Jose Mourinho takes out Olly Murs during Soccer Aid charity match to halt popstar's lively performance at Old Trafford

After watching popstar Olly Murs run riot in the opening stages of Sunday night's Soccer Aid charity match, Rest of the World manager Jose Mourinho decided to take matters into his own hands by fouling the popstar.

The Special One, who had clearly had enough of seeing Murs torment his defenders at Old Trafford, entered the pitch to trip up England's most impressive celebrity.

The 30-year-old was left in a heap after Mourinho's challenge, but took the incident in good humour as the Portuguese smirked on his way back to the dugout.

The Chelsea boss had another reason to smile later on as a hat-trick from AC Milan manager Clarence Seedorf helped his side to a 4-2 victory against Sam Allardyce's England.

Despite the game being played in order to raise money for charity Unicef, it wasn't all good-natured between the two teams of legends and stars of stage and screen.

TV presenter Jonathan Wilkes and former Holland midfielder Edgar Davids were involved in a bust-up during the second half after a mistimed tackle from the ex-professional.

Wilkes' reacted to the challenge and squared up to the 41-year-old, only for Davids to thrust his forearm into his opponent's face.

Wilkes got his revenge shortly afterwards when he picked Davids' shinpad off the Old Trafford turf and launched it over the Dutchman's head.

Photos of Sir Alex Ferguson auctioned for UNICEF

Sir Alex Ferguson launched a year of celebration on Tuesday evening to celebrate the 15th anniversary of the 'United for UNICEF' partnership.

To commemorate the longest running partnership between a sporting organisation and a global children’s charity, Manchester United is hosting a series of events in aid of UNICEF, the first of which was a photography exhibition hosted by Sir Alex Ferguson.

This invite-only event was attended by a host of esteemed guests and friends of the club, including Eamonn Holmes and Paddy Crerand. A selection of images were unveiled that were each signed by Sir Alex and a number of legendary players such as Paul Scholes, Cristiano Ronaldo and David Beckham.

A UNICEF ambassador, Sir Alex commented: “UNICEF is such a great partner of Manchester United and the work they do is exceptional; they deal with poverty, child abuse and exploitation, so the support they receive from Manchester United is really important.”

Guests were invited to bid for the prints in an auction that will continue online*www.united4unicef.org*until 5th October. Money raised will help fund UNICEF’s work protecting vulnerable children in Vietnam from abuse, neglect and exploitation.

Mata and Blind reward MU Foundation volunteers
Manchester United stars meet hardworking participants of Volunteer Ninety Nine programme

Manchester United Foundation's Volunteer Ninety Nine programme is transforming the lives of people aged 16-18 who are passionate about pursuing a career in sport by providing training, nationally recognised qualifications and work experience in the industry and the hard work of one group was recognised last week when they met first-team stars Juan Mata and Daley Blind at United’s Aon Training Complex in Carrington.

Participants in the Volunteer Ninety Nine programme are encouraged to accumulate as many hours as possible on MU Foundation projects, including Street Reds and the Premier League 4 Sport scheme, and aim to reach milestones of 33, 66 and 99 hours of volunteering, which each represent the FA Cup, Barclays Premier League and UEFA Champions League trophies that United won in 1998/99.

Quote:
"It's very nice to help all the people just doing what you love to do, which is play football and try to be an example"
- Juan Mata
.
Mata and Blind had a kickabout with the lucky volunteers in the club's state-of-the-art training facility and were subject to a question-and-answer session by them.
"It's a real pleasure to be here with the young people; the Foundation is doing great work," Mata said. "It's very nice to have the opportunity to help all the people just doing what you love to do, which is play football and try to be an example."

The hook of the Barclays Premier League’s most successful club and its stars is evident with the experience of Macenzie Whittaker, who volunteers at Premier League 4 Sport sessions and has achieved coaching qualifications in basketball, one of the sports included in the PL4Sport programme.

