Manchester United youngsters Mason Greenwood and James Garner train with senior squad ahead of Champions League clash against Valencia

* Mason Greenwood and James Garner trained with the Manchester United squad
* The Red Devils have secured a place in the Champions League knockout stages
* Manager Jose Mourinho may use the game to rotate ahead of the Liverpool clash
* Greenwood and Garner have both impressed in their youth team performances

Manchester United youngsters Mason Greenwood and James Garner have trained with the senior squad on Tuesday ahead of the Champions League clash against Valencia.

The Red Devils have already secured their place in the knockout stages of the continental competition and, with a trip to Liverpool on Sunday, manager Jose Mourinho may use the game as a chance to rest some first-team stars.

That would give an opportunity to the likes of 17-year-old pair Greenwood and Garner at the Mestalla and they were seen taking part in the session at Carrington before the squad flies out to Spain.

Fellow youth team player Mason Greenwood also took part in the senior session at Carrington. United have already made it through to the knockout stages, allowing Jose Mourinho to rotate

Quote:
WHO ARE MASON GREENWOOD AND JAMES GARNER?

Greenwood is a striker who finished as top scorer in the Under-18 Premier League North in 2017/18, while still a schoolboy.

He finished last season with 17 goals from 17 starts.

Greenwood earned a call-up for the senior squad's summer tour of the United States.

Equally adept with both feet, Mason signed his first professional contract with the club in October 2018.

Garner signed his first professional deal at the club in May 2018.

He was also part of the youth team who were crowned Premier League North champions last season.

Garner does not turn 18 until March but can play both in midfield and central defence.

Garner has captained England at youth level and was part of the side that reached the European Under-17 Championship semi-finals this summer.
Garner, typically a midfielder but can be used at centre-back does not turn 18 until March while striker Greenwood top scored for the Under-18s last season and is leading the way in the goal charts again.

Both players were part of the squad on the pre-season summer tour of the United States and have represented England at youth level.

With European progression already secured, the pressure is off and United players appeared full of festive joy as they were put through their paces.

It is set to be a busy day for Mourinho and his players, with a flight to Valencia scheduled just hours after their session at Carrington, before the boss attends a media conference this evening.

Now, then, attention turns to trying to get top spot - with Juventus currently holding first place and a likely easier route to the quarter-finals.

United will have to beat Valencia at the Mestalla and hope that Cristiano Ronaldo and Juve slip up against Young Boys.

Eric Bailly returned to training on Tuesday but Anthony Martial, Luke Shaw and Chris Smalling were all absent.

Bailly played his first match for two months in last week's draw with Arsenal but then sat out Saturday's victory over Fulham, which Martial and Shaw also missed.

Smalling started that game but was replaced in the second half after suffering an injury.

Mourinho has already announced that Paul Pogba, who has been left out of the starting line-up for the last two games, and Andreas Pereira will start, and goalkeeper Sergio Romero is also set to play.

Diogo Dalot, who has shone on his first two Premier League starts, looks likely to be rested after missing training along with fellow defender Matteo Darmian, while Victor Lindelof and Alexis Sanchez are definitely sidelined through injury.

BUTT: GARNER AND GREENWOOD IS JUST THE START

Nicky Butt believes a fresh batch of Manchester United Academy graduates are ready to help the first team when needed, after Jose Mourinho named James Garner and Mason Greenwood on the bench for Wednesday's Champions League defeat to Valencia.

Our Head of Academy and Under-19s coach expressed that opinion after the fine 2-1 comeback victory over Valencia’s youngsters in the UEFA Youth League on Wednesday afternoon. The spirited win was the fifth of a group-stage campaign that yielded 16 points and 20 goals in total.

Garner and Greenwood were both set to feature in that game, before Mourinho and the first team came calling. Butt feels James and Mason have inspired the rest of his youth players to follow in their footsteps after making their first breakthrough.

“It is massive for Jimmy and Mason,” Nicky told us in Valencia. “I spoke to them before they were going. It is a great experience to be involved with Man United's first team for a Champions League game, first and foremost, but if you can get on the pitch or on the bench then it is even better!

“There are one or two in our Under-19s squad who could quite easily have been there as well. It is just unfortunate in terms of positioning, because they are more than capable of doing it. They deserve a chance pretty soon.

“But this just goes to show that the manager does give the young ones a chance and it keeps our other lads' hopes up in the changing room.”

