Wayne Rooney has been named Professional Footballers' Association Players' Player of the Year - winning the prestigious award as voted for by his peers for the first time in his career.

The 24-year-old beat fellow front-running candidates Didier Drogba, Cesc Fabregas and Carlos Tevez and was presented with the trophy at a ceremony on Sunday night.

Rooney has had an incredible season, scoring 34 goals in 42 league appearances - his best return since joining United in 2004.

The Reds no.10 started the 2009/10 campaign by scoring seven goals in eight games, and he hasn't looked back. His best spell came between the end of November and March, scoring an astonishing 25 goals in 23 games.

The PFA trophy remains in a United player's hands for a fourth consecutive year, after wins for Cristiano Ronaldo (2007 and 2008) and Ryan Giggs last season.
Young Player of the Year award, but was beaten to that title by Aston Villa's James Milner.

However, he did make the PFA's Premier League team of the year, along with fellow Reds Patrice Evra, Darren Fletcher and Antonio Valencia. The team in full is: Hart (Birmingham); Ivanovic (Chelsea), Dunne (Villa), Vermaelen (Arsenal), Evra (United), Valencia (United), Fabregas (Arsenal), Fletcher (United), Milner (Villa); Rooney (United), Drogba (Chelsea).

United striker delighted to secure another individual honour

Wayne Rooney has secured an awards double after the Manchester United striker was voted the Footballer of the Year by the Football Writers' Association.

Fresh from collecting the PFA Player of the Year accolade last weekend, Rooney has now topped a poll of journalists following an outstanding season during which he has scored 34 goals for United.

The England international finished ahead of Chelsea striker Didier Drogba and his former United team-mate Carlos Tevez - now at Manchester City - after collecting 81% of the vote.

Rooney, who is aiming to shake off a groin injury to feature again before the end of the season, expressed his delight at clinching another individual accolade.

"I am delighted to win an award with so much history and tradition and to follow a long line of wonderful players who have been honoured by the Football Writers' Association since 1948 gives me real pride," said Rooney, who will receive his award at the FWA's gala dinner at The Lancaster London Hotel on 13th May.

"I would like to take this opportunity to thank my manager at United, Sir Alex Ferguson, the coaching staff and my team-mates, without whose help and support this award would not have been possible.

"Also a big thanks to my family and friends for their constant support which is always appreciated.

"I thank the Football Writers' Association members who voted for me and I look forward to personally collecting my award at the Footballer of the Year dinner in London on May 13."

FWA chairman Steve Bates, chief football writer for The People, commented: "Wayne is a worthy winner of our prestigious award and the margin of his victory is testimony to the marvellous season he has had for club and country.

"His tally of 34 goals so far this season is certain to have captured the attention of our members, but I am sure the overall improvement in his game at Manchester United has been of equal significance.

"Wayne's enthusiasm, hunger and desire mark him out as a special player and we hope he can carry his club form onto the international stage in the World Cup this summer to help England achieve their dream.

Rooney named Barclays Player of the Month






Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has won the Barclays Player of the Month award for January.

Rooney produced a series of outstanding performances to help maintain the Red Devils' Barclays Premier League title push.

The England striker scored six goals during the month and in doing so soared to the top of the Barclays Race for the Golden Boot, becoming the first player to reach 20 goals this season.

Rooney was on the score sheet against Burnley and was again in outstanding form in last weekend's victory against Arsenal, scoring an excellent goal to put the match out of Arsenal's reach.

However, it was United's encounter against Hull City that was the highlight of the month with Rooney scoring all four goals in United's comfortable 4-0 win. Rooney has now scored 20 times in just 23 Barclays Premier League matches this season.

This is the fifth time that Wayne Rooney has won the Barclays Player of the Month award, placing him level with Steven Gerrard as the player with the highest number of individual monthly awards.

The decision was made by the Barclays Awards Panel, which includes representatives from football's governing bodies, the media and fans.

Wayne Rooney has been named Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year for 2010 after a fantastic season for United.

It's the second time he's won the award, as voted for by United fans around the world, following his original success in 2006.

He won by a landslide this year, receiving 83 per cent of the votes cast on ManUtd.com. Patrice Evra and Antonio Valencia were in second and third place respectively.

Rooney is the first Englishman to be named United's Player of the Year since Teddy Sheringham in 2001. Should he retain it in 2011, he'll become only the second man to win it three times, emulating Cristiano Ronaldo (2004, 2007 and 2008).

Wayne's club accolade completes a personal Player of the Year hat-trick for this season, after his peers in the PFA and the nation's top football journalists in the FWA also made him their top man for 2009/10.

He also won a hat-trick of club awards on Tuesday night, collecting the Players' Player of the Year accolade from Sir Alex Ferguson and also the Goal of the Season trophy for his strike on the counter-attack against Arsenal on 31 January.

"I was a bit surprised I got Goal of the Season," Wayne told MUTV. "To win both the players’ and fans’ Player of the Year is a great feeling and it’s something I’m very proud of.”
