UNITED FACE WIGAN IN FIRST PRE-SEASON GAME


Manchester United will begin preparations
for the 2016/17 campaign with a game
against Championship side Wigan Athletic
later this month.

Jose Mourinho’s first game in charge of
the Reds will be the short trip to the DW
Stadium to take on the Latics on Saturday
16 July, kick-off 13:30 BST. The match will
be shown live on MUTV .

Speaking of the club's pre-season plans,
Mourinho said: "The first game against
Wigan is very important as I am going to
have some players I don’t know very well
who I am bringing into the first team. I
don’t know them well but I just trust Nicky
Butt [Head of Academy] and John
Murtough [Head of Football Development]
and the youth structure’s judgement.

"Obviously I am going to work closely with
them and I’m going to have to trust them
when they say we have a few players who,
in a couple of years, can be first-team
players. It’s important to know them and
give them the opportunity to work.
Following the game against Wigan, United
will head to China to face Borussia
Dortmund in Shanghai on Friday 22 July,
followed by the highly-anticipated clash
against Manchester City on Monday 25
July in Beijing. A trip to Sweden to take on
Turkish giants Galatasaray in Gothenburg
then follows on Saturday 30 July, before
Everton head to Old Trafford for Wayne
Rooney's testimonial game on Wednesday
3 August.

One week before the Premier League
season gets under way, United will take on
champions Leicester City in the Community
Shield at Wembley Stadium on Sunday 7
August.

Manchester United midfielder Michael Carrick believes his side's pre-season clash with rivals Manchester City will add an extra edge to preparations for the new Premier League campaign.

United will face their neighbours in China later this month, with the arrivals of Jose Mourinho and Pep Guardiola set to give 'added spice' to the meeting between the two teams.

Carrick, who has recently signed a new Old Trafford deal, reckons new United boss Mourinho and City rival Guardiola will spice up what is already one of English football's biggest rivalries.

United face City as part of the International Champions Cup in Beijing on July 25 and Carrick told the club's website: 'I'm sure there will be a little bit of added spice for a pre-season friendly.

'It'll be great for the fans out there to witness.

'The support we get out there is incredible so the atmosphere will go up a notch I'm sure.'

Mourinho and Guardiola, who have previously gone head-to-head when in charge of Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona respectively, go into their first seasons in Manchester looking to wrestle back the title from last season's surprise champions Leicester.

The battle between two of the most charismatic managers in world football is sure to intrigue over the course of the campaign ahead, with the friendly clash set to give one of the pair an early confidence boost.

'Pre-season is an important time for the team and for the players, making sure you get to that level that you need to be at for the start of the season,' Carrick said.

Before facing Manchester City, United meet Borussia Dortmund in their tour opener, with new signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan set to go up against his old side after swapping the Bundesliga for the north of England this summer.

Dortmund finished second in the Bundesliga last season and also reached the German Cup final, with Carrick believing Thomas Tuchel's side can provide a useful barometer of where United are at.

'They're a terrific team who did well in last season's Bundesliga and I'm sure it'll be a good game for us,' added the experienced former England international.

'Playing against them will allow us, to a certain extent, to judge where we're at.

'It's difficult to predict exactly what the games will be like because a lot will depend on which players are on display.

'But we know the games will be tough as we're talking about two great teams here. I'm sure they will be great games to watch.'

New United signings Mkhitaryan and Eric Bailly will be a part of Mourinho's squad to head to China, while the Portuguese boss has also added striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic ahead of the new season.

United remain keen on signing French midfielder Paul Pogba from Juventus with a potential new world record deal in the pipeline.

Setting the scene: Before flying over 5,500
miles to China for Tour 2016, presented by
Aon, the dawn of a new era at United will
begin less than 30 miles up the road in
Wigan. The composition of Jose
Mourinho’s first squad as manager is yet
to be revealed, with a number of youth
players expected to join a sprinkling of
seniors against the Latics, though the new
boss’s formation and tactical approach is
sure to be scrutinised by supporters. This
is a must-watch for all Reds.

Fixture congestion: This may sound odd
but Wigan have scheduled another friendly against Liverpool for Sunday afternoon at 16:00 BST – which is just over 24 hours after facing United! It is presumed that they will field two separate squads for the double-header.

announce the friendly with United, Latics
chairman David Sharpe looked forward to a big weekend for his club: “This will be
Jose Mourinho’s first game in charge as
manager of Manchester United and there
will be a big focus on the DW Stadium,” he

players back to the DW after the summer
break and will be great occasions.”

Opposition manager: Gary Caldwell regularly faced the Reds as a player with Wigan and Celtic, demonstrating a no-nonsense defensive style that might have prompted expectations of a similar approach to management. action during Northern Ireland’s campaign, the 25-year-old was the star of Wigan’s promotion charge of 2015/16 with 28 goals in 42 games – including 12 in his last 12 games. Impressive stuff! He also scored twice against the Reds for MK Dons back in August, 2014.

Previous meetings: Of 18 competitive
clashes, United have beaten Wigan 17
times in a run of success that includes the
2006 League Cup final, 2008’s Premier
League clincher and the 2013 Community
Shield. Though the Latics’ sole win was a
damaging 1-0 triumph in 2011/12, the 56-5
