CLUB REMEMBERS MUNICH AIR DISASTER IN BELGRADE

A commemoration ceremony was held in Belgrade, Serbia, on Thursday morning to remember those who were lost in the 1958 Munich Air Disaster.

The event was held at Partizan Stadium ahead of Manchester United contesting a fixture in the city for only the second time since tragedy struck 61 years ago.

Attendees from the club, the Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation and Sian MacLeod, UK Ambassador to Serbia, gathered in the centre circle to hear a short address from executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward.

Club legends Bryan Robson and Mickey Thomas then laid down a wreath, before a minute’s silence was held to remember the 23 people who were killed as a result of the disaster.

Executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward said:

“It was incredibly important to come here and mark the occasion. As soon as the draw happened, our attention turned to wanting to remember those who lost their lives in 1958. This was the last place, on this very ground, against Red Star Belgrade, when they played as a team together before they got on that fateful plane to stop over in Munich and tragedy struck. So for us as a club, there is a game tonight but for us the trip is also important for remembering those who lost their lives and paying respects, which we have just done by laying the wreath.”

Bryan Robson also said:

“You can feel the emotion. When you have been at the club for as long as we have, you get that history and you have met a lot of the families who have lost people in the Munich Air Disaster. I have even heard Bobby Charlton talk about the game when they were over here in 1958. It was supposed to be a great performance by the team and you can sense that when you come into the stadium.”

WE WILL REMEMBER THEM

On Wednesday 5 February 1958, Matt Busby’s United drew 3-3 against Red Star Belgrade to go through to the European Cup semi-finals. The next day, they set off from Belgrade back to Manchester. After stopping to refuel in Munich, in snowy conditions, tragedy occurred.

Twenty-three people were killed as a result of the Munich Air Disaster, including eight players, three other employees and a supporter of this great club.

The club thanks its friends at Partizan and UEFA for facilitating this ceremony and welcoming representatives from the Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation, as well as the UK Embassy. Today, we remember:

The eight journalists – Alf Clarke, Don Davies, George Follows, Tom Jackson, Archie Ledbrooke, Henry Rose, Eric Thompson and Frank Swift.

We remember Captain Ken Rayment the co-pilot, Tommy Cable, one of the stewards, and Bela Miklos, the travel agent. And those who were part of United - club secretary Walter Crickmer, chief coach Bert Wally, trainer Tom Curry and Willie Satinoff, a close friend and supporter of United.

We especially remember the eight Busby Babes who so tragically died - Geoff Bent, Roger Byrne, Eddie Colman, Duncan Edwards, Mark Jones, David Pegg, Tommy Taylor and Liam ‘Billy’ Whelan.

FOREVER REMEMBERED

The date of 6 February will forever be circled on the calendars of everyone connected with Manchester United.

On that day in 1958, the darkest day in United's history, 23 people - including eight players and three members of the club's staff - suffered fatal injuries in the Munich Air Disaster.

The team had been travelling back from a European Cup tie against Red Star Belgrade when their aircraft stopped in Germany to refuel. The first two attempts to take off from Munich airport were aborted; following a third attempt, the plane crashed.

The eight players who perished were Geoff Bent (aged 25), Roger Byrne (28), Eddie Colman (21), Duncan Edwards (21), Mark Jones (24), David Pegg (22), Tommy Taylor (26) and Liam Whelan (22). Edwards, considered by many to be the finest player of his generation, died 15 days after the accident.

The three club officials who were killed were secretary Walter Crickmer, trainer Tom Curry and coach Bert Whalley.

Eight journalists died - Alf Clarke, Donny Davies, George Follows, Tom Jackson, Archie Ledbrooke, Henry Rose, Eric Thompson and former Manchester City goalkeeper Frank Swift.

Aircraft captain Ken Rayment, fellow crew member Tom Cable, travel agent Bela Miklos and supporter Willie Satinoff, a friend of United manager Sir Matt Busby, were also victims of the terrible tragedy.

The Munich Air Disaster is an indelible part of United's history, as is Sir Matt overcoming his crash injuries to work alongside his assistant Jimmy Murphy and build another great team which won the European Cup 10 years later.

