Manchester United seal £750M kit deal with adidas after ending 13 seasons with Nike

* World record kit deal is twice what adidas pay Real Madrid
* New deal will start at the beginning of 2015-16 season
* Kit giant claim they will make £1.5billion from shirt sales in decade
* Nike kit deal with United to end after 13 years

Manchester United have signed a kit deal worth a staggering £750million — more than twice as much as any of their European rivals.

The world record agreement with adidas will run for the next decade and ends more than three years of tortuous negotiations.

Remarkably, it comes after a season in which United failed even to qualify for Europe. But adidas are confident new manager Louis van Gaal will quickly guide them back to the summit of the European game because the German sports brand justified their huge outlay by predicting £1.5billion worth of replica shirt sales over the term of the contract, which will begin next year.

Where it all began: Nike's relationship with United began in 2002, as David Beckham celebrates scoring a Premier League goal against Charlton

This was clearly in response to Nike, who did not take up their right to match adidas’s offer and continue a partnership with United worth £30m a year for 13 years because they no longer consider it value for money.

The new deal, which would allow United to buy a player of the calibre of Luis Suarez every year for a decade, is a triumph for executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, who has had a torrid time on the football front since taking charge at Old Trafford a year ago.

And it means United have at last beaten their arch-rivals Real Madrid, whose £31m-a-year deal is the next biggest in Europe.

The terms of United’s new agreement allow them to bring in yet more millions from additional clothing and merchandising deals.

The adidas contract relates only to playing and training wear and is, in effect, a traditional kit contract. The licensing from all the other United merchandising — from posters to duvet covers — that Nike controlled reverts to the club.

SPORT'S MAJOR DEALS

Real Madrid - Real’s agreement with adidas, which runs until 2020, was widely reported to be the most lucrative in world football before United announced their deal with the same firm.

Barcelona - Barcelona announced in 2007 that their deal with Nike, initially signed in 2006, was being extended until the end of the 2017-18 season. The original contract was worth a minimum of £24million a year.

Arsenal - This is the first season of Arsenal’s deal with Puma, which was announced in January as the biggest contract in both parties’ history.
Chelsea - Chelsea and adidas signed a 10-year deal last June worth almost £300million.

Man City - City switched from local firm Umbro to Nike last season in a six-year deal announced in May 2012.

Liverpool - In January 2012, Liverpool announced a six-year agreement with American firm Warrior. The deal is reportedly worth £25million a year to the Reds. Warrior general manager Richard Wright said at the time: 'We are here to shake up the world of football.'

Bayern Munich - Bayern Munich and adidas extended their collaboration beyond the 50-year mark with a new deal in 2011 that runs until 2020. Adidas also owns a stake in the club.

England - The Football Association ended a 60-year association with Umbro by switching to Nike. A five-year deal to run from 2013 to 2018 was announced in September 2012. The figure was not made public but the FA described it as 'a substantial investment'.'

NFL - Nike replaced Reebok as the official supplier of kit to the National Football League in 2012 in a five-year deal that is the most lucrative in US sport.
And there is still an opportunity for United to do a further fashion brand tie-up, with Japanese company Uniqlo, who sponsor Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic, understood to have been in talks.

But once again the fans will be hit in the pocket. United’s Nike strip for the forthcoming season, featuring new sponsors Chevrolet, was officially released last week, with adults’ shirts costing between £50 and £60, and kids’ shirts going for £42. But they will already be out of date by this time next year, when there will be new home and away adidas jerseys to buy.

United remain the best supported club in the world despite a woeful season under David Moyes. But for adidas to record their forecasted £1.5bn sales, United need to return to their glory days under Sir Alex Ferguson and a box-office signing or two would come in handy.

United said on Monday: ‘Manchester United has reached a 10-year agreement with adidas for a global technical sponsorship and dual branded licensing deal for a minimum gurantee of £750m, subject to certain adjustments.'

Adidas group chief executive Herbert Hainer, who had watched two of his company branded national teams Germany and Argentina contest the World Cup final, said: ‘We are excited to team up with Manchester United, one of the most successful and most loved football clubs globally.

‘At the same time, this collaboration marks a milestone for us when it comes to merchandising potential. We expect total sales to reach £1.5bn during our partnership.’

Manchester United now most valuable club in the world after £750million kit deal

* United's £750million kit deal with Adidas moves them above Real Madrid
* Louis van Gaal's side valued at £2.1billion

Manchester United's new £750million kit deal has re-established them as the world’s most valuable sports team at a stroke, it was revealed on Tuesday, and now Louis van Gaal must engineer an equally dramatic transformation on the pitch.

The 62-year-old Dutchman will make his long-awaited arrival at United’s Carrington training complex this morning ready to meet his new staff and set about reviving the fallen giants of English football.

Van Gaal will address the players before overseeing the second of two training sessions.

It will be his only contact with the squad before they leave for a pre-season tour of America on Friday because the players have been given Wednesday off.

