Re: On this day in History » Manchester United
Man Utd beating Man City 5-0 at home 10 November 1994 - Manchester United 5-0 Manchester City Andrei Kanchelskis hit a superb hat-trick as Manchester United claimed local bragging rights with a comprehensive Barclays Premier League win over rivals Manchester City. The hosts scored twice in the first half and wrapped up victory after the break to climb to second in the table, two points behind leaders Newcastle United. Man Utd got off to the perfect start when Eri Cantona collected a long ball from Kanchelskis, took it in his stride with superb control and drilled it home with his left foot from just inside the penalty area. The pair combined again for the second. This time it was Cantona who was the creator as he ran at the City defence and passed to the Russia international, whose low shot deflected off a defender's leg and inside the near post. The duo continued to ran City ragged and, two minutes after the break, Kanchelskis collected Cantona's header, ran into the City area and scored at the second attempt after his initial shot had been saved by Simon Tracey. The fourth goal came in the 70th minute when Roy Keane curled in a pinpoint cross from the right wing to Mark Hughes, who got straight back up after sliding to win the ball and then calmly lifted it over the goalkeeper. Kanchelskis's hat-trick came from a counter attack from a City corner. Goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel threw the ball to Kanchelskis who freed Cantona on the right and then ran the length of the field to collect his eventual return pass, and once again scored at the second attempt. United narrowly missed out on their third consecutive Barclays Premier League title at the end of the season when Blackburn Rovers finished one point above them to secure their maiden BPL title. City ended in 17th place, four points above the relegation zone, which included four clubs as the competition became a 20-team league from the 1995/96 campaign. |

Re: On this day in History » Manchester United
15 November 2008 - Manchester United 5-0 Stoke City Danny Welbeck scored a debut Barclays Premier League goal and Cristiano Ronaldo netted his 100th goal for Manchester United as they maintained their unbeaten home record with a comprehensive victory over Stoke City. Ronaldo scored United's first and last goals and substitute Welbeck claimed the fourth in spectacular fashion to move their side up to third in the table and leave Stoke without an away win in the league. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson saw his side make a perfect start when Ronaldo struck in only the third minute. Amdy Faye brought down Carlos Tevez and Ronaldo punished Stoke with a dipping free-kick that squeezed through Thomas Sorensen's grip. Sorensen redeemed himself with saves from Ji-Sung Park and Ronaldo, who then set up United’s second on the stroke of half-time for Michael Carrick, who found the net with a low shot from just inside the penalty area. Dimitar Berbatov made it 3-0 four minutes after half-time when he volleyed home a cross from Tevez. Ronaldo and Tevez each came close to extending the lead before Danny Higginbotham cleared a Berbatov effort off the line. Welbeck, who had replaced Park in the 63rd minute for his first BPL appearance, made it 4-0 six minutes from time with a fierce shot from 25 yards. There was still time for Ronaldo to score again, placing another free-kick past the wall and into the net. Ronaldo finished the season with 18 BPL goals, making him the competition’s second top scorer behind Nicolas Anelka. His efforts helped United win their third successive title while Stoke, in their debut Barclays Premier League season, finished 12th. |