We will never forget.

OLD TRAFFORD PAYS TRIBUTE

A short commemorative service will be held on the stadium forecourt this afternoon (Thursday), enabling supporters and club staff to gather and pay their respects under the Munich memorial clock.

The service, which has been organised by the fans behind the munich58.co.uk website, will be led by Reverend John Boyers and will feature poems, prayers and songs including the famous folk anthem, The Flowers of Manchester.

The ceremony is due to start at 14:45 GMT and will be shown live on MUTV and in our free Official App.

HOW UNITED FANS ARE PRESERVING THE BABES’ LEGACY

Two years ago, the 60th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster drew the biggest ever gathering of Manchester United supporters to the site of the tragedy in Trudering, underlining just how vividly the Busby Babes remain alive in the hearts and minds of our fan base.

The ceremony at Manchesterplatz that year was organised and led by the Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation, a not-for-profit company set up by longstanding Reds. Their aim? Simply to preserve the Babes’ legacy for future generations, while raising money to help charities in Manchester, Munich and Belgrade.

“We’re just a group of diehard United fans,” explains chairman Pat Burns. “We wanted to do something really special for the 60th anniversary, because we know that in another 10 years we might not be here.

“From that, we decided to do something; to build a legacy to hand on to future generations. Because, for us, United and the Babes go hand in glove. They’re part of our DNA. They’re the reason why virtually every fan I know supports United. It’s the story we were brought up on.”

For this year’s 62nd anniversary, MMMF representatives travelled to Belgrade to present a brass plaque to the Majestic Hotel – where the Babes spent their final night – to go on permanent display in the hotel’s foyer.

The delegation then headed to Munich, where around 100-200 Reds were expected to attend the MMMF-led ceremony and watch the foundation stone for a new memorabilia showcase being laid, ahead of a two minutes’ silence and the traditional singing of The Flowers of Manchester.

But the group’s primary concern is the future. The foundation has applied for charity status and wants to spread awareness of their work.

“We raise money simply from asking United fans to support us,” says Burns. “We run an annual JustGiving appeal in January and February, raise money on the away-day coaches, and run an annual dinner.

“The support for the last dinner was amazing. We had 170 people and raised over £9,000, which is brilliant. We had Lou Macari, Arthur Albiston, Paddy Crerand, plus Harry Gregg’s daughter and Jimmy Murphy’s son – who are going to be our patrons. That’s how close-knit we want it. This whole thing is built around the Babes, the Babes’ families and United fans.”

So far, money has gone to the Depaul charity in Manchester — which helps homeless young people – and football charities in both Munich and Belgrade. The work in Serbia was undertaken at the personal behest of Harry Gregg.

“It’s great if you’re a United supporter,” enthuses Burns. “It’s even better if you know our history, where we came from, and what a pioneer Matt Busby was.

“So go to our website – see what we do to preserve that legacy. It’s part of your family; it’s part of the United family. If you like it, if you’ve got a passion for this, we are looking for the people who might follow us, who might be in their teens, twenties and thirties. We would happily talk to anybody that would like to get involved.

“Personally, I would love every United fan to know about us and for those who can to show a little bit of support. So get in touch, come to one of our dinners, donate to our JustGiving appeal. But, more importantly, learn about us and share your thoughts and ideas.”

HOW ARSENAL PAID TRIBUTE TO UNITED IN 1958

In the immediate aftermath of the tragic events of 6 February 1958, the entire footballing community came together in mourning for those lost, and in support of Manchester United in the club's darkest hour.

One of the most poignant tributes came from Arsenal, our age-old rivals who had provided the final opposition on English soil for Matt Busby’s brilliant young team just five days before their plane crashed in Munich.

The Gunners set aside two pages in the match programme for their next home game against Bolton Wanderers on 18 February, to echo the thoughts being shared across the sporting world.

Entitled 'Tribute to Manchester United', it read: “The air disaster which struck Manchester United on their way home from Yugoslavia on Thursday 6th February, 1958, is a shattering blow to English football. Seldom, if ever, has such a shock hit British sport as did this tragedy.

