When it comes to motivating themselves, it seems few Manchester United players will be able to out-do Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

The Armenian has taken to scoring a spectacular goal or two in his time at Old Trafford, and now seems to be competing against himself.

That's the only explanation behind the fact that in United's goal of the month competition, Mkhitaryan beat himself and himself to second and third place respectively to secure top spot.


The stunning goal was immediately pegged as a potential goal of the season contender



And the goal that was voted for as the strike of December by United fans should come as no real surprise.

It was the midfielder's stunning scorpion kick effort against Sunderland that was immediately earmarked as a potential goal of the season contender.

The strike was the clear favourite of the Old Trafford faithful, with 79 per cent of those who voted in the polls selecting the back-heeled goal.

That's not to say that certain members of the club's fanbase did not prefer his other efforts in December.

His solo strike against Zorya Luhansk, which came at the conclusion of a mazy dribble, was selected by nine per cent of voters.

While four per cent of those who cast their choice decided his goal against Spurs was the best United scored in December.

The Old Trafford side take on fierce rivals Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.

VOTE FOR JANUARY'S PLAYER OF THE MONTH



It was a tough choice picking three candidates for Manchester United's Player of the Month for January after an exhausting schedule containing matches on three fronts.

The votes were split on the contenders but three men came out on top to earn a shot at the accolade - two of them defenders. Phil Jones and Antonio Valencia have been consistent performers, while Marcus Rashford has an opportunity to emulate his triumph in September.

Fans can vote for the outcome either online or via our official Twitter account @ManUtd. The poll closes on Thursday.

Phil Jones - 5 (1) appearances
It has been a tremendous return to regular first-team action for the defender, who has earned Jose Mourinho's trust with a string of strong displays. The centre-back has provided steel at the heart of the back four but is also often unflappable and calm in possession. He recovered from a rash challenge by Sofiane Feghouli, that led to the West Ham man's red card, to perform well in the 2-0 victory in the capital and was also largely in control against Liverpool.

Marcus Rashford - 3 (2) appearances / 2 goals
The teenager can be a game-changer, as he proved at West Ham when coming off the bench to devastating effect, setting up the breakthrough goal for Juan Mata. A central striking role followed in the FA Cup tie against Reading, as he scored twice in a 4-0 win. The England international again made an impact as a substitute at Stoke City, he was fouled for the free-kick so brilliantly converted by Wayne Rooney, and was arguably the team's star man in the EFL Cup semi-final second leg at Hull City.

Antonio Valencia - 4 appearances
Despite missing the last two games, 'The Machine' as Jones calls him, has a chance to repeat his Player of the Month triumph in November. The Ecuador international continues to impress in defence and attack from full-back and intelligently teed up Zlatan Ibrahimovic's equaliser in the big game against Liverpool. Hailed by Jose Mourinho as one of the best right-backs in world football, he has been a model of consistency.

Valencia is Player of the Month for January

Antonio Valencia has been voted Manchester United’s Player of the Month for January, becoming the first Red to scoop the award more than once this season.

Despite missing the last two games of the month, the dynamic full-back topped our polls on Twitter and ManUtd.com with 57 per cent of fans' votes, finishing ahead of fellow nominees Phil Jones (22 per cent) and Marcus Rashford (21 per cent).

The Ecuador international, who also won the accolade in November, continued to demonstrate his value in both defence and attack during his four outings in January, and his contract was extended by a year midway through the month.

He was recently dubbed 'The Machine' by Phil Jones, while his consistency led Jose Mourinho to describe him as one of the best right-backs in the world.

Three of Manchester United's signings from last summer are competing for the club's latest Player of the Month award.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Paul Pogba are our nominees for February; when the same trio contested the prize in December, the Swedish striker came out on top.

Before you cast your vote on Twitter (@ManUtd), here's a summary of how each player has performed during the course of United's last seven matches:

Zlatan Ibrahimovic - 6 (1) appearances / 7 goals / 2 Man-of-the-Match awards
United's top scorer has been in scintillating form in front of goal, adding to his first hat-trick for the club in the home Europa League tie against Saint-Etienne with a key brace at Wembley in the EFL Cup final victory over Southampton. Ibrahimovic also scored at Leicester City and came off the bench to knock Blackburn Rovers out of the Emirates FA Cup, and he provided an assist for Anthony Martial in the win over Watford.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan - 5 appearances / 2 goals / 2 Man-of-the-Match awards
After some splendid performances in February, it was such a pity that injury ruled the Armenian attacker out of the EFL Cup final. Earlier in the month, he finished clinically past Leicester City goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel after a driving run and set up Marcus Rashford at Blackburn with a glorious pass, and was voted Man of the Match on both occasions. Mkhitaryan's classy first-half goal at Saint-Etienne effectively ended the Europa League tie in France and he now hopes to win his first Player-of-the-Month award since joining the Reds from Borussia Dortmund.

Paul Pogba - 6 (1) appearances / 0 goals / 1 Man-of-the-Match award
The French star performed in both deep and attacking midfield roles during February and showed his skills throughout. He helped turn the FA Cup game at Ewood Park in United's favour when appearing as a substitute and looking a class above, creating Ibrahimovic's winner with a delightful through ball. A Man-of-the-Match display followed in his homeland as he came out on top in the battle with his brother Florentin's side and he was a powerhouse again in the EFL Cup final at Wembley despite the Reds' taxing schedule.