TOP PLAYERS, BUT ALSO TOP BOYS

Juan Mata, who started the match against his former club Valencia, knows what it takes to make it in professional football and the intelligent 31-year-old is impressed by our youngsters’ attitudes so far.

“I'm really, really happy that they are here with us because they are fantastic players, but especially because they are great kids,” Mata said of Garner and Greenwood this week. “The way they behave, the way they speak, the way they train. They really deserve to be here.

“I think it speaks very well about the Manchester United Academy and the quality we have coming through. I wish them the best and really think they can be very important players for the club in the near future. But what I like most about them, apart from their footballing qualities, is the way they are - their personalities. They are very, very nice guys.”

In the end, Garner and Greenwood both watched from the bench as United were beaten 2-1 in the final Group H match.

Yet the experience of training with the seniors, travelling to Spain and observing the first-team environment will clearly benefit their education.

OTHERS ARE READY TO STEP UP

As Butt has stated, there are several players in the Academy system who are capable of making the step up.

Under-19s captain Angel Gomes has already made two senior appearances, of course, against Crystal Palace in 2016/17 and Yeovil Town in 2017/18.

Tahith Chong was recently named on the first-team bench when Juventus visited Old Trafford in the Champions League, while Aidan Barlow was pictured training with the first team ahead of the win over Young Boys late last month.

Josh Bohui, Ethan Hamilton and Ro-Shaun Williams were also part of the youthful group that joined the pre-season tour of America.

Mason Greenwood fires hat-trick for Manchester United Under-18s after being named on bench against Valencia as Michael Carrick watches kids beat Chelsea in FA Youth Cup

* Mason Greenwood hit three as Manchester United beat Chelsea in FA Youth Cup
* First team coach Michael Carrick watched Greenwood put Chelsea to sword
* Greenwood was an unused substitute for the first team against Valencia
* His goalscoring heroics provide rare bright spot for struggling Man United

Manchester United starlet Mason Greenwood continued his remarkable rise by scoring a hat-trick for the Under-18s as they beat Chelsea 4-3 in the FA Youth Cup third round.

The 17-year-old was an unused substitute for the first-team in their UEFA Champions League defeat to Valencia, having signed his first professional contract in October.

Greenwood capitalised on a keeping error to open the scoring after just seven minutes but Tarique Lamptey levelled to ensure the game was tied at half-time.

Mason Greenwood hit three goals as Manchester United beat Chelsea in FA Youth Cup

Yet Greenwood's heroics and a goal from Bernard had given the hosts a healthy 4-1 lead before Bernard was red-carded late on.

A late penalty from Faustino Anjorin and a Daishawn Redan strike ensured a nervy finish for Neil Ryan's side, but they held on to progress to the fourth round.

Last season, the Under-18s equalled the Busby Babes' record of five consecutive trophies in the competition, and will now be aiming for a sixth.

The youth team are chasing a record sixth consecutive trophy to overtake Busby Babes' record

But Greenwood's stunning display of finishing may have convinced Carrick and fellow first-team coach Kieran McKenna to hand Greenwood a chance at a higher level sooner than planned.

The striker was involved in the club's pre-season campaign, and now has 22 goals at youth level already this season.

With Jose Mourinho's men struggling in the league, already 19 points behind league leaders Liverpool, the emergence of another homegrown youngaster could providea timely morale boost.

Marcus Rashford made his first-team breakthrough in similar circumstances, providing a rare bright spark for Louis Van Gaal's struggling side in the final days of the Dutchman's reign.

LOAN PLANS FOR UNITED'S ACADEMY PROSPECTS

Manchester United's Head of Academy, Nicky Butt, expects some members of his Under-19 squad to depart on loan during the January transfer window, despite the promise of playing knockout games in the UEFA Youth League in March.

In an exclusive interview with ManUtd.com, Butt explained why the bigger picture is more important than lifting silverware for his youngsters as their development, and hopeful elevation to the senior squad, is paramount.

The draw for the last 16 of the prestigious European tournament does not take place until 22 February, once the play-off round is completed, as the Reds look to progress further than ever before in the competition on the back of winning Group H ahead of Juventus, Young Boys and Valencia.

Butt said of the forthcoming loan market, “It will affect the Under-19s [as a team]. But if you ask any Manchester United fan or Ed [Woodward] or the owners or the manager, they want players in the first team. That’s my job. That’s the job of the Academy coaches – to get players in the first team. If you can win competitions as well, that’s the best thing you can do.

