Default Ralf Rangnick

Ralf Rangnick agrees a six-month deal to take over at Manchester United - and the German could then stay on for two years as a consultant once Red Devils bring in Mauricio Pochettino from PSG

* Man United have agreed terms with Ralf Rangnick to be their interim manager
* United are on the hunt for a new manager after sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer
* The Red Devils are seeking an interim boss to take charge for the rest of the term
* Rangnick will take over for six months before taking up a consultancy position
* He is known as the 'Godfather of German football' for his innovative coaching
* The 63-year-old helped transform RB Leipzig and Salzburg as technical director

Ralf Rangnick is set to become Manchester United’s interim manager until the end of the season after agreeing terms over a six-month contract at Old Trafford.

The 63-year-old German coach is head of sports and development at Lokomotiv Moscow, and United are in talks with the Russian club to secure his release.

Sources say that an agreement has yet to be reached between the two clubs – with United respectful that Lokomotiv had a Europa League game at home to Lazio last night – but it is expected to be confirmed.

Rangnick, who will stay on at United for a further two years in a consultancy role as part of the deal, still needs a work permit so caretaker boss Michael Carrick will remain in charge for Sunday’s trip to Chelsea.

United have chosen Rangnick as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s replacement from a shortlist that included Ernesto Valverde, Lucien Favre, Rudi Garcia and Paulo Fonseca.

Rangnick has a good relationship with the Old Trafford hierarchy having previously spoken to the club before they appointed Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho. He also interviewed for the Everton job before Carlo Ancelotti took over at Goodison Park in December 2019.

He has maintained links with senior figures at Old Trafford and, in particular, the club’s director of football John Murtough.

Rangnick is a leading advocate of the gegenpressing approach that influenced a generation of German coaches including Jurgen Klopp, Thomas Tuchel and Julian Nagelsmann.

Manchester United have reached an agreement to name Ralf Rangnick interim manager. Mauricio Pochettino is the No 1 target to ultimately replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer next summer

He has previously coached Stuttgart, Hannover, Hoffenheim and Schalke, having made his name by leading Ulm into the Bundesliga for the first time in their history.

Rangnick also had two stints in charge of RB Leipzig after being appointed as director of football in 2012 as the club rose to the top-flight from the fourth tier of German football.

He has only won one major trophy as a manager – the German Cup in 2011 with Schalke – but steered the same club to the Champions League semi-finals in 2011 when they lost 6-1 on aggregate to United.

United have struck terms with Rangnick, who will take a consultancy role after his stint ends. Rangnick has held talks with United before and was the club's top choice for the interim role. Rangnick is known as the 'Godfather of German football' and is said to have inspired Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp (right)

Rangnick joined Lokomotiv on a three-year contract in July, and the consultancy role at United ensures that he is compensated for the remainder of that deal.

United are looking for an experienced figure to bring stability and momentum for the rest of the season after ending Solskjaer’s three-year reign at the weekend, and feel that Rangnick fits the bill.

His first game in charge is likely to be against Arsenal at Old Trafford on Thursday or Crystal Palace at home three days later, with Carrick continuing as caretaker until then after winning his first game in charge against Villarreal on Tuesday night.

United were committed to installing an interim boss after deciding it would be too problematic to prise Mauricio Pochettino from Paris Saint-Germain in mid-season.

Pochettino made it clear that he would interested in making the switch now, but United put out feelers through intermediaries and were told that any approach would be met with firm resistance from PSG.

The French club were determined not to disrupt their season, but may be more open to letting Pochettino leave in the summer when he will be the No.1 contender to land the United job on a permanent basis.

Former Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane is already being tipped as the Argentine’s likely successor in Paris when he ends a sabbatical in the summer, having indicated that he would not be interested in the United job.

Pochettino has worked with sporting directors at PSG and Tottenham, and it’s understood that he would be comfortable working with Rangnick in a similar role.

In an interview with Coaches' Voice, Rangnick explained how during his time as Leipzig and Salzburg technical director, he placed a huge emphasis on scouting and developing players. He stunned bosses when he laid out his plans to sell on players for double figures within two years of their arrival.

