Early team news for United's Chelsea test

Jose Mourinho has confirmed that he will name his strongest-possible side when Manchester United face Chelsea in the Emirates FA Cup quarter-finals on Monday evening.

The Reds will, of course, be without top goalscorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic at Stamford Bridge, as the striker begins the three-match domestic ban given to him earlier this week.

While Mourinho admits things will be difficult in Ibrahimovic's absence, the United boss is determined to face his former club "with everything we have".

"We have three days and we have to travel," Mourinho told MUTV. "We have to go to London. Its really hard. We dont have Zlatan, of course not, but we go with everything we have. We dont put a [weakened] team out like some clubs sometimes - Manchester United cannot do that.

"We know this Europa League is very important for us, and the FA Cup is beautiful. We cannot go there with a [Reserve] team, we'll try to manage it within our squad and get a good team to compete with them.

"Manchester United is Manchester United; it's the winner of this competition. It's not Chelsea's fault we were given this Monday match. We'll make changes, as we played on Thursday, but we cannot go to Chelsea with a [Reserve] team."

A positive from Thursday night's 1-1 draw with FC Rostov was the return of Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who found the net before being replaced by Anthony Martial on 67 minutes. While the midfielder represents another option for Mourinho, the boss has admitted he is not yet back to full fitness.

Meanwhile, Eric Bailly will be available for selection after serving a one-match European ban in midweek, and Mourinho could shuffle his pack once again, as the Reds continue to fight on all fronts.

"We want to keep two doors open," Jose added. "We have to keep getting points in the Premier League to keep our chances open and if we get through the knock-out round here, we're in the quarter-finals and feel the door is open, so we have to try.

"We have a trophy in our pocket, which is a good feeling for everyone. Now we have the Premier League for the fight for the top four and we have the Europa League fight for Rostov."

On the topic of his latest return to Stamford Bridge, the United manager added: "Chelsea? Its no different. Obviously before the game and after the game, Ill meet some fans and some people I like. The relation with the fans was always good but, for me, its just professional."

Preview: Chelsea v Manchester United

When and where can I watch it?
The Emirates FA Cup quarter-final at Chelsea is being shown live in the UK on BBC One at 19:45 GMT on Monday. MUTV subscribers can watch Match Day Live, featuring exclusive interviews with Jose Mourinho and his players in the build-up and radio commentary during the game. The clubs official TV channel will show the full 90 minutes at various times from midday on Tuesday. Fans can also follow the action via ManUtd.com's live match blog and the club's official Twitter account @ManUtd.

Why is this tie different? There are no longer any replays at this last-eight stage of the competition, meaning we must have a winner on the night and extra-time and penalties are therefore possible. Also for the first time, each team can make a fourth substitution in the match if an additional period of 30 minutes is played.

Could the draw have been any harder for United? Probably not. The Blues are 10 points clear at the Premier League summit and, of course, beat the Reds 4-0 at Stamford Bridge back in October. Away to Chelsea was therefore, on paper, the toughest draw available and the game comes on the back of a tiring trip to Russia for Thursday's 1-1 draw with FC Rostov in the Europa League. However, Henrikh Mkhitaryan vows the tight schedule "doesn't bother" the squad. "We just have to get ready for that game. It's not going to be easy as everyone knows but we know how we're going to play and we're hoping for a good result."

History boys... United have never retained the FA Cup despite the club's proud record in the competition. Victory at Chelsea would set up another trip to Wembley, where the Reds have won four times in less than a year. The semi-finals will be held at the national stadium on the weekend of 22 and 23 April, with the draw to decide the fixtures taking place on Monday night after the match.

What's the form guide? Both teams are in good heart - it goes without saying that Chelsea are on a fabulous run. The Londoners have gone 10 games unbeaten in all competitions since losing a capital-city derby to Tottenham in their opening outing of 2017. Antonio Conte's side have lost only once on their home patch since the Italian took charge and that came back in September against Liverpool. United, meanwhile, have only suffered two defeats since that loss to the Blues in October; both reverses were on the road and by the same 2-1 scoreline, to Fenerbahce in the Europa League and Hull City in the EFL Cup semi-final second leg.

The boss is going back to his former club again... Much of the talk around the league game earlier this season surrounded Jose Mourinho's return to Stamford Bridge and it will, no doubt, be the subject of a lot of attention again. Juan Mata is also a former Chelsea player while Paul Pogba played under Blues boss Conte at Juventus.