Van Gaal knows time is precious, with United opening their Premier League campaign at home to Swansea in exactly one month’s time.

The 2012-13 title-holders slumped to a dismal seventh place under David Moyes last season and considerable progress must be made to establish them as contenders again.

At least Van Gaal takes over a club in a much healthier financial state following the announcement that adidas will replace Nike as United’s kit supplier from next season in a deal worth at least £75m a year over the next decade.

Shares rose almost five per cent on the New York Stock Exchange as a result yesterday, with United now valued at £2.1billion — restoring them to the top of the rich list above Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona.

However, there is also a feeling of uncertainty around the club ahead of Van Gaal’s arrival, with a number of players fearing for their futures and even coaching staff unsure of their roles in the new set-up.

Phil Neville, who returned to the club as first-team coach under Moyes, is understood to be still in the dark over his position, three months after the Scot was sacked.

Manchester United will rake in £750m from the new adidas deal... so here, Sportmail looks at what went on behind the scenes as their 13-year relationship with Nike ended

* Manchester United ended 13 years with Nike to agree contract with adidas
* The 10-year deal with the German sportswear giant is worth £750million
* Ed Woodward impressed with his negotiating skills to land the deal
* United will receive 100 per cent of the profit to cover manufacturing costs

On August 1, no doubt to much fanfare, adidas will release Manchester United’s new kit.

The right to do so has cost the German sportswear giant a staggering £750million over 10 years.

For months it has been the talk of social media. Dozens of mock-ups have been released with fans across the globe whipped into a frenzy over the type of shirts Wayne Rooney and Co will wear this season.

Here, Sportsmail takes a close look at the belief-defying details of the world-record deal, reveals how bosses at Nike took less than an hour reject to United’s proposals and explains why industry insiders believe this could be executive vice chairman Ed Woodward’s finest moment of his time at Old Trafford.

]
Manchester United's new adidas shirt is released on August 1 but is this leaked kit the real one?

This weekend, thousands of seats bearing the famous Nike logo will be ripped out of Old Trafford.

They will be taken elsewhere and painstakingly repainted to ensure that come the start of the season it is the stripes of adidas rather than the swoosh which takes pride of place at the Theatre of Dreams.

Over at the club’s Megastore, behind the East Stand, the shutters will come down following a 60-per-cent-off sale on everything United.

Pre-season will be the last time fans will have the opportunity to see the Nike logo sewed onto United kits

They will remain there for a week – no doubt delighting those who hawk their unofficial wares on the forecourts surrounding the famous old stadium.

Inside, a transformation will take place. Former Nike staff, including the club’s mascot, Fred the Red, will become United employees and any trace of the US firm will be removed ahead of the grand reopening.
Adidas, still smarting from losing the lucrative NBA merchandising rights to their old rivals, will no doubt view this one as a win.

But it may come as a surprise to hear that not many at the sprawling Nike campus in Portland, Oregon, will be crying into their Budweisers over saying farewell.

Because Sportsmail can reveal that when Ed Woodward and group managing director Richard Arnold issued a list of what they would need to see to extend their existing kit deal, senior Nike officials took less than an hour to dismiss it out of hand.
One of the biggest stumbling blocks was United’s insistence that rights for non first-team and training kit merchandise would be returning to the club.

Unlike the 50/50 split currently in operation (after a set figure has been reached), they wanted to make sure that if a United fan in Hong Kong bought a United clock and bed covers, that money would be going into the club’s piggy bank.

That insistence, coupled with a world record £750m (more than twice as much as the nearest European rival) asking price, meant for Nike it was a no-brainer. First came disbelief then rejection. As one door closed, another was opened for the Germans.

All of this, of course, may not concern fans.

Adidas’s victory has been greeted euphorically by many of the United faithful. They remember the iconic kits of the 80s and will be delighted to hear that the manufacturers will be releasing a number of retro items through their originals range.

But an industry insider, with knowledge of the deal, warned that they may soon be singing from a different hymn sheet.

‘Nike believed it would be impossible to make a profit under the terms United had presented,’ they explained.

‘In the past, United fans have complained about the amount of merchandise and how much it costs but given how much adidas have paid, that will seem like the good old days once the new deal kicks in and they have to try and claw back some of the money they have already spent.

‘Everyone knows Ed (Woodward) is a fierce negotiator and this could be his finest hour.’

Whether prices for United gear will rocket remains to be seen.

One thing that is certain, is that the deal represents a staggering piece of business for the club.

Everything will change inside as well as adidas begin to add their own style to the Theatre of Dreams

Last year, United made £37.5m from merchandise.

In the first year of the new deal they will rake in £75m from adidas.

Then comes the money from the other licensed products – the coffee mug and pyjama cash.

Yes, United will now have to absorb manufacturing costs, but the 100 per cent profit will boost the coffers substantially.