It remains to be seen whether Rangnick keeps hold of Solskjaer's old staff, including Michael Carrick. Rangnick boasts an impressive track record with youngsters which will be crucial for the development of Marcus Rashford (L) and Mason Greenwood (R). Jadon Sancho has struggled to make an impact but will hope to make his mark under Rangnick

The 63-year-old prioritised signing younger players and recruited Naby Keita, Sadio Mane and Kevin Kampl early on. He also focused on 'club building' rather than 'team building', attempting to form a stronger link between the club and its fans.

Relations at United between the club and fans have been fraught in recent years, with supporters storming Old Trafford late last season to protest the Glazers' ownership in the wake of the European Super League farce.

Nicknamed 'The Professor', Rangnick is credited with devising the Gegenpress and has proved an inspiration for Premier League managers Jurgen Klopp and Thomas Tuchel.

'I was honoured when Jurgen Klopp suggested that I might be the best German coach,' Rangnick told the same outlet. 'He and I have known each other for over 20 years, and we certainly appreciate one another.

'It's common knowledge that we have a pretty similar idea of how football should be played, and I think that this is the reason he said those nice things about me

'My Hoffenheim team played against Jurgen’s Borussia Dortmund back in 2008. We beat them 4-1 and Jurgen said a week later, before his next game, that our style was exactly the kind of football that he wanted to play with Dortmund.'

Rangnick also gave Chelsea boss Tuchel his first coaching role in football - as Under-15 coach at German side Ulm after he was forced into an early retirement through injury.

Although committing to two separate managerial appointments is a peculiar strategy, the Old Trafford hierarchy are said to be satisfied that an interim head coach would provide stability and momentum while giving them the freedom to install a permanent replacement at the end of the season.

It also suggests that United know their preferred target will not be available until the summer — whether that is Pochettino or someone else. Ideally, they would have kept Solskjaer in charge until then but United's alarming dip in form forced the club into a change of plan.

'You know what this club means to me and what I wanted to achieve here,' Solskjaer said in an emotional farewell.

'For the club, for the fans, for the players, for the staff. I wanted us to take the next step to challenge for the league, to win trophies and I only think it's right that it comes from the horse's mouth.

'It's been a ball. Let's keep supporting this team, you've got to stick with them. They [the fans] have been amazing with me since one of my first kicks of the ball, I scored with one of the first ones, until now.

'I'm sure we'll meet again because if there's anywhere I'm going to watch football games, that's at Old Trafford.'

Default Re: Ralf Rangnick

Ralf Rangnick is the interim specialist who will bring humanity to a Man United squad on their knees... but he is wedded to work-rate and could be in for a bumpy ride

* Ralf Rangnick is on the verge of being named as Man United's interim manager
* It was Rangnick who taught Jurgen Klopp what proper pressing really looks like
* There could certainly be a bumpy ride ahead with press-shy Cristiano Ronaldo
* He worked as an Arsenal intern and considers Arsene Wenger a major influence

It was when Ralf Rangnick came up against Manchester United in a Champions League semi-final for Schalke 10 years ago that he revealed his sensitivity about the tag he has carried around during a 38-year career in management.

On the eve of that first leg in Gelsenkirchen he was reminded of his nickname ‘The Professor’, which he had borne since the day he went on national TV in 1998 with a whiteboard to introduce the German nation to the notion of ‘pressing’ and the flat back four.

The reminder rankled with him. He said it was demeaning. But United could certainly use something more professorial after three years in which Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did not appear to have any strategic or tactical method at all.

Rangnick, an Anglophile since a year studying at Sussex University as a 21-year-old, worked as an intern at Arsenal and considers Arsene Wenger a major influence.

Ralf Ragnick (left) was reminded of his nickname 'The Professor' when his side played Man Utd. Sacked boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer did not appear to have any strategic or tactical method at all. He worked as an intern at Arsenal and considers Arsene Wenger a major influence

But that strategising in a German television studio was all his own work. He was the trailblazer of the country’s pressing game and has translated it to clubs great and small, to hugely successful effect.

