manchester United back competing at the top. We see it week in, week out. They're not up to it.'

dengan cederanya Eriksen, Fred bakal lebih sering diandalkan duet dengan Casemiro nih, apalagi performanya lebih oke dibanding Tominay musim ini