In the last quarterly statement to the New York Stock Exchange, Woodward said as much.

‘On the commercial side we are excited by the numerous opportunities for further growth, including the first year of our 10-year partnership with adidas,’ he explained.

The agreement is being used in the prospectus aimed at attracting new stock market investors.

It is difficult to put a figure on how much revenue the new terms will generate but consider this – more than five million Manchester United branded items were sold last year and of those just two million were jerseys.

Add the increased merchandising revenues to the new TV deal and to the expected £50m boost from Champions League football (should they win the qualifying play-off) and it is little wonder why there is a buoyancy among senior figures at the club.

It is also little wonder why many believe very few players in world football are now out of United’s reach.

Manchester United adidas kits: Ahead of the new strip launch, we take a look at some of the best efforts from years gone by
  • Manchester United will unveil their new adidas kit on Friday
  • German company signed a £750m deal to be United's kit manufacturer
  • United were previously with adidas between 1980 and 1992
  • The club have since been with Umbro and Nike

At midnight on Friday, adidas will reveal Manchester United's kit for the new season.

Probably the most anticipated unveiling of recent times, it will be the first effort from the German giants since they penned a world record £750m deal with the club whose jerseys they made from 1980-92.

Here, Sportsmail takes a look back at that era, and picks out the 10 best previous versions of United in adidas.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

10. Away 1990-92

On here purely for posterity. I was not privy to the conversation when the designers told United what was coming but I would guess it went something like 'imagine if a load of hedgehogs rolled around in blue paint, stick a red Sharp on the front and the old three stripes on the sleeves and you've got it'. The only thing more disturbing than this Mancunian minger is that to many United fans it is a classic. Absolutely rank, as they say in these parts, and worn in a 4-0 drubbing at Anfield.

Dennis Irwin wearing Manchester United's eccentric white and blue strip in a 4-0 loss to Liverpool in 1990

9. Home 1984-86

A unique number with plenty going on including the positioning of the famous adidas badge on the sleeve. The sleeve! Its finest hour came in the 1985 FA Cup final when the 10 men of United overcame favourites Everton thanks to a curling extra-time beauty from Norman Whiteside.

Norman Whiteside celebrates the winning goal in the 1985 FA Cup final against Everton

8. European Cup Winners' Cup final 1991

If United had won the toss to play in their home colours for the clash with Barcelona in rainy Rotterdam, this sponsorless white number would not have existed. Thanks to Mark Hughes' memorable brace it is now etched into United's rich history. White shirt, white shorts and badge. A belter.

Mark Hughes celebrates Manchester United winning the 1991 European Cup Winners' Cup

7. Home 1990-92

Black piping, round white collar and three stripes, this number will bring back plenty of happy memories for Reds. Forever linked with Ryan Giggs's debut in 1990 (whatever came of him?), the use of 'MUFC' on the shorts a touch the Welsh Wizard would have been proud of.

A young Ryan Giggs in action against Tottenham in September 1991 in one of United's memorable kits

6. Home 1982-83

The thin black stripes make this one stand out, as does the use of 'Electronics' under Sharp. Other than that, everything you would expect. Nice v-neck collar with red and black trim, United looked good as they landed a third-place finish which, if you can believe it now, was an achievement at the time.

Ray Wilkins sporting the 1982 version of adidas' Manchester United home strip

5. Third 1986-88

First blue number on the list. Complete with blue shorts featuring a white devil and slanted, blended stripes, a shirt of the era. More mid-80s than Boris Becker singing along to T'Pau's China in Your Hand while playing with a Rubik's cube.

Bryan Robson takes on Arsenal's David Rocastle while wearing United's blue third strip in 1988

4. Home 1980-82

Adidas' first attempt after taking over from Admiral and few United fans would complain if they saw their heroes in this one again. An almost dagger-esque white collar was a 70s last stand and the standard three stripes on the arm made their debut.

Joe Jordan in Manchester United's first adidas kit after the switch from Admiral in 1980

3. Away 1980-81

The first adidas away kit and a thing of beauty. A simple, sponsorless white design with the three stripes going up either side of the body and down the inside of the sleeves - would not look out of place now, even if it is a bit Real Madrid.

Arthur Albiston wearing a white and black away kit that Manchester United sported in 1980

2. Third 1981-82

A new third kit from adidas in the vintage blue worn by the 1968 European Cup winners. Classic white collar and three stripes down the sleeves, white shorts and blue and black socks. Gorgeous.

Manchester United's Kevin Moran is beaten in the air by David Cross of West Ham in 1981

1. 1983 FA Cup final/Home 1983-84

Everything a football shirt should be. Simple, classy and effective. Red shirt, white v-neck, white shorts and red and black socks. The 1983 FA Cup final effort was sponsorless while the version with Sharp on the front will be fondly remembered for 1984's 3-0 Cup Winners' Cup victory over Barcelona. Screams Manchester United louder than a giddy kid in a Stretford playground.