It was Rangnick, before Jurgen Klopp, who developed an obsession with his players’ reaction times in training. It was Rangnick who taught Klopp what effective pressing really looks like when his newly promoted Hoffenheim side defeated the current Liverpool manager’s Dortmund 4-1 in September 2008.

We need to get to where they are now,’ a devastated Klopp said in the aftermath of that hammering. ‘Tactical behaviour is not like riding a bike, unfortunately. You have to practise again and again.’

Rangnick seems to have been something of a mentor to Klopp, who rang him for advice before signing his first managerial contract at Mainz in 2001.

The two appeared together on TV the following year to deliver a searing analysis of why the German national team were failing. It proved visionary.

The relationship between these two progressive, prodigious Germans makes for a fascinating sub-plot when United travel to Anfield on March 19. But the big question about the months before then is how many of his own ideas and systems Rangnick will actually be able to bring.

The 63-year-old was so wedded to work-rate and pressing at Schalke that he banned the back-pass in training and stipulated a maximum of two touches on the ball.

Rangnick (left) seems to have been something of a mentor to Liverpool's Jurgen Klopp (right)

But United’s current personnel are simply not cut out for such an approach. Cristiano Ronaldo has no more place in that kind of set-up than he would in Klopp’s Liverpool team. Jadon Sancho doesn’t play that way, either, although at 21 he could perhaps be shaped.

There could certainly be a bumpy ride ahead with Ronaldo, although Rangnick’s former players do attest to his capacity to make them play better and create a happy workplace — qualities United have been lacking.

On the night of that Champions League clash with Sir Alex’s Ferguson’s United, Schalke’s legendary Spain striker Raul spoke of the positive atmosphere Rangnick had created in his short time there.

He has not stayed at clubs long. In those 38 years of management only two spells have lasted more than two years.

A five-year stint at Hoffenheim — where his players were encouraged to shoot against specific areas of a large electronic wall and there were elaborate methods to get his players passing in triangles — was certainly the outlier.

Eight months into the spell that took Schalke to the Champions League encounter with United, he stepped away, physically diminished by glandular fever and suffering what was described as ‘burn-out syndrome’.

Since then, he has become something of an interim specialist.

He took over at RB Leipzig when Ralph Hasenhuttl wasn’t available for another season at the beginning of 2015-16, won promotion to the Bundesliga and then stepped away. He took on the role again three years later when the club couldn’t get Julian Nagelsmann from Hoffenheim. The team finished third in the Bundesliga and he stepped down.

But there is a sense he craves more than the caretaker position. He is thought to have spoken with Everton before Carlo Ancelotti was hired. Chelsea are believed to have been ready to give him four months at the helm when Frank Lampard was struggling, although Rangnick apparently felt the time was too short to have an influence.

His experience of British football to date has been bruising. During that year at Sussex University, part of a degree course in English and PE, he played for Southwick FC in the Sussex County Division One. In his second match, away to Chichester, he suffered three broken ribs and a punctured lung.

The 63-year-old has become something of an interim specialist since his time at Schalke. Rangnick won German promotions with Hoffenheim and Hannover as he climbed the ladder. He craves more than just he caretaker role - he has been linked with Everton and Chelsea. The German will bring humanity to a squad which seems on its knees and all out of ideas

But while United’s last managerial professor, Louis van Gaal, instructed his players to ‘play with the brain, not the feet’ and expected them to understand what he was talking about, Rangnick brings humanity to a squad which seems on its knees and all out of ideas.

And his position as club consultant beyond this season could conceivably give United the dynamic director of football they are so painfully lacking.

‘My job — the job — is to improve players,’ he said in 2018. ‘Players follow you as a manager if they feel that you make them better. That’s the greatest, most sincere motivation there is.’

