Preview: Manchester United v Anderlecht

A rapid return match...
That's right, Manchester United are back in continental competition on Thursday evening, just one week after travelling to Belgium for this Europa League quarter-final against Anderlecht. An away goal scored by Henrikh Mkhitaryan during the first leg in Brussels means the Reds hold the advantage in the tie, despite Leander Dendoncker's late equaliser at the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium levelling the score at 1-1. With a semi-final spot in reach, Jose Mourinho's men will be determined to finish the job on home soil.

When and where can I watch it?
The game, which kicks off at 20:05 BST, will be screened live on BT Sport 2 in the UK. Fans can also follow the action with ManUtd.com's live match blog and via the club’s Twitter account, @ManUtd, while MUTV subscribers can tune in to Match Day Live at 19:00 BST for exclusive build-up and then live radio commentary, before watching the full 90 minutes from midnight.

Be there to cheer on the Reds...
Tickets for Thursday's game are still available with all seats for Under 16s priced at just £10. See manutd.com/uel for all the essential booking information.

Any early team news?
Zlatan Ibrahimovic could make a return to the starting line-up after coming off the bench for the final eight minutes of United's 2-0 win over Chelsea. The Reds' prolific no.9 was rested after admitting to feeling tired following the first leg against Anderlecht and Mourinho reserved special praise for the Swede's replacement, Marcus Rashford, as well as Sunday's other scorer Ander Herrera and centre-back pairing Eric Bailly and Marcos Rojo. Sergio Romero could feature in goal behind them, having already made eight Europa League appearances this season. The boss said last week that injured defenders Phil Jones and Chris Smalling are likely to remain unavailable until "mid-May" while Juan Mata's return date is estimated to be even later following his recent groin surgery. Mourinho may provide another update on his squad during the pre-match press conference on Wednesday afternoon.

What's happened since the last meeting?
Well, as we mentioned above, the Reds secured a superb victory over the weekend, beating Premier League leaders and strong title favourites Chelsea at Old Trafford. Mourinho's men produced a brilliant display, arguably the team's best of the season so far, to stay in the hunt for a top-four finish. As for Anderlecht, Les Mauves took another step towards the Belgian league title with a narrow 1-0 victory at KV Oostende on Sunday, thanks to a second-half strike from captain Sofiane Hanni. Both sides, then, should be buoyant for Thursday's meeting in Manchester.

Who's the man in the middle? Spanish official Alberto Undiano Mallenco will take charge of the contest, alongside fellow countrymen Raul Cabanero and Diego Barbero Sevilla. Mallenco has refereed 16 La Liga fixtures in 2016/17, as well as two Europa League clashes, most recently Genk's all-Belgian affair against Gent in March. In his 25 matches across all competitions, he's shown an average of five yellow cards per game.

Remind me... what's the state of play in the other quarter-final ties? The other second-leg games will also be played at 20:05 BST on Thursday evening, as follows with the first-leg scores in brackets:

Besiktas (1) v Lyon (2)
Genk (2) v Celta Vigo (3)
Schalke (0) v Ajax (2)

When will the draw for the next round take place? If United go through, you'll want to know the semi-final pairings will be pulled out of UEFA's glass bowls at 12:00 BST (13:00 local time) in Switzerland this Friday, 21 April.

Have the Reds reached the semi-finals of this competition before? Yes, United progressed to the penultimate stage of the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, one of the Europa League's forerunners, in 1964/65. Having seen off Djurgardens, Borussia Dortmund and Everton in the earlier rounds, Matt Busby's men beat Strasbourg 5-0 on aggregate in the quarter-finals after finishing the English football season as league champions. Next came a fascinating semi-final tie against Hungarian outfit Ferencvaros with the Reds winning 3-2 at home and losing 1-0 in the return game, but then having to contest a play-off as the away goals rule had yet to be introduced. United were eventually defeated 2-1 but that remains the club's best run in the competition. The distinctive silverware on offer is therefore the only major honour to have eluded the Old Trafford trophy room - could that be changed this year?

Did you know? The away leg and play-off from that aforementioned 1965 semi-final against Ferencvaros are the only competitive matches that United have ever played in the calendar month of June.