“Famous players and well-known sporting personalities are dead and others are injured. That much-admired and well-known team, variously known as ‘Busby’s Babes’ and ‘Red Devils’ has been shattered. Seven fine athletes in the prime of their careers have been killed and ten others have been injured, some so seriously that it will be a long time before we shall know whether or not we shall see them on the field of play ever again.”

“The Club’s Secretary and Chairman of the Secretaries’ and Managers’ Association – that fine fellow Walter Crickmer – has lost his life as have Tom Curry, the Trainer, Bert Whalley, the Coach, and eight much respected sporting journalists. Friends of the team and a member of the aircraft’s crew are also dead.

“As the days have come and slowly gone since that fateful day, we in football and the millions of English football supporters have anxiously awaited the news about Manager Matt Busby and those of the party who were injured and as the time passes we take some small consolation, at this tragic time, in the news that those who survived are slowly gaining ground in their fight for recovery.

“The Manchester United team was not just a football team, it was an institution which stood for all that was fine in the skill of the game, for all that was good in youthful athletics and for all that was commendable in British Sportsmanship. An inspiration to every young Englishman. Under the leadership of Matt Busby, whose fight for life has been just as inspiring as many of his football triumphs, the United team has acquired during the past few years that sparkling mantle of the greatest team of modern times, star-studded with brilliant young players, most of whom had barely reached their prime. To Matt must go most of the credit for the Club’s achievements since the end of the war.

“Arriving at Old Trafford in 1945, where there was little but bomb-damage rubble and precious little material upon which to work, he adopted the policy which has been paramount in all his dealings; to depend on youth first, second and always, but he has never ignored the transfer market when the necessity has arisen to keep his team in the forefront of the battle.

“Since Matt Busby settled down at Old Trafford it has been just one success story after another. For three years in succession United were Runners-up in the League, then they were 4th; then Runners-up again and eventually Champions in 1952. In 1953 they were 8th, and 4th again a year later. In 1955 they were 5th and the last two seasons they have been Champions. In addition, during this post-War period, they have been in the Cup Final twice.

“Whenever the necessity has arisen there has usually been a man in the Reserve team ready and able to take his place in the senior XI, and this goes down the scale until we find that the Junior team has won the F.A. Youth Cup five years in succession.

“That a new ‘United’ will arise out of the shattered remnants of that once great team is the one certainty about football’s future for the Busby policy has proved itself one-hundred-per-cent and the man who has helped Matt achieve all these successes – Jimmy Murphy – who was not with the party owing to the calls of his native Wales, will undoubtedly continue the good work until Matt is fit and well enough to take over the direction again.

“Every club in this country will be ready and willing to co-operate to the full in helping United in their troubles but it is unlikely that the club will avail itself of such offers of players as may be made (with perhaps an isolated exception) for the true answer is in the development of a new set of ‘Babes’. To them will be given an opportunity earlier than anyone could have expected but, being members of a great club they will know how much depends upon them and we feel sure they can be relied upon to give everything they have got in the building of a new Championship team.

“And so, whilst we remember with affection those fine fellows Tommy Taylor, Roger Byrne, Eddie Colman, Billy Whelan, David Pegg, Mark Jones and Geoff Bent – who lost their lives – and all the injured players who are struggling back to fitness let us all join in the hope that the time will not be far distant when Matt Busby returns to the managerial chair; when the injured boys are back playing again, and that team – respected throughout the land for their mastery of our great game – will again become our most beloved and most feared opponents.”

The tragic postscript to this beautiful tribute came three days later, when the cautiously optimistic note sounded about the recovery of those injured was shattered with the news that Duncan Edwards had lost his battle for survival. He joined his seven team-mates among those mourned by the footballing world and beyond.

OLE AND CASEY JOIN FANS AT MUNICH MEMORIAL SERVICE

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and women's head coach Casey Stoney attended the Munich memorial service at Old Trafford on Thursday afternoon, alongside other club staff and supporters.

Solskjaer and Stoney joined former United captain Bryan Robson in laying a wreath, as the Reds marked the anniversary of the air disaster that claimed 23 lives in 1958.

“It’s a dark day in our history and we’ll always remember the ones who sadly passed away in the accident and what it did to the club,” Solskjaer told us.