Default Re: Ralf Rangnick

Ralf Rangnick is confirmed as Man United's interim manager, with the German demanding success THIS season and vowing to help struggling stars FINALLY 'fulfill their potential'

* Ralf Rangnick will be tasked with getting Manchester United into the top four
* Michael Carrick will remain in charge as Rangnick's visa application is finalised
* Rangnick said United's squad 'is full of talent and has a great balance of youth and experience'
* He will move into a consultancy role for two years at the end of the season

Ralf Rangnick has been confirmed as Manchester United's interim manager until the end of the season.

The 63-year-old German has left his role as director of sports and development at Lokomotiv Moscow to replace Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at United on a six-month contract until the end of May.

Rangnick will then stay on at Old Trafford in a consultancy role for a further two years, although it's possible he could land the manager's job on a permanent basis if results go well.

United chose Rangnick from a shortlist of five candidates last week but have been negotiating his release from Lokomotiv while the former Schalke, Hoffenheim and Hanover boss applied for a work permit.

Ralf Rangnick has finally been confirmed as Manchester United's interim manager. Rangnick is highly regarded in the game and is nicknamed 'the godfather of gegenpressing'

That process is ongoing so it remains to be seen if Rangnick will be in the dug-out for Thursday's game against Arsenal at Old Trafford.

Caretaker manager Michael Carrick, who has overseen a Champions League win over Villarreal and Sunday's draw at Premier League leaders Chelsea, will remain in charge if Rangnick cannot begin work immediately.

It's understood that Solskjaer's back-room team – assistant Mike Phelan, coaches Carrick and Kieran McKenna, and goalkeeper coach Richard Hartis – will all remain at United even though Rangnick will bring in a few of his own staff including trusted video analyst Lars Kornetka.

United insist that Rangnick was always their No 1 candidate and he impressed during an interview with executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, football director John Murtough – who spent time with Rangnick when he was at RB Leipzig in 2019 – and technical director Darren Fletcher.

They believe his experience over four decades in football will be invaluable in helping the team for the rest of the season and then advising the club for two years after that.

United announced the news on Monday, saying: 'Manchester United is delighted to announce the appointment of Ralf Rangnick as interim manager until the end of the season, subject to work visa requirements. Following this period, Ralf and the club have agreed that he will continue in a consultancy role for a further two years.

'Michael Carrick will remain in charge of the first team until Ralf's work visa is finalised. The club wishes to place on record its thanks to Lokomotiv Moscow for their co-operation in the process of bringing Ralf to Manchester United.'

Rangnick spoke for the first time about his move to Old Trafford, saying: 'I am excited to be joining Manchester United and focused on making this a successful season for the club. The squad is full of talent and has a great balance of youth and experience.

'All my efforts for the next six months will be on helping these players fulfil their potential, both individually and, most importantly, as a team. Beyond that I look forward to supporting the club's longer-term goals on a consultancy basis.'

Michael Carrick will stay in charge against Arsenal if Rangnick's visa hasn't been approved. Gary Neville was quick to take to Twitter to commend the appointment of Rangnick at United

United's football director John Murtough added: 'Ralf is one of the most respected coaches and innovators in European football. He was our number one candidate for Interim Manager, reflecting the invaluable leadership and technical skills he will bring from almost four decades of experience in management and coaching.

'Everyone at the club is looking forward to working with him during the season ahead, and then for a further two years in his advisory role.'

Carrick denied before and after the Chelsea game on Sunday that Rangnick had any influence over his team selection or tactics after he dropped Cristiano Ronaldo to the bench and implemented a higher press at Stamford Bridge.

Sky Sports pundit and United hero Gary Neville suggested that Rangnick picked the team and was in touch with the coaching staff to offer guidance as the game was unfolding, with Darren Fletcher pictured wearing an earpiece in the dugout. Club sources insist that Fletcher was speaking to analysts in the stands.

'A lot of people having a go at Michael Carrick for dropping Ronaldo and picking that MDF,' Neville wrote on Twitter. 'I've a feeling the the incoming manager has picked that team as it's a huge departure from midweek and what they've been doing.'