ANDERLECHT DUO ASSESS UNITED'S STRENGTHS

Manchester United's opponents Anderlecht say they're acutely aware of the task that faces them in the Europa League quarter-final second leg at Old Trafford on Thursday night, after witnessing the Reds' impressive weekend win over Chelsea.

The visitors' mission is made slightly more complicated by a crucial Sunday home match of their own that lies ahead, a six-pointer in their domestic title race against reigning champions Club Brugge. But after answering some questions on the quandaries of selecting teams for two huge games in quick succession, the coach of Belgium's current league leaders, Rene Weiler, turned his attention to United's qualities.

"Well of course we have to believe and we do believe [we can win] but at the same time we have to be realistic," said Weiler, when speaking at his pre-match press conference inside Old Trafford's Europa Suite on Wednesday evening.

"We know we're playing against a very high-level team in Manchester United. You only have to look at their performance last Sunday at home to Chelsea, I think they limited Chelsea to hardly any shots on target at all. They've had only three defeats in the entire season and in the last 22 games in the league they are unbeaten. They are very strong at the back and they've got some great individuals as well.

"We saw in the first leg what they could do and we know it's going to be very hard. We know that pretty much everyone in our team will have to put in a perfect performance. But we do believe we can go through and we will be doing our utmost best to try to make that happen."

Anderlecht enter the game at Old Trafford with United ahead on away goals following last week's 1-1 draw in Brussels and Weiler acknowledged: "We need a goal tomorrow and we need to be prudent as well.

"We like to think we'll be in a position to dictate proceedings at least for part of the game and we're not going to be defending all the time. It's not just a case of sitting back.

"We're playing here against Manchester United and they're the home side so quite often in situations like this it will be they who try to dictate the game initially. I've got to plan my tactics and know the right moment to strike and not just sit back."

One of the Anderlecht defenders who faced United in the first leg, Dennis Appiah, was naturally pleased when his effective marking of Marcus Rashford was praised by a journalist. Sitting alongside his coach Weiler at the media briefing, the young centre-back responded: "I watched some of the highlights of the game and I realise it was a decent job defending against him.

"He's a player who's very, very quick, he's a young player obviously and full of energy. But it's not just him, we've got to defend against other players too. He's not the only threat coming from United."

Another threat Appiah knows only too well is Zlatan Ibrahimovic, a striker he came up against in the French league during games between their respective previous clubs Caen and Paris Saint-Germain.

Anderlecht's talented no.12 warned: "You can mark Zlatan for the whole game and he might look for 80 minutes like he's not having his best day but if you give him even half a chance, half an opportunity, a tiny bit of space, he can convert that into a goalscoring opportunity for himself or for someone else.

"Really what we have got to try to do is be aware of that, you can't leave him alone for a single second and we can't give him too much space in which to operate because he's a great player who can make the difference."

Default Re: [UEL] Manchester United vs Anderlecht

Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho puts faith in Sergio Romero for crucial Anderlecht clash: 'He is very stable and is playing very well'

* Sergio Romero started the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final in Brussels
* Jose Mourinho did not confirm whether Romero was his Europa League keeper
* Romero played in this month's 3-0 win over Sunderland in the Premier League
* United conceded a late equaliser to draw 1-1 in the first leg of the Anderlecht tie

Jose Mourinho has spoken of his faith in Sergio Romero after confirming the goalkeeper will start ahead of David De Gea in Thursday's Europa League quarter-final second leg against Anderlecht.

Romero played in the first-leg 1-1 draw in Belgium and has started in eight of Manchester United's 11 Europa League games so far this campaign.

The Argentine keeper has impressed when called upon this campaign and kept a clean sheet in his most recent Premier League outing - a 3-0 win against Sunderland earlier this month.

And while Mourinho stopped short of declaring him the goalkeeper for the competition, the manager confirmed Romero will start against Anderlecht on Thursday.

When asked whether Romero would be first choice for the rest of the Europa League campaign, Mourinho responded via United's official site: 'No he's not my goalkeeper for the Europa League. He's my goalkeeper for tomorrow.

'He was my goalkeeper in the other matches, but he's not my goalkeeper for the Europa League. I never like to do that complete separation.

'I can say the priority for Sergio is to play in the Europa League, yes, but we had some matches where David played.'