"I have got so much out of it and it's an absolute privilege to wear the United badge," the 18-year-old from Salford said. "When we met the players I was starstruck at first and had to take a step back, but to have them playing with us was really good."

MU Foundation works in disadvantaged areas across Greater Manchester, changing for the better the lives of local youngsters and Dawn Bracegirdle, community cohesion manager for the Foundation who heads up Volunteer Ninety Nine, said the "real employment skills" participants pick up are invaluable in finding opportunities to work in sport.

"The opportunity for young people to gain valuable work experience and real employment skills is what caused the need for this programme," Bracegirdle said. "Today's visit is a really nice way to reward the hard work of our volunteers who give up hours and hours of their time.

"It benefits them but it also benefits many of our projects within the Foundation, so to be able to meet a few heroes today is a really great way of rewarding their commitment."

City united to help Manchester youth enjoy sport
Ahead of Sunday's derby Man City and Man Utd stars join local Premier League Kicks kids

They may be compatriots but Angel Di Maria, Marcos Rojo and Pablo Zabaleta will be battling against each other on Sunday in the Manchester derby in the Barclays Premier League. But the Argentinian trio put aside their club differences on Friday to take part in a competitive but good-spirited football session at Manchester College in Ardwick.

City’s Zabaleta and United’s Di Maria and Rojo were on hand to take part in a Premier League Kicks session between participants from the clubs’ respective Foundations and for Di Maria, it was good to see his friend Zabaleta again, but that bond, as well as with City forward Sergio Aguero, will be forgotten at 1.30pm on Sunday.

“It’s great for us with the very good friendships we enjoy to be here together in the same city, in Manchester,” Di Maria told MUTV. “When you’re outside Argentina it’s good to have friends here. But on matchday that friendship is put aside because it’s all about the shirt. They’re blue, I’m red and our friendship ends during the match.”

Quote:
"They may be rivals on the pitch, but off it United and City are committed to providing opportunities for young people in the local area to play sport"
- Richard Scudamore
.
Jointly funded with Sport England, Premier League Kicks uses the reach and appeal of professional football clubs to engage young people from challenging communities in regular football, sport and personal development activities. In Manchester alone almost 5,000 young people have participated in Premier League Kicks since it launched in 2006. The programme currently runs at 15 city-wide locations and has delivered a total 6,187 sessions and a combined 542,369 participant attendances.

“City in the Community has worked for more than 27 years with the most in-need people across Greater Manchester,” Mike Green, head of City in the Community, said. “We are committed to providing opportunities through football to every community, regardless of the colour of their shirt.”

“Today has been a great example of how the power of football can engage and inspire young people.”

Manchester United Foundation Community Cohesion Manager, Dawn Bracegirdle talked about how Premier League Kicks is a very popular project and makes a huge difference to the lives of young people across the city.

"At a grassroots level football is the common interest between our communities and club rivalry isn’t so important,” Bracegirdle said. “We have City fans at our Manchester United Kicks sessions and vice versa and as a result both United and City have helped to develop stronger, safer and more respectful communities within Manchester.”

Premier League Chief Executive, Richard Scudamore highlighted the “fantastic track record” the League’s clubs have in terms of investing in and delivering good cause and grassroots sport initiatives.

“This event is one example of the community work undertaken by Manchester City and Manchester United and shows that while they may be rivals on the pitch, off it they are committed to providing opportunities for young people in the local area to play sport,” Scudamore said.

The session took place at the Manchester College, in Ardwick, on a 3G Artificial Grass Pitch funded with a £691,737 grant from the Football Foundation, a charity financed by the Premier League, the FA and Sport England.* The grant of for the all-weather floodlit facilities has enabled over 20 local teams and 800 players to have regular training sessions and matches throughout the year.

The event marked the second time in October that the two clubs’ Kicks teams had joined up, having recently travelled*together to London for the Premier League Kicks Cup finals at Hackney Marshes.