United legend Neville was quick to commend the appointment on Rangnick on Monday, saying on Twitter: 'Welcome to the Greatest Football Club in the World Ralf Rangnick. A contract for 6 months to coach the team A contract for 2 years to coach the club.'

Rangnick will be tasked with galvanising United's season and steering them back into the top of four of the Premier League. They are currently eighth, five points behind West Ham in fourth.

United held Premier League leaders Chelsea to a 1-1 draw at Stamford Bridge on Sunday - Jadon Sancho put United ahead before Jorginho equalised from the penalty spot.

Rangnick boasts an impressive footballing pedigree - renowned as the 'Godfather of Gegenpressing', the German has significantly influenced a number of leading coaches in the game such as Jurgen Klopp, Thomas Tuchel and Julian Nagelsmann.

Rangnick has drawn comparisons with his and Klopp's tactical ideas. In an interview with the Coaches Voice in September, he said: 'Our idea is clear: it's very, very similar to my almost-coaching friend Jurgen Klopp.

'Our football is very heavy metal, rock and roll and it's not slow balls. It's not square passes, back passes. Just having the ball ourselves doesn't make sense.'

Klopp has been equally complimentary of Rangnick.

'Unfortunately a good coach is coming to England so that's how it is, to Manchester United,' Liverpool boss Klopp said, when asked about Rangnick last Friday.

'Ralf is obviously a very experienced manager, built famously two clubs from nowhere to proper threats and proper forces in Germany with Hoffenheim and (RB) Leipzig.

'Been to lot of different jobs in football but always his first concern actually was being a coach, being a manager and that's what his best skill is. United will be organised on the pitch I think we should realise that and that's obviously not good news for other teams.'

Jurgen Klopp is one of a number of esteemed coaches to have been influenced by Rangnick. Ragnick (left) has a deep admiration for English football, having studied in England aged 21

Rangnick also studied in England in his early 20s, a time that forged his love of English football. He played for non-league club Southwick FC.

Attention now will turn to which players at United can fit into Rangnick's style of play. Ronaldo will shoulder most of the scrutiny after being benched at Chelsea, while Rangnick has previously also been critical of Luke Shaw.

When quizzed about United last year, Rangnick said: 'I think that they could do with a left-back.

'I know they have Luke Shaw but I'm not so sure if he's still on the same kind of level you need for a club like Manchester United.'

And Jamie Carragher questioned whether Rangnick is going to have time to get his methods across to the United squad, especially with December being the most hectic time in the footballing calendar.

'There's a clear plan of what he wants to do,' Carragher said on Sky Sports on Sunday. 'When you watch Man United you're not quite sure what they're doing.

'There's no exact science on how to win a football game, but United have not had a clear plan.

'This guy has got a clear plan. The problem he's going to have is his plan is chalk and cheese to United.

'There are five or six players who you think aren't going to fit into that system. This needs to be coached, this isn't something you work on and it's done in a week. It's difficult to find the time to train.'

Ralf Rangnick must convince the FA of his managerial credentials as his stints at RB Leipzig are not enough to automatically qualify for a work permit... but Manchester United are hopeful he will be in the dugout this weekend

* Man United have confirmed Ralf Rangnick will not be in charge of Arsenal clash
* Rangnick's arrival has been put on hold by his failure to get a work permit so far
* The German must convince an FA panel of his managerial credentials for permit
* He has not managed enough in recent years to qualify automatically for GBE

Ralf Rangnick must convince an FA panel of his managerial credentials to secure a work permit, although Manchester United remain optimistic the German will be able to take charge of his first game against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

United confirmed on Tuesday that caretaker boss Michael Carrick would oversee a third game — at home to Arsenal at Old Trafford on Thursday night — while Rangnick waits for his paperwork to come through.

The 63-year-old flew into the UK on Monday night, ahead of stricter Covid restrictions coming into place hours later, and is believed to be staying at a Manchester hotel.