What's the FA Cup record between the clubs? The sides have met 13 times in the competition with United winning eight times, drawing twice and losing on three occasions. The Reds won the 1994 final 4-0 but lost to a Didier Drogba goal at Wembley 13 years later, when a certain Mr Mourinho lifted the trophy with the West London club. Dwight Yorke scored twice in a replay at Stamford Bridge, en route to the Treble in 1999, but United's last tie at the ground ended in a 1-0 reverse in 2013. That clash was also a replay, after a 2-2 draw at Old Trafford, when Wayne Rooney and Eden Hazard, who could both be involved on Monday, were among the scorers.

The Blues have had a breather, haven't they? Well, they have certainly had more time to prepare for the fixture - a full week, after making a short trip across London to beat West Ham 2-1 in the Premier League's Monday-night game. United got back from Rostov in the early hours of Friday morning and will certainly be welcoming the fact the tie was pushed back from the weekend for live TV coverage.

Who are Chelsea's men in form? The aforementioned Hazard is a tricky customer and has been back to his best this term after failing to find much spark in 2015/16. Diego Costa is top scorer, with 17 goals in the Premier League alone, while midfield dynamo N'Golo Kante has been an unqualified success since arriving from Leicester City in the summer.

Is there any team news? The big story is that Zlatan Ibrahimovic is out as he starts his three-game ban, following the FA's decision to punish him for violent conduct for an altercation with Bournemouth's Tyrone Mings. Marcus Rashford is a natural choice to replace him in the no.9 role, although positional moves for Anthony Martial and Wayne Rooney are also among the options. Eric Bailly is available after serving his European suspension, while Luke Shaw could join Rooney in returning after missing the Russia trip. Chelsea have had very few injury problems to contend with all season, so don't be surprised if they report another completely clean bill of health.

The stakes are high... United will want to set the record straight after falling way short in the last visit to Stamford Bridge. Make no mistake, this will be a tough assignment but Mourinho is sure to have his men fired up and will have a plan to upset the hosts. Chelsea will feel they can take a huge step towards the Double with victory but the Reds are unlikely to be in any mood to lose grip of the trophy.

What are the other quarter-final fixtures?

Saturday
Middlesbrough v Manchester City (12:15 GMT)
Arsenal v Lincoln City (17:30 GMT)

Sunday
Tottenham v Millwall (14:00 GMT)

Default Re: [FA] Chelsea vs Manchester United

Musim 1998/1999 memang musim yang tidak terlupakan..

YORKE AND IRWIN SEE PARALLELS WITH 1999

On 10 March 1999, Manchester United travelled to Stamford Bridge for an FA Cup quarter-final replay against Chelsea. As is the case in 2017, the Reds were considered slight underdogs going into the game, largely because of a 0-0 draw at Old Trafford that had forced the replay.

Many pundits fancied the Blues, who won the trophy two years earlier and would lift it again in the following season, to complete the job after their performance in Manchester. After all, the fixture congestion was starting to impact Alex Ferguson's team as they chased glory on three fronts.

In the middle of a European tie, following the 2-0 success over Inter Milan in the Champions League, some wondered if that would be deemed a priority over the FA Cup but United produced a scintillating counter-attacking display with a Dwight Yorke double accounting for the Londoners.

The parallels between the two games are easy to spot as goal-hero Yorke pointed out to ManUtd.com. "Absolutely, you can look at all the turning points in that Treble-winning year and say this was one of the moments," he recalled. "We know games against Chelsea are always going to be very competitive but we know United are on an unbeaten run at the moment and the confidence is high.

"Chelsea are top of the league right now and are also on a high, so the game will be close but I think United can have the slight advantage, even though I can't see too much between these two teams at the moment. It's a very important game for both clubs.

"We know if we can get past Chelsea in this round, we will have one foot in the door to the final again. I'm sure United are concentrating on finishing as high as possible in the league but will put that on hold for the moment. As defending champions, it would be amazing to win the FA Cup again."

Yorke's former team-mate Denis Irwin remembers the 1999 clash vividly, even if the baby-cradling celebration for David Beckham's first son, the now-18-year-old Brooklyn, may leave some fans feeling their age.

"We went down to Chelsea for the replay, which wouldn’t have helped us because of the amount of games we had. But we played very, very well and Yorkie popped up and scored twice.

"Chelsea were a very good side at the time – they were just coming to the fore – and we were involved with them and Arsenal in the race to win the Premier League. So it was a tough old game for us but we came through it in the end.

"It’s very much a similar scenario now because United are involved in a lot of trophy hunting again and I’m glad to say we've already got one under the belt.

"Monday's match is a tough test, we know that, as we’ve been down there once already this season and got turned over. So we’ve got a bit to prove. But it’s a quarter-final of the FA Cup and whoever plays well on the day, will win it."