“Of course these days are very important for us.”

Also present at the event was Jimmy Murphy Jnr, who recalled how his father helped to rebuild United in his role as Matt Busby's assistant.

Songs were sung and poems read out in front of the Munich plaque in the south-east corner of the Old Trafford forecourt, before the congregation observed a two-minute silence at 15:04 GMT, the exact time the plane crashed on 6 February 1958.

We will never forget.

David Beckham has led the tributes as football remembers Manchester United's famed Busby Babes who died in the Munich air disaster.

On Thursday, United held a commemorative service at Old Trafford for the eight players and three members of United's staff who passed away on February 6 in 1958 in Munich. Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and other legends including Bryan Robson attended.

Geoff Bent, Roger Byrne, Eddie Colman, Mark Jones, David Pegg, Tommy Taylor and Liam Whelan were the players who died on that day 62 years ago. Duncan Edwards survived the crash but died in hospital 15 days later. While Johnny Berry and Jackie Blanchflower were among the survivors, they never played football again.

And ahead of the service, big names from the world of sport uploaded tributes to their social media accounts.

Beckham posted a photograph of the team on his Instagram account and captioned it up: 'Today we remember The Flowers of Manchester, their legacy lives on forever'.

He was joined in his tribute by Marcus Rashford, who uploaded the same photo and wrote: 'The Flowers of Manchester. There’s not a day goes by that I take this shirt for granted. You will never be forgotten'.

Harry Maguire, who joined United in the summer, added on his own Instagram: 'We will remember them'.

On-pitch rivals Liverpool also uploaded a tribute to their Twitter. They posted: 'The thoughts of #LFC are with all those affected by the Munich air disaster. 62 years ago today, but never forgotten.'

Along with the players, three club officials were killed in the disaster — secretary Walter Crickmer, trainer Tom Curry and coach Bert Whalley. There were also eight journalists who died, along with members of the public who were travelling with the team.

A service will be held on Thursday afternoon at 2.45pm, with supporters and staff to gather at the Munich memorial clock.

It will be led by reverend John Boyers and there will be poems, prayers and songs, including anthem The Flowers of Manchester.

The Munich air disaster involved British European Airways flight 609 crashing on its third attempt to take off from a slush-covered runway at Munich-Reim Airport. In total, there were 23 fatalities and 21 survivors from those who were on board.

United were on the way back from a European Cup match against Red Star Belgrade, which saw them reach the semi-final stages of the competition. They needed to refuel in Munich.

There were two failed attempts to take off and on the third the plane crashed into slush at the end of the runway before going through a fence. The left wing was torn off after a house was hit.

The plane was then evacuated over fears that the aircraft might explode while goalkeeper Harry Gregg helped pull survivors out of the wreckage. Nine members of the team survived, as did manager Matt Busby, four members of the crew, three journalists and three other passengers.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lays a wreath outside Old Trafford to mark the 63rd anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster as he calls on his stars to honour the Busby Babes against Everton

* Manchester United have paid their respects to those who lost their lives in 1958
* 23 people were killed, including eight players, in the tragic Munich Air Disaster
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer laid a wreath at Old Trafford to mark the 63rd anniversary
* Solskjaer urged his players to deliver a 'fitting performance' against Everton

Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer paid a poignant tribute on the 63rd anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster by laying a wreath outside Old Trafford.

Solskjaer was filmed paying his respects to the 23 people who tragically lost their lives on February 6, 1958. The club solemnly mark each anniversary of the crash and usually hold a yearly service at the stadium.

Supporters were not able to attend this year, however, with Solskjaer undertaking the emotional gesture alone before holding a moment of silence.

United took on Everton on Saturday night - and it is a rare occasion when the anniversary of the disaster coincides with a fixture.

Solskjaer urged his squad to deliver a 'fitting performance' in tribute to the fallen.

'It's a big day for everyone and always an emotional one,' he said.

'It's only the fourth time the game is played on the actual anniversary and it's important we put on a fitting performance and hopefully we can honour them with the result.'

Everton captain Lucas Digne and United skipper Harry Maguire both carried wreaths of their own as they lead their sides out of the tunnel before kick-off.