Jose Mourinho did not confirm Sergio Romero as first choice for the rest of the Europa League. Mourinho said it was 'important to have goalkeepers playing' to get 'the feeling of the match'

Romero had vast experience when he arrived at United in 2015 having been first choice for AZ Alkmaar and Sampdoria as well as amassing 87 caps for Argentina - including a World Cup Final appearance in 2014.

And Mourinho clearly trusts the 30-year-old, praising Romero for the consistency of his performances across all four competitions.

The United boss said: 'Every time he plays, he plays well. He's very stable and it's very important to have goalkeepers playing because if not, then one day you could have a problem when one goalkeeper has to play and doesn't have the feeling of the match.

'I always like to rotate my goalkeepers in different competitions but without that complete separation of 'this competition is for me, this competition is for you'.

Currently outside the Champions League places in fifth in the Premier League, United know that winning the Europa League would mean qualification for Europe's elite competition next campaign.

Mourinho was left bemoaning the profligacy of his attacking players after United missed a series of chances in the 1-1 first-leg draw in Brussels.

United took the lead in the first half through Henrikh Mkhitaryan but wasted opportunities to add to their lead and were punished as Leander Dendoncker scored a late equaliser.

Manchester United 2-1 Anderlecht AET (agg: 3-2) - PLAYER RATINGS: Luke Shaw shows Jose Mourinho what he's been missing as Marcus Rashford shines in extra-time at Old Trafford

* Marcus Rashford scored the winning goal to put United into the semi-finals
* Sportsmail runs the rule over the individual performances of the players

Manchester United successfully navigated their passage through to the semi-finals of the Europa League on Thursday night.

Marcus Rashford scored the winner in extra-time after Anderlecht had equalised through Sofiane Hanni following Henrikh Mkhitaryan's opener.

Sportsmail's CHRIS WHEELER was present to assess the individual performances of both sets of players.

MANCHESTER UNITED (4-2-3-1)

Sergio Romero 6.5 - The Argentine looked solid again on his ninth appearance in 12 Europa League games this season but had had little chance with Hanni's equaliser after Tielemans hit the bar.

Antonio Valencia: 6 - Didn't get forward nearly as much as he would like because he had enough on his plate with the tricky Acheampong.

Eric Bailly 7 - United's defensive linchpin in the absence of Smalling and Jones, and he stepped up to the plate again here after Rojo joined the list of injured centre-backs. Hardly put a foot wrong.

Marcos Rojo 6 - Hurt his left leg in an early challenge with Chipciu. Tried to continue but was carried off almost immediately in the 17th minute after nearly letting in Acheampong for a goal.

Luke Shaw 7 - This is what United have been missing from the young England left-back. Shaw’s overlapping runs down the left caused Anderlecht all sorts of problems and should have been rewarded with a goal. More solid in defence too.

Luke Shaw showed what Jose Mourinho had been missing on the left side of defence

Michael Carrick 6 - Typically steady performance from the United skipper which allowed Pogba to break forward at every opportunity, but found himself outnumbered by the excellent Tielemans and Dendoncker at times.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan 6.5 - Continued his impressive scoring record in Europe with goal No.5 but went off the boil after that. Should have scored another before half-time but was well wide of the target.

Mkhitaryan provided Manchester United with plenty of attacking threat going forward

Jesse Lingard 5.5 - A little subdued and the first United player to be replaced. Had a great curling effort turned away in the first half and couldn’t quite get on the end of Shaw’s cross in the second with the goal gaping.

Paul Pogba 6 - Played a great throughball to Rashford in the build-up to the opening goal but struggled to impose himself after that and was guilty of a glaring miss from eight yards out late in the second half. Had the ball in the net in extra-time but it was ruled out for a foul by Fellaini.

Marcus Rashford 8 - The youngster came up with another big goal for United after his excellent performance against Chelsea. His powerful running was a strong feature again but his finishing let him down until extra-time when he took over from Ibrahimovic down the middle and fired the winner.

Rashford scored the winner for United in extra-time to send United through to the last four

Zlatan Ibrahimovic 5 - Limped off after jarring his right knee in the last action of normal time. Capped a miserable night for the Swede after last week’s ponderous showing in Brussels. Twice in the second half he only had the keeper to beat and failed.

Subs: Blind 5.5 (for Rojo, 23) Fellaini 6.5 (for Lingard, 60) Martial 6 (for Ibrahimovic, 91)

Not used: de Gea, Herrera, Martial, Rooney, Young