It is understood that Rangnick does not meet the FA’s criteria for a Governing Body Endorsement (GBE) because he has not managed a top-flight club in Europe for long enough in the last five years — either two years consecutively or three years cumulatively.

Although Rangnick twice took charge of RB Leipzig in the 2015-16 and 2018-19 seasons while also working as the club’s director of football, that is not enough to qualify automatically for a GBE — as Antonio Conte did when taking over at Tottenham a month ago because of his recent stints at Inter Milan and Chelsea.

United sources argue that Rangnick has held other senior roles at RB Salzburg and Lokomotiv Moscow but, technically, he has not worked enough in this period as a manager.

Ralf Rangnick must convince the FA of his managerial credentials to secure a work permit. Caretaker boss Michael Carrick will remain in charge for Arsenal clash on Thursday night. United are hopeful the German will be in charge in time for Crystal Palace’s visit on Sunday. United's clash with Arsenal on Thursday has come too soon for Rangnick to take charge

His GBE will need to be approved by a three-man exceptions panel appointed by the FA, and chaired by a legal professional and two other figures with a background in football, before he can be granted a work permit by the Home Office.

United are hopeful it will come through before the end of the week, enabling Rangnick to be in the dug-out against Palace.

However, Thursday’s match against Arsenal has come too soon and Carrick will stay in temporary charge after guiding United to a Champions League group win over Villarreal and a Premier League draw at Chelsea since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked 10 days ago.

A club statement on Tuesday read: ‘Michael Carrick will remain in caretaker charge for the game against Arsenal on Thursday.

‘Ralf Rangnick was announced as interim manager on Monday but, while the club follows the regulatory process around a work visa, Carrick will continue at the helm.’

Ralf Rangnick is set to work just SIX DAYS a month in new Manchester United consultancy role once he steps down as interim boss... and he's NOT been consulted on club's new search for a permanent boss

* Ralf Rangnick will be given a lighter workload in his consultancy role at United
* The German interim manager has agreed a two-year stay beyond this season
* The role would constitute 144 days’ work if he remains at Old Trafford until 2024
* Rangnick has also not been consulted in the club’s hunt for a permanent boss
* Mauricio Pochettino and Erik ten Hag are the frontrunners for the job after talks

Ralf Rangnick is set to work just six days a month when he begins a consultancy role at Manchester United this summer.

The interim manager has agreed a two-year stay beyond this season and, although United have been tight-lipped on the details of his next role, Sportsmail has learned that it would constitute 144 days’ work should Rangnick remain at Old Trafford until 2024.

The 63-year-old has not been consulted in the club’s hunt for a permanent boss, with Mauricio Pochettino and Ajax’s Erik ten Hag the frontrunners for the job after talks.

Pochettino has the backing of several former United players but Ten Hag boasts a growing following among the United fanbase.

Sevilla’s Julen Lopetegui and Luis Enrique are viewed as outsiders, with the latter coaching Spain at this year’s World Cup.

Rangnick’s part-time duties at United are likely to depend on which manager is appointed, but there is some mystery surrounding what will be expected of the German, with Darren Fletcher, John Murtough and Matt Judge heading up the various aspects of the club’s football operations.

Rangnick has been forthright about where United need to strengthen if they are to bridge the gap to Manchester City and Liverpool, suggesting last week that a streamlined recruitment process is more important than the next head coach. He believes United have consistently signed players who are too similar.

Ralf Rangnick will be given a lighter workload in his consultancy role at Manchester United. Rangnick, 63, has also not been consulted in the club’s hunt for a permanent boss

‘Manchester City and Liverpool have been built together and recruited over five or six years — all of them under the premise of how the coaches want to play,’ Rangnick said.

‘I told the board this is what has to happen. Whenever the new head coach is clear, it has to be: how does he want to play and what kind of players do we need for that?

‘This team does not lack technical players, it can do with more physicality. It takes the right decisions and knowing where you want to go: what kind of players, what kind of manager and then, in every transfer window, try to get the best possible.

‘This is not rocket science. It has to be done and, if that happens, maybe in two or three transfer windows the situation could be different.’