”Is it good to have some players just waiting for an Under-19s game to come along? No. So we are looking to get players out on loan to develop them so they come back better players and better people for our club, with a real chance on playing on the biggest stage in the world.”

Ensuring the right environment for the United teenagers to develop is an important concern for Butt and all the Academy stuff. With the step up to Premier League and Champions League football so huge, he understands the right plan needs to be in place for each individual player.

“Basically, it’s difficult,” Butt explained. “For some of the games we have, we don’t believe they are developing the players in the right away. Of course, you’ve got to play in the leagues – Under-18s and Under-23s – and do the right things by them.

”But if you want them to play for Manchester United in front of 75,000 fans on a Champions League night against Paris Saint-Germain, as we’re going to be doing soon, then if they're currently playing week in, week out in front of 1,000 fans with the Under-23s group, it’s not going to cut it, I’m afraid.

”So we have to find ways of making our lads ready for when they’re needed in the first team. I’m not saying the Under-23s doesn’t help – of course it does. But, every week, if they haven’t experienced the next thing, it can be one dimensional and so the Under-18s can’t be one dimensional either. In the Under-23s, they need to get out on loan or we’ll produce our own international fixtures.”

There will be changes in personnel in the three teams – the Under-23s, Under-19s and Under-18s - nce the plans take hold in the new year.

“We see January as a changeover of the guard if you like,” added Butt. “A lot more players will be pushing up to the Reserves and the youth team will be made up more regularly of first-year scholars.

“They will be starting more regularly in the youth team and players will be going out on loan. But, yeah, we plan – we don’t just pick it out of the air.

“We make plans for a year, 18 months or two years for players and we believe it’s the right way to do things.

”It’s not right to keep players behind to play in the Under-19s in March to win things. It isn’t right. We’d like to win the UEFA Youth League but it’ll be more beneficial for our players to go out on loan and maybe become men and stand on their own two feet, in order to come back to the club as better players and better people.”

Good luck, Boys

CONFIRMED: OUR U19S SQUAD FOR GERMAN TOURNAMENT

Manchester United are competing in the Sparkasse & VGH Cup in Gottingen, an indoor five-a-side tournament for Under-19s.

The Reds may be aiming for a hat-trick of successes at the event and have a youthful squad taking part, with 18-year-old Alex Fojticek the eldest member of the travelling group.

James Garner and Mason Greenwood, who have been in Dubai with the first team this week, were among those taking part last year, while Angel Gomes performed in 2017 and even had some time in goal due to an injury to Ilias Moutha-Sebtaoui!

Fulham, who were defeated by the Reds in the semi-finals last year, are reportedly bringing eight members of that squad back this time so they could be experienced rivals at some point in the competition.

“We like the German tournament,” explained Head of Academy Nicky Butt to us. “It breaks things up and is a nice way of getting back into the swing of things after the Christmas and New Year break. It's about different techniques, learning receiving skills, spatial awareness, counter attacking, the keeper using his feet at the back and all these different dynamics.

”It's a nice atmosphere and an indoor setting. The players will bond as they're back together after being away and it can get a bit draining training in bad weather with the same scenario so these competitions are really good for us.“

Colin Little is set to coach the boys with two games on Friday night - against JFV Eichsfeld-Mitte and AZ Alkmaar - before matches against Eintracht Northeim, Gottingen 05, Borussia Monchengladbach and JSG Uslar/Solling on Saturday. Sunday's fixtures will depend upon our group standing.

United: Alex Fojticek; Lukasz Bejger, Oliver Denham, Reece Devine; Mark Helm, Charlie McCann, Dion McGhee, Harvey Neville, Connor Stanley; Anthony Elanga, Largie Ramazani.

'His touches and runs remind me of Robin van Persie’: Manchester United fans compare Mason Greenwood to former striker after youngster bags impressive brace for U-18 side

* Manchester United fans have compared Mason Greenwood to Robin van Persie
* Greenwood hit a brace as United's U18 side beat Stoke away last weekend
* The 17-year-old has been hugely impressive at various different age levels

Manchester United fans are understandably very excited about Mason Greenwood, and the hugely talented youngster is now being compared to Robin van Persie.

Greenwood, 17, continued his excellent campaign by scoring a brace as United's U18 side beat Stoke 4-1 away last weekend.

The skillful attacker, who usually plays up front but is also capable of operating out wide, took both of his goals excellently, and showcased his fantastic technique.