Players and staff marked the anniversary before the game got underway, in which proved to be a dramatic affair which saw Everton grab a point with the last kick of the game in the 95th minute.

United Women manager Casey Stoney also laid a wreath of her own at the memorial outside of the stand.

Eight United players were among those killed when their plane crashed on take-off in Munich.

The disaster happened while Sir Matt Busby's team were travelling back from Belgrade after reaching the semi-finals of the European Cup.

Sir Bobby Charlton is now the only living member of the group of players who survived the crash.

A service for supporters typically takes place on each anniversary under the Munich clock outside Old Trafford.

This year, a pre-recorded service was shown instead, beginning at 2:55pm.

At 3:04, the precise time of the disaster, another minute's silence was undertaken.

Another minute's silence will be held before kick-off and both teams will also wear black armbands. The two captains will lay wreaths.

Harry Maguire, who will lead United out on Saturday evening, posted a touching tribute and wrote: 'We will remember them always.'

Manchester City and Liverpool were among a number of clubs to have also paid their respects this morning.

HOW THE MUNICH AIR DISASTER WILL BE REMEMBERED

Manchester United are pleased to confirm that the 64th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster will be marked with a fan-led ceremony at Old Trafford on Sunday.

This will be the first time since 2020 that the traditional ceremony has been held on the 6 February anniversary, after pandemic-related restrictions made it impossible to hold the event last year.

As usual, the service will be led “by the fans, for the fans”, with supporters’ group Munich58 co-ordinating and former club chaplain Rev John Boyers acting as master of ceremonies.

The ceremony will begin at 14:40 GMT on Sunday beneath the Munich memorial plaque on the East Stand forecourt of Old Trafford, and will consist of poems and songs, including a rendition of The Flowers of Manchester. The names of all those who lost their lives in the tragedy will be read out, prior to a two-minute silence at 15:04 GMT, marking the time the plane crash occurred 64 years ago.

Fans who wish to pay their respects but cannot be at Old Trafford, can still do so by watching the service live on MUTV, ManUtd.com and our United App.

Tributes will also be paid at our FA Cup fourth-round tie against Middlesbrough at Old Trafford on Friday, with interim manager Ralf Rangnick placing a wreath on the pitch ahead of kick off and the team wearing black armbands during the game.

A giant banner will be unfurled by fans ahead of kick-off in the Stretford End proclaiming the powerful words, ‘We’ll never die’.

Flags at Old Trafford will fly at half-mast from Friday until after the U18’s match on Wednesday evening as a gesture of our everlasting respect.

Writing in his manager’s notes for United Review, Rangnick highlights the importance of these tributes: “This is our closest game to the anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster and, as is customary, the club will be marking the occasion ahead of kick-off.

“I have always admired how this club pays tribute every year to such a major incident in its history, and it is important that this tradition always continues because it is such a big part of the Manchester United story. I hope that we are also able to mark the occasion with an important victory this evening.”

Harry Maguire also understands how significant the Munich anniversary is and our club captain expects a unique atmosphere on Friday. “I think it is a really important day, the anniversary of the air disaster, a huge tragedy, but a tragedy where the club has built a lot of traditions and foundations to show togetherness with the fans,” says Harry. “And the club in general has shown a huge togetherness and that is what it has showed over the years, to rise again and show that spirit.

“Every game that you play for Manchester United, you always hope to play your best performance, but you know that when this anniversary comes around, the atmosphere will be really special, the occasion will be special, so we want to put on a performance and get a result that the club deserves. When you join this club, you learn about the traditions and lot does stem from that day.”

The tragic events at Munich will also be marked by our other teams this weekend. Manchester United Women will wear black arm bands in their away game against Arsenal on Sunday, and Academy players will place remembrance flowers and wear black armbands across their matches.

The anniversary will also be marked in Munich, with members of the Manchester Munich Memorial Foundation resuming their annual service at the crash site, now known as Manchesterplatz. Wreaths will be placed on behalf of the club, the Association of Former Manchester United Players and the fans. Two minutes’ silence will be observed and followed by the traditional singing of The Flowers of Manchester.