Manchester United youngster Mason Greenwood has been compared to Robin van Persie

One United fan wrote on Twitter: 'His touches and runs remind me of Robin van Persie. Bright bright future for this kid. Would love to see him first team action soon.'

Meanwhile, another praised Greenwood's strength with both feet. They wrote: 'Looks all left foot then the technique on that free kick with his right.'

Another United supporter made the comparison with the club's former player van Persie, as they wrote: 'He has those Robin Van Persie legs... Its a sign!'.

It has been an eventful season for Greenwood so far, with the England youth international having frequently flitted between different age groups for United.

He has, for instance, he has mustered 13 goals in 10 U18 league games, while he scored a hat-trick in the FA Youth Cup win over Chelsea.

Greenwood has also shone in the UEFA Youth League, hitting five goals in as many matches in that competition, and he has scored once in two games for the U23s.

The starlet was rewarded with a first-team call-up for the Champions League game away to Valencia last month, although he didn't get off the bench.

MAX TAYLOR RESPONDS SUCCESSFULLY TO CANCER TREATMENT

Manchester United’s Under-23s defender Max Taylor has responded successfully to cancer treatment after undergoing chemotherapy.

Taylor, who recently changed his name from Max Dunne, will continue to be carefully monitored despite the positive news, as everybody looks forward to seeing him wear the red shirt again.

He is still in the recovery process and is continuing to work with the club’s medical department for the foreseeable future.

”I would like to thank everyone at the club that has helped me since day one,” said Taylor. “The nurses at the Christie and HCA healthcare, plus Melissa from MacMillan Cancer Support, have all provided me with wonderful care.

”Words cannot describe how much my family has helped me through this. My mum and stepdad Matthew, my brother George, Meir and my girlfriend Lydia, and all the rest of the family, have provided invaluable support.”

Everyone at the club is thrilled with the positive update on Max and he will continue to receive our unwavering support at Manchester United

UNITED YOUNGSTERS AWAIT UEFA YOUTH LEAGUE DRAW

Manchester United's Under-19s are awaiting to discover our next opponents in the UEFA Youth League round of 16.

The Reds qualified for the knockout stages as group winners after overcoming Juventus, Young Boys and Valencia but have had to wait for the play-offs, between the runners-up and teams on the domestic champions path, before discovering our next hurdle in the competition.

Nicky Butt's youngsters reached this stage last season, after beating Brodarac in the play-off, but were beaten 2-0 by Liverpool at Tranmere Rovers' Prenton Park.

There are some interesting potential opponents in the draw, which takes place in Nyon on Friday lunchtime.

Fellow English sides Chelsea, who recorded an impressive victory over Monaco, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur are joined by Spanish contingent Atletico Madrid, Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Midtjylland, whom Marcus Rashford - a former star in this competition - scored twice against on his senior debut in the Europa League, have also made it through.

“It'll be a long wait until the next game in March,” Butt told us recently. “I'd much rather do that though, than playing a long way away in February. It's been pleasing as it's a tricky competition for us because we obviously have got the dynamic where we don't have an Under-19s team.

”We bring in the squad on a Monday and they usually can't train if they're recovering from a game from the weekend. So we're putting a team out there and trying to give them a little bit of information and the analysis work we do but it's been great to qualify early doors and come out on top of the group.

“We've done well in it and the lads that have come in from the bench have played their part. We had a young team in Valencia and did exceptionally well.”

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has drafted in youngsters Tahith Chong, Angel Gomes and James Garner to Man United squad amid injury crisis... but who are the three academy graduates?

* Man United have been hit with an injury crisis with 10 players currently out
* Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will likely include three young players for Palace trip
* Big-haired Tahith Chong made first-team debut in the FA Cup against Reading
* Academy starlet Angel Gomes has already made a handful of appearances
* The 17-year-old James Garner is yet to make his first-team debut

Manchester United head to Crystal Palace on Wednesday night with a severely depleted squad as 10 first-team players are currently out injured.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will be without attackers Jesse Lingard, Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Mason Greenwood, midfielders Juan Mata, Ander Herrera and Nemanja Matic, and defenders Matteo Darmian, Antonio Valencia and Phil Jones.

It means the Norwegian has promoted youngsters Tahith Chong, Angel Gomes and James Garner into his squad for the visit to Selhurst Park.

Sportsmail profiles the three academy graduates hoping to get an opportunity.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has drafted in Tahith Chong, Angel Gomes and James Garner to his injury-stricken Manchester United squad for Wednesday's visit to Crystal Palace

TAHITH CHONG

19, Dutch, right winger

There's no missing Chong with his enormous mass of frizzy hair and he'll be hoping to make an impression on this unexpected opportunity in the first team.

The 19-year-old, who plays on the right side of the attack, was handed his first-team debut by Solskjaer last month when he replaced Juan Mata during the FA Cup third-round tie against Reading.

Chong, who was born in Curacao but has represented Holland up to Under-21 level, was signed from the Feyenoord academy in 2016 and continues to make rapid progress.

Tahith Chong in action on his Manchester United debut against Reading in the FA Cup. Chong won the prestigious Jimmy Murphy Youth Team Player of the Year award last year

He immediately made an impact in United's Under 18s but saw his progress disrupted by a cruciate ligament injury that meant he missed much of 2017.

The 10 months on the sidelines were difficult for Chong but he returned to cement a place in United's Under-23 team and was then invited on the first team's 2018 pre-season tour of the United States.

Chong was one of the few that won praise from Jose Mourinho during what was a turbulent tour, with the then-manager saying: 'We needed people to create, have some initiative, which he did. He was enthusiastic, he was confident to play.'

By the end of the year, Chong had claimed the prestigious Jimmy Murphy Youth Team Player of the Year award and was on the fringes of the first team.

Having been named on the bench for the Champions League match against Juventus and the Premier League game at Newcastle, he finally got on the field for half an hour against Reading.

Solskjaer on Chong: 'He had two or three really good moments [against Reading], as you do when you're young.

'You don't run the game as a first performance for a 19-year-old.

'But he got the crowd going, and has shown one or two glimpses of what he can do, he has in training anyway.'

ANGEL GOMES

18, English, attacking midfielder

Gomes won the Jimmy Murphy award the year before Chong and has long been regarded as one of the current jewels in the United academy.

At the time of winning the prize, he was its youngest receipient and the 18-year-old has always seemingly been ahead of the curve.

London-born Gomes joined United's academy at the age of six and lined up for the Under-18 team at just 14.

At the start of the 2016-17 season, the playmaker with a clinical scoring touch became the third-youngest player to score a hat-trick for United's youth team aged just 15 years, 11 months and 29 days.

Angel Gomes has made a handful of first-team appearances for United so far. Gomes came off the bench during United's Boxing Day win over Huddersfield Town

Subsequently fast-tracked, Gomes made his first-team debut against Crystal Palace in May 2017 - replacing Wayne Rooney with two minutes remaining - at just 16 years and 263 days.

That made him the youngest player to turn out for United since Duncan Edwards in 1953 and also the first player born in the 21st century to represent them in the Premier League.

He has made just one appearance under Solskjaer so far - off the bench in the win over Huddersfield on Boxing Day - but that could well change in the coming weeks given United's blunted attack.

Gomes has represented England at four youth age groups and was part of the squad that won the Under-17 World Cup in 2017.

Solskjaer on Gomes: 'I'm sure Ange (Gomes), he's been in that successful team with England Under 17s, the 2000s team with (Jadon) Sancho, (Callum) Hudson-Odoi and (Phil) Foden.

'He's been a big part of it and definitely shown that if he gets a chance he'll do well.'

JAMES GARNER

17, English, defensive midfield

Garner has yet to make his first-team debut for United but was an unused sub in the matches against Valencia and Reading earlier in the campaign.

The Liverpool-born midfielder has been compared to United legend and current coach Michael Carrick because of his composed passing.

Garner was part of the Under-18 side that won the Northern Section of their Premier League in 2017-18 and he has captained the side numerous times.

He has worked his way through the ranks since the Under 8s and this season has effortlessly made the step up to Under-23 level.

Garner has also been gaining plenty of experience of continental competition with United competing in the UEFA Youth League this season.

They have been drawn away to the Danish club Midtjylland in the last 16 of the Under-19 tournament having gone the group stage unbeaten.

The teenager captained the England Under 17s at their European Championship last year and caught the eye as the Young Lions reached the semi-finals, before losing on penalties to Holland.

It seems a matter of time before Garner is handed a first-team debut and that may come at Selhurst Park on Wednesday.

Solskjaer on Garner: 'Jimmy Garner is a Michael Carrick, but 20 years younger, I'm sure he'll do well and Chongy will be taking people on if he comes on.

'They're ready, the kids, it's hard if you're a defender coming as a 16 or 17-year old but as an attacker you just go out there and express yourself, and there is your chance. They can win you the game not lose it for you.'
